Maniac May 10, 2009, 08:40 AM can you help me i have downloaded planetfall and put it in the mod folder but im not sure how to run it any help? Have you double-clicked the executable to let it install? Is it something different than C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Planetfall v8 ? Tssha May 10, 2009, 09:24 AM Here's the troubleshooting checklist. Please answer as many questions as you can, and feel free to elaborate on any of them. The more information we can get here the faster we can help you. 1. Did you install the mod? 2. Did you install the mod to the correct directory? (it should know where to install it, even if you've got a funny directory setup...assuming your answer to 1. was "Yes") 3. Do you use Vista? 4. Do you have Beyond the Sword patched to 3.17? 5. Can you run Beyond the Sword? 6. Can you load the mod by going to Advanced -> Load a Mod in the Main Menu? I'm sorry to be so thorough, but you haven't provided a lot of information here. Please don't be offended, I don't know what level of mod experience you have with Civ, so I'm trying to cover as many bases as I can think of. kansa May 10, 2009, 09:28 AM i downloaded the mod im not sure how to install it i dont use vista i have the latest update yes and no Maniac May 10, 2009, 09:29 AM Thanks for that checklist! Will be useful for me in the future too. This though (it should know where to install it, even if you've got a funny directory setup...assuming your answer to 1. was "Yes") is not true for my installer. If the Civ4 directory is different than the default one I mentioned above, the user should browse for the correct folder themselves. Maniac May 10, 2009, 09:30 AM i downloaded the mod im not sure how to install it i dont use vista i have the latest update yes and no Double click on Planetfall_v8.exe kansa May 10, 2009, 04:25 PM I cant see the .exe file kansa May 11, 2009, 11:42 AM ok i have found the .exe file but it recognises it as a quicktime file Maniac May 11, 2009, 11:53 AM I'm afraid I don't know how that is possible. :( Err, do you use a Mac or something? kansa May 11, 2009, 12:35 PM no im not sure how it is possible either and no i do not use a mac Deon May 12, 2009, 05:57 AM Maniac I'm afraid I don't know how that is possible. It's possible. You can even try to open JPG files with notepad, it just makes no sense. Looks like that guy installed Quicktime wrong. Kansa: Install it the same way you've installed Beyond The Sword. Do you remember how you installed Beyond The Sword? If your windows thinks that .exe is a quicktime application, make it think that it's a program executable. If you don't know how to do it, you can ask it directly in Microsoft Help&Support section: http://support.microsoft.com/ Anyway, here's the "algorythm for dummies": 1) Download planetfall mod .exe file. 2) Run the executable. 3) When it asks for a program location, browse the location of your Civilization 4 folder if you have it installed not in the default location (I think it's not your case). 4) Let the install program make everything it needs. 5) Make sure your BTS version is 3.17. If so, run Beyond The Sword. 6) In the main menu, select "Advanced", then "Load a Mod". 7) In the opened window click a checkbox near Planetfall Mod and press "next" (or "load"/or "OK", I don't remember; that button in the lower right corner of your screen). kansa May 12, 2009, 01:18 PM sorry it didnt work I think i installed it to the right location and i do have the right version of beyond the sword it's just not working Maniac May 12, 2009, 01:44 PM Dude, if you just say "it's just not working", we can't help you, and I'm just gonna ignore you. You need to be more clear, provide more information. I'm always willing to help, but you have to make an effort too you know. I have better things to do than playing guessing games. So I assume you managed to get the executable working? At what point of Deon's algorithm for dummies did you get stuck? Deon May 12, 2009, 02:02 PM Dude, if you just say "it's just not working", we can't help you, and I'm just gonna ignore you. You need to be more clear, provide more information. I'm always willing to help, but you have to make an effort too you know. I have better things to do than playing guessing games. So I assume you managed to get the executable working? At what point of Deon's algorithm for dummies did you get stuck? Right, I gave you an algorythm with 7 points. At which point does it stop working? P.S. Just in case: by "point" I mean "number", not "dot". P.P.S. Man, it works. You just do somethign wrong. http://content.pyzam.com/funnypics/misc/DoingItWrong6.jpg Couldn't stand... coanda May 12, 2009, 05:44 PM No big deal for me, but you might want to know that your installer didn't even create the planetfall v8 folder for me. -I downloaded the main file and the patch from the links at the top of http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=253775 -I accidentally ran the patch installer