Hi,
Maybe it's just me but I don't ever see the point of waging war once rifles are discovered. By this time the combination of universities, banks, observatories, and corporations mean my economy booms so fast that I am getting techs every 3 turns or so. However usually the top two AI are also getting techs just as fast, or worse if they are close allies and they trade with each other.
It basically means waging war at this time is pointless as about the time you build enough troops and get them loaded into galleons, you or your opponent has researched 3 or 4 techs which makes them about obsolete.
My problem with this situation is it vastly reduces the number of options in the game at this point. Even building new cities is usually not worth it when you combine the stability problems, research penalty (from too many cities) and the diversion of resources into new maintanence costs, hammers spent on settlers, defenders, infrastructure, etc. It always seems better at this point to turtle up and just rush for the space race.
What can I do to add some variety to my games at this point?
What I do for other mods and standard civ is I usually play on my own modded version of Epic speed where I reduce unit costs, and slightly reduce building costs, while increasing research costs slightly.
