I have just completed a game and wanted to rant a bit. Despite launching my spaceship one turn before Brennus and despite the fact that we had exactly the same spaceship components, he arrived at alpha centauri ONE TURN before me!!!?? Is this right? Is that just an advantage the AI gets? I feel so ripped off! Anyway, rant off.

Did you build all the thrusters?

There was a similar thread about this where the AI somehow had the advantage

i ma very far from expert on launches but if in that screenshot is turn you launched, than message about Brennus launch means he launched before you. I mean on your turn you were told he launched on his previous turn.

Which leads to exact result he landed on his turn which was naturally before yours...

if you read "XX launched", you should start massing troops next to XX's capital ASAP.

No I launched the turn before Brennus and he gained a turn on me somehow. I had 18 turns to wait initially and you can see Brennus launching and i have 17 left. Our respective components are attached. I guess its just one of those things, but I thought I had that space race won.

My guess is it's a bug in BUG.

My guess is it's a bug in BUG.
I strongly doubt that, because the only code changes of BUG in that particular regard was the colors and the still avaliable SS parts to build.

So let me explain a thing in here:
-Civ is a turn based game
-Normally the human is player 0 ( expect in scenarios or said otherwise in costum game ), and as that, he plays before the AI. Barbs are always the last to play.
-This means that, when you see the warning that the AI done something, it usually means that the AI had done that in the previous turn (unless, OFC, if you're not player 0... but normally you are )
-This means that the AI shown in the pic attached in post #1 launched the SS ship before the human , in the turn before ( otherwise you would only see the SS launch in the next turn ) . As that, it has 1 turn in advance to the human.
-If the ship has the same number of thursters and engines than the human one, the AI ship will get there 1 turn earlier.... because it got out 1 turn first
-In fact, the AI is coded to not even bother launching a SS if it can't get there first than other SS already in the air.

I have a example posted in the Lonely Hearts Club games of me beating a AI in a SS launch in a situation similar to that, except than in my case the AI had launched the SS with one engine less than me. And there I beated it by 1 turn ;) In here, no way.....

All I can think of now is that we did then launch on the same turn, but it still seems strange. I guess its also like when you have 1 turn to building a wonder and the ai gets in first. My view of the timeline is as follows:

turn x. launch spaceship 18 turns to go
IBT brennus launches
turn y. 17 turns to victory see the graphic of brennus ship and get the message.
...
turn z one turn to victory, hit enter..
brennus wins.

Rolo is right.

Those messages at the beginning of the human player's turn set is a delayed report from the previous turn set of the AIs.

Cronos, maybe you should take a look at the event log screen.
As you can see in the picture below. Suleiman, has launched his spaceship at the same date, but from what I remember,
the spaceship missed some casings. At the winning date I got the message Suleiman's spaceship failed to reach alpha centauri.

Cronos, it was that exactly what happened. Remember always that in SP, when you see a warning of the AI doing something, it means that it already happened and it is not happening now ;)

I think I read someone on here recently said if 2 conditions were going to be triggered on the same turn, then they flip a coin for it?

So, you and Brennus were both set up to win on the same turn. Maybe they flipped a coin to see who got there first?

There are no ties of that kind in civ IV unless you're playing simultaneous turns.

It could be that. I do recall these threads before, and my experience in launching after the AI and beating them to Alpha Centauri because my ship was faster (more thrusters). It's rarely just a matter of launch dates, iirc. Now I've played so many Civ games in the various Civ versions, that I frequently mix up the details so I'll just say I wouldn't be surprised if a loss by one turn happens to me next week.

:nope: quite a surprise for me too, but look here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=314759) and here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=315138).
Hey, you posted in one of those threads :crazyeye: !?
