View Full Version : Which Enterprise to Use?
deanej Feb 16, 2009, 03:36 PM EDIT: Since people coming to this thead think the question is still unsettled, I'm adding this not that the decision to stick with the origional Enterprise was made long, long ago.
EDIT2: The origional post has been moved in to the spoiler below, as people still think this is open (this is the LAST time I create a poll like this without using the expiration date feature...).
The USS Enterprise from the next Star Trek movie was just added at Bridge Commander Files. I believe I now know enough to convert it to civ and even animate it. The question is, should I replace the current Constitution model with this one?
JEELEN Feb 16, 2009, 10:38 PM Can't you use the appropriate model as per time period?
deanej Feb 16, 2009, 10:44 PM I believe that it is essentially the same time period, given that the new movie is a reimaging. For the purposes of the mod it would definitely be the same time period as I don't presently have any future scenarios planned for that time period.
Officially the new movie is an alternate timeline.
Imrahiel Feb 16, 2009, 11:36 PM I would wait until the Movie is out, because we do not really know what happens at the end , it could ( i do not think so) be that the original timline is correct.
The most interressting fact about this what is with Q would he accept the timeline change?
I hope they do not forget that he and the other Qs know everything about the "right" timeline and he could correct it.
apenpaap Feb 17, 2009, 04:22 AM I agree with Imrahiel: use the TOS Enterprise at least until the movie's out.
Orion Shadow Feb 17, 2009, 09:37 AM Would it be possible to get a side by side picture of what both versions look like?
apenpaap Feb 17, 2009, 11:34 AM original:

deanej Feb 21, 2009, 12:57 PM OK, I've cast a tie-breaker vote for "keep as is" (at least until later, I may post this question again for 3.0). I may add it in to the art defines for modders that may want to use it.
Ionopachys Feb 26, 2009, 02:00 PM Apenpaap, that is not the new model, but a fan made version. The new Enterprise can be seen here (http://img.trekmovie.com/images/st09/st09_hr_ncc1701.jpg).
Keep the classic Constitution. The new version is ugly.
Majicman182 Mar 30, 2009, 08:51 PM the new one looks like the Enterprise C class
Imrahiel Mar 31, 2009, 07:32 AM but i think Enterprise-C/ Ambassador class looks better
PPQ_Purple Mar 31, 2009, 05:14 PM I am not much of a trekie, but I can't see any real diference betwen these 2 models.

I found picture which better compares them:

phungus420 Mar 31, 2009, 06:41 PM That original you are using is a refit.
PPQ_Purple Apr 01, 2009, 09:55 AM One realy could not tell on those other two images as they were both taken from bad angles.
Seeing them side by side, the one above is a little better. It just looks bulkier. The one below looks like it's been on a diet and it went horribly wrong.
Dave_Oz Apr 10, 2009, 11:04 AM Use the new model, im sure they would of made the Enterprise from the series look like this, if they had the technology.

I doubt it, as all the proportions are wrong. Though they might indeed have used the shape of the nacelles and stuff.
Ajidica Apr 14, 2009, 07:02 PM I'm not a trekkie (but I have seen TOS and pieceing my way through TNG, its the only sci-fi show I get thats not the Stargate junk[apologies to Stargate fans]) but I say keep the old Enterprise the one we all know and remember. (Especialy from the TOS title sequences when they couldn't decide should the back of the enterprise engines have a missle tube layout or a fully open layout.)
Imrahiel Apr 15, 2009, 01:21 AM I think it is not a question anymore which one to, because we know that the film officialy
play in another univers. That means in a main mod with models from TNG,DS9 and VOY
we can't use the new model, because it is from another timeline/universe. We just can use it in a special scenarion.
Dave_Oz Apr 17, 2009, 07:35 AM Although its not completley related, they changed the look of the Klingons once they had the budget for it in the first Star Trek movie, and that's now canon.

I hope your lying and that isnt a massive spoiler you've just thrown out there of the films plot.

I do not lie and when in my opinion it is clear that after that what happens in the film
TNG,DS9 and VOY couldn't happen,If the Film plays in the old univers not i a new. For example in the first episod of TNG Q nearly decids
to sentence the Humans becaus they are to agressiv. What would happen if the human are now more agressiv/build more military ships( that what is said in the Plot)?
The second thing is
:bump:Attenion this is a Spoiler about the new Star Trek Film
What happens when Vulcan is destroyed in the movie, like it is to see in the Trailer?
And just 10.000 Vulcans survive?
What is with all the important Vulcans how we see later in DS9 and VOY?
What is with Tuvok and the Captain of the Saratoga ?
Gets the Voyager destroyed or is Sisko killed in WOLF 359,, because he commands the
Saratoga?
Aditionaly: Is the Federation strong engouh to Survive without it's second most important planet.
So if the Film happens in the old univers it would change dramaticly and it unable to use the old model from TNG, DS9 and VOY.
Dave_Oz Apr 19, 2009, 12:18 AM I bet its a dream or vision.
Aurore May 31, 2009, 08:37 PM It's not in another universe. It's a deliberate and permanent change in the timeline. They want a clean slate. Star Trek TOS didnt fit into the rest of the series, partly because it never really had an ongoing plot and the setting wasnt well defined. This change means that indeed DS9, TNG, voyager, never happened. Star Trek is restarting. Only the old Spock remembers what time would have been like. Enterprise is the only one of the series that actually has happened.

