View Full Version : Of art
thomas.berubeg Mar 13, 2009, 01:24 PM I have some of the old art I had in the older version, hidden somewhere on my computer.
I am hunting for it, and will upload it when I find them... the worst is the loss of all the buildings Charley777 (was that him?) made over two years ago, before the hacker.
I don't have any of those anymore, lost them in an unbacked up crash, so unless elda has them, They are lost.
xmen510 Mar 13, 2009, 02:06 PM That is too bad. We might have to hunt for more art then.
Berenthor Mar 13, 2009, 03:57 PM Frenchman made some leaderheads for lord of the rings (link). The drawback is it is a limited list of leaderheads and if we use these we have to have similar ones for the other leaders otherwise they clash.
Sengir Mar 13, 2009, 04:16 PM I think I'll leave the art-stuff in the hands off people capable of judging it ;) Would be nice if you can salvage anything Thomas. Do you have a place to upload it? Otherwise I can provide you with one.
thomas.berubeg Mar 13, 2009, 04:48 PM I would use Filefront, but idk if it's very good.
what do you have to offer?
Sengir Mar 13, 2009, 04:49 PM I've got hosting for multiple websites, so I can set a ftp-account up for you. (as long as it's not too many mb's that is)
Crap, I can't seem to add another user, so I'll have to fix something else. Will get back to you on this.
Never mind, I was looking at the wrong place :crazyeye:
thomas.berubeg Mar 13, 2009, 05:10 PM Elda King might have some of the Old art files, still...
we had some nice buildings... (Chuggi and woodelf might still have thiers)
xmen510 Mar 13, 2009, 05:26 PM no longer relevant.
T_F Mar 13, 2009, 09:44 PM Those leaders look like they go with Civ3...
I'll leave art to those more competent in it.
Sengir Mar 14, 2009, 05:50 AM I've made an ftp-account for this mod, it can handle 3g storage, 50g monthly (roughly). Drop me a pm with your e-mail-adress if you need access to it.
thomas.berubeg Mar 14, 2009, 09:07 AM Alright
Will do. (probably Tonight, after work)
Elda King Mar 14, 2009, 12:15 PM My PC is broken, but after it is fixed (may take a very long time) I'll see what I have. Probably only what Thomas included in the mod... I usually restricted my work to code and text, and only later I'd add art.
xmen510 Mar 15, 2009, 05:56 PM I downloaded these just in case they ever disappear.

I have looked at both and they seem to be a good start for scenario maps. Some editing would of course be needed. Also, they are not BTS maps, but earlier versions.
thomas.berubeg Mar 15, 2009, 07:13 PM DL also all the other things on this page. they will be useful as buildings. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=214401&highlight=lotr)
xmen510 Mar 15, 2009, 07:29 PM Thanks Thomas.
I chose 3 from there. The ones I thought fit the best. I wasn't really sure about some of the others, some links do not work anymore either (probably because of the hack). I guess I can get the others. I tend not to get stuff if there is no image however.
For hrochlands stuff. Again, a few links were broken and I didn't download any of the wones without images. I got the rest and added them to the list above.
T_F Mar 15, 2009, 07:54 PM I assume we can use a lot of stuff (esp Hell terrain) from FFH too.
xmen510 Mar 15, 2009, 08:05 PM Yeah, I am sure we can. I just thought that since a LOT of this is older stuff, I should get it as soon as possible. I also thought it would be good to organize it for easy access for those who are interested. Everything except for the Lots of Stuff section I have downloaded myself, so I have a copy of everything.
Updated post #13 with a bunch of new info.
Sengir Mar 16, 2009, 03:14 AM Good work. Please make backups as well (either on cd or using the ftp-account).
Berenthor Mar 16, 2009, 01:39 PM They look really good. I think for leaderheads we should go with static ones I would say, because that gives us a lot more possibilities for leaders. The ones from Frenchman are good (they are for Civ4 I think) but they should match the other ones (these look very 3D graphics while the ones for less famous leaders might be different).
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 03:31 PM Appologies go out to thomas.berubeg.
I have now added your 2 pieces of art to the above list. I can't believe I forgot yours.
