Spring and Autumn/Warring States era, the southern dukedoms/kingdoms (Chu, Wu, Yueh, etc.). That area was still heavily forested and considered the wild southern frontier/barbarian territory then.

I actually have a book that some of those are from- Imperial Chinese Armies: 200BC- 589AD (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Imperial-Chinese-Armies-BC-589-Men-at-arms/dp/1855325144/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237689111&sr=8-1). S'good. The publisher does tonnes of them, they're pretty cool. Not too heavy or academic and lots of cool illustrations, which is lucky if you have a short attention span. :p
