View Full Version : Informational - Should Deputy Governors be elected or appointed?
Shaitan Sep 20, 2002, 02:18 AM This issue of deputies for governors is currently being discussed in this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32131). One point that needs resolution is whether deputy governors should be appointed by the winning governor or if the second place finisher in the governor elections should automatically become deputy governor.
This poll is informational and will remain open for 48 hours.
WarriorZeus Sep 20, 2002, 05:34 AM hmm abstain and appointed are neck and neck...btw who would abstain....?????????
civ_steve Sep 20, 2002, 06:19 PM Appointed. The governor should select a citizen that the governor is comfortable with as deputy. Also, the deputy should be someone the governor has easy communications with.
Great Iguanaman Sep 20, 2002, 07:05 PM I agree with steve. If they are elected you might end with bad chemistry or extremely opposing opinions. The governor needs to be completely confident in there deputy, or depudy :), for them to be a well oiled team machine. I vote for Appointed, and you need to go vote me for the Trade Ministers Chat Rep, go, now. Theres my shamelful plug.

donsig Sep 20, 2002, 07:13 PM I vote to appoint deputy governors!
Zarn Sep 20, 2002, 07:26 PM Elected. If this is appointed, why would the Vice President and the advisor deputies be elected? It should be one way or the other.
Octavian X Sep 20, 2002, 09:13 PM I vote for elected, for the same reason Zarn does. It's not good to have a double standard.
Shaitan Sep 20, 2002, 09:16 PM I also voted elected. Although I myself would prefer to appoint a deputy (if I was in a leader position, that is) we've got a strong precedence for the runner up taking the position. I would be interested in pursuing changing all of the deputies to appointments but for now I think we should keep them the same.
Zarn Sep 20, 2002, 09:33 PM Wow! People actually agree with me. There important people, too.
Great Iguanaman Sep 20, 2002, 11:45 PM ah shaitan, we finaly diasagree.
They need to be appointed because it insures that two people have good chemistry and relatively similar viewpoints. However, i think the best thing, which is most common, is that the govenor puts the deputy govenor up for election. but then the problem with that is that if the vote doesnt reach quorum then what? If you want to argue about quorum NL has started a thread about it. I am undecided about this issue but i dont wanna vote abstain, becuase i wanns wait until i decide completly to vote one way or the other. I was decided to appoint, but your reasons have persuaded me to be on the fence. Let me hear more reasons.

Shaitan Sep 21, 2002, 05:49 AM There are points for either method. Runner up means that (optimally) the people are selecting both the leader and the leader's replacement. The major benefit of the appointment method is the leader will (once again, optimally) have a backup they trust and can work with.
I think the important thing with this current measure is to keep in line with our existing rules. If debate turns out to be overall in favor of appointments then change to this method for ALL leader/deputys.
Keep all of the deputy placements the same and change them all at the same time. Any arguments for deputy governor fit just as well for any other leader's deputy.
neutral leader Sep 21, 2002, 09:59 AM believe it or not, i have actually changed my mind on this issue! i know thats a rare feat for me, but every once in a while an argument persuasive enough does come along. the way i figure it now, the runner-up in the election also represents a major slice of the population, therefore making him lt. governor creates a coalition-like situation which invariably results in wider enfranchisement and representation. in the final tally subtract my vote from appointed and add it to elected. thanks.
Great Iguanaman Sep 21, 2002, 10:11 AM im still waiting for a reason for me to vote one way or the other. Come one people, give me a reason.

Zarn Sep 21, 2002, 01:31 PM @ Great Iguanaman- Well, I ran against raven1er for Domestic Leader. He became my deputy, and we became friends. Does that help? This is not like US Presidency, but a demogame. There are no real enemies here.
Great Iguanaman Sep 21, 2002, 02:30 PM true, true....
I think i will vote elected, not only because of Zarns reasons, but because it makes sense for the deptuy. However, for chat rep, that just doesnt make sense. But thats not what this is about.
Bytheway Zarn, Have you voted yet. I am really close to quorum and would appreciate your vote. Thank you.
The Great Iguanaman
Zarn Sep 21, 2002, 04:35 PM Yes, I have voted.
Octavian X Sep 21, 2002, 08:56 PM That is another reason I voted against having deputies appointed. We all know that approval polls always have some difficulty passing. In the last game, I was up for trade deputy, and the vote fell short quroum. It took a second poll to finally get me approved. We won't always have the time to do that, though.
Shaitan Sep 23, 2002, 02:35 PM It's close but elected has the edge. We'll proceed with elected as our placement method.