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 03:55 PM I have thousands of Movie based Images and Art (movie based and not) that I can share.
A sample of what I have in the way of Movie Based Images:
T_F Mar 16, 2009, 04:08 PM Sweet! That's going to be helpful.
You can take that last one (the White Tree) and make that the banner for Gondor.
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 04:17 PM A smaller version of the Eye of Sauron I put in a request to get it made into a Flag and Civ Banner for the Interface. We'll see how it goes.
Sengir Mar 16, 2009, 04:28 PM I've got quite a lot available as well. I will make a list of books with art I have so we can compare notes, ehm I mean pictures. ;)
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 04:30 PM Not books. I mean individual pics. Over 500 (maybe up to 1000) pieces of Art and over 1000 Images based on/from the movies.
Sengir Mar 16, 2009, 04:37 PM All right, you win :p
That's going to be nice to draw upon. As I've mentioned in another thread (or maybe it was this one), I think I would prefer all art, but would mind if we decided to mix it or go solely with screencaps (though that might be a tad hard, seeing as there's no movie for the Silmarillion :( )
thomas.berubeg Mar 16, 2009, 04:40 PM It's also possible to edit Screen caps to make them look painted, if need be... ;)
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 04:42 PM A mix would be needed if we went with the screencaps/movie art. After all, Feanor doesn't appear in the Movies :p.
So no matter what we chose to go with, Art will be a must.
EDIT: Added Para.B and Ploeperpengal to the art list.
T_F Mar 16, 2009, 05:40 PM Yup, we'll need art. There's the question then: Do we go all art, or mix in screencaps?
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 05:41 PM I think that a mix would be best, though I am not against going all art either.
T_F Mar 16, 2009, 05:46 PM Same here.
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:02 PM Here are quite a few flags and devices to use. Also some art of the movies which can be very good as well:
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:03 PM And some more:
* The Attached Image is The Device of the High Kings (Elves)
T_F Mar 16, 2009, 08:06 PM We need to discuss Flags in the Civs thread next, probably.
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:11 PM And Even More:
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:12 PM And Yet More:
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:14 PM And the Last Batch:
* The Attached Image is the Star of Feanor
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:17 PM I'm sorry, but that is all I could come up with for now.
T_F: I thought it would be best here for art, but you may be correct.
T_F Mar 16, 2009, 08:47 PM Oh wow, dang. There's a lot of stuff in there that'll be useful.
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:49 PM What the heck: 2 More :goodjob:
xmen510 Mar 16, 2009, 08:57 PM What the hey! Boromir's Banner!
thomas.berubeg Mar 17, 2009, 02:09 PM http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=314353
I also DLed blender, and have been playing with it. I'll see what I can come up with.
xmen510 Mar 17, 2009, 04:40 PM I noticed that the other day, but I wasn't sure if they would be good or not. I figured maybe the first two and the tree one would fit best for looks.
T_F Mar 17, 2009, 06:42 PM The tree one and the first two definitely look good. We might be able to use the brown tower for some sort of Haradrim fortification, maybe.
The first one especially looks good, that could be the Haradrim palace.
xmen510 Mar 18, 2009, 12:00 PM Here is a Better Eye than the one I put in the request thread:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=207434&d=1237395622
Perhaps a good LeaderHead or Interface Screen Banner for Sauron/Mordor, to make him more remote.
T_F Mar 18, 2009, 12:09 PM It's a good Sauron LH, I think. However, that brings up the question of which version of Sauron are we going to use for this mod - with or without a body?
xmen510 Mar 18, 2009, 12:20 PM I think the Eye is more intimidating, however, using an actual person would be good as well. If I had to choose I would say the Great Eye would be the better choice (IMO).
T_F Mar 18, 2009, 12:23 PM I agree it's a better (and more unique) choice, I was just wondering since it's the historical actions of Isildur that cause him to be that way, and things might not happen that way in the mod.
xmen510 Mar 18, 2009, 12:26 PM True. We could use a standard leaderhead in the overall mod and the Eye for a third age scenario. In fact, I am sure I have a picture of him before he became black, but still looked like a Maiar from the movie.
