milr Jul 01, 2009, 03:28 AM Could be a long hike to the Rhine, so I guess I'll settle down, fell trees for a barracks, then prepare for an unfriendly visit to a nearby? neighbor. My engineers tell me some black stallions would make the journey easier.
Rustwork Jul 01, 2009, 08:06 AM I believe one of the earliest games (the hittite one?) was lower level and it was beneficial to walk the settler for many turns (5,6 maybe) until a suitable start was found. not even many 2 food squares where we are now. could a few turns used to "scout" with the settler be better than settling in place without a river. this start looks like chopping forests will be necessary early in the game just to be able to get to size 6. but what if we walk and it gets worse? might be a slow beginning either way. the conquest bonus of curraghs makes me wonder if we are on an island.
milr Jul 01, 2009, 04:19 PM If a good location is 5-6 away my enlisted men will find it and I'll settle it with my first settler, or try to conquer it if I'm late on the scene. IMO, the start is neither great nor a total bust, it just requires patience.
MinutiaRules Jul 01, 2009, 05:52 PM Germany, hmmm. Time to think about the victoy condition. I guess going for earliest diplo or SS might allow for having fun with Panzers. I don't have any experience with 20K or 100K so maybe these too? In any event if the decision is made to get to the MA then having some fun building wonders might be on. As far as the start its hard to walk away from that cow. But a worker move could prove revealing.
civ_steve Jul 02, 2009, 02:00 AM I'm having a little difficulty getting the starting files uploaded so we'll be a little bit delayed in starting. I plan on extending the submittal date an extra day as well. Stay tuned ...

It was COTM 2, with the Dutch on Monarch. There was a clear "trail of breadcrumbs" to follow there, though, with each tile better than the last. (I would never have seen it -or, frankly, even looked - but SirPleb's explanation made perfect sense.) That doesn't appear likely here.
I think I will scout with the worker to the west first, but I think I'll settle 1 step SE. I guess I won't do 20K in Berlin.
civ_steve Jul 02, 2009, 01:50 PM That was a very early COTM, and I believe it was the Dutch one. :)
If you haven't checked it out, the Saves are up!
Lanzelot Jul 03, 2009, 04:33 PM Two free curraghs for a pangaea map?? And we are located in the upper left corner...
And Berlin normally isn't on the coast... There is definitely something fishy here!
But one thing is for sure: we won't get squeezed between the French and the Russians...!
Our settler is standing on the hill, isn't he? So why can't we see more tiles in the west?!

We can't see over the trees. Those three western tiles are all forest.
Megalou Jul 14, 2009, 01:13 PM On COTM 1 as Hittites a stroll was very useful, taking you to some flood plains. I remember because I picked up a silver then. :old:
Megalou Jul 15, 2009, 03:27 AM I like the last predator obstacle. While it may be an actual obstacle for obvious reasons, it could also make for some nice war happiness.
