View Full Version : Giant Earth Maps
zappara Jul 30, 2009, 10:13 AM Here's a couple Genghis Khan's Giant Earth Maps converted to Rise of Mankind 2.71. The map was already included in one form with the modpack but I decided to start making few more as RoM has new civs that could be used in this map. I've also made one map which has no preset civs so you can decide yourself who you want to be in that game - it's also good map for making more scenarios and I've already started making few more for the Mega Civ Pack.
Currently I'm working on a map (req. Mega Civ Pack) which has 50 Modern day civs at historical starting locations. Once that version is ready, I can start making other period scenarios (WW1-2 hopefully).
I've added Storms to the map and also made it more difficult to explore other continents.
Unzip the rar file to 'Rise of Mankind\PrivateMaps' folder.
Credits to Genghis Khan for the original map.

A few questions:
There is a new version of GEM that makes quite a few improvements to the map, how hard would it be to convert this to RoM?
Would you ever have the patience and time to convert one of GEM's Scenario's?
Are the Storms you have placed Permanent? because there are so many it is slowing the game down!
I am making a Scenario with GEM, was going to use Jooyo's but this has the extra Peat Bog's in russia and stuff which is cool, when defining the civs in the WBS if you leave a part out, eg: ArtDefine or Colour or FlagDecal, does it go by the default or does is not work?
Ivan_the_Black Jul 30, 2009, 11:10 PM Please excuse my inexperience.
I unzipped the GEM ROM map files into the ROM private maps folder, however, they do not appear under custom scenario, or scenario options.
Also I have tried to load it up in the world builder but haven't been able to.
What am I doing wrong?
zappara Jul 31, 2009, 07:28 AM if your interested in Modern Scenario's please lend us a hand for the World 2009 Mod, we lost are 2 Experienced modders and really need help with python and up modding. My experience with maps isn't that huge - mostly converted maps to be used with my modpack which comes now with 26 premade maps. Only scenario so far that I've made has been colonization 1500AD scenario for RoM. I would like to make more specific scenarios but making patches for my modpack usually come first and I devote only little time for map files. Though now RoM is quite complete already so I guess I can use bit more time for maps from now on. :)
There is a new version of GEM that makes quite a few improvements to the map, how hard would it be to convert this to RoM?I didn't know that there was newer version. I got to download it. Converting it to RoM is easy task but rather time consuming as RoM has plenty of new resources that need to be placed to the map. But since I already got older GEM converted to RoM, I can probably use Winmerge program to merge the resource changes - nevertheless it would take one or two evenings to convert the new version of the map for RoM.
Would you ever have the patience and time to convert one of GEM's Scenario's?Do you mean the scenarios I make or some existing GEM scenarios? I guess I could try converting but note that I haven't tried creating complex scenarios yet and I'd need to look up for some historical maps before trying to make f.ex. World War scenarios.
Are the Storms you have placed Permanent? because there are so many it is slowing the game down!Storms in RoM are dynamic mod feature ie. they expand and disappear randomly. My test game seem to indicate that from GEM map most Storms disappear in couple hundred turns so they aren't working with this map exactly the way they are supposed to. They do seem to slow down the game so I might have to remove them - some random events will anyway generate Storms during gameplay.
I am making a Scenario with GEM, was going to use Jooyo's but this has the extra Peat Bog's in russia and stuff which is cool, when defining the civs in the WBS if you leave a part out, eg: ArtDefine or Colour or FlagDecal, does it go by the default or does is not work?I think some tags are needed and some can be left out. I haven't tried what civ specific tags could be left out. I'd assume the game would use the default values if it's left out from map file, though this needs some testing.
Please excuse my inexperience.

What am I doing wrong?Make sure you unzip the rar files to the privatemaps folder that already contains other RoM map files (those that are included with the modpack). The new maps should appear on the custom scenario list after you've reloaded the mod.
Ivan_the_Black Jul 31, 2009, 08:28 AM Thank you for your prompt help.
I made sure I extracted the rar files to the private maps folder under the RoM mods folder and restarted the mod.
Unfortunately, the scenarios didn't appear what is more I noticed that other scenarios are not showing up as well such as Antartica, Demographica, Huge Europe, etc.
I even went and made sure to re extract the files to the private maps folder to no avail.
Interestingly when I try to load the map in world builder it immediately says I lost the game shows a black screen and then goes through the motions of a normal lost game end game.
Is there something I am doing wrong?

