View Full Version : Role Play Challenge: Fickle Isabella and her quest for the 7 Holy Grails!
madscientist Mar 20, 2009, 04:18 PM Welcome the latest Mad Scientist RPC, Queen Isabella and her quest for the 7 Holy Grails! These games are meant to be fun and educational, with some unique twist to our beloved leaders! Here we pay Homage to her Zealotship! The last of the religion based games, and we saved the best for last. Isabella, Zealot supreme!
We plan to run a religious economy in this game, while getting Isabella to control all 7 holy cities AND build their shrines. However, Isabella is a fickle lady and needs to adopt to each newly acquired holy city's religion!
Game settings
Standard sized Hemishpere's Map (Selected to get some intercontinental action here)
Monarch Difficulty
Marathon Speed.
Rules
1) Isabella MUST control all 7 Holy cities and their shrines before whe can win the game.
2) Isabella MUST convert to the newest Holy city she acquires.
3) There is NO restrictions on diplomacy, warfare, or trades. She has no prejudice against any heathens!
4) We should try and focus on the religious wonders also although this is not required.
So the Grand Holy Dame!

And the Holy start!

HOLY SMOKES, what a start and what a Zealot, er I mean Woman!
PaulusIII Mar 20, 2009, 04:24 PM Work the fish and get an early religion. Overzealous Izzy demands it!
Low Beau Mar 20, 2009, 04:48 PM If you stay where you are at I can see 2 cities you should found just in this tiny lil' square. The 2nd of course being Rice/Gold city.
and also, I know it might sound totally jive, but how about making a rule that you cannot found a religion you must take over all 7 instead? Jive? ehh... just a thought that makes this game more different then the Spain on a Lake SullaSirian deal. Though I would assume that means no Oracle.
Good luck Mad, not that you really need it, I learn so much from reading your threads!
Stewie0416 Mar 20, 2009, 04:50 PM Wow, that seems like some nice land! Hopefully this one won't need 3 end game re rolls:lol:
But in all seriousness this should be quite interesting. If Saladin pops in that may cause some big problems. Protective LBs are REALLY annoying, but nothing a CR3 Treb couldn't solve

Isabella not found a religion? I don't think it's programmed that way! I am looking at hitting at least 3 early on. Stone for stonehenge, the early start on the Oracle! All we need is a little defense and we are set until teh middle ages!
By default I almost always start with Meditation with Isabella, but I think Poltheism is the way to go here. Followed by Masonry and perhaps Monotheism early, then Oracle CoL and perhaps Bulb Christianity!!!!
Glad to see you following the RPCs!
TheMeInTeam Mar 20, 2009, 05:37 PM Sadly this RPC isn't a good one for showcasing religious wonders, due to constantly changing state religions. Compared to last game, this should be easier.
Meditation + working seafood until it's founded, then hammers to finish workboat is the truth. Normally you want to work the cow first over seafood but the religion fits the RPC angle.
Probably founding as many religions as possible makes this a bit easier, so you don't have to go conquesting as much. Maybe not though. Maybe it's just better to do something like found 1 religion, stay in it until you get a big lead, then MASSIVELY FLATTEN the computers (lowers the great prophet count requirement too).
Phil725 Mar 20, 2009, 05:40 PM As sacrilegious as it is to Izzy, my vote would be for not founding any religions, or at least not more than one. It isn't that hard to get 6, but you can get 5 without too much effort at all. Controlling all of the holy cities isn't hard if you just have to invade the person who founded Buddhism. Especially since there aren't any crazy restrictions like the last few games.
Maybe just found Buddhism and hunt the rest of the holy cities? It just seems like if you try and found them all, it will just be Holy Sal again (although that was probably my favorite RPC.)
UWHabs Mar 20, 2009, 05:49 PM Unless if you hand-picked the opponents to be Justinian, Saladin, Charlemagne, Asoka, etc... I'd say you shouldn't be allowed to found more than 1.
madscientist Mar 20, 2009, 05:51 PM After the last 2 RPCs, I think I will indulge in an easier one. And it may not be as easy as everyone is making it.
Riffraffselbow Mar 20, 2009, 06:03 PM The goal in RPCs, IMO, shouldn't be difficulty; You should look to create a situation that leads to both fun play and a fun read. Difficulty is just one of many paths to that goal.

Very well put!
I do think there are alot of sadistic readers out there who love to see old Mad Scientists stuck with insanely difficult rules and somehow lead a massive army to destroy the entire world! Certainly nothing wrong with this :D , but a simple observation!
Loknar Mar 20, 2009, 07:20 PM I'm all for founding as many religions as possible :nuke:, best would be more then one in Madrid and one or two more in a science/commerce city.
Actually I'd suggest establishing Madrid 2W of the Settler, running Moai Statues there (GP), and another city 1S of the stone. :mischief:
Matthew5117 Mar 20, 2009, 08:56 PM ^Not a bad idea. I actually agree with the plan of setting 2W so that you can put another settler 1S of the stone.
TMIT has a good point, you can't showcase the religious economy here (unless you whip all the buildings like crazy each time you change a religion). I'm really intrigued to see the RE, so maybe you change alter the rules a little bit?
Other than that, I'm looking forward to this game.
Joshua368 Mar 20, 2009, 09:56 PM Well with Spiritual temples are extremely cheap, and monastaries are always cheap regardless of traits. Just whip them all! The buildings will still be handy even without the wonder benefits.
UWHabs Mar 20, 2009, 11:19 PM I guess you won't have time to get a worker, grab masonry, and get an early stone.
I'd consider doing a very unorthodox opening of something like workboat-workboat-settler-stonehenge, which is especially strange for an expansive leader. Then your second city around the gold could open with a worker. You want stonehenge early if you can to get that early GP pop to shrine a religion.
Thinking about this some more, I think this might not be as easy as we thought, since the rule of adopting the most recent religion means that you won't have the luxury of choosing religions for diplo purposes. Maybe showcasing this by getting an AP win would be pretty awesome.
Soirana Mar 21, 2009, 12:31 AM Well, i workbuilded this into Emperor Epic, changed colors and...
I quited somewhere in 1000BC
started by me loosing key blocker [more or less key] to Shaka for something like one turn. He placed it terribly but cut me off.
I ended settling behind Shaka [horses in SW] cause my workboat was something like two turns late to discover that island copper...
I went for HBR but when Shaka picked iron somewhere in Tundra with something like his seventh city i choosed to end missery. Aggresive spears on top of Shaka's unit probability... And very little choppable forests?
I do not say it is not possible map, neither that sharing early religion with Shaka can't be helpful, while expanding into islands...
I just have hard time remembering doing so bad on Emperor...
Belisar Mar 21, 2009, 03:05 AM I do think there are alot of sadistic readers out there who love to see old Mad Scientists stuck with insanely difficult rules
*cough* :mischief: sit down, tell me, why do do have this thought? *cough*
Seriously, I think it's more fun to chase the heathens than to just found all religions yourself.
bestje Mar 21, 2009, 05:41 AM I do think there are alot of sadistic readers out there who love to see old Mad Scientists stuck with insanely difficult rules and somehow lead a massive army to destroy the entire world!
who us?!?
I think founding all the religions will depend on who else is in the game, I would be interested in seeing if you manage to get both hinduism and buddhism how you did it. its something I can never manage to do.

Man, the last thing that I would want to do is make the game harder for ya Mad. Just more interesting. I thought the whole Warmonger Izzy would be easy for you and would add even more to her RP. But if that's not what you want to deal with than screw it. Besides the Madscientist I know doesn't lose wars anyways :goodjob:
Lansky Mar 21, 2009, 11:55 AM This looks like a lot of fun. Definitely want to play this one however, I think I'll ignore founding one of the first two religions and see how it plays out differently. Sounds like most people want to found an early one.
Edit -
Played to 700ish BC and regarding the decision to not go with an early religion:
I'm really curious to see how an early religion start would go. Even going for an early military after seeing Shaka with 2 gold mines in his BFC less than 5 turns in I had to scramble to get rid of him settling a far away city that is utterly useless other than to claim horses. There is no copper nearby, but thankfully Shaka hooked up Iron too late. What makes me curious is I did not time it exactly, but I think if I went for an early religion I would have lost by a couple turns.
At first I thought Monarch/Marathon would be a pushover but this map is a lot tougher than I at least initially thought from the opening screen.
dalamb Mar 21, 2009, 02:07 PM I've been playing Izzy on Earth 18 and have just started building citadel-enhanced catapults and trebuchets; I imagine conquering holy cities would become fairly easy at that point if you're keeping up in other regards.

