View Full Version : Here is an example of pure AI stupidity

This is from a game played on 'Emperor' where the ai supposed to be cranked up pretty good.

If you look at the first picture you can see that me, the french, is on the top of the power dog pile. Now one would think this distinction would command some respect from other nations.

Nope.

Please look at the following second picture for what happened next.

Here Cleopatra thought I would fork over my most valuable tech - the key to the Great Library - to avoid having to face the wrath of her mousquitos (warriors actually).

I've found that some Civs will ALWAYS demand Literature. It seems that they do that because they know the value of the Great Library, but don't want to research Literature that early.

In about 50% of my games if I'm taking a b-line to the Great Library, I end up going to war because I refuse a demand for Literature.

I tried to put in some more pictures continuing this story and got this crap:

The file that you have tried to attach is too big. The maximum size is 250000 bytes.

*sigh* oh well. sorry, no more pictures.

Alright, I cropped the picture to make it fit the small attachment limit. Here we have a very eager Shaka, leader of the zulu, chomping at the bit to get it on with Cleopatra. All I did was throw him a small biscuit - some 2 bit tech which even I have no idea what its for - and he's ready to fight tooth and nail with his neighbor. These neighbor vs neighbor fights are the most nasty 'cause the two nations are lined up against each other. Shaka didn't mind though.

Alright, same game, and here is Catherine of Russia proving what an airhead she is (ie: the stupidity of the AI). She wants me to give up a perfectly valuable tech (I'm not sure what its for either but anyways...) for a penny and a map of her land which I've already completely scoped out with my auto-explore warriors.
I felt like declaring war over this insult, but didn't have the heart (or enough offensive units which could make the long treck there without being utterly obsolete upon arrival). This is typical of the "tech deals" the AI always offers me, even when it has tech I don't have.

AI tends to put a pretty high value on maps and code of laws could be very cheap if everybody else already have it.

The "Great History of the World" means nothing really.

What mod are you running?

unscratchedfoot
Sep 04, 2002, 08:45 AM
This isn't really a mod, just my own version I put together (I made the map too).

Don't you have difficulty concentrating on the game itself?

BTW, I'd have thought that Shaka would be the first image to change.

I like the new advisors :)

No way man, that hideous caricature previously representing Catherine made my stomach churn. I got some pretty ugly people in my game too like Kohl for Germany is quite gruesome and Churchill for the english is no heart's desire either.

Here's another cheapshot attempt by the AI to try and pocket my priceless Great Library tech. Ain't no one gettin it from me even at spearpoint. I felt like giving her a kick in the jugs.

The "Glorious" French have two cities!!! Just because you are currently ranked at the top, doesn't mean that you have anything resembling a substantial lead, and as evidenced by the AI's behaviour, not one worth fearing!

Cheers,
Shawn

Pictures are worth a thousand words, a thousand minutes to those of us with modems.

LOL I hope its worth the wait.

Shawn, hey!! I had 3 cities, now 4!! I managed to get Madrid in Spain. Italy lost 3 settlers escorted by spearmen to barbarian attacks going in there hehe!! No one's doin any better than I am (see the mini map in the corner). Russia is big but weak and has an airhead for a leader. I could clear it out of asia on a whim using an alliance but first I wanna let everyone grow and build up a nice army before starting a world war.

This picture shows the smallness of Rome, Germany, Israel and the arabs under arafat. I had to crop the picture a lot to fit in the miniscule attachment allowance. Baghdad is the city to the right of Jerusalem. I'm still one of the top dogs. Here you can see Loins, my 3rd city with a bustling 3 population. The arabs weasled in and placed a city in the greek peninsula. My map here is not so well drawn due to the limitations of placing 16 civs on a standard size map. I had to because Marla's world map was just way too big for my computer to handle.

I like this shot because its the first time I've ever seen someone happy about descending into anarchy. She's dreaming about all the unregulated orgies coming up.

These mods look like GenghisFarb's leaderheads with Womak's terrain.

That's right. The terrain is a combo of Womak, Snoopy terrain, Snoopy cities, GenghisFarb's urban sprawl etc. plus other terrain changes to huts and barbarian villages. The resources I took off the extra resource picture file included with the original civ 3 game. Plus over 100 new units added from the unit graphics forum - all except 2 are modern era units so they don't show up here.

Call me old fashioned, but these graphics mods are just too much for me. IMO the standard graphics are much easier to follow.

I'm not too keen on the terrain mod overall, it looks a little garish for my tastes. However, that screenshot that shows that tundra forest is beautiful. THAT is how the frozen wastes should look in CivIII.

You folks like things boring or what? I couldn't get motivated to play civ again with the drab original graphics and the same units for every country. Perhaps firaxis should include several terrain styles and multiple country leaders for players to choose from.

PTW, is supposed to include at least 3 new terrain sets.

I'm not gonna bother with PTw because I'd have to completely re-edit the game all over again - too much work for some additional nations and UU's I have no interest in.

If you want to put the whole picture on the page switch from .bmp file to .jpg file. For me it only takes up 80 kb for a whole picture.

unscratchedfoot
Sep 04, 2002, 05:49 PM
Those are .jpg picture files I use. I've never had my screenshots rejected before by the system. I think some changes were made to the CFC forums a little while ago which restricts attachments for some weird reason.

Bobela XII
Sep 04, 2002, 06:25 PM
Really? The jpeg fits the 250kb max for me.

FYI, those 'Great Books' are entirely random, for the most part. There probably is some influence fromthe reality of the game, but rarely. I often have the most cities/territory and am way ahead in tech and score, yet those darn historians keep ranking me as the worst or near-worst 'powerful' or 'rich' or whatever civ.

Especially so early in the game, the first screenshot means noting. Nice-looking mod BTW. But I prefer the standard rules.

YAHHHH!!!!!!!! Napolean lives again! :p

Anyways this picture is for those of you who don't believe me when I tell you that the forum can't handle jpeg files. Note the size of this picture 303000bites AFTER CROPPING! This is over the forum attachment limit of 250000.

To those who insisted I was lying: a picture tells a thousand words.

Alright!! Here's old man Kohl, the chancellor of Germany, on his knees begging for mercy after being persuaded by Egypt, China, Japan and India to attack me. I guess the stack of units next to Berlin might have something to do with it. To all those who told me I was weak despite being on the top of the power list, eat it!

The other AI's are suing for peace one after another. They know what's coming. They're just lucky I'm too far away and tech is not advanced enough yet for me to give them a quick wooping.
:D

You will have to compress the picture, too. 80-100 Kb seems to be a good compromise between picture size and quality.

Okay, how exactly do you do that? I haven't compressed a file before, if you don't mind.

Here we can see Shaka of the zulu hated by all except me. The reason? He's my friend and he joined me in my defense against evil Egypt. There are another 3 or 4 other countries also at war with the poor fellow not shown on this screen including South Africa right below him. This shows how the AI not only hates the human player, but also anyone the human is friends with. One the other hand, the AI is starting to respect my power and is backing off a lot. I believe I'm not at war with anyone right now. This is the nature of bullies.

The AI offers me deals like 'low gold and my world map' all the time (well, as long as I'm ahead of course), I guess they do that when they're broke.

You gotta go to Apolyton's graphics mods forum and it's made by GenghisFarb - a genius.

Shabbaman: they don't have any gold to give out because their tech rate is set to max. It's true. The AI is cheaper but marginally smarter with the patch (only on this one point). You can see it yourself when you establish an embassy and see the science bar maxed out with only 1 money coming in (the lowest possible).

Shabbaman
Sep 05, 2002, 02:29 AM
Yeah, I know that. It's just a little pity that they offer you deals like that when they 'will be insulted by this deal' if it's the other way around.

I donīt use PaintShop Pro so I canīt give exact advice, but you should find a compression slider when you "Save as" and select JPG. This is a screenshot from Window's in-built paint program, so it might look something like this:
