View Full Version : Racist Faction?
deadliver Jun 20, 2009, 03:40 AM I love this mod. I am currently hunting down my copy of SMAC because of this mod.
I started my first game with the Hive and heard the units' speech. You are using the "chinese civ" sounds for Hive? Just because the Hive have a Chinese leader?!?
That seems pretty racist, the player may assume all of Yang's followers know a dialect of chinese because he is their leader?
edit: Morgan's faction doesn't speak Swahili...

Lord Tirian Jun 20, 2009, 08:47 AM I started my first game with the Hive and heard the units' speech. You are using the "chinese civ" sounds for Hive? Just because the Hive have a Chinese leader?!?I'd rather think because it's better than making every faction have the same unit sounds.
Furthermore, I guess most leaders are pretty charismatic and important, so it seems logical that they would adapt their preferred language as "official" language in their faction, because you *do* need one, since they are multi-national (in Earth terms).
Also, you could always suggest a better choice of sounds, if you think it's really bad.
Cheers, LT.
deadliver Jun 20, 2009, 01:18 PM I suppose it is reasonable that Yang would prefer his native language. As far as alternate sounds? I think all factions should have American accents. JK
Maniac Jun 21, 2009, 02:58 AM Yes, you caught me, I'm a complete and utter racist. ;)
I agree Swahili for the Morganites is kinda silly. But the question is indeed: what else should they get?? As the English selection sounds kinda have a ridiculous accent (as do about all selection sounds of course...), I wouldn't mind giving them the American selection sounds btw.
On the topic of factions and nationality, even though the intro movie specifically states the factions are built around ideology and not nationality, IMO Firaxis did clearly draw from certain nationalities for some of the factions. I'm thinking here of Yang (would fit as a North Korean dear leader), the University (look at their base names) and the Peacekeepers (their base graphic is a Taj Mahal lookalike). So for those factions I don't think it's unfitting to have Chinese/Russian/Indian selection sounds.

Don't get me wrong Maniac, I was not declaring you a racist. You are correct regarding the building art for the peacekeepers and I agree with you about the appropriate sounds. In summary,
this was a stupid thread title.

It is silly indeed. :yup:
They should speak Afrikaans. :D
Lord Tirian Jun 21, 2009, 07:19 AM Don't most civs in Civ use multiple selection/whatever sounds to add variety? If so, couldn't the factions get sounds from multiple civs, making them sound more "international"? One could even bias it a bit towards the leader's native language. For example, if a faction has four selection sounds, then University could get Russian + Russian + German + English (as in England); Gaians could get English + English + Dutch + America; Yang could get Chinese + Chinese + Russian + America; Santiago could get Spanish + Spanish + Italian + America etc.
Cheers, LT.

Good idea there, and that's definitely possible.
Maniac Jun 21, 2009, 11:02 PM What implementation did you have in mind? Including renamed versions of all selection sounds in the mod?

Now that is a cool idea. Would add to the U.N. flavor (well mostly un anyhow)

That's one of the ways to do it. The other way is to link to other labels in the sounds xml.
Maniac Jun 22, 2009, 03:19 PM I don't understand what you mean. You can only link one AS3D to one file name. AFAIK the AS3D will use all files with a similar name as long as only the number at the end is different, but I don't see how one AS3D could use vastly different file names.
GeoModder Jun 28, 2009, 01:13 PM Perhaps my memory played tricks with me.
In any case, it's not one of the most urgent things, so I'll let it rest for a while. :)