Is there something I am doing wrong?Don't know what prevents maps from showing up correctly in the custom scenario menu but you could try this:
Create new folder named PublicMaps under Rise of Mankind folder
Copy/extract map files to this location
Start the mod
If this doesn't work, then you could alternatively try to move the map files to 'Beyond the Sword\Publicmaps' folder. Just note that RoM maps won't work with vanilla BtS.
Ivan_the_Black Jul 31, 2009, 08:40 AM Thanks again,
I don't know if this is significant, but I have tried loading up the world save directly and it boots up RoM on its own it goes through the motions of allowing me to choose a civilization, loads up the map, and then I am confronted with a black map screen and the statement I have lost the game.
Tried creating a public maps folder in RoM moving the files there to no avail.

We don't need help with the map, Genghis has completed the map with all the cities on his GEM. we need an experienced modder to help with some features we want, Listed here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=303085).

Ivan_the_Black Jul 31, 2009, 10:11 PM I tried the preset civs map and ran into the issue with the black screen/ defeat on load up trying multiple civs.
I tried the random placement map and started playing just fine, however, both never show up in the scenario selection screen I have to directly load the map manually from the directory.
civ4ludo Aug 08, 2009, 01:45 AM Hi Zappara,
thank you for your great mod.
I have a question about "lots of resources". Can I use with RoM? If yes, do I have to move it to the private maps folder of RoM?
Thks,
Ludo

Yes, RoM looks for map files from that directory.
civ4ludo Aug 09, 2009, 02:55 AM thank you!
Chiyochan Sep 04, 2009, 10:04 AM thanks, i just went looking for this and here it is, now i can play without randomly placing the new resources.
SaintRaw Oct 26, 2009, 10:54 AM I love GEM with RoM..
You guys should continue improving GEM.
I only play on this map so seeing improvements makes me happy, not that there is much to improve ^^.
cheesemijit Oct 27, 2009, 12:51 PM Your Giant Earth Map doesnt work with 2.8, I think it is because of Henry VIII being in the scenario but not the mod, should be easy to fix. I have made a few changes to the scenario but Civ start positions may be a little off, i have tried to balance out asia a bit. I have aso but marsh where i believe it was intended by Genghis (The desert with floodplains where it did not belong (India, Netherlands, China)). 232457
PS: Where is Henry VIII? he was my favorite LH (Sci/Ind)
zappara Oct 27, 2009, 01:03 PM PS: Where is Henry VIII? he was my favorite LH (Sci/Ind)Just checked and he is included with RoM 2.8Full mod. Lite version doesn't include new modular leaders.
generalstaff Oct 27, 2009, 01:43 PM PS: Where is Henry VIII? he was my favorite LH (Sci/Ind)
You could also wait until this weekend. I plan to release my updated LH Pack; it contains Meiji, same traits as Henry VIII.
zappara Oct 29, 2009, 11:00 AM You could also wait until this weekend. I plan to release my updated LH Pack; it contains Meiji, same traits as Henry VIII.Cool, I was going to add your leaderpack to new Mega Civ pack and some new civs from Civ Gold 5... ;)
generalstaff Oct 29, 2009, 02:00 PM Cool, I was going to add your leaderpack to new Mega Civ pack and some new civs from Civ Gold 5... ;)
That is cool news. Just make sure to not include the duplicate leaders (Geronimo, Franz Joseph, Maria Theresia, Robert the Bruce/Robert I (I do have better Music for Scotland though) that I know of).
Also, my LH pack will be available today. There were not many 2.8 changes.
zappara Nov 01, 2009, 06:55 AM Tested GEM with 31 civs and it does seem to crash when finish the 1st turn. Couldn't figure yet what's causing it as the logs didn't indicate any errors.
JosEPh_II Nov 01, 2009, 01:39 PM So GEM will crash for 2.8Lite because it doesn't contain all the LHs?
Or does it crash for both Lite and Full?
If it does this needs noted in the 2.8 Discussion and Bug thread sp players will know.

quibing Nov 03, 2009, 01:48 AM I, too, there is an error. How can I help?
SaintRaw Nov 03, 2009, 02:52 PM Play the other GEM made for 2.7. It has 36 starting civs and works fine for me, I do have the full version though.
os79 Nov 14, 2009, 06:34 PM Zappara, are you still working on 31 preset GEM?
I confirm along with others and you that the map crash after the first click of "End Turn" button.

