View Full Version : Unique city art styles
Deon Apr 16, 2009, 05:41 PM Is anybody working at unique city art for factions?
Today I did a gayan home so I want to know is there anyone working at it to avoid cross-jobs.

No one is creating faction cityset graphics at the moment.

Not sure I understand. Is this a completely new model you made, or is it one of asio's models, with the encircled building added to it?
GeoModder Apr 17, 2009, 03:47 PM This is a completely new model as far as I can see, and I hope many more will follow. :goodjob:
Deon Apr 17, 2009, 07:27 PM Why do you think it's a Asio's model ? It's just a "hill" made from a cilinder with a quick handmade texture :).
[EDIT] Oh lol I see what you show me, no, it's just an extruded cilinder made by me within 5 seconds, and texture took a bit more (like 30 seconds :P). Moreover, the whole building uses the same texture so it's not ripped :).
The idea of the building is from this look:

Because asio made a gaian cityset (see attachment)
However like you made with a building on top doesn't exist yet. And there can never be enough varieties. If not for generic cityset art, then there's always room for faction-specific building art.
I'd suggest the building on top uses the same texture as the mushrooms on the side though. Currently it kinda looks like an out of place lighthouse to me. :-s
Deon Apr 18, 2009, 08:04 AM I agree, I said it's not finished.

But some exist already! Why didn't you use them? Also can you show me others which exist to avoid unnecessary work please?:)

They are being used.
Best way would be to have a look yourself by unpacking Planetfall's PAK file. Do you know how to do that? The cityset art is in the Art/Structures/Cities folder (and a little bit in the Structures/Buildings folder). Some of the dds files used for the citysets are in the Art/shared folder, for the record.
There is cityset art for all seven SMAC factions, and a little for the Caretakers and Usurpers. They're not all equally high quality though.

I am sure I started as gaians and got "bunkers" instead of these buildings in my city as pop grew...
Maniac Apr 18, 2009, 09:34 AM Did you play to the Expansion era? All factions start with the Arrival cityset art, but then when you research any level 3 tech, your faction switches to its unique art.

Gah! I've just started as gaians to look at their cityset. Sorry for the confusion :).
I usually play as Spartans because free combat I plays a nice role in the combat side of the mod.
GeoModder Apr 18, 2009, 10:17 AM In my (humble) opinion, The Peacekeeper, Hive -and University citysets in Planetfall are about as close to perfect as humanily possible. The Gaian cityset has its rough edges, the Spartan cityset is acceptable while the Morgan -and Believer citysets could use something new. ;)
Lord Neil May 10, 2009, 09:23 PM Just out of curiosity, which programs do you guys use for making these models? I always wanted to do some models for Civ but I never had any programs that would open dds files.
Also is polygon count a serious issue for the models? I could make much better detail models but I am not sure if it will make the game run too slowly or cause other problems.
Maniac May 11, 2009, 12:30 PM Not being a 3D modeller myself, I'm afraid I can't answer those questions. Perhaps you can ask in the main Creation & Customization forum?

There's no point to make much "better models" because they won't be visible anywhere but civilopedia, and with the Civ4 engine which cuts polygons down automatically, high-poly objects start to slow down pc a lot.
To make models you need any 3d modelling program with ability to export civilization nif files.
I use 3 methods:
1) Program "Blender" -> export with Niftools.
2) 3d studio Max -> export with nif import/export plugin, check tutorial forums.
3) Make simple shapes in Wings3d -> import them in NifSkope directly.
About DDS: google "photoshop DDS plugin", and you will be able to open DDS files with Photoshop.
