View Full Version : Flavor for civ gold

With civ gold 5.0 coming out this weekend, I was thinking about compiling flavor units for the 117 civs.

I mean really, we've got tons of civs and tons of units now. Isn't time we married the two together? What good are all the graphics if there's no home for them? What spice is there to 117 civs if they all look the same? It seems the two halves of the mod board aren't talking to each other enough! And so many people are just independently creating unit graphics or civs without collaborating with the larger Civ Organism.

Why don't we start coming together in close collaboration now?

Ok, so now there are two ways to create flavor for all of our new civs. Firstly, create regional unit_artstyles, secondly, to steal VD's unique graphics for the base 34 civs to use as additional artstyles. Then simply assign each of the 130 civs or so to either one of the new regional artstyles or to one of VD's artstyles.

I could simply use VD's template as a template for all of the artstyles, but that would defeat the purpose of VD, hence I'd prefer to create new regional art_sytles with graphics that didn't get used for VD.

The thing I'd want help with is compiling the unit graphics for these regional artsyles. I haven't hung out in these boards long enough to be familiar with the work that's been done in regards to units. I don't mind doing the xml work, but sifting around looking through thousands of individual units would irritate the hellouttame.

So here's how you guys can specifically help me out. I'd like for different people to volunteer to be responsible for 1 or 2 regions, and for simply finding/compiling the graphics to be used with each of those regions.

Once I have the graphics, I don't mind working on the xml's (which seem to be pretty easy).

So here are the regions I am proposing (with some example civs to give the idea for the type of ethnic graphic):

1. Native North America (Sioux, Apache, Iroquois, etc...)
2. Native South America (Inca, Aztec, Olmec, Toltec, Maya, etc...)
3. Euro/Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Cuba, etc...)
4. Scandinavia
5. Africa
6. Ancient Mediterranean (Rome, Carthage, Greece, Babylonia, Hittites, etc...)
7. Eastern Europe (Serbs, Slavs, Checks, Poles, Slovenes, Croats, etc...)
8. Western Europe (France, Germany, England, Italy, Spain)
9. SE Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar)
10. Indus Valley (all things Hindu)
11. Central Aisa
12. East Asia
13. Persian
14. Nile Delta
15. Arabic

If anyone has any suggestions regarding those regions for either deleting or adding to that list, please say so.

Additionally, even though I'm compiling generic graphics for these regions, if anyone wants to make flavor units available for any specific civilization, I will happily accept them and accomodate them into the xmls for that civ. For example, even though I have an Eastern European unit artstyle, if someone has flavor graphics specific for Serbia, than that is cool.

Now, the below units are the units I want graphics for. I chose mainly infantry and people units, because frankly, who cares about different colors and shapes of metal? When I think of traditional ethnic clothing, metal doesn't come to mind.

Archer
Axeman
Chariot
Galley
Spearman
Warrior
Worker
Settler
Horse Archer
Swordsman
Trireme
War Elephant
Crossbowman
Caravel
Knight
Longbowman
Maceman
Pikeman
Cavalry
Cuirassier
Grenadier
Musketman
Rifleman
Infantry
Machine Gun
Marine

Again, if anyone wants to comment on this list, please do so.

Now, to reitterate, what I'd like to see is ideally for 13 different people (or 4 very industriously bored persons) to volunteer to pick graphics for each region. For example, Joe Blow could volunteer to find graphics for Euro America, and Jill Blow could take on the Native North Americans and Native South Americans.

So, if anyone wants to, go ahead and volunteer in this thread today! I figure that with a few of us working together, we could finish this in a week. And thereby have 117 flavored civs to play with!

Think of this as a sort of merging of VD/Diversica and Civ Gold.

After this mod, in the future there will always be a home for new unit graphics; furthermore, whenever someone creates a new civ, there will be flavored units to go along with it.

a new civ or new units graphics, we can simply plop them into this mod.

You'll be pleased to find out that for a long time, mamba has been filing away unit graphics in a very similar manner, but in a publicly accessible repository, here (https://sourceforge.net/projects/civ4artrepo/).

Did you put Egypt as a culture group? :) The Middle East should be divided up between, in my opinion, the "Arabic" civs, the "Persian/Mesopotamian" civs, and probably the Egyptian civs.

I'd be happy to help look up units, if that's what you need; Bakuel's probably our man here. He has entire unit sets with most of the units we need already just... there, ready for the taking. They are detailed and pretty accurate.

That's great. Yes, please do help find units. I don't mind the xml work, but I haven't hung out in the mods forums long enough to possess a knowledge of what's been done in regards to unit graphics. That's where I need help.

I originally thought about having a "Nile" region. So we can go ahead and add that back in.

Thanks for the link, NikNak, but when I went there, I didnt see any files.
The "files" link is empty.

I can see that you made revisions to something somewhere, but I can't find a proper download. Could you post a link for me please?

Have you seen The Capo's work? I think you might like it.

I think I can find the Egyptian units pretty easy if you want - Bakuel made the whole set, up to the late Renaissance units, all in excellent quality. Should I just PM you the links or post them ehre?

I think the second thing that should be done, first being raiding Avians and Mambas mods, is to go through the New Civilizations forum and search for all your civs first. Most likely people like StrategyOnly have put together a collection of units plus XML for alot of the civs you will be trying to remake. Admittadly most of them could probably use updating or complete overhauls, but it will cut your work signifigantly.

Either. Posting the links here would probably be good though.

Would you be willing to search for art for African civs?

SourceForge's redesign has made things a tad confusing. The link you want is under "develop (https://sourceforge.net/projects/civ4artrepo/develop)". :)
