View Full Version : Demogame RPG Automation/Webpage Development Discussion Thread
Chieftess Sep 15, 2002, 08:46 PM Ok, I've been hearing things about databases and automated banking, and very little on the actual roleplaying front. This will serve as the main analysis thread for the Demogame RPG. I know Strider had a thread, but there's a difference. Strider's thread was a brainstorming thread, and this intends to refine it into an automated web-based system.
I will start off with the major topics (web and forum specific) that will help the RPG, and some additions. I will elaborate on this more as ideas come forward.
Economics Engine - This will serve as the one of the major backbones to the Demogame RPG. The Automation center, which will maintain the database, and adjust economic factors. :) This includes a base economy (setting the current total gold to something like game_gold*1,000,000).
Database - This is the user info, and what the user does in the Demogame RPG.
Real Estate - This is where tiles can be bought, and gpt will be earned based on the tile type.
Daily Life - This is semi-forum specific. In the Demogame Webpage, there will be links to improvements on the city-view screen. These "improvement links" will bring you to a RPG topic on that city.
For example: Bavaria builds a barracks. Someone can open a "Bavarian Barracks" thread, and post a link in the Bavaria City Thread (as an index). So, clicking on the barracks link in the city view would take you to the Bavarian Barracks Thread in the forums.
Anyone can list what they want and elaborate on it. I want to keep this thread short, so I will ask for some posts to be deleted once it's determined that the idea is required, or not. (or even something that you'd like to have, and could be added later). I will elaborate on my ideas, too.
Chieftess Sep 15, 2002, 09:35 PM I'll also need people to help, such as:
PHP programmer (for the economics engine)
Economics specialist (or someone who's really good at math)
More will be added (or could be) as I get more ideas.
Octavian X Sep 15, 2002, 11:45 PM I'm good with math... Then again, that's math in a ninth grade geometry class. If you think that could help, though, I'd be happy to volunteer.
BCLG100 Sep 16, 2002, 12:04 AM so who is doing this you or stuck?
Chieftess Sep 16, 2002, 12:06 AM Stuck wanted me to help when I asked him.
BCLG100 Sep 16, 2002, 10:17 AM oh righty if you need any help im here but be warned im not much good at anything
BTW
ITS COMING
Padma Sep 16, 2002, 10:21 AM Ahh, if I only had the time. This sounds like fun. :)
Shaitan Sep 16, 2002, 11:32 AM I think the automation is an excellent idea. The real estate section seems to be redundant to the real estate thread in the RPG forum. Is there a difference?
BCLG100 Sep 16, 2002, 12:04 PM i think it would be good if they worked in conjunction-notice big word curu ;)
Chieftess Sep 16, 2002, 01:28 PM I haven't gotten a good look at the real estate thread, but this is what the real estate will do:
A player can buy a certain amount of game tiles. (i.e., mountains, grasslands, etc.). Each tile generates a certain amount of GPT, plus any improvements. The player can then sell the land, and get more undeveloped land. I could make a "simple corruption" effect, where, say, every 10x10 tiles, each tile loses 1 gold in it's value. (it isn't set in stone yet). If a player hasn't participated in the RPG, or demogame for a month (or 2 weeks?), then their land can be auctioned off for 1/2 the price of the worked tiles.
I'm still figuring out how to make it competative.
(i.e., buying land from other people). Of course, new land owners will have an "Immunity Period", where no one can touch their land.
Shaitan Sep 16, 2002, 01:31 PM How about squatters?
BCLG100 Sep 16, 2002, 01:41 PM or how about as they hold on to it longer they get more expensive but also cost more to upkeep
Chieftess Sep 16, 2002, 01:47 PM squatters?
Shaitan Sep 16, 2002, 01:51 PM It was once the prime method of getting land. Squatters rights go far back in European history. If land was unused a squatter could take residence on the land. If they were there a certain amount of time making use of it they could legally claim the land as their own. Landlords (the original meaning, not an apartment owner) spent considerable time and effort driving squatters off of their lands.
We could make it so if a tile was left fallow (no improvements or RPG attention paid to it for a certain amount of time) then there could be a chance that sqatters took residence and the owner loses the land.
BCLG100 Sep 16, 2002, 01:51 PM people who live there without permission
Strider Sep 16, 2002, 03:45 PM I don't know what happened to the automation in the first place.... We were going to do it, but I guess everyone forgot about it, but what I would like to see is what I proposed in my brainstorming thread(I miss that thread... very entertaining :():
We need an automatic bank. So here's what I think we should do with it:
Have one page for Private Bank accounts. When a person joins the RPG they get a password to access their bank account(put in money/take out money.)
Also the same thing for business's. A registered business recieves a password when it starts up. They then type in this password to access the business account. When it pops up their is differant options like:
1) Take money away from your account(reduces money from your account)
2) Give money to (when you click on this a list of names of RPG people pops and where you can choose who and say how much money your giving)
3)Put money in your account.
4) Take money from someone's account.
To prevent someone from stealing a bunch of money from someone. We could have an option like: Allow ? to take ? amount of cash from account.
Any opinions?
Stuck_as_a_Mac Sep 16, 2002, 03:52 PM heres my vision:
a bank which automaticaly updates the excel spreadsheet every turn chat. It gets its spreadsheet off of Danke's most recent citizen update and then works with it from there. Businesses would go there to post, after getting validated by the FRA, their earnings and directly withdraw and deposit money from accounts. The bank could have a master password to activate any account, should they foreclose it or place a large amount of money in it (ie- settlement of failed BI against donsig). If we can do this, the RPG thread would run seemlessly and smoothly with out need of middle man.
donsig Sep 16, 2002, 08:35 PM Yes we need automation of the accounts. I find it very trying to keep track of what I have. I'm close to having to open of a set of books. :)
Also, the bank accounts never match my records. Could this be because business tranasctions are posted in one place and private tranactions in another?

Currently the real estate section merely sells houses and mansions and that type of thing. No real property is sold. CT is talking about us being able to buy actual game tiles - pieces of our country, something we can see on a map! Something we can put our real estate thread houses on...
Octavian X Sep 16, 2002, 11:29 PM Wow, for once we stole an idea from Apolytonia... The purchase of actual land sounds much like their $mini-game.

I didn't steal the idea. Came up with it independently. Perhaps we should Perhaps we should hear more about what they're doing with the idea though...
Stuck_as_a_Mac Sep 18, 2002, 02:21 PM heh. stole..
i think of it as borrowed. also, only a few people partake in that. we have alot of people in this. you see, a demogame with money's like a mule with a spinning wheel. no one knows how they got it and dang do they know how to use it.
hehehe... mule..
seriously though, lets get programing!
BCLG100 Sep 18, 2002, 02:36 PM am i the only one who didnt understand what stuck just said?
anyways sounds like a good idea so would this be part of stucks website or a different page or what?
Stuck_as_a_Mac Sep 18, 2002, 02:37 PM the simpsons monorail episode (based on the music man). replace demogame with the word town.
and it would be completly separate. im not sure how geocities would react to a .php
BCLG100 Sep 18, 2002, 02:41 PM oh right well i was just wondering so would it be on the demogame website then?
Stuck_as_a_Mac Sep 19, 2002, 07:32 PM i dont know. this threads been oddly inactive, considering how many programers are in this game and the sheer need for this.

Stuck_as_a_Mac Sep 23, 2002, 02:21 PM im taking a 11th grade math class right now, and i currently head the bank, so ill volluenter.
