View Full Version : Okay, guys, I don't know which XML documents to edit! HELP!
AstuteClass Jul 17, 2009, 12:18 PM I bought the 3-in-1 pack on Steam (that's Civilization IV, Civilization: Warlords and Civilization: Beyond the Sword)
Basically, there are about 7 of the same documents. And I don't know which one to edit. I tried just editing the Beyond the Sword one, because that's the one I play, but it didn't work.
I like to play on Marathon and I like to make technology twice as long to be discovered and I like to remove global warming. But I can see straight away that no matter what I change the iResearchPercent to, it always stays the same.
Here are all the directories with the same XML documents in;
They're in the Civilization IV folder, then in the Civilization IV Beyond the Sword folder, another lot in the Civilization IV Warlords folder - but that's not all of them. When you go into the Civilization IV Beyond the Sword, there are two folders called "Beyond the Sword" and Warlords" and both of those have the same XML documents too, and then finally, as well as the Civilization IV Warlords folder having them as mentioned above, there's another folder in there called "Warlords" that have the files too.
So all in all, there are 6 different directories, all with the same XML documents. So which do I edit? Do I edit them all? What if I miss some out?
Please help!
Sorry I sound like a n00b!
TheLadiesOgre Jul 17, 2009, 12:52 PM Alright, leave the base files alone. Copy them to your desktop and then amend them the way you want them. When you have them the way you want them, cut/paste them from your desktop to your MyDocuments/My Games/BTS/Custom Assets/XML folder. That should do the trick, you might need to load the game a couple of times to get it to work.
BTW We are all noobs at some point.
AstuteClass Jul 17, 2009, 01:01 PM Ah that's great, thanks, mate!
Will definitely try that this instance and get back to you!
:D
AstuteClass Jul 17, 2009, 01:50 PM Right, I tried that but a load of errors came up. Was I suppose to just put those two XML documents in their relevant custom assets folders or was I supposed to copy ALL the documents from the XML and put them in their relevant folders, editing only the two I need editing of course?
EDIT: Okay, I tried copying all files and just editing the ones I needed changing and the game wouldn't even load. It kept telling me with a windows warning that it had stopped working!
deanej Jul 17, 2009, 02:42 PM Whatever you are using to edit the files is changing how they are encoded, making it so the game can't read them.

I opened them with Notepad and saved them. Is that bad?
deanej Jul 17, 2009, 03:07 PM Notepad should work. Must be something else then. You could try using this XML Editor (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=270586). It was made just for civ4.
The_J Jul 17, 2009, 03:28 PM What files did you put where?
If you want to play BtS, only the BtS files should go in the BtS directory.
Add only files from Warlords or vanilla, if BtS doesn't have them.
deanej Jul 17, 2009, 03:45 PM Clarification on that last sentence: only add Warlords files if BtS doesn't have them, and only add vanilla files if both Warlords and BtS don't have them.
AstuteClass Jul 17, 2009, 04:56 PM Okay guys, I'm at the end of my tether with this. I thought I had it then because the game loaded fine but then when I made a custom game, the entire map was black, apart from the mini map in the lower right corner.
All I want to do, is change the iResearchPercent for the Marathon speed, and the GlobalWarmingProbability to 0 and then play the game.
Why is this so bloody hard to do?
What do I need to copy to the custom assets folder exactly? Because everything I've copied so far has messed up my install and I've had to delete Beyond the Sword off Steam and redownload it.
deanej Jul 17, 2009, 06:23 PM Just Civ4GameSpeedInfo and GlobalDefines. Just make sure to keep the directory structure the same so they will load properly.
LoneTraveller Jul 17, 2009, 06:49 PM This might be my Lone's way of seeing things but :
I find it difficult to imagine Civ4's original company allowing another company to use their Framework in a way that "Custom Users" would use download users to edit their content.
I know it's hard to follow.
Hard line : I don't know why anybody who hasn't bougth the original data (source code) can be alllowed to do anything the game they bought (no matter what they bought it from (source : Internet, etc...)
IE : Anybody who has not bought the game..."can rot"
Tssha Jul 17, 2009, 07:13 PM The files you need are in the Beyond the Sword package (assuming you want to mod BtS), sid meier's civilization 4 beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets directory. Go to this one first, then sid meier's civilization 4 beyond the sword\Warlords\Assets , then sid meier's civilization 4 beyond the sword\Assets , in that order.
Copying from Beyond the Sword\Assets is more likely to give you good XML files without missing tags. Civ 4 hates missing tags and often refuses to load an XML file if it doesn't find the XML tags it expects in the right order.
You might also want to go into your civilization4.ini file and turn on the debugging features. Definitely enable the XML errors, this'll tell you where Civ 4 is expecting to see something but isn't. Hell, I once inadvertently left a tag open (copy and paste is both precise and sloppy at the same time :crazyeye: )...that one was a :badcomp: to track down.
Be patient, use the latest up-to-date XML files, and take it slow.