One big reason I chose a hemishperes map, to avoid overwhelming the world with CR III Trebs. NOW, CR III Cannons are another matter> :D
semirami Mar 21, 2009, 04:21 PM You need either Sailing, or the Wheel to connect the stone, you need some military techs soon, so I guess you can have a religion, or cheap Stonehenge, but not both
Bleys Mar 21, 2009, 05:25 PM Seriously, I think it's more fun to chase the heathens than to just found all religions yourself.
Heh, very true.
I . . um . . . took some liberties with the World Builder tool and . . .
. . . I decided I didnt want to deal with this tiny island/Nutjob combo and moved Shaka to another spot. Tried not to peek at the map too much, because this really sounded like a cool game. Its so much easier to be able to just play. I also bumped it up to Emperor, including giving the Barbs Archery, Ag and Hunting, since I was in a non-isolated Isolation situation now, which is quite a bit different from being next to someone, a lot less urgency to the game.
I only post this to see if anyone else wants my edited WB save (no offense, I hope, mad scientist, this is kind of a harsh start), and to say my personal goal is a Double-Holy city for Madrid (Going to click Choose Religions in mine, and go Poly for Taoism, and Mono for Islam), then Chase the Heathens for the other five Holy Cities.
Bleys Mar 21, 2009, 07:56 PM Wow, I cant remember this ever happening in another game, a tile-upgrade event on my Capitol city tile!:
Truffle event gave my city tile +1F +1C. Never saw that before.
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj80/Bleys_bucket/Linc%20of%20Egypt/Civ4ScreenShot0058.jpg
EDIT: Very next turn I got the Health event! Only 1 city and no Slavery yet, its perfect timing.
CivCorpse Mar 21, 2009, 10:43 PM Very well put!

I think the next game you should give yourself Music, Alphabet and Currency...but you are not allowed to build any untis (including settler and workers) or buildings. Perhaps a pangea with monty, shaka and alex as neighbors.
Soirana Mar 21, 2009, 11:02 PM Heh, very true.

Cheating on Monarch?

madscientist Mar 22, 2009, 07:05 AM Fickle Isabella and the Quest of the Seven Holy Grails: The Holy Plunge into the Buddha's Enlightenment
I, oh mighty servent of the Gods, Isabella from a noble house, glorious parentage, and fearless Spanish people has been charged to lead usch mentioned fearless people onto many adventuresome quests to fine the truth about the ultimate purpose of the people of this amazing world and how the awe-inspiring gods (Rameses and Gilgamesh not included) have meant mankind to share in this wonderfully given world that we find ourselves in!
The god's surely will look out and bless these devout Spanish explorers, but first the Mighty Spanish Pilgrims must in fatc find a Holy home city from which to spread the faith to many, many, many others. To starts this, I Isabella, oh mighty servent of the Gods, has decided to trust in their superior intelligence and settle right in place.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0000.jpg
And oh grand divine beings, you have bequethed the Spanish people with grand knowledge of how to work the sea to live. Oh Mighty Gods, can I do anything but devote our peaoples early research to knowing thee? Thus, I Isabella oh Mighty servent of the Gods shalt contemplate the holy technology of meditation, to better reflect on thine powers.
At the same time I realize that the powers that be must test to Spanish people, to decide if we are truely worthy. But our first test is truely harsh, and we see the Gods shall NOT allow us to sit back and contemplate their might and power. For early on, we have found the most vial devil of the world.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0001.jpg
A demon from the abyss of hell, no good shall come from this monster. Not bad enough do the gods leave this savage in the world BUT drop him right at our doorstop.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0002.jpg
Oh mighty Gods, give I, Isabella Oh mighty servent of the Gods, the power and knowledge to understand thyne purposes and protect the Nobel and glorious Spanish people.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0003.jpg
Oh mighty Gods!!!!!! I tremble on the ground and on my knees () at such poweful knowledge. Oh glory, oh power, we quickly adopt our people to this great knowledge!
But we are sorely tested, with no additional help from the native huts, we find ourselves with no treasury and a close and the devil at our doorstop. We also find out that The grand Hindu religion has been founded, and we MUST find out it's source so we can add it to the mighty Spanish lands!
We are not fools though, and see we need help against this vial demon. Thus we researched
Mining/Brownze Working/Ironworking next!
Surely the gods shalt give us the instrument of copper to destroy this demon
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0004.jpg
Of course, we are being tested. We send another noble group of settlers to establish a holy city of Barcelona. But to speed up our settling and take the prime location we were forced to subject the noble Spanish citizans to the distasteful, yet necessary civic of slavery
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0005.jpg
And as we settle our city of Barcelona we loof to see where the mighty God's have left our greatly needed iron!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyA0006.jpg
WHAT IS THIS!!!!!!!! YOU STUPID GODS, HAVE YOU NO BRAINS AND DO YOU NOT SEE THAT I NEED METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I fear I have let my emotions get the best of me. I shalt meditate for a bit and decide what is best to do.
I fear we must court the favors of the devil himself to survive this, and hopefully the demon can see the holy vision of the Buddha, and find peace is the true way (at least until we are stronger).
So we have much to research here. I, Mighty Isabella and servent of the Gods, must look to some economy here. The wheel and sailing are urgent, and perhaps we can find iron or copper in those northern islands. Well before the Zulu demon decides to show his true colors.
Amen!
semirami Mar 22, 2009, 09:36 AM But the gods gave you stone to fight the evil. You'll throw rocks on shakas head:lol:
Seriously the good news is that he doesnt have metals either. You need Sailing much more than the Wheel. You need to find metal, or at least settle the junk spot. The demon probably doesnt have IW yet, so you still have a shot to the lone source of iron.
Soirana Mar 22, 2009, 09:52 AM You could scout the islands with workboat... Definetely gods seems to want you be island hopper:):):)
What about escape galley?
Low Beau Mar 22, 2009, 10:18 AM [B][SIZE="6"]WHAT IS THIS!!!!!!!! YOU STUPID GODS, HAVE YOU NO BRAINS AND DO YOU NOT SEE THAT I NEED METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully you can get four early warriors to found Pantera the most metal of all.
Other than that maybe you can rely on horses to run over Shaka? Yeah the whole idea of not founding a religion, then not having any metals would have made this game a LOT harder.
the whole "trembling on her knees' part was classic too, lol. Loving the writing so far MS keep it up bro. :goodjob:
Lansky Mar 22, 2009, 10:23 AM Interesting to see you actually landed an early religion in the 5 reloads I did just to see if I could get one of the early ones I lost them all 5 times. Yes I know to work the highest currency tiles as well just unlucky or something I suppose.
madscientist Mar 22, 2009, 10:45 AM Interesting to see you actually landed an early religion in the 5 reloads I did just to see if I could get one of the early ones I lost them all 5 times. Yes I know to work the highest currency tiles as well just unlucky or something I suppose.
Interesting. It means I have likely one Zealot out there.
I just worked one of the seafood and researched Meditation. Perhaps you may call it lucky, I can it divine guidance!
Lansky Mar 22, 2009, 10:49 AM Haha
My divine guidance came in the form of a weapon to use against Shaka so I won't spit on the Spanish gods too much :D
Bleys Mar 22, 2009, 01:00 PM Cheating on Monarch?
Um, I guess so, yeah. I "cheat" all the time, actually. Since this isnt a competition or a multi-player game (for me), I will continue to do whatever I darn well please. Moved up to Emp and gave the Barbs their proper techs on turn 1, but moving Shaka does make this map completely different, which is why I am not doing any reports.
damnation Mar 22, 2009, 02:35 PM The Gods might have given you horses to ride your conquisadors to battle with! Excelent writing, Izzy needs zulu blood to sacrifice to the life-giving gods!
:backstab: :worship:
Bleys Mar 22, 2009, 02:49 PM Excelent writing!
I agree. I dont play all of mad's games, but I read most of them for the story, heh, its like a TV miniseries.
Whens the next 18 Civ Genghis Romp? Thats still my all-time fav!
huerfanista Mar 22, 2009, 02:55 PM It appears that Isabella has taken to speaking in tongues to communicate with the gods - either that, or she needs to build a holy shrine so she can afford to buy a spell checker.
I also think that AH might have been a more prudent tech to research after BW turned up bupkis. :p
bestje Mar 22, 2009, 04:04 PM I have to agree with huerfanista that I would have gone for AH, worst case it would have let you develop those cows.
It might still be worth a shot even if late for a rush as Shaka is also metaless at the moment
DMOC Mar 22, 2009, 08:28 PM Not if he beelines IW or if there is metal in that fog in his capital.
Matthew5117 Mar 22, 2009, 09:13 PM ^Uh... did you not see the update? He beelined to IW and found no iron, including in Shaka's land.
Killroyan Mar 23, 2009, 02:31 AM Archer rush Shaka. Now that would be a cool sight. :) :) :)
assass1n Mar 23, 2009, 02:38 AM Archers + Cats :)
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 07:48 AM I am locked into a small continent with Shaka having NO metals and the best suggestion is an archer/cat attack. :suicide:
Jabah Mar 23, 2009, 08:04 AM If Shaka is also without metal, then the situation is not that bad, but be sure to be first to cat, even if it is for defence only.
Checking for horse is now a top priority
edited after seeing he map : Iron on the toundra in the south, might be a good idea to get a city there before Shaka (also should check all the reachable land / islands)
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 08:11 AM If Shaka is also without metal, then the situation is not that bad, but be sure to be first to cat, even if it is for defence only.
Checking for horse is now a top priority
Shaka has access to that southern iron. HE simply does not have the tech yet, plus he may in fatc have horses.
I think a desperate situation here, so I think I will tech AH first and send a workboat off exploring the islands. I will swap to sailing if I find metal offshore. As suggested, I can at least get an off-shore city built as a haven and think about the religion thing once I am alive.
One point noone has mentioned yet which is my giggest concern. I have warriors while Agressive Shaka has archers. I have seen AIs successfully use an archer rush before on me! At this point though, I don't think I can get hunting/archery teched and enough archers build to hold off Shaka. Best to "Pray" :please: Shaka converts REAL Fast!
BornSlippy Mar 23, 2009, 09:56 AM Why don't you step down and leave the start of this RPC in Rusten or someone's hands, let him deal with Shaka, then step back up and do the rest of the game? :)
Matthew5117 Mar 23, 2009, 10:16 AM ^I don't agree with that at all. This is Mad's game and he shouldn't be given advice to give his game to someone else. Mad, you play the game.
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 10:28 AM Why don't you step down and leave the start of this RPC in Rusten or someone's hands, let him deal with Shaka, then step back up and do the rest of the game? :)
Nonesense! I can screw up my own RPC, And make it very entertaining! Perhaps short-lived, but certainly entertaining.
Bleys Mar 23, 2009, 10:55 AM Just going to throw this out there, but you could re-start with my edited WB file. Moving Shaka to another landmass makes it so you can actually play it full on in RPC mode, and concentrate on getting the Shrines instead of spending 1/3 of the game dealing with a very difficult neighbor on a small landmass. I am thoroughly enjoying it, I can focus solely on the RPC condition, for example one of my neighbors has a Shrine already, and I am buddying up to his Worst Enemy, so we can work together and I can get that Shrine.
Soirana Mar 23, 2009, 11:03 AM In such a case why not prepick opponents in advance and use map finder?

