Formaldehyde Apr 06, 2009, 01:10 PM I am outraged at this obvious protocol gaffe!
John Oliver warns that the rules for handling the queen are the same for handling a cobra.

no worries. business as usual. people with eagles and star striped banners are trying to bait people, Italian earthquake gets no coverage, justifying the throngs of people in US prisons (which are spas), etc etc.
come on... it is not like Obama bowed to a muslim! get your priorities straight.
PS: sheesh, no need to wonder at the state of the US two party system and their civil war a la media. I get riled up and I don't even live there.
scherbchen Apr 06, 2009, 06:23 PM Yeah, if you touch the queen you must move her.
my brother tried to enforce that rule... it just won't stand!
LucyDuke Apr 06, 2009, 06:45 PM Except it is quite a story over here.. You are not allowed to touch the queen! Made front page of almost every paper.
Why the hell not? Will she break? Do we have to buy her if we break her?
scherbchen Apr 06, 2009, 06:56 PM how the booger is this Humour and Jokes btw? every other perceived Obama gaffe is in OT.
and protocol or "we always did it that way" is not something that should be left standing and unchallenged. some would say that there are humans interacting in these situations *gasp*. while guidelines (read: protocol) are very helpful here there is no reason to not do what comes natural to you unless it is offensive to the person you do it to. provide me with a link to the Queen's blog where she disses MOB for not showing respect and we can talk.
ÜS: yes I suppose the OP was a joke. unfunny jokes travel to the OT to die :(
Catharsis Apr 07, 2009, 03:55 AM I like how Oliver, the cameo guest, was funny whereas Jon Stewart, as usual, delivered epic fail.
'Keep it down, three-eyes!' Surely five-eyes, Jon? :shake:
Gooblah Apr 08, 2009, 05:14 PM You fools, if you touch it, you buy it!
ParadigmShifter Apr 09, 2009, 02:48 AM America couldn't afford to buy our Queen in the current economic climate.

HM is not so rude as to offend someone by saying that she was offended. There are several reasons why you are not allowed to touch the queen:
1) Her Majesty has been Head of state for longer than Obama has been alive and it is not appropriate, in western culture, to touch your superiors. If you met the president, would you start hugging him?
2) Michelle had no reason (to my knowledge) to think HM wanted to be touched or be so friendly to her.
3) This happened in HM own residence and if she had wanted physical contact, she would have made the first move.
4) HM is appointed as Monarch by God and it is not appropriate for commoners to touch such a representative.

Um... Cromwell? James Ist? (simplistic, I know, but still...)
Brighteye Apr 12, 2009, 05:23 PM Touching people you've only just met is rather forward. Furthermore, she has a husband already. She must have annoyed him immensely by touching the Queen. And a meeting with a foreign head of state is not the time or place to play such games with one's husband.

While god was down on earth appointing the Queen to office, why did no one ask him to clear up a few debated issues? Or, you know, just get a picture of him? :mischief:
