Baucus
Armies of Honour
Concept
Welcome to Baucus! Two armies prepare themselves. They are each led by a King, who wants the tyrant ahead of them dead for the good of this continent. Soon they will battle to find out which is the rightful monarch of this land!
The game
Before the game begins, each army must prepare itself. For this, the players each have 5 unit points and 2 item points. Each unit costs a unit point, and some special units cost one item point as well. Each item costs 1 item point. The battle map is divided into exactly 13 zones. Each army starts out in a starting region chosen by me. Turns are simoultaneous and orders for actions each turn are sent over PM. The army shall then move its units across the map to fight its enemies before finally defeating the enemy king.
Turns
Turns are taken simoultaneously. A unit can both move and attack during a turn. A unit can only attack a unit in a zone it passes through during a turn; that is, two units can move into each others' zones and still attack each other, and a horseman can move into a zone next to him, then attack, then return back to his own zone. Remember – the attack can only be performed towards a unit in the same zone as the attacking unit!
Whenever an attack is ordered, both units combat each other. And yes, if both armies order their units to attack each other, then they interfere in combat two times.
The King
The King is a free unit and can move freely around the battlefield for whatever purpose. When he is dead, you lose the game.
Units
Units have different traits. Primarily, they have Speed, which is how many zones they can cross per turn. Then they have Strength, which is their attack power when attacking other units, then they have Defense, which is their armor when defending against enemy damage. Then they have Stamina, which is much damage they can sustain before death. At last, they have Morale which determines when they are able to move into an enemy zone or not.
Combat
Many things in this game are determined through computer generated dice rolls. Most of these things are unit and item actions, but the most outstanding and obvious thing is combat. The technicalities of combat is written below.
When two units combat each other, each of them performs the following actions simoultaneously:
- Strength can't go above 5 when fighting. If the unit's Strength is above 5, then the surplus counts as an additional attack with that surplus as Strength (For example, 7 Strength means one attack with 5 Strength, then one attack with 2 Strength). The second Strength has a maximum of 5 as well (For example, 11 Strength means one attack with 5 Strength, then one attack with 5 Strength, then one attack with 1 Strength). This overlay rule works for Defense as well - but there the next Defense will only defend if attacked twice.
- The unit subtracts each of its Strengths by the defending unit's Defense. Strengths can't be below 0.
- The unit then rolls a dice and adds the result to its Strength for each attack.
- For each attack, if the unit's Strength is now above the other unit's Defense, it deals one damage to the other unit.
When a unit has damage equal to or higher than its Stamina, it dies and is removed from the battlefield.
Zones and morale
Morale is important for your movement. When a zone has units of one player, that player has control of that zone. When a zone is controlled, in order to pass through it (To attack or move, you know), a unit needs Morale. Morale is a trait that first off determines how easily other units can enter a zone a unit controls, and secondly determines how easily a unit can enter a zone another unit controls. When a unit tries to enter a zone that an enemy unit occupies, if its morale is lower than the other unit, it can't enter. Note, also, that morale is cumulative – if two units with a morale of 1 each occupies a zone, it counts as 2 morale. The same is true for two units with a morale of 1 each enters a zone; then it counts as 2 morale.
Items
Items are attached to a unit from the beginning of the game, and they have different effects and abilities depending on each one.

Also, if people are still interested, I'd be happy if I see some expression of interest. That doesn't hurt anyone and tells me if I should invest my free time into having more games running.

Angst Aug 17, 2009, 09:55 AM Just realized I made a mistake. It has now been corrected:

Daftpanzer Aug 17, 2009, 02:49 PM King Odapha stood beneath the flag of the black panther against a blue and golden sky, and looked out across the pleasant land that would soon be stained blood-red...
"There was a dream that was my father's, and of his father before him. A dream of a land united a strong, a land where one law and one word rules. A land where the common folk do not need to cower from bandits and thieves. This is my dream too. And so I swear by the gods, I will not rest until I make it so!"
The army of the Great King Odapha, ordained overlord of Baucus by will of the Panther and the Golden Sun:

Angst Aug 17, 2009, 05:18 PM Daft actually apparently read my mind and found out practically exactly what sprites I wanted to use, although his army has an unorthodox design compared to the default sprites I've made. I'll add them to the unit file I have anyways, and tag them Daftpanzer, making them recognizable if I need them again.
That said, players may use a select sprite set before the first round (Update 1) actually begins. Kinda what Daftpanzer did above. A good place to find good Fire Emblem sprites (Which is required at the moment since I want to keep a throughout style) is here (http://www.feplanet.net/sprites-archive-battle-sheets/7/class/1164). Shop around if interested.
Do know, though, that there is no guarantee for your unit colour, as I will need to make different armies recognizable.
So, yeah, I'm writing update 0 soonish, and it will include matchups and starting locations on each battlefield.
Oh, and please be inspired by Daftpanzer - stories aren't discouraged!
Terrance888 Aug 17, 2009, 06:55 PM The Wizard Harbin looked at the kneeling prince. Wizards are sworn by oath to not capture power, but... it feels so powerful. He put his hand on Prince Urt of Baucus, 'I accept your oath of Fealty.'
He quickly called for his assistants, one of which is another, lesser wizard like himself and a healer. 'Go and gather his armies, and have the Prince lead one and his deputies another two. If we win, we will become the unnamed kings of this land!'
He then sent a possession of power into the youngest of all princes, and when he stood, he swore again his oath of fealty. Then, the prince went out to gather his armies for war.

@lord_joakim I remember you asking about Fire Emblem sprites sometime before, maybe in chat :) Also I recognised the character in the title picture as being something from Fire Emblem. Thanks for the link to that site. I had been looking at the Spriters Resource (http://www.spriters-resource.com/search/?q=fire+emblem&g=1), where I got most of the sprites I used for NEB#1 and all that.
I was just playing around with those sprites, basically the first fitting ones I found, I don't want to interfere with your setup. Though I do like the female archer with the green hair :)
Angst Aug 17, 2009, 11:40 PM @Charles, stuff like that is good! Now I have a base to determine your character from (Since, yes, there will probably be some story writing stuff)
@Daftpanzer, yeah, that's true. :p Although, now your soldiers are your actual soldiers in-game. There's nothing wrong with that anyways ;) The female archer is used as well, although she has a red-bluish color scheme to fit with the rest of your army.
Diamondeye Aug 18, 2009, 12:56 AM The duke of Glens looked at the men before him; his best and most loyal men, and the men that would help him conquer a land for himself. The Knight, Sir Lohim, was kneeling in front of him, with his soldiers ranked up behind him, brandishing swords, shields and pikes. He blessed the men and sent them to the front, soon to be followed by himself. There was just one little detail he had to get in place before joining them...
As soon as they had left the room, a figure silently appeared out of the shadows. With a sepulchral voice, it said, "At your service, M'lord." The duke nodded cautiously and handed the man the pouch of golden coins. An assassin could be handy. In the game for power, anything counts.
Angst Aug 18, 2009, 02:32 AM I'd really approve if we found a sixth interested player, otherwise Diamondeye won't have anybody to fight against. :(
BananaLee Aug 18, 2009, 03:54 AM I literally haven't the time to write stories. So put me as the funny, crazy one who is slightly eccentric. ;)
Angst Aug 18, 2009, 04:46 AM Understood. :p

If you're smart, you can see your matchups (That were decided at random btw, in case you're dissappointed with your opponent or whatever). Diamondeye doesn't have a battlefield yet, since we need an opponent for him first.

Angst Aug 19, 2009, 01:40 PM Diamondeye, do you wish to replace Kulko as a player?
Terrance888 Aug 19, 2009, 04:53 PM Harbin looked at the mao, the looked to Kenbold, his apprentice.
'What do you think?' he aggressivly asked.
Kenbold shook his head. Ever since that fatefull day his master has changed. His wisdom seemed to have dissipated shortly, but in their mind quests his master seemed as sharp as ever. He looked at the map again.
"Our opponent are balanced, like us, but with a weilder of a flaming sword. We can set a base that will cover most of the map with our maelstorm attacks to the southwest, and kill the archer with a co-ordinated attack..."
"Shhh!" said Harbin. We are being watched...
He then destroyed Lord Joakim's entertainment camera.
'What the!' cried Joakim, 'Now I have no idea what is going on!'
Angst Aug 19, 2009, 05:08 PM Charles Li, you don't understand the map?

@Charles Li, you and me aren't on the same map. There are two seperate maps, it seems you are fighting Kulko in the top map, not me. You have two wizards right?
Daftpanzer Aug 19, 2009, 06:29 PM Oh I thought we were sending orders already :o What will happen in Update 0?

Nothing. I think you can send orders, actually. :p At least there's not a problem with that.

Angst Aug 20, 2009, 01:32 AM I have. :p Named regions will be posted with Update 0. No stress. The update will be up tomorrow I think. :)
Diamondeye Aug 20, 2009, 07:25 AM Yes, I'll play instead of Kulko if he hasn't got the time. I am facing Charles, then?
Angst Aug 20, 2009, 03:08 PM Yes, you must beat two Wizards. Good luck. :p
Angst Aug 21, 2009, 09:18 AM Update 0
The light coldness of the morning fog slowly lifted as the sun rose higher, now the day was truly beginning. Footsteps sounded along the forest paths, bearing marks of rhythm. When they came out of the woods, their blades shone in the bright light. These soldiers would change the day today. Fighting for their king, they would prove that he alone was worthy to rule this region. Now, all that was to do was fight... And the king came forth, holding a map in his hands. Looking at it for some time, he then gestured at his soldiers; and they began marching in different directions. Now, with his mastery of military combat, the king would slay the enemy king and rule the whole of this region!