EDIT: The standard Sauron image (All Black Armor, etc.) is fine with me.
T_F Mar 18, 2009, 12:36 PM Well, he pretty much was. I think a black one would be OK, it's also caused by historical action but it's not as big a change as losing a body, and it's more distinctive than your average Maia.
Sengir Mar 18, 2009, 04:25 PM I would go for Sauron as person as well, not as eye.
xmen510 Mar 18, 2009, 04:39 PM Walter Hawkwood, who did the Landmarks Pack has released his Ruins, Camps & Lairs Pack.
I think we just found a great Image to use for Orodruin (Mount Doom). Other great stuff there too.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=314520
T_F Mar 18, 2009, 10:37 PM Ooh, great Mount Doom. The spider lair looks useful too, and we might make a warg lair out of one of the others. The camp one may be useful for Harad.
xmen510 Mar 19, 2009, 10:18 AM You know, I was looking through Zerver's stuff, including his new Hungarian Settlers (check them out in the Unit Graphics Forum, Amazign work). He has done some really great stuff. It even looks like he did a couple of things for the early incarnation of this Mod.
Unless someone disagrees, I think we should see if he is willing to participate in this new attempt at getting this MOD up and running.
I don't know if anyone else here is good at doing units and Leaderheads and such. If there is, just give a shout.
This is Zerver's page:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/member.php?u=116686&page=7
Sengir Mar 19, 2009, 10:27 AM Getting an artist on board would give us a lot of freedom, so I'm all for it. I only know that I'm not good at it :D
T_F Mar 19, 2009, 01:00 PM Yeah, we need an artist. If you can get him on board, go for it!
Personally, I suck at all forms of visual art.
thomas.berubeg Mar 19, 2009, 01:22 PM Get a Working model out first, is my recomendation. Use placeholder art, which will piss artists off so much they will submit thier own art.
Sengir Mar 19, 2009, 01:25 PM That works too :rotfl:
T_F Mar 19, 2009, 01:53 PM :P
Though it's not a bad idea, at least to focus on getting a working mod instead of a pretty mod.
xmen510 Mar 19, 2009, 02:04 PM I agree. Lets get this working.
Then, we can make it all SHINY! :goodjob:
xmen510 Mar 19, 2009, 03:50 PM I have now sent a Formal (and formally written) Invitation to Zerver to join the team. I am waiting to hear back from him.
I have kept the PM sent, so If you are interested in seeing how I worded the request, feel free to PM me and I'll send you a copy of what I wrote.
Berenthor Mar 21, 2009, 07:02 AM Lets use FFH2 art for now as much as possible and for the leaderheads, just get static leaderhead pictures, preferably compatible with each other: not movie leaderheads mixed with drawings mixed with black and white etc. Try to find a common sort of images for these.
xmen510 Mar 21, 2009, 08:56 AM I agree. If we do a mix it wouldn't look right. All art is the way to go then until someone is able to make movie quality images. Or, if they can be made good, ones like what Zerver has done, make them specifically for the Mod. That can come later however.
T_F Mar 21, 2009, 10:46 AM For now we can just use some Alan Lee and John Howe art for the leaderheads. If we want we can revisit them later, but they may be sufficient by themselves.
xmen510 Mar 21, 2009, 01:05 PM By GeoModder: Ethnic Citystyles:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downlo...o=file&id=9422
We might be able to use some of this for some of the Human Civs. I doubt that we will be having the Citystyles change from beyond the Middle Ages, so hopefully this will help cut down some of the work. I am also posting this in the Featurelist thread.
Berenthor Mar 22, 2009, 06:51 AM I would suggest to use the city styles from FFH2 for now. They already have quite a lot of diversity and then later on we can add our own to make them even more distinct and unique per civ. Also, maybe it is good to post some suggestions of art wants someone finds it. Especially for the leaderheads and maybe for the flags of the civs (bannors and sigils and stuff).
xmen510 Mar 22, 2009, 06:53 AM Allright. A page or two early I posted quite a bit of stuff for devices and flags and such. Hopefully that will also help.
