View Full Version : Aggressive AI setting and Diplo jauggy Jul 27, 2009, 10:40 PM With Aggressive AI setting on, is there a hidden diplomatic penalty against other AIs? I have latest BTS. KaytieKat Jul 27, 2009, 11:21 PM Hi I THINK all the agressive ai setting does is up the unit spamming tendancies of all the AI's. And it doesnt directly make any kind of diplo changes. Indirectly tho since even the most peaceful AI's start acting a lil cocky if they feel they have a very high power rating (which they are more likely to get since they will all build more units than they normally would) you do have to watch out for that. Kaytie Silu Jul 28, 2009, 04:18 AM AFAIK all Aggressive AI does is indeed incur a hidden constant -2 diplo penalty between all Civs. Gumbolt Jul 28, 2009, 04:31 PM If Shaka starts spawning more units i would be impressed. Insanity_X Jul 28, 2009, 05:16 PM I thought that in pre-BTS all aggressive AI did was add a diplo penalty to all civs, however in BTS the aggressive AI was coded to be more scary in general (more unit spammy, less wonder building etc). hence why some time back there was a thread asking people if they put on aggressive AI if they planned to axe/chariot/warrior/quecha rush an AI. r_rolo1 Jul 28, 2009, 07:00 PM In Vanilla and Warlords Agressive AI means that all of the AI have a -2 demerit with the human. Call it "Pissed with Human" AI if you want ;) In BtS the Agressive AI is pretty much what the label says: all the AI are more with war in their minds than in the regular settings. Unlike the Vanilla and Warlords version, there is no bias against human, simply Gandhi going Monty and Monty going to Monty^2 :p sourdiesel Jul 28, 2009, 07:30 PM The definitive thread on aggressive AI http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=234263 r_rolo1 Jul 28, 2009, 07:48 PM Bah, that old thread with people saying Agg AI is what civ should be and others saying that Agg AI acts dumber than the default AI.... sourdiesel Jul 28, 2009, 10:18 PM Bah, that old thread with people saying Agg AI is what civ should be and others saying that Agg AI acts dumber than the default AI.... May be old but there's a lot of decent info and opinions, more than enough to sway a newb like me to agg AI  r_rolo1 Jul 29, 2009, 08:34 AM I was not complaning of being old, I was complaining of the tone the discussion got , with some defending like if was a god-given truth that the Agg AI is what should be the default settings and that the default AI is a "sandbox" ( quoting ) and others that defended with the same strenght that the Agg AI was actually both less in spirit of the game and more stupid because of it's often misguided agressiveness.... To say the truth I'm more on the second side. My experiences with Agg AI make me believe that, atleast until Emperor the Agg AI spams too much units for their own long term good and that makes wars that will serve more to sink them than to help. They also skim out the wonders, allowing a human with a good tactical sense to grab a lot of them while defending on the borders ( I do remember a very interesting game I had with Sitting Bull on Monarch where I faced Alex, Boudi, Genghis , Ragnar, Shaka and Monty in a Pangea. Result: Hordes of melee suiciding in my super-promoted X-bows on border forts with HA cleaning any unit that avoided them.... and the Mids still undone in 1300 AD ) and teching up... jauggy Jul 29, 2009, 07:03 PM How many border forts do you need for that strategy? I've never used forts before - maybe I should try. ladsud Jul 30, 2009, 12:51 AM Ill have to give the Agg AI a shot the next game I play. Just finished a game where Bismark, Jao, Julius and Liz shared a landmass and enjoyed nearly six thousand years of peace and happiness. How boring.... Zeiter Jul 30, 2009, 11:34 PM I've had some games with ridiculously slow global tech rates with aggressive AI. Islam getting founded in like 1700 A.D.... Whether it will make the game easier or harder will very much depend on how your starting position coincides with the setting. Semi-isolated (on an island, but can access and trade with other civs via galleys) = runaway game. Whereas, in the middle of a bunch of crazies, with a tech-fiend AI off somewhere semi-isolated = difficult. Heck, sometimes even being outright isolated (no contact pre-caravels, no trade pre-astronomy) can actually be better than being in a slugfest with aggressive AI. I've often beelined to optics (not even bothering to research alphabet, expecting the AIs to trade for it once I meet them), sent out my caravels, and found leading AIs without even alphabet, such that I then have to self-research alphabet in order to backfill! Edit: P.S. Check out the game in my signature for a ridiculously slow global tech rate thanks to aggressive AI! IronCrown Jul 31, 2009, 06:53 AM The old thread linked above is really not relevant anymore. That was right after the release of BtS. At that time, the AI was terribly bug-ridden to the point that I'd call it broken. Aggressive AI made it even worse: It was easy to stay out of wars and then peaceful victories were ridiculously easy because the AIs teched incredibly slow. And with normal AI it was really like a sandbox because the AI trained very few units. With later patches, the AI bugs were fixed and the "normal" AI was changed to be more aggressive. Current BtS has little in common with the game discussed in that old thread. |
