First, a bit of an introduction. Civ4 Complete is the first Civ game I have owned. Coming from a background of Console FPS (Call of Duty 4) and PC RTS (C&C, AOE) gaming i am keen to get into this. I have played the tutorial in the game and have started a lot of games but as of yet am yet to finish one. I hope with the advice of other players (and hopefully some other newbies chipping in and learning along) to play this one to a victory and to learn along the way.

I have started a Continents, Temperate, Medium Sea, Standard Size, Normal Speed, Noble with Random Civ. Starting Location below, pretty happy with location. :food: & :commerce: has damn good potential, :hammers: are a bit lacking (I think).

So things to discuss. Build Queue & Research Queue.

I am thinking: -

BQ - Warrior - Worker - Work Boat - Warrior - Settler

Start with a warrior to allow the city to grow first, then a couple of units to improve BFC before thinking about expanding further. Ideally a source of Copper will have shown before settler is used.

RQ - Agriculture - Wheel - Fishing - Bronze Working - Animal Husbandry

With me not starting with Mysticism I'm not going for an early religion, especially given my scope for tile improvement. Using Slavery to whip out early units given my high food yield and chopping to help along if required.

Save attached, feel free to shadow, but no spoilers please.

I await your advice. :) :goodjob:

4 food resources is pretty sweet. Who are you playing as? Catherine, Peter, or Stalin? I'll try to play along when I have the time.

I'm going to shadow this until 1000 B.C. Let me boot up Civ.

As the first initial ScreenShot, there's several hills, so it won't lack hammers for a while.

To 25 AD

4000 - already settled so in place. Warrior 1st is bad. Switching to worker. Techs = AG ----> AH

3760 floods and corn/pig down SE. Very powerful, but probably 2 cities, not one.

3520 land to north and even east is tundra. Some silver (and we have marble and stone somewhat nearby) but not much else that direction so far.

3360 after AH go BW ----> make a 2nd worker instantly. No AIs met yet and we can get bronze pretty quick for some chops.

3280 Hatsheput.

3080 She's close, it was chance we didn't meet.

2960 Sal.

2440 went mysticism after BW. 5 turns left on writing. Chopped a settler, heading toward horse/gold/corn/pig.

2240 Settled st pete as planned. Worker starts on horse instantly.

1600 HBR tech completed (running scientists in moscow)

1560 great scientist settled in moscow

1520 archery done, going pottery/fishing then slider off

1440 Novgorod settled to get more FP

1320 Changed my mind about tech. Heading to monarchy while building HA.

850 Revolt to HR

500 Declare on hatty with 11 horse archers (I whipped St pete like hell)

475 Capture Thebes

425 Heliopolis is auto razzed :(

375 Memphis captured, egypt destroyed

250 CoL in. I hold off on caste for now because I want to whip courthouses and protect the seafood I haven't improved in my capitol yet.

200 13 HAs declare on sal

175 Capture medina

125 BC Capture Mecca

25 AD Capture Damascus, Arabians eliminated

Played up to 350 B.C. I waited till Hatty built a Jewish Shrine before taking her cities, then took her cities with 4 Horse Archers vs. 1 spear and 2 archers. One died on first spear, the other three won at 27% odds on both archers.

My session included popping three techs from huts and losing Confucianism by 2 turns. Nevertheless, this was a good session. My save is posted, and I will continue it another day.

And some pointers:

1. Warrior first is not that great. I typically go Work Boat or Worker first as you need to jumpstart your economy right from turn 1.

2. In my save, Moscow was a GP farm, 2nd city is cottage farm, and 3rd city is production. I captured both of Hatty's cities and Thebes will become a commerce city with a shrine and a few cottage-able squares. Not to mention villages on plains she built.

1800 AD Domination

100 AD Academy in capitol. Revolt to hindu.

250 AD CS finished, revolt to bureaucracy

520 Miss out on late GLH .

620 TGL in moscow, now going to finish philo in 3 turns, build national epic there, and spread hindu there. Uh oh.

680 pacifism/caste

720 Hindu shrine in mecca. 121 GPP in moscow.

780 paper

840 education

880 alpha

960 Calendar

980 IW

1010 compass, lib bulbed to 1 turn from completion

1030 nationalism from lib

1050 machinery, bulb most of PP

1060 PP

1090 optics

1110 feudalism

1150 Guilds

1180 banking

1210 Astro bulbed

1220 Oxford in moscow

1230 economics, free merchant, u sankore

1270 one merchant bulbs constitution, revolt to FM/rep

1310 bulb and finish corp (and a lot of back techs)

1400 Sci meth

1500 I FINALLY meet another AI, and only after I put in some cursory effort.

1555 I have to admit, I stopped trying somewhere around taking mecca. I now have sushi...but everything's been on auto forever.

