I bought Civ1 DOS at Ebay last week. It arrived today, and came with manual, MOUSE PAD with Sid's autograph, and floppies. I got it for around $8.

Now my question is two fold:

It came with 4 (not3) 3 1/2 floppies. What is the 4th one for?

And it has been so long since I installed anything DOS on my computer I am afraid I may do something wrong.

It says it will install it to folder MP/Civ. I already have Civ1 for Windows in that folder. Will it overwrite it or what? What do I do?

I have always wanted to see the original DOS version and I hope I can get it to work on my computer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You must be able to select another folder to write it to.
If you want to be sure just choose that option!

I got the game installed from those 4 floppies.

This game really looks different from the WinCiv version.

Maybe I have done something wrong, but the whole thing looks huge and "grainy." (I selected VGA. Right? or Wrong? I have a Dell Pentium 3, 700mgz.)

And the music is strange. I selected IMB once and Soundblaster or equivalent once. One produced no sound. The other sound. (Can't remember which did which but I have a Turtle Beach Sound Card.) The music is slow and wierd.

And I did not hear much sounds from battles or anything.

So far I like my Windows version better. Certainly CivNet is better for graphics and music.

But I saw what some of you were talking about. There were waves on the beaches. And Abraham Lincoln and his cohorts did indeed scowl. But I did not hear many sounds of battle.

What should I have this set on for graphics and music?

I realize I have a collectors item here and am indeed grateful. I hear the first Civ1 came out on 4 floppy disks like what I have.

Was there an option for SVGA? (doesn't know is SVGA was common yet back when Civ was first released.) If so, then SVGA should give better results. If not, then I don't know, what are the options? =] (I don't have Civ1 DOS, so I don't know..)

I also don't about the music in Civ DOS, but in the SNES version there is okay background music (which changes at the beginning of each age) and then I think there is one sound effect which an get annoying really quickly. (And there is an option to turn off the music which is okay, but not option to turn off the sound effect =P) So I always just turn the volume al of the way down when playing the SNES version. =P

The graphic options are:

vga - 256 color
mcca- 256 color
ega 16 color
tandy 1000 16 color

And the Sound options are:

no sound
ibm sound
tandy sound
Ad Lib/Sound Blaster
Roland Mt-32MIDI
Custom sound driver

This is a very different looking and sounding civ!

I do like the scowling Abraham Lincoln. And the little militia is quite different from WinCiv's. He is just a little man, almost like a toy soldier.

Anyone else have this version? What sound and graphic options do you choose?

For graphics, I hit #1.
As for sound, either #1 (no sounds) or #2 (IBM sounds).
There is no background music, but there are anthems and some sounds.
This works on my machine with win98, hopefully it works on yours.
If the sound is a problem, just play without it.

I do hit 1 for vga.

But #2 ibm sound is silent. So I hit 4. Soundblaster ever though I have a Turtle Beach sound card.

I'm getting used to the music. Slow, isn't it? And kind of choppy?

And I'm using my Civilization mouse pad with Sid's signature on it. :)

I got my Civ mousepad from a sale on Ebay. They were selling that along with the Civ1 DOS game (4 floppies) and manual. I got the whole thing for around $8.

I hate to even talk about the mousepad, because I know so many people would like to have it. I don't know where you might try to find it.

Mine has Sid's autograph on it which makes it special.

Check on Ebay.com from time to time.

Just so you will know. It does not have a screen shot of Civ1 on it like I had hoped. :( It just says Civilization etc. Micropose. And then scribbled below is Sid's autograph. I was hoping it would have a picture of the city display or something.

So don't feel too bad if you don't get it. It's nice. But no picture on it.

$8 isn't really a bargain for Civ but the mousepad makes it worth the money! :)

I have this 4 floppy (720K!) version and played it on EGA as well.

The game runs very slow on my machine unless the IBM sound option is used. In that case it is perfect. And it produces some speaker sound, a nice tune is available in the intro screen (the one about the earth being formed).

I am choosing option #4 for sound, Soundblaster, though my sound card is a Turtle Beach. I do get music. But the game is slow.

If I just set the option to #1 on the IBM option, I get no music and no sound.

Is this something I will have to set by changing something inside my computer? I have a Dell and Harmon Karden speakers with sub woolfer.

I know nothing about the internal speakers or how to set them or if I'll mess up something in my computer if I try.

Advice?
