COTM 61: Scandinavia!

Alright! It's been 4 years since Ragnar has been featured in a COTM, and he had a lot of demands before he'd lead the humans. Had to be Deity (check), had to have lots of land and civs to attack (check) and oh, by the way, he wanted to dominate the seas to give his Berzerks more play. OK, how about nobody else gets Galleys. We've got a deal! Negotiations went long into the morning (over many horns of mead) so the game will start a day later on June 2nd. Being a quarterly special game, you'll get the extra day plus a week at the end to submit.

Civilization: Scandinavia
Rivals: 8 pre-selected
Barbarians: Raging
Difficulty: Deity
Land Form: Archipelago, 60% ocean, Standard map.
Geology:3 billion years old, Normal and Temperate.
AI Aggression: Normal

Just to be clear, the AI can't build Galleys (but they can build Curraghs for contacts). First Ship for the AI that can transport is the Caravel.

Conquest-Class Bonuses:

Free Pottery and Masonry
2 Free Curraghs
100 Free Gold
1 bonus luxury nearby

Open-Class Bonuses
1 Free Curragh

Predator-Class Obstacles:

No Warrior Code
No Free Curragh
Each AI gets 1 Additional Support per city

I have yet to figure out why the AI's dont' have Galleys. So that could be a nice surprise for this game. But Archipelago 60% plays a lot like Continents. So there could be a pesky next door neighbor (or three!). I'll move the worker to the cattle. Then just settle in place if indicated. And then give consideration to the building of the Colossus in an early second city. In general I'd like to just stack up Archers, Galleys and gold to bust out upon obtaining Invention. But who knows what it means for the AI to not have Galleys!

Do barbies have galleys?

Trying to build the Colossus at this level with raging barbarians just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

The AIs not having galleys and raging barbarians would seem to logically fit with us lying on an island all by ourselves, much like the Byzantine Demi-God game last year. But, 8 tribes doesn't fit with that all too well, or does it?

Yes, the Barb's will have Galleys.

Taking away the Galley from the rest of the AI is my take on replicating the Viking impact on Europe - sudden raids from the sea against primarily land based civilizations. It is otherwise a typical Deity level game.

This one looks like fun, I think I may get back into this game.

why must those games have raging barbs or any barbs at all. It just makes the game unfun to me. What's the point to struggle with all those moutains of usless barbs around?
For me that is the killer and puts me off to play COTM.

I second that TheRat. On lower levels where you have advantages it's one thing, but on Deity?

I tend to agree as well but I'm probably going to still give the game a go. :)

Well, I like raging barbs. They put more uncertainty to the game.