You may want to post the game in a spoiler, as there should be great interest.
Myself, I will play it out as it comes, resorting to "Divine Intervention" to move that iron from Shaka's turf to Spanish turf if need be. And while I was planning on getting as many religions as I could, the situation dictates military action and thus eventual military action to claim the Holy Cities! Worse case, I restart the RPC as I have done many times before (mostly due to Shaka I might add!).
semirami Mar 23, 2009, 12:16 PM One point noone has mentioned yet which is my giggest concern. I have warriors while Agressive Shaka has archers. - I don't think that A-rush is very likely on Monarch, so you are pretty safe for now.
- Shaka doesn't care much for religion. Just like you, he doesn't have enough room to expand, so he'll attack you very soon, once he has access to iron.
- I don't think that horses will help a lot. Chariots and even horse archers are dead meat vs Impis.
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 12:24 PM - I don't think that A-rush is very likely on Monarch, so you are pretty safe for now.

I agree on all points. So my options are
1) Find off shore iron/copper fast.
2) Run a settler off shore fast.
3) Tech AH very fast and pray for horses.
4) Station some warriors/archers in the south and continually pillage/war Shaka's iron.
5) Pray for "Divine Guidance" and worldbuild Isabella some iron!
The more I think of it, the more I like option 5. I have already lost 2 religions and probably more as old Shaka will certainly be slowing down the Spanish tech machine here.
UWHabs Mar 23, 2009, 12:29 PM I would resort to option 5 as a last resort. I'd try to see if you can find offshore iron or copper first. If not, then tech to archery/AH and get something better than a warrior at least for defense. Then perhaps if Shaka enters WHEOOHN, perhaps the Gods can open up and donate a mined copper resource to allow a few whipped axes.
Matthew5117 Mar 23, 2009, 12:40 PM Agreed with UWHabs. But also resort option 4 until Shaka settles near the iron.
JammerUno Mar 23, 2009, 01:15 PM You can also found a city on a hill somewhere between your core cities and his to lure in his axes/sword/impis. Archers in a hill city with some walls are hard to displace without cats. Without a promo, those archers are at 5.25 strength with a FS. If he does go for that city, you might be able to keep him a bay until feudalism.
P.S. Is there any way to rush a settler to the iron? If he doesn't have IW yet, it's an unlikely place to settle, so you might have some time yet.
Krill Mar 23, 2009, 01:35 PM Oracle Fued.
semirami Mar 23, 2009, 01:45 PM I vote for:
6. Remove the iron from the junk spot and play fair from this point.
Btw, Mad there are few unrevealed tiles close to his capital, are you sure, that they are empty?
budweiser Mar 23, 2009, 01:53 PM Don't WB. A re-roll would be better.
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 01:55 PM Btw, Mad there are few unrevealed tiles close to his capital, are you sure, that they are empty?
No I am not!
By the way, I am noted for NOT playing some RPCs fairly!!!:D
I like Krills idea though. Priesthood/Monarchy are what I need to get Fuedalism. I wish I had thought of that angle before I wasted time teching Ironworking.
Soirana Mar 23, 2009, 02:08 PM IIRc, grail was not "oh so easy" to get. You want seven so time get to work:lol:
Joshua368 Mar 23, 2009, 02:56 PM I also agree that I would prefer a reroll to world building. Maybe you will get horses or find some metal offshore.
fugazi Mar 23, 2009, 02:58 PM Simply wall up, culture spam and build of archers to secure your border with Shaka until you can make your own move. Let's not chicken out with WB or restarting! :)
Bleys Mar 23, 2009, 03:01 PM Just relocating Shaka makes it a good map for the RPC. This little island of ours isnt exactly loaded, but being non-isolation isolated makes a good atmosphere to go for at least 5 of 7. Having such a hyper AI with us on such a small landmass makes the RPC go off-script on Step 2, Found a Religion.
Joshua368 Mar 23, 2009, 03:07 PM To be fair, "survive against a crazed super AI with no defensive resources" is a bit more interesting than "found a bunch of religions and then capture a few more". :p
Killroyan Mar 23, 2009, 05:55 PM Oh come on! Everybody with me!!! ARCHER RUSH ARCHER RUSH ARCHER RUSH. You know, you like it, just do it. Or just simply pray for horses.
madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 06:10 PM Fickle Isabella and her Quest for the Seven Holy Grails: Of the start of the great Satanic wars!
Oh Mighty Buddhist God! Pray, tell me are there other more noble leaders to help defend such a defenseless and vulnerable maiden as thou servent Isabella is???
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0000.jpg
My goodness, this one looks more like satan than the devils spawn that inhabits out beautiful a glorious continent. But he has yet to find any spiritual guidance, the poor misled Arab.
But under the Mighty words of the Mighty Buddha that hast come into a dream upon thou humble servent. "Isabella, you must build the Oracle to find true knowledge, you shall NOT be disappointed".
There was more to the talk but that is of no concern, the Spanish people need a superior defense against the evil fiends known as the Zulu.
So it is decreed, that the Mighty and devout, humblest and most holy Spanish people shall ponder the wonders of
Priesthood!
Yes, Yes. The god's have told us that this shall lead to a mighty defensive knowledge, but the people also have need of a nobel Queen, thus we shalt research
Monarchy!
Next.
Meanwhile, we built a workboat so the humble Spanish sailors may perform her majesty's holy quest to search for metal that the god's conveniently omitted from the Spanish lands.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0001.jpg
Yes, the Arab is directly to our north!
And as we cruise arround such an immense island to our north, we find
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0002.jpg
COPPER!!!!!!!! SETTLE IT, SETTLE IT.
But the dream that the STUPID, er I mean benevolent gods guided us away from sailing, so it is a distant target at the moment.
And while research of the technology to grant the Spanish the Mighty Queen that they so much deserve, yet built the Holy Wonder of the Oracle to communicate to the most Holy God's, I, Queen Isabella oh Mighty Servent of the God's arranged our cities to research
