View Full Version : Super quick USA question
Zefyrinus Mar 02, 2009, 07:44 AM Actually it's two questions. I'm creating a scenario that takes place 30 years into the future, and I'm wondering who I should have as president for the Americans. For all the civs, I've just picked someone who's living today, even if that person would be unlikely to still be the ruler after 30 years. I'm using only the games LHs, not one's that people have created themselves. And USA is the only country I have problems with, I can't pick Obama because the only black LH is already taken. So who should I choose?
Now to the other question. Washington, New York and a bunch of other cities will be flooded in this scenario, so what should be the capital? Wasn't there like some emergency evacuation place, which can even withstand a strike from a nuclear weapon, somewhere in the mountains where the government would go if Washington DC would be destroyed. What was that place called, and where is it?
AncientOne Mar 02, 2009, 08:10 AM I guess that palce in the mountains was called Crystal Palace, but as far as i know it has long since abandoned.. at least for the goverments emergency evac.
Deth McBones Mar 02, 2009, 11:11 AM If I were a high-ranking government official, and there were no weapons to penetrate mountains yet, I'd go to NORAD which is somewhere in the Cheyenne Mountains in Colorado
. As for the president, depends on which way the country swings, whether toward the Democrats or Republicans. Rising (young) stars in the Republican party include Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska. Democrats have a young(ish) John Edwards, and if you stretch out some politician's life spans, Hillary Clinton could get her shot after everybody else is dead.
(And my guess would be that during times of extreme violence, Republicans would get votes, but during times of extreme global warming Democrats would get votes)
And I'm going to stop there before I get myself in trouble.
AndrewG Mar 02, 2009, 03:08 PM I'm assuming from the second question that the eastern seaboard is mostly unusable. You could go with tradition and move the capital back to Philadelphia, or pick another major city like Chicago (I'd stay away from L.A., but that's just my 2 cents).
Regarding the leaderhead, please PLEASE go with Sarah Palin. I can use the leaderhead as an alternate in my own mod in progress, plus the dialogue would be hilarious. :)
Barring that, I'd pick a rising young star as Deth stated, or go with the son or daughter of a prominent politician (political dynasties aren't too uncommon). President Chelsea Clinton, anyone?

"I've looked outside my back-yard and noticed your little cute soldiers, bless their hearts. Remove them immediately, you cute little &$#@."- President Palin to the Emperor of Mexico.
And GOD NO to Chelsea Clinton. (More like President Jenna Bush :p)
TheOverseer714 Mar 02, 2009, 03:58 PM The Bushes and the Clintons ran America for 20 years, so america does have a sort of political dynasty process. As far as a capital after serious global warming raises the oceans tremendously, Denver might be a good choice, its high, its fairly central and it's already a regional center. I could see the navies would be very powerful and the INS would be the top gov't agency due to the vast number of displaced persons.

Ozymandias Mar 02, 2009, 06:14 PM Hmm ... Realistically speaking, a President would be age 35 (Constitutional minimum) ~ 70 years of age, meaning someone currently 5 to 40 years old. That effectively rules out Senators and Governors, so I'd go with (depending upon your political persuasion) the most compelling member of the House age 40 or younger. Or a particularly compelling movie star (how old is Alec Baldwin?)
Insofar as a capitol goes, if at war I'd agree with Cheyenne Mountain. If at peace, I'd recommend the most important city unaffected by presumed global warming. My bet: Chicago.

King Coltrane Mar 02, 2009, 10:13 PM actors huh...President Depp anyone?
I would say that if the eastern seaboard flooded, theres a chance that the st. lawrence river also would flood, thereby flooding the great lakes, so chicago might be under too. my vote is with Denver...

