I was in a pinch one game and decided to take a chance and use my privateer to go to Europe for trade, and beleive or not, they welcomed me with open arms.

Been doing it forever now with no problemos.

Why should this be a problem? Privateers are officially authorised by "letters of mark" from the king to harasse enemy shipping, so I see no problem with them sailing to Europe to sell their goods. Note that they still cannot carry passengers, however.

Of course occasionally privateers got hung as pirates by the authorizing government (the grossly unlucky Captain Kidd, for example). Gray areas...and profitability.

Do you mean during the pre-revolutionary part of the game or after revolution? If it is pre-revolutionary, that isn't a revelation. You could do that in original Col, and I was doing it in this one rather than lugging cargoes back home.

If, OTOH, you mean during revolution and with representative government selected (rather than monarchy, in which trade with Europe is allowed), then that is a biggie.

I think its kinda funny not only can you trade with Europe, you can sell a rival back their own goods you just pirated from them with the Privateer. XD