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0003.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0004.jpg
Trying so gallently to coordinate the Coronation of the Holy Queen of Spain with construction of the Mighty tool of the gods.
And yet the God's do us great Favor even more, in speeding along our research.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0005.jpg
And with only the speed of a single strike from the Stronge and Manly Blacksmith's Powerful Hammer, we tech
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0006.jpg
Soon, Soon we may be able to defend ourselves from teh most evil and dirty Zulu Demon.
And after constructing the Mighty Oracle, mouthpiece to the God's ()
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0007.jpg
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!!!!!!!! ARE YOU A BUNCH OF FREAKIN' MORONS OR SOMETHING!!!! WHY, WHY, WHY WAS I NOT TOLD WE NEED WRITING TO OPEN UP FUEDALISM!!
But, the Gods are truely merciful and watchout for the Spanish people (as well as NOT willing to listen to the Spanish Dame's tirade that mush), we are blessed with teh gift of time reversal!
Yes we traveled back in time, before the Oracle was built and had these Questionably intelligent Spanish genius' research writing BEFORE finishing the damned, I mean glorious mouth piece of the God's.
All the while giving these Zulu demons the power of swords
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0009.jpg
But the God's have NOT abandonnned us, allowing us time to finish
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0011.jpg
Giving us the option of
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0010.jpg
But the God's yet do not make things easy for the Noble spanish people. We still need to research
Hunting and Archery!
And as we finish researching archery, the devil comes due.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0012.jpg
But oh Mighty Gods, we are spiritual and quickly adopt Vassalage and slavery, the sacrifice many valient Spanish citizan's to teh defense of their most Mighty and Holy Queen.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0013.jpg
Yes, I mighty Isabella, Glorious leader of the Spanish people, most beloved of the God's has a mighty defender of the faith. Yet the swine Zulu quickly killed our Longbow and we relied on our early and longtime warrior for defense. They were in fact mighty defender and fought off the NASTY Zulu archers. Enough time where we could WHIP another Longbow while the capitals Longbow reinforcement came to Barcelno's aid!
With such a noble defense, and the fact that we do not need them anymore we send all our warriors out to pillage the Zulu lands.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0014.jpg
Our Mighty Warrior made it to the Hill gold and pillaged the vial Zulu mine before our warriors turned into Holy Martyrs.
But the Holy god's has blessed us with yet another fortunate event.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0015.jpg
How could we decide otherwise! We chose to settle the Great Prophet into our city, which also helped to speed production of teh next longbow defender.
The savage Zulu finally came to the degotiation table with this demand.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0016.jpg
THIS IS AN INSULT!!!!!!!
Rather than fume about it and err in our strategy, we opt to save save here.
A View of the land
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0017.jpg
And our two lone cities
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyB0018.jpg
So I mighty Isabella, defender of the Spanish people have decided to construct a Galley and settle ontop of the off-shore copper while defending off the insane Zulu demon. We plan to start pillaging with longbows, tech wheel, animal husbandry, and finally horseback riding as the vile Zulu is researching construction for catapults as we pursue horseback riding.
The Mighty Spanish Shalt persevere over the ignorant and brutual Zulu demons. None shall be left standing if we have to break every last Spanish citizan!
Amen!
CHEESE! Mar 23, 2009, 06:15 PM Oh whew, I wanted to tell you this on the Asoka game. THERE IS NO BUDDHIST GOD.

madscientist Mar 23, 2009, 09:07 PM Seconded :) Would be easier said than done of course...

Haha - i probably would have done the same thing. Entertaining read so far, keep it up and good luck. Just remember, the harder and more painful it is for you to play the more fun it is for us to read about it. So if you can stomach it, even if you take the last holy city in 2049 keep at it - should be fun.
Lansky Mar 23, 2009, 09:51 PM Interesting how a different style of something as basic as exploring is making your game so vastly different from mine. The gods really are testing the Spaniard's faith here.
I-imp Mar 23, 2009, 11:03 PM Way to bumble that "Buddhist god." Teachings of Buddha, teachings!
Accuracy aside, what you need to do is take control of key locations and just wreck Shakan's economy. Complete pillage! Make him be in the stonage! (Tho only problem, of course, is having units without defensive bonusus, however.)
Killroyan Mar 24, 2009, 03:16 AM Yes, we have longbows now. Game over Shaka!!!! All together again, archer rush archer rush ARCHER RUSH!!!!
madscientist Mar 24, 2009, 06:54 AM It's a very interesting game to play out. Longbows yet I have no worker techs except for mining!
So seriously, I need a strategy to subdue this Moron. Longbows are great defenders, but they are expensive and do not match up against Shaka's Swordsmen even if I am getting 2 promotions from the Vassalage trait. Also Shaka is beelining construction at the moment.
So my plan.
1) Barcelona keeps spamming Longbows while I get a Galley/settler in Madrid to nad the off-shore copper. Come to think of it, I should have my workboat right near it to deter Barbs.
2) See if I can send some Woodsmen II Longbows down towards the iron site before they get killed.
3) USe a force of axes and Longbows to take out the Zulu cities one by one.
4) Tech the wheel, AH, HBR and use those HAs to offset Shaka's eventual catapults.
I also plan to stay at 3 cities until Shaka is dead (yes the god's have told Isabella the devil must be purged).
A settled Prophet and a future shrine plus essentially limitless happiness shoudl fuel alot more military than Shaka if I can build them in time!
Soirana Mar 24, 2009, 07:00 AM 4) has an issue of requiring horses. You sure Budha has no more anger upon you for calling him god?
Belisar Mar 24, 2009, 03:08 PM Your "Masonry slingshot" made my day

