View Full Version : Cool Models for REF

Checking Oleg's models today, I realised the "16th light cavalry regiment dragoon" and the "4th regiment of foot soldier" models are probably the best REF models at the moment.

Dale, I would suggest to replace the imperial musketman and dragoon with these two. Alternatively they could replace the blue musketman and dragoon, as they are far superior. Admittedly playing with them is addictive...

I am also attaching a screeny.

Nice! But would be better if the coat was player colour instead of fixed.

Easy fix. I've edited the original and checked how they did it.

All we need is set the main color transparent. I can do it for you, if you like.

Want me to have a go?

I think I can also replace the early australian flag with the union jack. Are you interested in that one?

Yup, it works. Graph attached. Pity cause the beautiful shadows on their jacket disappear. Rest are fine.

Orginal Oleg models look more beautiful though! ;)

Ever consider replacing the ordinary colonial army? Or what if the models get replaced on DoI? Shame if this puffy King has cooler looking army than ours. :D

Also added some "original orginal dragoons" to compare... Utterly sucky in my eyes. :scan:

PS If you guys like it, I can always do it more carefully. You may still see some red pixels. ;)
PS 2 How on earth do I position a regular in musketman mode, and a veteran soldier in dragoon mode with the WB?

That looks AWESOME! I'd love to get that into 1.09 if you want to go ahead with that. :)

These look really nice. Hats off to Oleg on his work, PrinzMyshkin for finding them and Dale for adding them.

Thank you guys! :D

If it's gonna be included in v1.09, I will have to sit and clean them very carefully. We don't want sloppy stuff in AoD II. ;)

I may check more models, while Kaib is editting my Europe screen.

Sloppy stuff is fine. Just look at the Australian leaderheads...

Dale
Mar 27, 2009, 06:59 AM
I'm hoping the Aussie leaderheads can be made 3D later. Would certainly finish off the Civ perfectly I think.

PiMan
Mar 27, 2009, 07:02 AM
I'll get to that eventually. That will be quite the learning curve, as I have never had to deal with 3D models with rigging before. If someone else wants to do it first, go ahead. Just know that it would only be for this mod, as I am developing all custom assets for my mod myself.

PrinzMyshkin

I suggest, the following:

1. Replace the Australian leaderheads with other already made.

Check in the DB there are plenty available.

2. Replace early Australian flag with the union jack.
The Imperial Australian flag should be replaced with the Crown.

I am happy to do both of these myself.

PS Also need to organise a bit some files.

eg.

The folders:

X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Leaderhea ds
X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Interface

Both contain the same file "btn_lh_england_victoria.dds"

Should move into: X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Interface \Leaderheads

Too many leaderhead folders makes it a pain to track!

Also the folder X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Units\swo rdsman

Seems no longer in use.

The folders:
X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Interface \TeamColor
X:\Colonization II\Mods\AgeOfDiscoveryII_1.08\Assets\Art\Civs\Russ ia

Both contain flags! Again makes it hard to track.

Let me know if you have any prob.

Saying this if we fix the imperial army, I also suggest:

1. They get a 50% settlement strength; same as veteran soldiers. Currently they have only a 25% settlement attack.

2. They get their combat values upped to 4 for Musketmen and 5 for Dragoons.

3. They get no terrain defensive bonuses, other than settlement defence 50%.

This is to reflect the lack of country knowledge of the Imperial Army. Also Europeans were not adapt to unorthodox war tactics, which happened in large scale in the American war of independence. In North America battle lines were simply impossible to manage in the dense woodlands, and largely pointless against the native tribes!

4. We create a new upgrade called "Colonial Army Elite". Veterans of Independence War can now gain improved combat stats though combat and also new model graphics.

Combat values upgraded to 4 for Musketmen and 5 for Dragoons.

This is to reflect the efforts George Washington to transform an unreliable and ill-disciplined army of peasants to a well-organised army.

Australia with union jack, as an early flag.

Interested in this one?

Credits should go to veBear, Younflancy, Petabyte and Liambane. Not sure who did what, so I mentioned them all. Better safe than sorry! :D

Best Australia in town! :D :D :D

Transparent models attached. :)

Let me know if you have any prob.

