FriskyBuddha Jan 14, 2009, 07:13 PM Hey all,
Thought it would be interesting to find out what computer specs you serious civers use. I've upgraded a couple times and still on large maps each turn takes a couple minutes and i get memory errors when i get to the later game.
I've got a
- GeForce 9600 GT
- AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.81 GHz
- 2 Gig DDR2 RAM
rabber Jan 15, 2009, 05:09 PM I have a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB RAM, Radeon X1600 graphics chip with 256 MB. I can run 2.51 without MegaPack fine; cannot run with MegaPack - crashes every few turns. Oh, I am running 32-bit Win XP Pro SP3. All of this is on a 17" notebook computer.
Stormwind Jan 15, 2009, 05:30 PM Athlon XP 3000+ 2,16Ghz
1,5GB DDR RAM
Nvidia 7600GT
No Problems with 2.51 Megacivpack except long turn times in mid/late game on maps bigger than large.
JosEPh_II Jan 15, 2009, 07:12 PM Intel PIV 2.4 ghz single
ATI X1650 Pro with 512 ram
1.5 gig DDR 400mhz ram
Win XP Pro SP3
Was experiencing MAFs, tried the /3GB switch. Didn't MAF but scrolling would get choppy and slow even saving frequently. So I deleted the /3GB switch. But I then went to My Computer/Properties/Advanced Tab/Performance clicked settings button and set Performance Options selected Visual Effects tab and selected Custom. Under Custom only 4 boxes are checked: Show shadows under menus, Show window contents while dragging, Smooth edges of screenfonts, and use visual styles on windows and buttons.
Under Advanced tab; set Processor Scheduling and memory usage to Programs. Vitual Memory is set at 2559 Mb (remember I only have 1.5 gb of ram).
Played several hours last night with no MAFs, no choppiness, or freezing. Game is now mid 1800's. Tanks are rolling off the assembly lines.

2GB RAM, some cheap and pathetic graphic card.
No megapack, game runs fine (with about 2 minutes of waiting between turns in future era on large maps). Never pushed my hardware far enough to see errors; toning down the graphics and give the game "real time" priorty really helps. Oh, if you got Vista, plug in a spare USB drive and mark it for "Readyboost", your computer will basically dump all the memory it is holding unto that and let most of your real memory hold Civ4 stuff. This is a good way to bypass memory failures.
PS
JosEPh II, your computer is really an old piece of junk. Wanna buy a new one? I found a nice deal on Dells; $500 ish can get you a very VERY decent computer; you can get a TOP of the line, state of the art, Intel i7 comp for less than 1K. Borrowing a line from some random company that I don't remember (unless it is Comcast), "It's time to upgrade"

My compy is custom built and yes it's time for a new MoBo, Chip, and Ram. But working for Comcast I can't really afford one.
Would like an Asus MoBo for the wolfshead(?) chipset, and 3Gb of DDR2 or 3 Ram. But that means new case and PS too. So.......I continue with a 5 yr old chipset and a 2 yr old MoBo (Asus P4P 800 SE) and 400mhz ddr ram. Sigh. :/

hgthechinese Jan 16, 2009, 10:18 PM LMAO. you work for Comcast? So you can tell me if the "it's time to upgrade" line is for Comcast or not. I doubt it, since I'm pretty sure "it's comcastic" is the line for comcast.
micro center has great parts cheaply if you wish to build it yourself; Dell does allow you to custimize just about everything though.

They do, at a price. I consider a Dell a year ago but decided to go with an Acer and replace the videocard myself. No regrets! Even bought 2GB of memory a few months later.