I confirm along with others and you that the map crash after the first click of "End Turn" button.Haven't checked it again yet - been sick and getting the mega pack ready has taken all my time this week. But I intend to check it out soon.
zappara Nov 28, 2009, 10:58 AM Tested the map yesterday and it works now after I had merged new RevDCM 2.61 to RoM - so with RoM 2.81 patch these giant maps should work again. I'll try to get the patch ready soon.
JosEPh_II Nov 28, 2009, 06:48 PM Cool! :D
os79 Nov 28, 2009, 09:23 PM Here is a weird bug...
I started the Giant Earth Map (not the one you created but the one you adapted from the original) without any modifications. It went to the first turn just fine. I even clicked "End Turn" and it went on to next two or so turns JUST FINE!
But I did not like the leaders for few of civs so I modded out Hannibal to be replaced by Dido, Alexander replacing Pericles, Atotztli replacing Mont(whatever(. The scenario started up to custom screen just fine. After I prepare it for the launch, I clicked Launch.
Here is the problem, it stopped at "Init Graphics" and say Runtime error. See, I started the unmodded version just fine. So it seems that it have problems getting graphics from Modules folder.
Any ideas how ot solve this?
Thanks!
50caliber Dec 01, 2009, 08:39 PM I tried to play the GEM with 2.8 and the altered civs were back to their originals, Australia was back to being Celts etc.. Is there anyway to fix this? GEM worked fine with 2.71...

Which GEM map? If I recall RoM has several GEM maps included... these maps should also now work with v2.81 patch.
luckxor Dec 03, 2009, 04:23 AM This map is too large. 8g ram, although during the Middle Ages, the turn until the end of Waiting for 3 minutes.

Don't complain until you had tried out Afforess' A New Dawn modmodpack. Just download and run the installer, uncheck all the uncheckable boxes and install. It will have speed optimizations. Play (not save compatible). Then report back with your complaint, if you have any now :D.

i downloaded the 2.81 patch and overwrote the necessary 2.8 files. i attempted to load 3 different GEM maps:
1. the GEM map with no preset civs worked fine. i chose a "non original" civ, the assyrians, and they were still the assyrians when the game loaded.
2. the GEM map with 36 preset civs (including Israel, Australia, etc..) loaded, by did not work correctly. I chose a "non original" civ, australia, but they were the Celts (the civ that Australia originally was, before it was modded) when the game loaded.
3. the GEM map with 31 preset civs would not load and got a memory allocation msg or something. tried it twice.

is this something to do with the DCM that increases the game speed by about 15%, or is this something new?
cheesemijit Dec 03, 2009, 12:21 PM Something new, he removed all the python callbaks, dont ask me what they are because i dont know but they are something in the code that isnt needed and slow the game down. some people are reporting up to 50% speed increases.

tried to install it and play rom 2.81 but it crashed to desktop

how do i download "mega" for 2.8? on the main rom download page there are only options to download "full" and "lite." i downloaded "full."

I tried it on 2.81 I saw not very different. My purpose in the world map to play optimally. I do not want Giantic map. In the meantime, I can not find the giant map. Giant on the map until the Future era of optimum play, I know. Huge map is very frustrating to end the game quickly.
gunburned Dec 05, 2009, 07:04 PM All seemed to be working fine, but ive seemed to be running into a problem around 500BC in which im getting a crash to desktop. Ive started several games on either of the 3 GEM maps. They all seem to be crashing around the same years. I have 2.81 Insalled and am running 2.71 GEM maps. I have 6gb ram 1g video and an I7 processor, so im ruling out a ram problem and such. Anyone have any ideas on why this problem is occuring? or maybe if this happening with anyone else? Thanks
BadaBing Dec 06, 2009, 01:14 PM @gunburned - I have a similar spec PC and everything played ok up to the 1700's. Starting to get MAF's now and trying to figure out how to stop them!
gunburned Dec 06, 2009, 10:28 PM Baaaah if theres a will theres probably some way. Maybe theirs something wrong with the AI decisions in exicuting actions. Ive decided im gunna try and use the editor and delete some units see if i can get past that turn. Ill let you know if it works.
gunburned Dec 10, 2009, 12:00 AM Looks like going into the editor and destorying some civs; WORKED! Problem arised again though :(. About 50 turns later maybe. but now i cant even get into the editor without it crashing, looks like i head a dead end, I guess the gigantic maps arent stable enough. oh well cant have everything.
Humakty Dec 16, 2009, 09:18 AM @gunburned : maybe it's revolution, and other similar options creating civs that cause the crash. They tend to create civs in great number on big maps, and the DLL fields a limited number as maximum. So once those create the civ too much = fatal CTD !
os79 Jan 09, 2010, 11:09 AM Deleted. Messed up positions of civs mostly because I'm reluctant to go into Worldbuilder personally and hunt down every civs I don't want. So I used Notepad++ to edit out civs but that messed badly the positions of civs.
Until further notice, no 4 civs map yet.
os79 Jan 10, 2010, 07:31 PM FINALLY! FINALLY! FINALLY!
I got the earth maps with just four civs, yay!
Anyway...
Here is the Giant Earth Map preset with 4 civs (Sumeria, Egypt, India and China).
Notice you need Nefertiti LH to play with this map, or just mod the LH in the notepad++ yourself.
It already comes with BarbarianCivs option on for future spawning of civs. However, you can easily add in Revolutions option in Custom Game yourself as well.
Enjoy!
Ambro2000 Jan 11, 2010, 03:43 AM Nice job os79.
This will most likely work on my computer too! :D
What I ment earlier though was what spec ones computer need to play the original version with 32 civs? Or is that computer yet to be invented? :)
Would be pretty cool of it was possible to get the correct starting locations of later civilizations as well.

