It is common to go worker first. From there you can go worker -> settler (not recommended).

As an alternative, you can also go worker first, warriors to size 3, then go worker -> settler.

Finally you can go warriors or archers until size 5 and then go worker -> settler -> 2x worker -> settler...

DO not worry about the maintenance, moving your slider down somewhat is no issue. I am very ha;ppy to go down to 0% with negative income if I can grag some very good land. It is not recommended to do this unless you know what you are doing and you have techs to recover your economy ready to be researched or ready to be traded for.

It is hard to say what is best in general, but I am sure you can find countless examples of how to manage your rexxing so early in the game.

I think the problem is "how to manage my army?" is a very general question. You can read the war academy for general advise. I think in general the received wisdom is something like:

- you can rush someone very early by building lots of axemen and grabbing all his cities
- after this, it is usually best to wait until you have siege (construction -> catapults)
- bring lots of siege, around 50:50 siege:attack units. Bombard defenses on turn 1, suicide a number of catapults on turn 2 and attack

Good luck!

We can tell you all you want to know, but please understand that we all have stuff to do during the day or that users reading your thread may not feel like replying so sometimes it may take a while for you to get your answer.

Managing your military is one of the key points in Civ. Unlike you I do not enjoy waging war in Civ and I avoid it if I get the chance. There are many, many ways to wage war, so a general answer is very hard to give.

When it comes down to defenses there is one guideline that I try to use. Some civs are more aggressive than others. Shaka will attack as soon as he has an itch behind his left ear, ghandi will not attack if you set his mother on fire. I tend to keep partols on my borders so I get an idea of the attack force of my opponents. If I see 6 city raider swords, I get 8 axes just to be safe, etc.

Even more wise than massing defenses is playing your diplomacy right. Knowing who will attack and how to tell is the key. In th war academy on the front page you can read as much as you desire about both warmongering as diplomacy in general, the correct use of each and every unit, etc.

When it comes to attacking I would love to give you advice, but as I tend to avoid war I am by no means an expert so I think I leave that one to an expert on the subject.

The Japanese have the best traits for warmongering post-Gunpowder, in my opinion, but the game is often decided by that point anyway, from what I've experienced - and you'll be hurting from the lack of boosts to your economy while waiting to get there.

Samurai are useful, and used right are frighteningly powerful, but even if they did make up for the lack of economic boosts, they come so late relatively that you'll be feeling the pinch anyway.