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0000.jpg
One with a large Nose and rather flamboyant attire! He must also be a hammer of the Gods as he declared war on the Satanic looking Judaist Saladin as soon as we met him who also happens to be Judaist. Interesting religion there, I think the Spacish would do very well with it!
But we must not get ahead of ourselves as the Devil Zulu continued to break his armies against our city of Barcelona. But fear not, your glorious Queen of the Spanish People and humble servent, oh the hell with this!
JUST WHO THE DEVIL DOES BUDDHA THINK HE IS. A MANIAC AT OUR DOOR, NO COPPER, NO IRON AND AFTER WE RESEARCH ANIMAL HUSBANDRY...
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0001.jpg
HELLO! YOU PEOPLE ARE IN NEED OF A LITTLE ASSISTANCE HERE> WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO GIVE US A GODDAMMED PACKHORSE OR SOMETHING!!!!!!!!
Now where were we? Yes the Mighty Spanish chose a wise research path
Wheel/Animal Husbandry/Agriculture/Pottery/Math/Construction/ start Currency.
Yes Buddha must be listening and is working through some soldier servent.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0002.jpg
Why of course we take peace! Perhaps the stupid Zulu can see some common sense and become friendly as we both worship the same inept God.
As declared in teh last segment, I Isabella oh mighty servent of the gentle Buddha decided to settle on that very very far away copper resource.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0003.jpg
Which apprently the evil Zulu was not happy with
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0004.jpg
The Spanish wrath is tremendous here, and we send a Galley with 2 longbows to that southern Horse city to pillage it.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0005.jpg
We managed to pillage the road before losing the longbows but we blockaded the port, for a long time.
And as the Vile Zulu forces attack us, heathen Barbarians are ready to attack us!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0006.jpg
Curse the Buddha, do we have no help!!!!!!!

I Isabella, do devoutly adore the generous and benevolent Buddha! How could I doubt, and at least our economy is not a concern although our military is.
So as we brace to face this new assault while repeling the NASTY Zulu and try to build a force of axes and spears!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0009.jpg
The Mighty Spanish with teh assistance of the Mighty Buddha have successfully repelled the invading Swordsmen horde with but a single Longbow defender!
In additona, another force of Zulu warriors destroy themselves upon Barcelona resulting in
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0010.jpg
The wise and charming Warlord shalt have a seat at the right hand of the Spanish Queen!
But now the time has come to do the Holy work of the Buddha and start ridding the world of this Zulu trash.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0012.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0013.jpg
The Devil now only requests his former city for peace, BUT WE ARE NOT FINISHED HERE YET!
And while we are busy making the Zulu suffer attonement for defiling the Buddha, we must keep watch of our other Judaist neighbors.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0014.jpg
Still not doing bad here, and it is relatively early yet!
And after fighting off some annoying counter-attacking Zulu, we approach the capital....
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0016.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0017.jpg
NOW, let's see if the Zulu dog still talks big.
Yes Shaka, we shall take peace for a little bit. But there is much, much more to come very very soon. You have only just started to still Isabella's Spaniard BLOOD! The Spanish INquisition shall be starting very soon and you are the guest of honor!.

The Spanish do have a large advantage in Production
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0021.jpg
Yet we still lag behind in power to the dredded Zulu
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyC0022.jpg

UWHabs Mar 25, 2009, 07:58 PM Isn't that better than worldbuildering in an advantage?
Matthew5117 Mar 25, 2009, 08:23 PM I do not mean to criticize you and when I say, I truly appreciate your RPCs, I mean it.
However, if I fail a first grade test because I misspelled the as teh, I'll blame you. :p
Anyways, after that little remark:
Nice way to make a comeback. Too bad the land your fighting for sucks (you sure those are all the resources?!?!).
Post the Zulu war, I'm looking at beelining Liberalism for Military Tradition (I'm not sure if this is possible or is even agreed with, but it would be cool to see) and declare war on one of the infidels (maybe Louis???) with 5+ exp trebuchets and Conquistadors.
DMOC Mar 25, 2009, 09:17 PM ^Uh... did you not see the update? He beelined to IW and found no iron, including in Shaka's land.
There was fog in Shaka's capital, so I didn't know if there was iron there or not.
I-imp Mar 25, 2009, 09:36 PM Wow. Looking at the map, I realize one thing.
All the land sucks.
Seriously! It looks like 1/2 of Shaka's remaining land is tundra! Then that upper-right corner is mostly desert! There had BETTER be some kind of late ga me resource there.
Matthew5117 Mar 25, 2009, 09:52 PM There was fog in Shaka's capital, so I didn't know if there was iron there or not.
Ah, that makes sense.
Forgot you have Feudalism Mad. Can you vassal Shaka? It wouldn't be any loss considering his land sucks. Besides, he would help tremendously in wars.
Edit: Checked diplomacy window. Why isn't vassal an option?
toug Mar 25, 2009, 10:03 PM you been reading jeffK?

Killroyan Mar 26, 2009, 03:07 AM I am glad to see that I actually got a little archer rush (pillaging the horses) :) Great comeback. When I see the city placement I always flinch. The first zulu city with the unspeakable name would have been golden with 1 tile west. But no, the AI plunks it 1 tile of the coast and not being able to work the sea food.
About Shaka: Take that you friendly religious backstabber!!!
Keep it up. This one is great. Feudalism slingshot with timewarp etc....
Whitedragon Mar 26, 2009, 10:05 AM "No one suspects the Spanish Inquisition"

As for my 2 cents: Vassel Shaka as soon as possible...Then go after that French Holy City.
I shall now return to lurker mode for the next several months.

But be warned about that heathen Arab leader close to your lone copper source.
These insidious sparkling eyes are not to be trusted.

I don't think so because...
So Queen Isabella will spam out more and more military using our economic advantage and pruge these lands of the Zulu menace.

The Cities
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyD0017.jpg
And the Techs
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyD0018.jpg
Since Isabella is a little preoccupied () I have stepped in to diiscuss some strategy.
I think we should get a stronge economic footing and perhaps ship alot of those well promoted troops towards our copper city.
I also think it's LONG oversue to scout out the "neighboring" Judaist lands!
As far as tech, well we have some interesting choices. Do we opt for teh traditional liberalism beeline and try to force out a Great Scientist. Or head towards engineering for the UB.
Also we should be getting a Prophet soon. Do we save him for another shrine, and yes we need some Holy cities here. While fascinating (and am I ever surprised and pleased) fighting off Shaka like that with only a Fuedalism Bulb, catapults, and a very tentative off shore copper resource is NOT the purpose of the RPC (but is sure was fun!).
UWHabs Mar 26, 2009, 07:19 PM Save the prophet for a shrine, unless if you can bulb theology from him, then go for it!. More religions.
Being spanish, I foresee the next invasion with super-Trebs, so I say tech towards that. I see the French have invaded your island as well, so perhaps it could be time soon to expel them.
dalamb Mar 26, 2009, 08:19 PM Citadels, by all means. Barrage III cats out of the box (barracks, vassalage/theocracy, and citadels) are wonderful, as I've been discovering running Isabella on Earth 18.
Krill Mar 26, 2009, 10:27 PM Me thinks some medi, island hopping warfare is in order...bye bye Louis :) Take the Jewish Holy city for the Shrine, then reconsider your position? Taking out the holy cities and vassaling the civs afterwards does kinda fit with the RPC aspect, and the holy cities can help make up for not building right now.
CHEESE! Mar 27, 2009, 02:07 AM Oh Glorious Buddhist God, how you have helped the majestic Spanish people
Stop this Mad before I have seizures.
Killroyan Mar 27, 2009, 04:24 AM Great prophet = use for shrine for sure. You need to focus on the Priest economy anyway if you want all holy cities and shrines.
Research = engineering for citadels. Come on, we need big bad trebuchets :) :)
Land = settle the two northers cities asap. So the one to the NW with rice and the NE with cows/gold if I am not mistaken.
Overall = Good riddance Shaka. Mwuhahahahahahaha, incredible how you did it. Loved it.

madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 06:40 AM Mad, Buddhism is a way of life. It doesn't have a god. Maybe a nice idea to involve it in your next update.
Regarding the religion question.
My personal history! I was born and raised in the town of Flushing in New York City as a Catholic and attended catholic grammer school, High school , and college. The neighborhood is one of the most culturely and religiously diverse areas in the entire US, and is the home of one of the oldests chusrches in the US as well as the first place in North America where a doctrine for religious freedom was passed in order to protect Quakers from pursecution . I played with and grew up with kids who were christian, jewish, muslim, buddhist, hindu, and some others I do not recall. Within 10 blocks of my house there was a major Catholic Parish, a Jewish Temple, 2 Hindu Temples, a Muslim Mosque, and a Buddhist temple. Also, while I got a good dose of christian education my schools also taught us extensively about other religions to give us a general overview. Also I work in a field that brings me into contact with many people from arround the world and I currently work with Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Taoists, atheists, and agnostics.
Further, my brother served the US in Vietnam during the high point of the war and returned a Buddhist. HE told me during harsh fighting where there was screaming, blood, and fire there was this bald headed man in orange/red robes just smiling at him without any hatred, just smiling and at peace. He said we wanted what that guy has. By the way, my brother is also an atheist like myself, but considers himself a buddhist. Also my wife and 2 daughters are Methodist (Christian), which I helped raise them in, so I have no problems with organized religion at all!
NOW, with all that said!!!!
I am well aware that Isabella is in fact worshipping and cursing the Buddha who is in fact NOT a god but a man who found enlightenment and died at peace many years ago (in our time and RPC Isabella's). Consider it ISabella's misdirected Zealotship!
Also, Isabella has a great interest in the Jewish religion, something about the Circumcision process she finds VERY appealing!