Check out the second and third maps HERE. (http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/globe/) The first is pesent day, the second+65 foot water levels (which pretty much every crystal of ice on the Earth has melted). For much of the in-between, there is Chicago ... ;)

Uh-oh... I'd be dead by now if it rose that much.... overnight
I don't think it will be that high, but around that much though
Balthasar Mar 03, 2009, 04:14 AM Well, there go all the good nudist beaches.
As for names to watch for in 2030, here are a few:
Youth
Tatiana Kennedy
Chelsea (see? she already only needs one name, like her mother)
Andrew Giuliani
Amy Carter
Phoebe Gates (I guess Bill & Melinda loved Ridgemont High)
Sasha Obama
Jack Robbins (son of Sarandon & Robbins)
Jenna Bush
Christopher Schwarzenegger
Dakota Fanning
Piper Palin
Experience
Beau Biden
Andrew Cuomo
Debbie W. Schultz
Eric Cantor
Kirsten Gillibrand (current youngest US Senator)
Jesse Jackson, Jr.
Shaun Donovan (Wunderkind director of HUD)
As for which political party would be in power, if you assume either eight or twelve year cycles, it would be the Republican's turn, but in the circumstance you describe, we might see the first Green Party president.
Zefyrinus Mar 03, 2009, 11:43 AM Thanks to everyone who's been so helpful! :)

Oh, I see.
If I were a high-ranking government official, and there were no weapons to penetrate mountains yet, I'd go to NORAD which is somewhere in the Cheyenne Mountains in Colorado
Hmm, actually, I think this was the one I was thinking of. At least the name Cheyenne rings a bell.

Sarah Palin, lol. The scenario I'm making is both afflicted by global warming and is full of war. Hmm... I think Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton are good candidates. Maybe they have new anti-aging treatments based on stem cells in the future. Lol, it just suits perfectly, Hillary is a democrat so she shouldn't have any problems with it. Palin would be against it, but she doesn't need any cause she'd only be like, what 60?, by then.
I'm assuming from the second question that the eastern seaboard is mostly unusable. You could go with tradition and move the capital back to Philadelphia, or pick another major city like Chicago (I'd stay away from L.A., but that's just my 2 cents).
Maybe I should've given out a little more details. The water level will have risen by about 200 m, so both Philadelphia and Chicago will go.
Regarding the leaderhead, please PLEASE go with Sarah Palin. I can use the leaderhead as an alternate in my own mod in progress, plus the dialogue would be hilarious. :)
Um, but I'm not making any LHs. I'm doing this without any modded graphics.

I'm not worried too much about realism, since for other countries I've already picked people who would be like mummy dust by then.
Or a particularly compelling movie star (how old is Alec Baldwin?)

Whoe, that's a pretty thought out list. Thanks!

Hmm, I had put Denver as capital in my premature city list.
Ethan Moreau Mar 03, 2009, 11:46 AM Have an ancient-looking John McCain as president. Seriously, though, how about Palin or Lindal? In the event of an emergency evacuation, by the way, the President, vice-President, chief of staff and deputy chief of staff all go to Air Force One.

lol At first I was thinking "if I can't have Obama, then maybe I could have that guy he was running up against, who was it again? Oh yeah, McCain. My god, he would be like 300 years old by then".
Deth McBones Mar 03, 2009, 12:13 PM After a quick wikipedia search on Crystal Palace, it turns out NORAD's bunker in the Cheyenne mountains and Crystal Palace are one and the same. 'Crystal Palace' was a nickname, but has fallen out of use apparently.
And I believe the President and Vice-President can never be together in the same place during emergency situations, but I could be wrong.
JSnider Mar 03, 2009, 07:49 PM Well if the Appalachians are the new beach front the Executive side already has a wonderful retreat there that has everything they need to keep the gov going. If not then Crystal would probably be reactivated and folks go there. But if it is a transfer of capital then I'd go with Denver or Colorada Springs. Leaders .. who knows, 5 years ago would anyone have said Obama?
CiaranB123 Mar 04, 2009, 04:39 AM I remember NORAD was on the fallout mod :p
