View Full Version : Buying techs

How much can one expect to be "charged" for a tech if trying to trade for it off of the AI? I don't feel like it's fair for me to go into too much detail about my game at the moment 'cause it's multiplayer and it should be my effort and not couching that gets me further, but I am debating the effectiveness of just shutting down research at a certain point and buying everything from there on out. I don't think I've ever bought a tech for just gold before, so I'm curious what I should expect to be charged per beaker. I expect things like monopolies and relationships would factor in. Does anyone know some rough numbers?

1 for 1 on Noble.

More on higher levels, less on lower levels.

Also, after buying 10 techs they won't sell you any more.

Wow, really? (Playing on Prince, so I'd expect it to be slightly worse.) So you actually get a better beaker to gold conversion than you do beaker to beaker by trading techs for techs? (I can never get the AI to accept a tech trade where he doesn't come out ahead total beakerwise.)

Due to the 20% per prereq bonus, i'd start negotiating at 5/6:gold: = 1:science:
Them having more :science: multipliers than you makes their beakers worth less, as more :gold: multipliers for you makes your gold worth less. Then there's the factors you brought up, "monopolies and relationships" which much could be added to (the immediacy of gunpowder now vs spending that gold to research it yourself).
This situation also leaves you totally dependent on them for tech and no matter what you can prove, ultimately things are always worth only what people will pay for them.

No, they'll always overcharge you on Prince tech trades no matter what the deal is.

Which is why you try to trade the tech to others for more value.

Also, if you get them to friendly you can buy as many as you want, OP. Not a highly recommended strategy regardless, however.

No limit on buying from a friendly civ? Is there any limit on how frequently you can do so (other than the gold)? I've got Shaka at friendly next door; the two of us share a continent, having divided up Mehmed's original empire. I've got Civil Service, he's got Machinery. I'm trying to steal it, not trade for it, but I'm getting close either way since I'm running my sliders at 0 beakers/10 or 20% espionage.

There's no way I'm giving him the tech he needs for Macemen, even if he's Friendly (+13).
