Also none of the pics of the people or the custom research icons show up...

However if I start a scenario, I get some pics, but he main display is still MIA on the textures...

You should download the art pack, that'll probably fix it.
Otherwise, you should check if the Final Frontier mod works. If that mod doesn't work work either, perhaps your computer's video card can't hgandle the space textures. (I have no idea if that's possible, but it might be)

I have the three little zips...The Final Frontier mod works fine, just take an eon to run a turn, where as even with this missing textures, this mod runs much faster...