TPTB have stated on multiple ocasions that it is an alternate reality. When Spock and Nero traveled through time, they created it. All of the series happened, but only Enterprise and Trek XI happened in THIS timeline.
Arakhor Jun 01, 2009, 05:23 AM The most reviled series is the only one that they keep, not the classic series or the 21 seasons of much better TV than Enterprise? I feel insulted.
apenpaap Jun 01, 2009, 05:53 AM Try rewatching it. It's actually very good.
And the other series still happened, just not in the univrse where trek XI and XII are set.
Arakhor Jun 01, 2009, 06:17 AM Oh, I do like certain parts of Enterprise, just not in preference to the other 24 series of TV and ten films! Then again, if they've finally got rid of Rick Berman, perhaps we might finally get some LGBT representation in the allegedly utopian Star Trek universe.
hansdampf Jun 01, 2009, 10:49 AM Yeah, I kinda hated the..
(:scan: Spoillon warning!)
killing off of Vulcan part. To me it smells like just another excuse for some bombastic CGI fracking around. The two brainiacs, that came up with the script, even wanted to blow the damn Enterprise up! Paramount(off all people) forbade it.
Well eventually I will watch the flic on DVD. But so far it seems like TOS bombastic, with good actors pulling it out of the brain-fail category.
So bottom line, plz ignore the new ST XI Enterprise.
me_myrmidon Jun 13, 2009, 08:22 PM I would vote: go with the 1701 alpha refit Enterprise: in comparing the designs from apenpaap's post, the new movie Enterprise looks like what would happen if an Italian and a Chrysler car designer collaborated over the original Star Fleet Technical Manual designs
- Italian designer went a little too swoopy with the secondary hull...not really a cruiser design but more for a sports car.
- Chrysler designer insisted on shoving on these blocky warp nacelles that totally do NOT mesh with the rest of the ship.
- however, the saucer section looks just right
The refit looks like a starship. It is the realized rebirth for the original series.
Since we're talking about the "Star Trek 2" mod, then a "refit Enterprise" would match perfectly.
Looking forward to the next mod!

We already have the refit in: it's the Light II. The question is which one do you prefer for the Light I. I prefer the original for several reasons: it looks way better, the Abrahms abomination is from a parralel universe, and we have all known the original for 40 years. Here's a funny picture about it, BTW:

Right, except this a Ship form another Univers , it also doesnt look really good.
p.s.: Potentially it was the plan of the "Star Trek" 11 makers that Fiat buys Chrysler, because they wanted to have a new design company for "Star Trek" 12
me_myrmidon Jul 06, 2009, 08:27 PM Got confused by the pic of the 1701-a vs. the new movie Enterprise on page 1 of this thread...
So I vote for Constitution class from the original series. In fact, as close to the exact proportion as shown in the Starfleet Technical Manual as possible.
TC01 Jul 11, 2009, 08:35 PM Is this really an issue anymore, since we know that the new Enterprise is an alternate universe ship?
What I mean is, will the result of this poll actually mean anything?
deanej Jul 11, 2009, 10:09 PM The poll doesn't mean anything now, because I made my decision last April (and carried out in 2.0). I stayed with the original design.
JareshInyo Aug 28, 2009, 04:28 PM Here's a compromise. The new enterprise could be used for the alternate universe civilization (the terran empire). The original could stay as the federation's light 1.
TC01 Aug 28, 2009, 04:47 PM This poll is pretty old- deanej already decided to go with the regular one, and it was rendered useless after we found out the new movie was in an alternate universe/new timeline.
I think it would be a bit silly to use the new Enterprise in the Terran Empire simply because it makes no sense. The Mirror Universe has nothing to do with the new timeline.
Onyx135 Jan 22, 2010, 10:45 AM This (http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/new-enterprise-size-comparison-chart-2.jpg) Is why the original needs to be used. When they made the new movie they boched everything that had to do with the ships. If they remade the borg it might be something like this. . . .NOW::borg: --> when "they" get their hands on it. :scan:
deanej Jan 22, 2010, 03:12 PM Personally I don't believe the large size of the new one. But then again, I'm a little more liberal when it comes to literally interpreting everything than most other trekkies.
I think everyone should just say this: the studio execs are wrong, it's the same size as the TMP Enterprise, and let's just ignore anything that contradicts that unless there is a very compelling reason to do so otherwise.

I agree. Making the shuttlebay that huge was just a stupid mistake like the thing in The Final Frontier with the Enterprise-A having like 80 decks.
deanej Jan 22, 2010, 03:46 PM The odd thing is that most of the people who complain about inconsistencies and other stuff about the new movie just ignore the inconsistencies in TOS, which probably contradicts itself more than all the other series combined (the first season alone has more contradictions, both in quantity and severity, then the entirety of Star Trek: Enterprise, for example).
I actually prefer the "it looked something like that, but we saw something different on TV" idea, but the latest Star Trek: Enterprise novels contradict that.