first, but realized this as it was finishing -I then ran the main installer, followed by running the patch installer. The directory they suggested (and I accepted) was in both cases C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\Beyond the Sword\Mods -I started up the game, and was surprised when I could not launch the mod; on investigating I realized that even searching my entire civ4 folder for "planetfall" returned no results, much less finding a folder "C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Planetfall v8\" -I went ahead and created that folder myself, then tried the installer again; no dice. -I used 7zip to extract the files myself into the path above, then extract the patch files (overwriting when it prompted). I then was able to load the mod and it seems to work fine. -FfH2 also uses the NullSoft Install System v2.38, and FfH2 correctly installed for me. As I said, it isn't really a problem for me but I thought I'd let you know. For your information, I'm running Civ4 BtS 3.17 on XP. Amazing work by the way; I'm certainly impressed. Tssha May 13, 2009, 03:42 AM Looks like your install of Civ 4 isn't in the default directory. Mine isn't either, which is why I always have to manually set the directory when the installer doesn't detect it. I'm using steam, so my directory structure looks something like this. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods" Oh, I also use a 64 bit operating system, so instead of "Program Files" it's "Program Files (x86)". If you're using Vista or XP x64 edition, you're going to have to check the (x86) directory. Find your install of Civ 4 first. If you use a desktop or start menu shortcut, right click that shortcut and select properties. In the resulting menu, click Find Target. You'll probably see the directory structure at the top of the explorer menu. If not, then your system is configured to hide it by default (and if anyone thinks this is a good idea, identify yourselves now so you can be shot), but I won't look up how to change that setting unless you state that's the case. Copy the above address into the installer. If there is no address, you can go back to your desktop (or start menu) shortcut and copy that. Make sure to add Beyond the Sword\Mods to that though, or it won't be in the place it needs to be. Civ4 Complete also uses a slightly different directory structure. Again, sniff out what that is and then paste that into the installer. This installer only picks the default directory. It's not the optimal directory for the mod, just the one that's most commonly optimal. For those of us with different (and non-default) setups, we have to change it manually. Maniac May 13, 2009, 10:18 AM -I then ran the main installer, followed by running the patch installer. The directory they suggested (and I accepted) was in both cases C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\Beyond the Sword\Mods The suggested directory is: C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\Beyond the Sword\Mods without the 2K Games Is Civ4 with you installed at ...\2K Games\... then? Always useful to know the often occuring installation folders. In what form did you buy Civ4? kansa May 13, 2009, 10:44 AM Yay it's working thanks for all yourself i was not aware that civ complete has a different file destination than beyond the sword Maniac May 13, 2009, 10:50 AM What is Civ Complete's installation folder? I'd like to make a 'Launch Planetfall' link especially for Civ Complete. kansa May 13, 2009, 11:01 AM im not sure actually in the end i copied it across to there Tssha May 13, 2009, 11:07 AM Awesome, glad to hear you got it worked out. :goodjob: chemmatt Jun 14, 2009, 06:17 PM I am having problems loading the planetfall mod (or any other mod). All the file paths are correct in the program files and in my documents. So I thought that maybe my old install had too many corrupted dll files, so I uninstalled everything, and started from scratch. I reinstalled civ IV (I bought it when it first came out), and reinstalled BTS (also bought when it first came out). Then, I downloaded and installed the latest patch (3.19) through the game itself. Then, I installed Planetfallv10. I can get to the initial game screen, but after loading the mod, nothing happens. I also tried Rhyes and Fall for comparision, and it won't work either. I am running XP 32-bit Any help would be appreciated! Tssha Jun 14, 2009, 06:26 PM As far as I know, Planetfall isn't yet compatible with 3.19 (though it's on the way, rest assured). It WILL run with 3.17 though. Lord Tirian Jun 14, 2009, 06:28 PM Then, I downloaded and installed the latest patch (3.19) through the game itself. That's the problem - the 3.19 patch just came out a couple of days ago (last Monday/Tuesday or so). Most mods (incl. Planetfall) are not compatible yet, but the modders are working on it furiously, as far as I know! Give it a couple of days and you're going to be playing Planetfall. Cheers, LT. |