I understood your question about computer specs. It is just that it depend on your tweakings after you have 3GB of RAM or better. Because Civ4 mostly stay with about 2GB... the other RAM is used by your system for other stuff. That is why it got MAF because other system need RAM and Civ4 is considered lower priority to other programs.
So to get this game to run steadily without too much MAFs, you need to use boot.ini in Windows XP to get 3GB switch, or increaseuserva in bcdedit for Vista, or the same increaseuserva for 7 with bcdedit.exe. For more details on getting 3gb switch for your system (ONLY IF YOU HAVE 3GB RAM!) google it and find it in Microsoft page. That shuold hopefully reduce MAFs. Oh, that is only for 32 bit system. 64-bit system already do all that automatically.
To put it short: 64 bit with 3GB and higher system works wonders for reducing MAFs to a rarity. Otherwise, use 3gb switch in 32 bit in system with 3GB RAM.

I don't know what you meen with MAF. However, I prehaps was a bit sloppy in my question so here it comes again.
Rise of Mankinds adds alot to the game, with lots of new civilizations, buildings, wonders, probably some AI tweaks, resources etc etc. With all that new stuff added to the game it is certain that it uses alot more of my computer's resources. I try to play ROM with Carthersearthmap, (you can find it on the other earthmap thread here), but it crashes just after a few turns. My guess is that it is because of memory issues. It could ofc also be some kind of bug, but likely not.
My game using that type of earthmap freezes my computer. That is, just not a crash to the desktop. I have to use "alt" "ctrl" "del" and end civ from there to be able to use my comp again.
Over to my questions then :crazyeye: : What in about is the minimum spec to play a huuuge map (like carthers earthmap) with 32 preset civs and using ROM?
DodgyDave Apr 28, 2010, 09:49 AM i was playing as romans in the 31 player game, found it strange i did not run across obsidian, which made me wonder, if there is more resources missing, seems there is no pearls as well.
is this a mistake or are there a more updated map, that includes the missing resources? might be more resource types missing then these.
chueche Apr 28, 2010, 10:59 AM The Obsidian you will find on the american continent. So there i know there must be all of the ressources for Rom and And on the map.
DodgyDave Apr 29, 2010, 05:30 AM heh, well i thought obsidian would be a bit more spread out then just america...
what about pearls then, where are they located?
also in this game, how are you to survive as Egypt? i try to get the religion, but just before i get it, i am swarmed by Javelineers? having just warriers to defend myself it seems impossible???
also Desert Combat I? gives +50% defence in desert, does that also include floodplains, hills and such, that includes desert in name???
chueche Apr 29, 2010, 11:11 AM Pearls i have enough with Chinas coast. I like China to play, lots of resources.
Egypt is really a little bit strange, when the AI is play, they are often in the last place of the Powerrating. To many barbs from africa and the strategic position is for many empire important. Just like me;-)
For the resources, start the wordbuilder to change it when you like. Ghengis Khan have made the map like is was it ahead 6000years ago. You will find tabacco and potatoes only in america.
chueche Jun 26, 2010, 01:53 AM Genghis, do you plan a update your map for 2.92? I think for schrimps and other stuff?