Why didn't you raze Nobamba (final zulu city) and found a new city 1N? The new city would still have the iron in the BFC but it would gain fresh water and lose two ice tiles in the BFC.
Maybe it was the rush from smashing the last remnants of the Zulu dog?
madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 08:56 AM I wanted immediate access to teh iron in case the Judaist started making trouble. Still you make a good point, there was a littel Zealotish fanaticism at the end there!
Mayor West Mar 27, 2009, 09:32 AM My personal history! I was born and raised in the town of Flushing in New York City as a Catholic and attended catholic grammer school, High school , and college. The neighborhood is one of the most culturely and religiously diverse areas in the entire US, and is the home of one of the oldests chusrches in the US as well as the first place in North America where a doctrine for religious freedom was passed in order to protect Quakers from pursecution.

Man, with all those +1's and the 50% modifier from the mosque, it'll go legendary in no time! It'll be a tight race, since Canada will probably launch its ship in the next five turns on Immortal. You may want to flip from OR to FR for the happiness and research bonus. :)
Nice play with the longbows, by the way... I lurk in these RPCs a lot, and am constantly humbled at the wins you can pull off from situations where I'd be back on the custom game start screen.
Kev Mar 27, 2009, 09:48 AM Let's not forget that you will have to switch religions once you discover/take the holy cities.
It would be interesting to use the prophet to bulb Theology and hope that it makes you the Christianity founder. Switch to Christianity (required in the rules) and try to build/chop the AP quickly. Then, once you take the Jewish Holy city you will switch to Judaism and you will at least have a shared religion with some of the current locals.
Allows you to have the AP under a religion that you can control. Timing of the Holy Cities can make a big difference it would seem.
Krill Mar 27, 2009, 09:51 AM Louis can tech DR, therefore Theology has already fallen...

Barrage III cats out of the box
Er... since citadels are enabled by engineering, and engineering enables treb, I'd suggest (and you probably meant) barrage III TREBS.
@Mad
I'm in awe!!! :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::clap::hatsoff::woohoo: :beer::band::banana::high5::trophy:
I'd say use the prophet to bulb theo, try to get a GS next to bulb phil, and that'll be 2 more religions, plus the AP. Phil enables AW, which is hands-down the best GProphet producing wonder in the game, so you'll be able to found multiple shrines later. To run a great religious econ you really want AW, AP, and SM for the holy trio of wonders that gives bonuses of :hammers: :commerce: and :science:
Kev Mar 27, 2009, 09:58 AM Louis can tech DR, therefore Theology has already fallen...
Dang. Best laid plans....
If there might be any hope to get the AP, then there still might be the possibility of bulbing Theo, start the AP, go and take the Christian (or Confucian or Taoist if that has been founded) Holy City, switch to that religion, finish the AP, then take the Jewish Holy City.
Perhaps that's too much trouble.
dalamb Mar 27, 2009, 10:35 AM Er... since citadels are enabled by engineering, and engineering enables treb, I'd suggest (and you probably meant) barrage III TREBS.
No, I meant suicide cats, which IIRC are cheaper than trebs. You only need a relatively small number of trebs with Accuracy to reduce city defences to 0, but the cats keep getting killed off.
Matthew5117 Mar 27, 2009, 10:45 AM ^Trebs have +100% when attacking cities... so instead of a strength 4 for trebs and strength 5 for cats, its 8 for trebs and cats remain the same. I think its worth to get trebs rather than cats.
madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 10:58 AM Christianity and Taoism have been founded already, and I think Lou has at least founded Christianity. Either way, Sal, GW and Lou have to die I am afraid and without any vassalage!
As far as cats versus trebs, I plan to mix them up with cats getting barage III and trebs CR III. Also Madrid can make 16 XP seige weapons with a citadel and theocracy because of the 2 setted GGs. That means they will get an instant promotion if they survive battle thus helping to get another GG AND help healing.
madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 11:00 AM ^Trebs have +100% when attacking cities... so instead of a strength 4 for trebs and strength 5 for cats, its 8 for trebs and cats remain the same. I think its worth to get trebs rather than cats.
Not exactly. It's -100% for the defender. So it's 4 stength trebs against 3 strength longbows.
Ormur Mar 27, 2009, 11:06 AM Don't vassalise anyone untill all the religions have been founded. You don't want you vassal to found.
Matthew5117 Mar 27, 2009, 11:40 AM Not exactly. It's -100% for the defender. So it's 4 stength trebs against 3 strength longbows.
Whoops. I guess its a good thing though, the longbows will have more to lose than what the trebs could gain.
Wait a second... -100% equals 0 no matter what. Ummm... that would mean you would always win a battle.
dalamb Mar 27, 2009, 11:41 AM oops- bogus posting; sorry

 I didn't code the game...
UWHabs Mar 27, 2009, 02:36 PM  I didn't code the game...
Yeah, it's confusing. Basically think of it as:
If the total modifiers favours the defenders, give that to the defender.
ie. trebuchet with CR1 attacking longbow with CG? fortified in city with 100% cultural defenses. Attacker is +120%, defender is +175% (I always forget the longbow bonuses, but take this for argument's sake). Then take the difference and give that to the longbow. So the longbow gets +55% in this case.
If the totals favours the attacker, then act like it's given to the attacker.
ie. Trebuchet with CR1 attacking longbow with 0% cultural defenses. Attacker is +120%, take the defender as +75%. Then this will act like the Treb is getting +45%. Except it gets given to the defense. So instead of 4 * 1.45 vs 6, it's 4 vs 6/1.45.
semirami Mar 27, 2009, 02:36 PM Wow awesome game. A good example how a single wonder can be the difference between game won and game lost.
I think Sal should be next in the list. Isabella doesn't tolerate other zealots. She's the only one!!!
Btw, Sal keeps poping in every game. I think you have him in more than half RPCs.
Matthew5117 Mar 27, 2009, 03:25 PM Yeah, it's confusing. Basically think of it as:

