I'm using a version of History in the Making that changes you to the weakest civ when you become the most powerful (even though that option isn't enabled).

I know the new version fixes this problem, but it isn't backwards compatible with my save game.

Is there any way to manually switch back to my original civ? Say by editing the save files?

You cannot edit save games. However you can save the game in World Builder as a World Builder Save. WBSs use a text format, so that you can edit it, though some information is lost when converting to the WBS format.

I was digging through the mod folder and saw that HiTM actually has the player change mod in it. So I just pressed CTRL-SHFT-L and switched back.
