Wyrmshadow Jul 24, 2009, 03:29 AM A Steph request for an immobile ship hull still on the blocks. It took longer than I expected.

Steph Jul 24, 2009, 03:55 AM Thank you very much, it's exactly what I needed. :goodjob:
You know, with all these fine models and your skills with ships, it's a pitty you don't make real units out of them ;)
Wyrmshadow Jul 24, 2009, 04:19 AM Because I don't wanna.
And I chose not to because then I'd have even more requests if I expand into other genres.
I have more models than I have time. So I chose not to pursue every cource at once.
crazyanswer Jul 24, 2009, 04:32 AM That's true, since people can't refrain from requiring for more awerome units ~ :)
However, this unit will be very useful. :goodjob:

I understand and accept your choice, but I can also regret it... Well not really because you use your time making other useful units.
Wyrmshadow Jul 24, 2009, 05:10 AM Which is also why I have never made any Space or Star Trek type units. And I wont.
Madeira Jul 24, 2009, 06:40 AM Those are excelent! Going to consider using the "hull" idea in my mod too.
I have to say my feelings are similar to Steph, seing those awesome hulls you made leaves me wishing you would do some more ancient ships, there's a need for them since there are also many mod makers focusing on ancient and medieval times for their mods.
Steph Jul 24, 2009, 07:51 AM We have a few fine sail ships. the Ship of the Line, an heavy Frigate..
Virote_Considon Jul 24, 2009, 08:16 AM Awesome stuff! :goodjob:

Yes we have a great selection starting from the Age of Discovery period, and we also have a nice lineup of oriental ships, but we're lacking middle-eastern / indian (wont bother to mention african) for both ancient and medieval periods, and perhaps a few more ancient ships for the western civs.
BadKharma Jul 25, 2009, 10:07 AM OMG that turned out better than I expected thanks for making this unusual but useful addition.

There are a few great mid-east/african/arabian Units floating around CFC that I'm using in my mod:
Galleass (Used by mediterannean civs in the 14th to 16th centuries, especially north African Pirates, and the Turks):

Dhow (Used extensively in the Arab world, especially in the Red Sea, Persian Sea, and East Africa):

These are both Early to Late Medieval period though. :P
Wyrmshadow Jul 25, 2009, 11:23 AM aaglo, orthanc both have made fantastic sailing ships in the past. I chose not to because SAILS are either difficult or impossible for my tools to animate adequately. The only one I've attempted would be the HMS Warrior and that was very simple in the extreme when it comes to its sails.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jul 25, 2009, 08:11 PM Sweet stuff - immobile yet perfectly animated death anims - smoking hot and I hope I will not fail at implementing them ^^
Wyrmshadow Jul 25, 2009, 08:50 PM Shouldn't you be studying for your diplomat exam instead of playing video games?
W.i.n.t.e.r Jul 26, 2009, 06:15 AM But I am... there is always time for a lil download... tomorrow morning in the Munich Army University I'll be sweating - and swearing... if I get the time to ; )

Thanks for the Links Da3dalus, I have those as well :) I guess the western world has no need of more medieval ships, and the orient is good too, but there are no middle-eastern equivalents for the many types of "age-of-discovery" ships, besides the Dow. Find myself having the give the western ships to the middle-eastern civs as well.
19Delta Jul 26, 2009, 05:23 PM Not too sure, but I don't think that you are going to find any historically accurate Middle-Eastern or African 16th to 18th century sailing vessels. I don't believe that those cultures took a great interest in the age of sail. Your only exceptions would most likely be the Arab Dhow or the Gallivat, but the Galere also looks like it's design was influenced by the design of the Dhow. I found a link to a good website for sailing vessels to the time period here. Hope this helps.
Ares de Borg Jul 26, 2009, 06:35 PM Excellent ships there, and I agree that the old firaxis sailboats are a shame. I can understand that you don't want to branch out even more though. ;)

Yea, I suppose you're right. Thats why fictional ships would be cool, like some did with meso american ships. Many of us make mods that start with ancient civs but then let them evolve into a "what-if they continued to exist", so it would be cool to have a strong unit lineup for civs like Assyrians or Babylonians.
TopGun Jul 27, 2009, 01:42 PM Re: fictional units for middle-eastern civs the age of sail... (my 2 cents):
The Ottoman Empire, it being the dominant power in that region during the 1700-1800s, had "modern" ship-of-the-lines and frigates as the mainstay of their navy - very much like the European naval powers. Hence, it would be perfectly legitimate to assume that Egypt, Arabia, or (in Civ-terms) Babylonia, Sumeria, and Hatti would sail similar capital ships.
Of course I don't want to squash any creativity on part of our master shipwrights, but these are just my 2 cents.
Madeira Jul 28, 2009, 04:16 AM Yes I guess all the middle-eastern and even african civs could use ships based on Ottoman designs, are there any allready made? :)
Then we need more for early medieval and classical periods
Steph Aug 01, 2009, 01:44 AM I have a small request. Would it be possible for you to make a few additional version?
The exact same models and animation, but smaller.
So I could for instance use the BB hull for battleship, and the smaller version for cruiser.
I would need it for the ship of the line, frigate and later BB.
I you don't want to do it or don't have time, I'll resize them myself with SBB, but I'm afraid it will lose some quality, more than with a new render.