1630 I hit assembly line. Nobody else...has gunpowder. Insult to injury: slider is going off to finance the upgrade of 17 CR II maces to infantry ;).

1690 declare on monty, just before he gets gunpowder, with 22 infantry, 16 of them CR (couldn't afford the last one :p).

1695 Tenochtitlan falls. The idea here is to cap him, then all others.

1705 Aztec capitulate. I gift his cities back and start to move on.

1735 declare on silly man

1740 I take a city, he capitulates after losing his entire stack there.

1770 declare on willem. Still going vs longbows.

1790 dutch cap, i declare on alex and wipe out his sod (he was also fighting willem)

1795 Alex capitulates.

1800 I officially get a domination win, although I've also cleared the requirements for conquest.

I achieved the requirements for a conquest victory.
Don't you need to eliminate ALL civs for a conquest victory?

The remaining civs that are vassals are not rivals.

@ dirtyparrot: I am playing as Peter (I think  (Civ is not on this PC, only on the laptop which is at home). It would be great to have your input. I want all the advice and assistance I can get.

@ Smartbluma: Thanks for the pointers I will switch my build to either a worker or work boat, and adjust my research path accordingly tonight. Is it not necessary to defend your city from as early a point as possible? I know that we are a fair few turns from Barb Warriors being around so they aren't a problem, but do I not need to worry about another Civ doing an early rush on me? Would you then build a Warrior second to defend the city or is early defense not a problem at this level?

I will check your save out when I get up to that time period. Will be good to compare how my cities are looking to someone's who know what they are doing.

Does the Tech path and build queue sound O.K. if I switch to a Workboat/Worker first?

How about Workboat - Worker - Warrior - Warrior - Settler? Would this work better? This allows me to kick start the economy and allow the city to grow at the same time.

Adjust Tech Path to Fishing - Wheel - Agriculture - Bronze Working - Animal Husbandry?

@TMiT: I'd be very happy with an 1800AD Domination Victory. Well played.

Will play the first few turns tonight, see what that brings.

Thanks for the input, all input greatfully received.

Oooops!!!

I'll have to build the Worker first as i can't build a Work boat until Fishing is researched.

Barbarians don't enter your borders until there are 2x cities on the continent, where x is the number of civilizations on the continent. That means they start entering your borders when everyone settles their second cities. Building a worker first will give you enough time to boost your economy before the "horde" comes in. Or you could just build the Great Wall...

Workboat-Worker-Warrior-Warrior is pretty ideal for your situation, but maybe squeeze another workboat in between the warriors. Everything is situational.

My path was Fishing-Wheel-Pottery-Writing-Alphabet-Trade Techs. For some reason I always beeline Alphabet to trade techs

I dunno man. You plan on researching Agriculture and the Wheel (2 most expensive worker techs) before going Fishing and have your build queue Warrior/Worker/Fishboat? You'd be better off Warrior/Worker/Worker/Fishboat. You'll actually have Fishing tech when you plan on building the workboat and you'll have 2 workers to utilize ur expensive Worker techs.

SteelCityBlade,

I'm so willing to check your save and see if I can fix some things up. My mother banned me from the computer (And CivFanatics too!) for a while so when I sneak on I will play it over. ;)

These bans aren't to be taken seriously, they are there only to test your spirit. :);)

I'll take a look at your save when I get home.

@ Your save:

I noticed several things.

1. Try not to build cottages when they aren't next to a river. The river gives you 2 commerce instantly when you build it. 3 commerce if you are financial. Also the flood plains west of your second city would have made a better cottage spot.

2. You settled a GP in Moscow but you didn't build a shrine in the holy city. Over time the shrine would generate more GPP than one settled GP.

3. Expand more. You've only got two cities. Either find better places to settle on the continent or put Saladin's head through a pole and take his.

I look forward to your next save and giving advice.