So the multiplier always goes to the defender, its just a matter of is it adding strength (to do so, you'd multiply the multiplier) or subtracting strength (to do so, you'd divide the multiplier). Is that correct? Either way, thanks for the help.
 I didn't code the game...
 Yep, thanks, that helps a lot. :sarcasm:
You still deserve a thank you! :goodjob:
Anyways, Mad, build up your economy and attack an infidel, like any game. :p

madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 06:29 PM Fickle Isabella and her Quest for the Seven Holy Grails: Minor battles and the prelude to WAR!
As Isabella is busy running the Inquisition, I have taken over narating the next segment.
We mind our business allowing Isabella to kill Shaka while we rebuild the economy.
Then
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0000.jpg
Common Arab man, let me show you what the Panish people are all about.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0001.jpg
Perhaps not so useful, but for every city that's numerous trade routes and good for beakers!
Sal accepts peace pretty fast
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0002.jpg
Allowing us to resume building the economy.
Techpath this segement went: Compass/Machinery/Literature/Engineering/Most of Guilds. That's right, Isabella is forgoing the standard Liberalism path for a mideival war machine.
we did manage to explore a little more of the north just prior to the Arabian skirmish
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0003.jpg
Old GW has adopted our religion and has turned into a good friend. Too bad he is at Lou's beck and call. Nevertheless we made some good trades with him.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0004.jpg
And Lou was willing to make some trades
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0005.jpg
Just before he attacked Sal, giving us more time to build. I must say I spammed alot of military here, typical foran isabella game!
The map was pretty valuable, giving us a view of Lou's lands
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0007.jpg
OK, Lou has founded Judaism, Theology, and Islam. Late religions so I saved our lone prophet for a potential shrine.
We then got the horseshoe random event
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0008.jpg
Nabbing us Free Flanking I on mounted units. Too bad all my HAs I already gave flanking I and II to. One day I shall learn NOT to give out promotion until I need to.
The AP gets built by Lou
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0009.jpg
Who get's control of it.
We finally tech off
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0010.jpg
And we built Citadels for theg extra trade route and the massive treb promotion.
Tech does not look so bad, so we open a trade with GW since his overlord Lou has it already
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0012.jpg
We then met the first AI to Optics.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0013.jpg
The Hindu founder! OK, one of the tamest AIs we can meet.
At this point Lou does what Lou does best, be a jerk
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0014.jpg
OK, so we opted for this trade with Wang
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0015.jpg
Revealing
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0016.jpg
Looks like one of the Chinese and one of the Celts. Let's hope it's Brennus for some intercontinental stability.
So back to Lou, We pounced on that French city on teh Spanish continent.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0017.jpg
Packed up our well promoted troops into a Galley armada and went after the next closest French Island city.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0018.jpg
And
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0019.jpg
Lou became alot more humble after that fiasco.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0020.jpg
To Be Continued
madscientist Mar 27, 2009, 06:37 PM Fickle Isabella and her Quest for the Seven Holy Grails: Minor Battels and the Prelude to War!
Lou then tried to recapture a city via the AP
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0021.jpg
we defied and incured the dredded firnd penalty. However, as I understand it's only in the cities with that religion!
So I decided to start leveraging the UB and assemble an assault force for Sal
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0022.jpg
My goal is to claim this entire continent from Sal, giving us a great launching pad to attack both Sal and Lou and perhaps spin off a colony, something I have only done in the Joaoa RPC.
Techs are becoming a bottemless pit here, but superior number of cities and an agressive military game here should help us out.
Sal's core lands really stink
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyE0024.jpg
So I think I will leave them for now, because I am planning on hitting Lou's core next and I am building a force in the spanish Cores of Maces/Treb/Knights to attack Lou.
Matthew5117 Mar 27, 2009, 06:47 PM Like the plan. Note Saladin is stronger than Louis though. So it should be fairly easy to beat Louis if you can beat Saladin (which you likely can).
dalamb Mar 27, 2009, 07:12 PM When you made peace with Saladin and later with Louis, did you take the trade they offered or did you try to extort more? I haven't been in this position often, but sometimes I've found a desperate AI will give you lots more than they suggested, such as several techs.
Stewie0416 Mar 27, 2009, 07:13 PM Be careful. Protective LB are VERY VERY painful. But hopefully those Trebuchets are CR3!

The quick and dirty method is
1) Open the save and zoom in AMAP
2) Enter worldbuilder
3) Save teh game as a world builder file
4) Exit and load the WB save.
You can then select to speed and difficulty although it will also give you the choice of leaders.
There is a better method described before but I do not recall it.

madscientist Mar 29, 2009, 07:39 PM Fickle Isabella and her Quest for teh Seven Holy Grails: Spanish Expansion and Isabella's Fury at Galley's Impotence
I, Isabella, Humble servent of the Mighty God Buddha having returned from the long and slow execution of the Zulu savage has decided to further expand her majestic Spanish empire before we acquire some of these new religious thoughts from the Stupid French.
We start by assembling the noblest and most valient forces on our most important copper island
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0000.jpg
And decided to clear this island of the Arab trash.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0001.jpg
REPENT SAL< REPENT. FOR THE POWERS OF BUDDHA HAST COME TO YOUR CITIES AND DEMANDS BLOOD> YES, BUDDHA HAS COME TO ISABELLA IN A DREAM AND DEMANDS THIS ISLAND BE CLEANSED FOR THE SPANISH PEOPLE. CONQUISTADORS!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0002.jpg
YES, REPENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the Stupid French made trades with us, something we need to do as our tech adnavtage is falling, falling away. But fear not oh Spanish people, your fair queen knows how to lead and the world shalt tremple under the hoofs of our armies.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0003.jpg
Yes and also the Americans trade with us.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0004.jpg
AFter cleansing the Island and seeing another Ap vote for Arabian peace coming, I Isabella, of holy and subservant handmaiden to the Buddha, decide to obtain peace first.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0005.jpg
Sal does have a few interesting cities however, most sit in tundra lands, and we have enough from Shaka right now.
Our tech path this segment went: Guilds/Banking/Nationalism/Astronomy/start Gunpowder. And after Banking
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0006.jpg
Sing the praises of the Spanish people with Music, and feed the horses as both are needed for the Conquistadors the Buddha Spoke of!.
Upon obtaining the noble tech of optics we sailed across the lands, finding Qin and
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0007.jpg
Who gave us this trade
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0008.jpg
Yes, adopt Theocracy and use the true knowledge of the Buddha to exterminate the French. Yes now is the time to lead our Galleys against the French.....
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0009.jpg
YOU DIMWITTED, STUPID MORONS!!!!!!!!! WHY WAS I NOT INFORMED THAT THE FRENCH COULD NOT BE REACHED DIRECTLY. WE NEED TO PASS THROUGH SAL"D LAND AND HE AIN"T OPENING BORDERS>>>>>>>> ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, ISabella, get a hold of yourself. Obviously you need to take sharge here. Sal's lands are too useless and will result in the losses of our wonderful units. NO, we must research Astronomy first!
SO we adopt Mercantilism, Caste, and beeline astronomy. Yes, I Isabella, most intelligent and unmerciful shall show everyone how it is done.
Meanwhile, we try and obtain the friendship from overseas
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0012.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0013.jpg
Later we adopt Nationhood. And sure DR is deadend, but Isabella MUST have it.
Meanwhile, we popped a GM next
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0014.jpg
And send him off to the French lands via a caravel.
Techs are becoming a concern, especially with Lou claiming first to Liberalism.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0015.jpg
We land our GM for a 4500 gold trade mission.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0016.jpg
And upgrade our galleys to Galleons. NOW THAT"S TALKING!!!!!!!!!!!!
We saved there.
The map
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0017.jpg
And demographics.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyF0018.jpg
SO the plan........
1) Load up the Galleons and start attacking Lou from the southern region as he looks weakly defended there.
2) Stay in nationhood and draft Muskets as needed.
30 WAIT until I finish teching Gunpowder.
Next we tech Chemistry for frigates, then Military tradition for the UU.
Matthew5117 Mar 29, 2009, 07:50 PM Tough times, Mad. Tough times.
My only concern now is your tech rate, and it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal (especially since its monarch).
I-imp Mar 29, 2009, 09:59 PM Haha! Screw tech rate! We shall kill the heathen tanks with our spears!

Krill Mar 30, 2009, 04:00 AM If you take the cottages from the French, you'll jump to #1 (or close to) in beakers anyway; you can ignore the AP votes if need be until you take it from Louis' cold dead hands, just stick with the war until you have everything, then coast to victory.
Ormur Mar 30, 2009, 05:12 AM It'll be quite a bother switching religions three times while taking over the French lands.
Krill Mar 30, 2009, 05:27 AM Not when SPI :)
D_almighty Mar 30, 2009, 02:09 PM Some foresight right now is in order Mad; make sure you know what religion you want to be in by the end of the game so that you can take that holy city last. Theocracy doesn't look like it's going to be useful for this game what with so many religion changes, but organized religion should pay off nicely in spreading your new state religions around.
royal62184 Mar 30, 2009, 02:13 PM Do you have a plan in mind to generate the necessary prophets for all the holy cities. I noticed you just generated a GM which is going to make it harder to generate the GProp needed later.

