View Full Version : Any Flag Makers Out There?

Just wondering if there are any designers of flags or crests that might be interested in making one for our nation. We'd have to determine which tribe we're going to play as first, but once that's done, it would be nice to have a flag for our Capital City.

Anyone out there good at this? We've had some great flags/crests in previous games.

I'm not sure if I am able to have my creation make the cut :-/.

I might be able to design one, but not make one.

I will have a go once we know what kind of nation we are going to be.
(No promises on quality though)

Very cool. That's three samples to choose from already.

Anyone else. There's still lot's of time.

I have one hand-practiced crest that I could probably do in paint, all though it is very straightforward. It might not work for whichever civ gets voted in though.

Not bad at all, billybones 27. Are you going to add to it?

Bowsling
Mar 01, 2009, 01:24 PM
yeah maybe, that's just a rough draft I put together in 5 minutes based on my own crest. the background will be our team color, perhaps somebody with more time and computer drawing skills than me could make a final draft, if mine gets chosen, with some stars in the margins. perhaps red for the crest itself if we to get the bright green, so you can actually see it without clicking on the thumbnail.

A more contrasting color would help a lot.

Bowsling
Mar 01, 2009, 04:45 PM
yes. we are the celts, so if we get dark green, te crest can stay yellow. if we get light green, like I have now, red can be our crest.

Still looking for CivGeneral's, mickyd47's, and montizzle's offering. We've got a little time, but a rough draft would be appreciated.

a rough draft of a banner of arms. I am an amateur herald, so I tried to take the rules into account, as well as give it a celtic feel.

Saving in JPeg kind of blurred things a bit, but you get the general idea.

I like the heraldic dragon. Could you put him on a flag with a fitting background colour, montizzle?

montizzle
Mar 02, 2009, 06:34 PM
Argent (silver, or more frequently white) is the intended background color, but I am open to suggestions. I could reverse the colors or add stripes or additional charges. I kind of wanted to start simple, then add to the design as our tribe accomplished things. For instance, if we became a major naval power, I could add waves to the base, or if we were conquering heroes, a shield and spears at the dragon's feet. There are a great number of things that could be done with this design. However, if it is decided that something more is wanted, I will certainly add to it now.

By the way, I like the constellation flags my compatriots have submitted.

I like the dragon, though I think it needs a bit of contrast to make the head stand out more. I kind of dig dragons, and that's a really cool one. Much more original than mine, I was just refining billybones' flag. I like both ideas, maybe one could be our battle flag and the other could be our "state seal" or our official flag. I know the United States had the "Don't tread on me" flag with a coiled rattlesnake during our revolutionary war as a battle flag, so countries having multiple flags is very appropriate. I like a flag that changes as the country does, sort like how the American flag changed, adding more stars for more states. Whatever is decided, I'm glad I could be a part of it.

I like the dragon and the idea of adding to the flag as we achieve things in the game. The stars would make a good seal.

Alright, here is a demonstration of the evolving arms concept. Lets say we just won a long, bloody war with our nemesis, the English.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3613/3331341361_d297001a40.jpg?v=0
We could show our dragon, scarred but triumphant, trampling their shield.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3582/3331341389_3e7d6c1056.jpg?v=0
Or let's say we dominate the world's oceans.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3408/3332177390_6e3dbf168e.jpg?v=0
then we use that naval prowess to strike at our enemies from the sea.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3380/3331411115_6da06aa8af.jpg?v=0
And then an important alliance with the Arabs.

We don't have to follow this path, it's just to give you an idea of how flexible the design is. After all, 6050 years is a long time to have one flag. Many nations have flags that have evolved over time.

Cyc

Is your work all freehand, montizzle? If so, you're really good.

montizzle
Mar 07, 2009, 06:40 PM
It is freehand, and thank you. I try. Will a poll be used to determine our first flag? I was thinking, do we want to select a flag, then on a monthly basis ratify the design and/or changes? Or perhaps have the designer (as all have proven to have an eye for it) act as state herald, proposing changes or executing them as the will of the people deems necessary? This could be done, but it is not provided for in the constitution.