King Odopha is a king of the rightful ones. Being the descendant of a long lineage, he has ruled his home province for two decades. He believes in honour, and in the well-being of his serfs. He has previously proven in combat, and is truly wise of life, having a lot of experience from it. His scars prove the marks he bear from the battlefield, but he has fought his way for the sake of finally uniting his nation, which he now stands ready for, only having to deal with one last enemy.
King Lee is charismatic, and has been quite a face in poor regions of the nation. Most of the time he wanders around on his own, greeting people at random. He is known as a very lusty person, getting into a number of romantic scandals in his life. His strife for power was initiated a couple of years ago, where he finally proclaimed himself king and raised an army of peasants and rogues. Dispersing of several enemies, he now stood before the fight of his destiny.

Diamond of Glens is a local duke who has aspired to have quite some influence on the aristocracy. He is a beatiful person with a gentle tongue, and has appeared to receive many friends in between the nobles. However, a darker side of him exists, him slyly keeping it a secret. Diamond is very ambitious, and will do anything to reach his goals - including murder. Now he will see if his skills and his tongue can strike down his enemy.
Prince Urt is a sturdy man, having travelled the mountains north of the region. He has seen many cultures, and as such is wise enough to sit on his rightful throne. He has always had a warm feeling for magic - it's secrets, uses, and power - and has ambitions of founding magic academies as well as learning it himself. He wants the throne, and will use great might in the shape of thundering clouds to archieve his ends.

The ocean breeze and the sound of the waves were what made him so tense; not the battle ahead of him. Looking at his band of soldiers, Odopha was proud, and he didn't stand reluctant for long. He smiled at his soldiers, then gestured at them. Bowing in front of him, they swiftly began moving through the terrain, soon to be gone. To his right, Sipha stood with her bow, and to his left, Loran with his long spear. "Come," he said, "We'll be moving towards Spider Forest. In there, we'll be able to cover ourselves for some time... I know that Lee has archers, and even though they are mere hunters, they shouldn't be underestimated."
Leaving their camp, the green army of rogues had just eated the last meal before the fight. Lee had mounted his horse, and tried balancing the sword in his hand. Swinging it a bit, he felt confident that the battle would have a result of his delight. He laughed heartily as one of his archers approached him. "Metthew, what is it?" he asked. The hunter presented him for a small document. "This is Zeot's report," Metthew said, "He has apparently arrived at his destination. Also," he continued darkly, "It appears they have a flaming sword." Lee looked at the bowman with a confused look. "What gloves does he have? We need those for our army." Metthew stared at the king as he rode further ahead, talking loudly to himself.

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/2608/diamvscharles.png
Lohim rode towards the camp site; having just scouted the area, he had mapped out most landmarks and prepared the paper for his duke. Entering the camp, he found his king standing in his fine, white dress. "Good day, my liege," he said, bowing for the young duke. Diamond smiled at his adversary. "You have done well, friend," he said, "I have another task for you." After receiving orders, Lohim rode out again, this time to locate the enemy. Riding on the southern great plains, he felt the wind suddenly change direction. He halted his horse, it obviously being nervous. Something was wrong. A loud crack thundered throughout the sky, rain began falling, and he saw lightning against lightning smite and scar the soil around him. He turned the horse and tried riding for the woods; but a loud blast and a flash ran through him; then an intense pain. He felt his mount give in; it fell, and he fell of it as well, finding himself in a small dam. He made his way out, then laid there for a moment, in pain; but he would wait the storm out. He had survived the magic attack.
"The spell was succesful," Harbin said to prince Urt. Urt smiled, sure that one enemy was disposed of. "Good job, my friend," Urt said, then looked at the table ahead of him, the map showing the whole of the region. "I was really sad to learn that Lohim had joined sides with that snake duke of Glens," Urt said darkly, "He was a fine man, and a brave adventurer. May his soul travel in peace." Harbin was silent, but nod, then walked out of the field tent. Soon they would begin the assault as well; surely soon they would conquer the whole of the area. He hoped for the army's healer to return safely from his trip to the southern harbours.