I'll start winnowing through my art collection and seeing what I have available.
xmen510 Mar 22, 2009, 08:19 AM A Gil-Galad Flag:
xmen510 Mar 22, 2009, 09:44 AM I have now updated the FTP with the above flag and a Folder full of possible art for Leaderhads, Heroes, etc.
Team members: If I have yet to share the FTP Info with you, please PM me to get that information.
EDIT: Updated possible Leaderhead art Folder at 11:28am with another 29 Files.
xmen510 Mar 25, 2009, 01:38 PM More great work by Walter Hawkwood on the way.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=315398
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=12012
Berenthor Mar 25, 2009, 02:15 PM These are also really great. We can really use a lot of these.
xmen510 Mar 25, 2009, 02:17 PM Walter Hawkwood has granted us permission to use his work. He also suggested mining his Total Realism Mod for stuff.
Berenthor Mar 25, 2009, 02:25 PM That is good news. We're going to have to keep a list of contributors so we don't forget anyone :)
T_F Mar 25, 2009, 04:56 PM Wonderful! The Barbarian one looks good for maybe Harad, the Dwarf one looks like a more solid Haradrim one, Elven looks great for Sindar, Human looks great for Númenor and its descendants (maybe with modifications the Noldor too), and the Undead one looks perfect for Mordor.
xmen510 Mar 25, 2009, 09:24 PM I found this great picture of Aragorn by John Howe. I uploaded it to the FTP.
xmen510 Mar 28, 2009, 10:24 AM Walter Hawkwood has just released his Human fantasy Pack. Great Stuff. I have downloaded it and updated the FTP.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=315821
With a little Colour changing these could work for all of the "Good Men" Civs.
Berenthor Mar 28, 2009, 11:04 AM Yeah they look really great. Maybe not for all, but for Numenor/Gondor/Arnor these are great. For Rohirrim, Haradrim, Easterlings, Northmen we need some different ones. Edain I'm not sure. Maybe we can use these ones for the Edain as well (not sure if it was more stone or wood or what style).
T_F Mar 29, 2009, 11:53 AM I think Edain need wood-ness. The ones with blue roofs are really best for Númenórian civs, though the brown-roofed ones are OK.
xmen510 Mar 30, 2009, 10:24 AM Walter Hawkwood has released his Wood Elves pack:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=316041
Berenthor Mar 30, 2009, 02:03 PM He is going great with these packs :). They look really awesome and definetly usable.
xmen510 Mar 30, 2009, 02:04 PM It is deffinately going to save time.
T_F Mar 30, 2009, 04:56 PM One word: Awesome.
xmen510 Apr 06, 2009, 05:28 PM Fantasy Pack 6: Dwarves is out by Walter Hawkwood.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=316786
T_F Apr 06, 2009, 08:25 PM It looks a little bit more desert-y than what I think of for Tolkien's dwarves, but it could easily come in useful wherever.
xmen510 Apr 06, 2009, 08:39 PM Indeed. It looks a bit too much like Warcraft, but it might be useful. I was hoping for something more rocklike, but it is still great work.
xmen510 Apr 07, 2009, 03:47 PM Fantasy Pack 7: Resources has been released. I love the look of the Gold.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=316890
T_F Apr 07, 2009, 08:29 PM The gold is indeed beautiful, and maybe if we reskin it it could double as Mithril. I also love the look of the iron, it looks so perfect for something involving the Shadow (but IDK what, maybe as Iron on a Hell terrain-equivalent tile).
xmen510 Apr 08, 2009, 04:46 PM Wyz_sub10 might be able to help us out with Flags and buttons. Hopefully he will have the time. I know that he is quite busy.
Berenthor Apr 09, 2009, 01:55 AM The gold and the stone is really usable I think. The mines also look really good to use as improvements for a specific race. There are some flags by Chuggy for LotR which may be usable. I think flags are luckily not awfully difficult so if he won't be able to do that, I will take a look at them if I have the time this weekend.
xmen510 Apr 10, 2009, 12:55 PM Walter Hawkwood has release his Undead Pack. I think it would look great for Mordor/Angband.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7969110#post7969110