Cyc
Mar 07, 2009, 07:17 PM
In the past, we have asked the flag makers to put together their main entries, or in the case of our evolving flag scheme, a brief synopsis of your plans. This would all be done in this thread and when you all are satisfied with your entry, we put them in a poll for the citizens to vote on. None of my entries ever won, darn it. But we have had some really killer flags. Um, same goes with banners and crests and official seals. We take all comers. If your flag doesn't win in the flag poll, maybe some quick redisgn will make it a winner in the War Flag, or the dynasty banner, or the crest poll. Plenty of options here.

Ya know, I was just thinking. We might need a Minister of Propaganda to handle all of this. Hmm.

Thanks :) They're part freehand but elements (the tree & spears for the shield for example) are pre-constructed images. I used photoshop (what else?) to put them together & add shadows & a bit of fake depth.

I have to admit that I followed your lead w/ the dragons & the idea of the shield in the first place but I didn't really have any particular progression in mind, just presenting alternative designs.

I can fiddle around w/ them and change elements if people like them but I didn't mean to step on your toes montizzle - you were here first.

Ok, people let's move closer to picking our nation's flag. We've been getting a lot of compliments, but not much direction from the designers. So, I've decide to put up a poll, YES I'm going to call it a flag poll. I just want to run these ideas up and see if you salute. ;)

There will be four main groupings of flags. Each flag will have a title under it. This is how you will identify the flag. These pics will not be in the poll, only the flag titles. You will need to decide which flag you want to vote for from the pics below. This will take two posts, so be aware of that (didn't want all this going in one post). Post any comments or concerns below. We need to get this ball rollin'. BTW, Longus3 and Longus4 lost some color in the processing. Sorry. The originals are in this thread.

Cool  Photoshop is pretty much my tool of choice for this sort of thing, I made the images quite quickly though & produced the wave & shadow effects rather crudely. I'd re-work them if any of the images were actually chosen/used.

Ok, I had them saved to a different post so the thumbnails wouldn't show up at the bottom of the page. Looks dumb. If I wanted to post thumbnails at the bottom of the page, I would. Anyway, the saving in a different post will work, but I guess it has to be in the same sub-forum or the same thread. Didn't test this.

- Easily doable.

Voters might also want to remember that waves & shadow can be added to any flag that doesn't already have them, if desired.

Maybe I'll wait until the poll closes & then tweak w/ the winner.

The National Flag poll has closed and he decision was made NOT to have a runoff. Therefore the winner of the poll "Longus9" is the Hibernian National Flag!

I would like to submit the following flag for war flag:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3437/3350119391_fab77555f1.jpg?v=0
This is a battle standard in the Medieval tradition. A short explanation is in order. The background colors are the livery colors of our national flag. The dragon (a new one, more late middle ages -ish) our national symbol, is given in green, the traditional color of the Celts. Standards like this were used to show badges, a symbol associated with, but not necessarily part of, one's coat of arms. Badges were worn by the retainers of lords to show allegiance. The Tree of Life, as used on the national flag, fulfills this role nicely. They were also used to display mottoes, though ordinarily words should not be anywhere near flags or coats of arms. I arbitrarily chose "Hibernia Go Bragh" as our motto, but that is subject to change. I am personally pleased with this design, as I think it shows a strong relationship with the national flag, while still symbolizing "don't mess with us, we mean business."

An unrelated flag that didn't fit into the national flag contest:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3567/3350934000_cb5a5daa12.jpg?v=0
This was meant to be an alternate flag for if/when we transition to communism.

Yes, a great war flag. A great design. Love the colors, the layout, the motto, and the new dragon. Bravo. I can see these carried by the Horsemen (once we learn how to ride Horses).

Can you tell us about the other flag?

montizzle
Mar 13, 2009, 12:24 AM
Well, the second flag was inspired by the flag of the Soviet Union. I made it on the suggestion of Zearo shortly after he requested it, but didn't introduce it because I wanted to keep some tricks up my sleeve. We could call it the flag of the Hibernian Socialist movement. The dragon symbolizes the Celts and their heritage. The dragon forms a sickle, representing the proletariat. Its a dirty communist symbol, through and through.