Meanwhile, as I Isabella decide to get myself ready to appear before the Spanish people as the true Christian leader, we add another city to our collection!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyG0007.jpg

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyG0008.jpg
Now our troops move deeper into French lands
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyG0009.jpg
What mighty Seige engines we have, all due to the glory of so many Citadels. Truely a powerful UB!
And to gain a great Ally, we off this trade
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyG0010.jpg
Qin, your help shall not go unrewarded. I Isabella, glorious Christian leader promises to make your eventual dead moderately quick and not as painful as the vile Zulu.
And we send our holy troops past the obvious choice, deep into France

2 holy cities on a lone continent. Time to start thinking of subduing the Chinese and taking those 2 holy cities!
The question is when?????????
We definitely need some supporting Frigates and some of the UUs!
Also what techs are next????? Right now steel (CRIII cannons!!!!!!!!!!), but what next??? RP and rifling (cavalry instead of the UU) or democracy and SM/communism.
I think we shall be catching up in tech soon enough, but how long do we let Qin sit Arround??????
AMEN!
Matthew5117 Mar 30, 2009, 09:22 PM You do realize (if I am not mistaken that is) you are going to be facing Riflemen! Crank up the espionage slider to see how powerful you are against Qin. If you are above .8, build cannons and attack ASAP. If you below its going to be hard, I like hard though, so attack anyways! :p
UWHabs Mar 30, 2009, 09:26 PM Qin doesn't have riflemen yet, so you're still safe. Also note that you can build conquistadors until gunships become available (I learned this when I recently played a game as Izzy). I'd save go for Qin with the super-cannons, then regroup, maybe tech to artillery to upgrade all your cannons, and go for a final assault on Wang to grab that last holy city.
Loki Strikes Mar 30, 2009, 09:37 PM Errrrr mad, hate to be the one to tell you this, but you know those super cannons? your citadel got disabled when you traded with Sal for economics *ducks into a corner*

Ah, you're right. I though I didn't see Replaceable Parts in the "Can Research", and since Rifling didn't show up either, as a result of the Replaceable Parts not being researched and because of the misreading I assumed Qin had rifling.

well, gotta do something about that before going after the next Holy Cities on the list!
We cruised along pretty straight foreward until Communism, then adjusted civics
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyH0004.jpg
We also dropped our research to 0% to build enough of a treasury to upgrade all our CRIII Trebs to cannons, Knights/HAs to Conquisadors, and CR III Maces to rifles!!!!!

However, sal does leave us alone and is apparently happy to dismantle the remaining French lands.
Now Wang has joined in the Chinese bash-a-thon and landed a decent stack right next to the Confuscian Holy City, Oh Boy!
"GENERALS!!!!! WHERE IS MY HOLY CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!"
So we swamp the coastal Shanghai and send only Conquisadors very quickly toward the Confuscian holy city in the hopes of getting it before Wang!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyH0020.jpg
I must say the UU allowed us to take out maces fast and get the city just in time!
The generals go to the queen. "Oh grand, a new and better spread religion. How is the shrine income from it?"
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd118/MSguy_photo/Isabella/IssyH0021.jpg

And there you have it.
HOWEVER! We are missing one very important thing, OIL!!!!!!! There are only 2 sources for us and both are off-shore of the Chinese continent!
So to take out Wang who is likely VERY close to combustion and destroyers is extremely dangerous.
We do have access to Uranium outside of Bejing though.
So the question of tech path and victory conditions
1) AL/Electricity/IND/Plastics for off-shore oil
2) AL/Electricity/Fission for access to nuclear powered ships.
3) We also need RR/Combustion in addition to 1 and 2.
4) Wang. I say a very late game assault on him with modern weapons.
Victory???
Domination means I start taking out Sal, GW, and Lou now hoping they avoid Combustion
Space can be done, we only need to make a suicide run at the Hindu Holy City very late after the launch.
So what do you all think!
Krill Mar 31, 2009, 08:56 PM No oil in anyone elses' lands to take?
Matthew5117 Mar 31, 2009, 08:57 PM Domination! Rid Of All The Infidels!
Edit: This was all caps. What a major disappointment.
madscientist Mar 31, 2009, 09:41 PM No oil in anyone elses' lands to take?
Sal has an oil city just south of Shaka old Iron city. I can take that easily but I likely get the entire world ticked at us. Stiil, probably the best move.
Loki Strikes Mar 31, 2009, 09:45 PM Sal doesn't have rifles, and he does have a lot of land, and OIL, the only threat is Wang, he is a coward extraordinaire, I am sure you can keep him busy, if you take out Sal, you will have lots of land to max production with, OIL, reclaim the island you took from him before he AP raped you (surely Izzy won't stand for this), and likely be in a position that would be pretty hard to lose from :goodjob:
Krill Mar 31, 2009, 09:51 PM Take oil, kill everyone, win. Doesn't matter if you annoy anyone now, so long as you are in a position to not need to tech trade, they are all going to die anyway, maybe it's a little annoying, not as efficient from a tech PoV, to have to tech another few techs. But as your economy is probably strong enough to carry out a conquest win, and having oil would definately make the conquest easier to grab the hindi shrine, that might be the best way to go as you said.
OTOH, it might be more...interesting if you go for SS first and then see if you can blitzkrieg your way to the hindu shrine, only declaring war after the launch. That would probably work best with just marines and bombers pounding Korea from the old Chinese lands.
hey, whichever is the most fun for you :) I'll just enjoy reading it whatever route you take.

(Does your wife know grown men are calling you a queen on the Internet? :D)
Kev Apr 02, 2009, 09:49 AM Boy, this is great fun. Thanks as always Mad for the entertainment. Beats work any day.
Don't know if there is any time to cultivate Saladin for some tech assistance. I'd direct him to study Fascism at this point as he might actually be able to complete it. Otherwise might be able to make some nice trades with him, open borders, gift some stuff, etc. Don't know if you can get him to convert to your current religion, but it would be nice to get some techs from him while he's your vassal.
Looks like you already have a power advantage over Wang - but a protective AI with flight and assembly line can be a pain. If he gets mechs that would be a royal pain. And you might have to worry about Brennus jumping in on things. Still, if you gear for war now your production will so completely outshine his that I think it will be some quick taking.
Would it make sense to take GW's stuff and bring you closer to the domination threshold now? You might be able to get Wang to capitulate quickly once you take his core (including the Hindu Holy City), and perhaps that would then be enough for the victory.

madscientist Apr 03, 2009, 10:03 PM RPC Recap
Oh what a game! And what a posting! What an amazing beginning!
RPC Rules
1) Getting all religions were certainly done the more difficult way. Founding onbe, taking the rest.
2) The AIs were kind enough to build about half the shrines. What a great bunch of guys!
Why we won.
1) We got great advice to Oracle Fuedalism! That saved us without a doubt, as CG II Longbows took the starch out of old Shaka. NO horses, NO IRON, and late off-shore copper and yet we could eliminate Shaka.
2) Crushing Lou at astronomyand taking three shrined religions.
3) Making Sal REPENT!!!!!
4) Tech pace was very slow, we lagged behind ALOT. Still we trusted to our larger empire, still had the largest army, and eventually passed all the AIs!
Thanks to all for following this RPC! It was certainly alot of fun. I though Justinian would easily be the best of the Zealot RPCs, but perhaps Fickle Isabella may have passed even the great Justinian Crusades!
Next RPC: LAnd-Lubber Hannibal!

I had come back to read this thread just in the middle of the last update. I thought you were going to lose!
Krill Apr 03, 2009, 11:18 PM Nicely done. I think you did a great job of showing why Monarch isn't always a simple difficulty level with that start :) I look forward to your next RPC with pleasure now.
