View Full Version : Problem with leaderheads
Vortilex Jun 05, 2009, 05:19 PM Every time I try to install this one leaderhead in BtS, it gives me a message saying that my XML is unable to start. I have no idea what to do here. I haven't' tried running a mod yet, but I still would like to know what I'm doing wrong. Also, how do you install a leaderhead that you created using blender?
phungus420 Jun 05, 2009, 07:11 PM Tutorial: How to Install Custom Leaderheads (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=278906)
Read that tutorial. Also this thread should really be moved to the Custom content forums, as it's mod based.
Vortilex Jun 05, 2009, 07:26 PM In the leaderhead I tried, it included a schema file and also a file that seemed to be a combined version of two different files. Do I just copy/paste or copy it word-for-word.
phungus420 Jun 05, 2009, 07:33 PM Unless you're modifying source code, there shouldn't be any schema changes... Anything you do with schema files at least wol't have any effect.
Also read the tutorial I linked for you, use it's directions.
Vortilex Jun 05, 2009, 07:36 PM I did read the tutorial, but I'll try again. If a schema file was included do I just put the info in the normal ones?
phungus420 Jun 05, 2009, 07:41 PM Ignore whatever files were included in the download (except for the art itself obviously). And just start over again using the Tutorial. That's all I can really say, the tutorial will guide you through the steps of taking the art, and adding a new leaderhead. Whatever other files are in that download are just going to confuse the issue.
Vortilex Jun 05, 2009, 07:51 PM OK, thanks.
Vortilex Jun 06, 2009, 02:20 PM So I tried these steps (after uninstalling and reinstalling the game...again) It came up with the same error message. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game (this time without the extra leaderhead) and it gave me the XML error. Maybe it's not the leaderhead...I have it set so that XML opens in NotePad, could this be the problem. It's default was to open it in Internet Explorer (which I no longer use, I use Google Chrome now :goodjob: ) and I changed it three times. First to Microsoft Word (when after trying this I realized it was no longer opening the XML) and then back to IE, and then to NotePad. Should I have kept the XML in IE when adding the leaderhead? Sorry, I know this is starting to sound more like a tech problem, but I just contacted Firaxis support about that issue
The_J Jun 06, 2009, 05:43 PM What is the exact error message?
phungus420 Jun 06, 2009, 07:56 PM Yeah, knowing what the error message is would help. That said, if you've reinstalled, and are still getting an error message, I can only think of one thing that will cause that.
Delete everything in your custom assets folder.
mechaerik Jun 07, 2009, 03:33 PM Use notepad to edit your xml. better yet, get Notepad++, its free.
Take a screenshot of the error and post it, that will help us help you.
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 04:22 PM Actually, it's more like a long string of error messages, but If I post the first one, that should work, they all say pretty much the same thing.

Have you deleted everything in your custom assets folder?
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 08:00 PM I tried to get y'all a screenshot of the error message and found a different one that has just appeared:
C:\Users\user\Documents\Presentation1.ppt
Now, I last had this one when I uninstalled a Python reader. I followed Ori's instructions and fixed it. However it has just returned (don't know why). Since this issue loads before the XML loads(uncached) I could not get the screenshots. I don't know what's going on with this issue, but the leaderheads don't have Python files, so I don't know why it has this new issue.
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 08:07 PM So I emptied my custom assets folder for BtS, but I still get the Python error. I don't know if that fixed the XML error, but I know it was an uncached XML error because the first loading thing is another XML. That loads fine. It then loads Audio and then Python. Usually after Python it changes to XML(uncached). For some reason it stopped initializing Python, and therefore I don't know if XML(uncached) has been fixed by clearing my BtS Custom Assets folder. Should I also clear my Vanilla Custom Assets folder?
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 08:10 PM I don't know if this is relevant but recently I uninstalled Warlords because it stopped loading. I got no error message, but after pressing play, nothing happened. I followed Ori's advice there, but nothing changed. I uninstalled it because I was under the impression that BtS didn't need Warlords to run. But it ran fine for a long time without Warlords. I installed it for fun, and when I uninstalled it was when the Python error came up for the first time. Do y'all think that may be an issue?
phungus420 Jun 07, 2009, 08:11 PM No need to mess with the Vanilla custom assets, as it shouldn't load anything from there if you are playing BtS. That said it wol't hurt anything if you do.
So let me get this straight, your custom assets is clean, you've reinstalled the game, so everything is a fresh install, and you're still getting an error?
phungus420 Jun 07, 2009, 08:13 PM I don't know if this is relevant but recently I uninstalled Warlords because it stopped loading. I got no error message, but after pressing play, nothing happened. Ahh, I see. That's your problem. BtS needs some stuff from Warlords (some XML and python). BtS installs the needed assets for Warlords when it installs, but if you remove it after the fact, that'll kill BtS. Just reinstall BtS, that should fix your problem.
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 08:34 PM I contacted Firaxis support on Friday and today I've gotten my reply:
The problem is a hardware one Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipse will not run this game sorry.
However, I have been able to play for as long as I've had this computer, excepting the last month. I spoke to them about this though and am awaiting a reply.
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 09:00 PM  for some reason it still isn't working...after a new install...again. btw, does your expansion still work in this situation?
Vortilex Jun 07, 2009, 09:50 PM I did install a new driver thing following Firaxis's support. That didn't really help though.
phungus420 Jun 08, 2009, 02:06 PM :hmm:
Well, since you had it working once before, you should try deleting everything from all custom assets folders, and any extra mods you might have picked up along the way. Fully uninstall, then reinstall the same way you did before that got it to work (sounds like you installed vanilla, warlords and BtS).
That's the only thing I can think of, since you say it worked before but firaxis is stating there is a compatibility issue. This has kinda wandered off the range of modding and adding a custom leader. You should probably open a new thread in Tech Support, since that's what this has become.
Vortilex Jun 08, 2009, 08:02 PM Yeah, I was just about to move the thread anyway (or at least the topic). If anyone has any more advice please post it in that thread. It will be under Fix-It list. Thanx. Strange to think that a small issue with installing a leaderhead has turned into a failed XML :P
