I said it might or might not...

The thing is with vanilla is that in the editor there is not a unit or city placer so you can't place units or cities and thats a big reason not many people mod it

I would recommend getting conquests though

You'll be lucky to find many many people still making mods for vanilla Civ3 deathrain111. Might have to have a go at that one yourself :)

modding the game isnt too difficult. i also only have the vanilla civ 3, and prior to visiting this site, had no idea how to add units etc...

First thing is to make sure you have the latest version (1.29f)

There are quite a few detailed tutorials around that will guide you through the steps needed, but 1 thing i will say, which isn't mentioned in the tutorials, is that you NEED to check the .ini file that comes with any unit you download to make sure you have all the files called on (and for spelling errors:rolleyes:). One example is that while you can download and use any unit posted here, quite a few of them call on sounds which were included with PTW or C3C (Spanish King.amb seems to be the favourite). If you only have vanilla you won't have this file which will cause a crash when you try to build the unit in question. To rectify this, just delete that entry from the .ini file (by that i mean just delete the "..\king..................etc" part and not the "fortify=" part of the file.) Hope that makes sense.

As for spelling errors etc., you will find a few, sorry Hikaro, but 1 or 2 of your units, while absolutely excellent, have incorrect .ini files (i remember one of them calling on the Death Machine .wav files for instance), but to be safe, just check that all the files required by the unit have the correct name and are in the same folder as the unit.

By the way there are actually 1 or 2 units in the normal game with spelling mistakes in their .ini file as well (i can't recall off the top of my head which unit(s) they were and it may well have been fixed by the latest patch

As for testing your units and making sure they work as desired, i'd suggest making a scenario where you define your own starting position (just right click on any starting position on a random map in the editor and assign it to player 1). Place a few barbarian huts nearby (overlays in editor). Then try to produce your units 1 by 1 and if any of them crashes, you know where the problem is so check their files.

I would suggest that prior to testing you give all units base values for attack/defense/movement etc.. and not include any upgrade or resource requirements. Only put these in after you are happy that the unit works.

The above only deals with units, i havent messed around with techs or buildings yet myself (new ones), but again, there are comprehensive tutorials contained in this site, so i wouldn't expect you to have much trouble with them, just be wary of abilities etc.. that aren't available in the vanilla game.
Can someone clarify : Do produce unit every x turns buildings work in the vanilla game

All in all, making your own mod is easy enough, getting it to work how you think it should is a lot more difficult, and can be very time consuming. Just to be aware, you can expect to spend about 10 minutes adding each unit (not including the time it takes to think up a suitable civilopedia entry (not necessary)).

And finally some programs to recommend are GIMP for adding unit_32.pcx files to your existing one (be careful) and i would also recommend downloading Zulu's excellent unit_32.pcx file to replace your base one.

I know all of the above (not to mention the stuff said in the tutorials mentioned) seems a lot, but once you get the hang of it its not so bad, just time consuming and a little tedious.

And i should have said it can be very rewarding as well (assuming it turns out how you wanted it to)

Anyway, have fun