When I tried these out it looks like you have omitted one of the dds files for the dragoons. There should one dragoon dds and one horse dds, like in Oleg's version:

Veteran_Dragoon_DIFF256.dds
Vet_Dragoon_Horse_DIFF256.dds

I reckon these should be used for both the colonial and king's armies.

If you unzip the dragoon you will find two files inside...

Replace the imperial musketman and imperial dragoon to have updated files. Please make sure you backup your old files. :)

I know that there are two files, but one of them is the wrong file I think. You have two different versions of Vet_Dragoon_Horse_DIFF256.dds and no copy of Veteran_Dragoon_DIFF256.dds.

I've tried every combination of overwriting the Imperial files with your two files and it didn't work. Can you check you have the two correct files in there please?

A big thanks to Deliverator!

Please find attached the updated (and hopefully correct) transparent models.

No problem. Works great now - see attachment. :)

You can use them for both Veteran Musketman/Dragoon and Imperial Musketman/Dragoon, but the uniforms of your troops will be your faction colour rather than the blue of the default veterans. White v Red looks kind of cool, but ahistorical I guess.

PrinzMyshkin
Mar 30, 2009, 01:21 PM
Cool! Thanks :)

They are transparent to enable REF to use its own colour.

Use the original Oleg's models for your colony -which I have also attached here- looks far better. ;)

Since playing dark red vs red bothers me I had a scout around and I found that they is a nice model for Continental Infantry in the original Civ 4 American Revolution mod. Looks much better than the standard Veteran Soldier (although not up to the standard of Oleg's stuff). I like the way he occasionally gets out a nice cup of tea.

I've attached the files if you'd like to try it. You can just swap your current Veteran Soldier folder for the contents of this rar.

Need to find some better Veteran Dragoons...

PrinzMyshkin
Mar 30, 2009, 04:28 PM
Very interesting! I would also like to have different models for REF and continental army.

Let us know if you find any cool Dragoon. :)

Perhaps I can edit the hat and make it look even nicer! Do you like this golden line? Maybe I could also replace with another head as well...

PrinzMyshkin
Mar 30, 2009, 04:36 PM
Hmmm edited the file, this model has quite low resolution.

I also think it is shorter than average models, but could be wrong.

Wish we could find this one with improved resolution.

Dale what did you use for AoD I?

Deliverator
Mar 30, 2009, 05:01 PM
That's odd. There didn't seem to be a size issue when I tried it. I'm sure someone with some artistic talent could retexture it.

Deliverator
Mar 30, 2009, 05:25 PM
Perhaps with some recolouring, head swapping, etc some of these could be used.

I had a play around with your transparent versions and Oleg's original and it is possible to retain his nice shading and have the transparency so that you get team colour. You'll see in the attached image that these dragoons have team colour, but also have the shading so that they are less dayglo. I can do a better job on this when I have time.

I'm getting confused with all these version. :p

Just let me know when you're done, and what to include where, and I'll do it. :)

This is my final suggestion for REF. If there is an update it is going to be for a future version. :)

PS Deliverator, this doesn't mean I am not interested in what you found. :)

Deliverator, the bluecoat you posted is the original regular musketman model, in lower resolution and different background colour. :)

Do you think we can use it to paint the original?

Deliverator
Mar 31, 2009, 07:15 PM
Right I've been busy and I've made transparent and shaded versions of the REF units, but more excitingly I think I've made some rather nice Continental units for the Veteran Musketman and Veteran Dragoon. First the screenshots...

Deliverator

... and here are the files. To make it easy I have bundled up everything so that it can just be unzipped into your mod Assets/Art/Units directed and everything should work. Reskinning is quite fun when you get into it...

Awesome! Shall we keep this one, or transparent models for REF? :)

I like this more, because it has better shading.

Deliverator
Apr 01, 2009, 02:19 AM
Thanks. The reason I did the shaded and transparent versions for the REF/Imperial units is that I think there look more natural. The pure transparent ones with no shading look too bright in my opinion. So I reckon go with my set. :)

Playing with these new Veteran units versus the new REF gives the War of Independence a better feel of realism I think.

Deliverator

To be clear - I'm suggesting we use all four new models in the newVeteranAndREFUnits.rar posted above.