Angst Aug 23, 2009, 11:16 AM As Noticed For All Players
I'm not sure that everyone has understood the combat system, and I forgot to post something that is now obviously important to say. This isn't personal, it's probably me who wasn't clear. :)
1) No Conditional Orders
And by Conditional Orders, I mean no orders fitting the "If X happens, then do Y" pattern. It's just too problematic to deal with. Just try to figure this out:
Player 1 orders: My spearman moves north if Player 2's knight doesn't move anywhere. If Player 2's knight moves, don't move the spearman.
Player 2 orders: My knight moves north if Player 1's spearman doesn't move anywhere. If Player 1's spearman moves, don't move the knight.
Therefore, orders shall always be consistent and inquestionable. I'm really sorry if it ruins anything, but my brain can't take it if I have to solve loops. All orders are bound to follow this pattern:
"Move the knight north, then attack the spearman."
2) Combat
I've already been asked to have archers and units attack an area to hit enemy units... While raining arrows over an area if units move into it seems logical in the real world, in this game, it doesn't compute. In order to attack a unit, one must have the attacking unit attack the zone the defending unit is in when you issue an order. That means, you can't range attack (archery, duh) the empty grasslands in case that the enemy spearman will enter it. In order to shoot that spearman, move into the grassland and attack the square he's in. Or, perhaps more clarified:
Battle Map
[ Zone ] [ Zone ] [ Zone ]
Units
[ Man ] [ Zone ] [ Archer ]
Attack
[ Man ]<-[ Archer ]<-[ Zone ]
Red colour indicates attack, blue indicates movement. Note that the attack will be rolle regardless of where the Man moves to during the same turn. I think I have made myself understood now. :)
3) Assassins
I have been horrifyingly unclear with the assassins, and I'll update it with the next round. No worries. I'll explain them for a bit now:
Invisibility - this is what I'll codename their inherent ability for now - as they can't be seen. Now, how to spot him? The assassin is invisible until either he attacks himself, or he ends a turn in the same zone another unit ends a turn. This will not cause combat though, as no units ordered it (And can't due to the combat rules you know). Also, when discovered at any point, they'll not be invisible again for the rest of the game.
Can't defend - this might be quite unclear as well. The thing is, when a unit enters combat, each unit will attemp to attack each other. Assassins roll for defense when they attack another unit - but when attacked, they will always recieve damage.
I think that was what I wanted to say. Any more questions anyone?
(Also, I'd like to add that the orders deadline has been extended to Tuesday in case anybody would want to revise their orders. It's my fault, sorry. Of course, if I get all orders in before then, I'll update.)
Please post in this thread if you want to stick with the orders you sent for turn 2. :)
Shadowbound Aug 23, 2009, 03:34 PM Lurker Comment: If Kings ignore morale when attacking, do any units accompanying them when they move into a zone do the same?
Angst Aug 23, 2009, 03:51 PM Well... No. But the King's morale stacks with the unit, helping the unit to enter the zone. Just like the regular morale stack. :)
(Good to know you're lurking Shadowbound. :))
Shadowbound Aug 23, 2009, 04:48 PM If it did, that'd be an interesting incentive to use Kings on the front line.
Daftpanzer Aug 23, 2009, 05:30 PM @lord_joakim, I think I understand :) I have no revisions or additions to make from our PM exchange.

The game is still developing. I'd be interested in any suggestions at all, so I'll consider this. It makes sense - I, myself, would rather have the king as a tool you could use, as he is somewhat powerful, but it is hazardous to do, and the hazard doesn't make up for his strength. I'll think about adding that ability.
My hesitation grounds in that I don't know whether adding too much abilities on a unit as central as a king would make him too playing style-specific - which he would be if I had made him Mounted (He rides a horse, so duh, but I didn't want him to count as cavalry. Spearmen rarely are epic to die against, Sparta aside), or if I made him too powerful, forcing the player to use him for profit. So I'm still hesitant. At least I won't make him another assassin.

Good, good. :)
Terrance888 Aug 23, 2009, 06:21 PM I just hope no one makes a Mithril Shield/Flaming sword King with a faithful healer!
Angst Aug 25, 2009, 04:58 PM I just did a mistake. Was waiting for Charles' orders until I discovered he sent them first. My bad.
Update tomorrow.
Daftpanzer Sep 03, 2009, 05:41 PM Since I have no moral authority to ask/nag for updates, I was wondering if anyone here would like to do it on my behalf?
Terrance888 Sep 03, 2009, 05:49 PM I think that Lord_Joakim should nag for an update... I vote for him...
Opps... My bad.

Angst Sep 04, 2009, 01:26 AM Please don't worry, it's just a setback, and it is not lack of interest that causes me to not have time to post it, it's lack of time itself, I need to give up on some rl.
Anyways, expect it to be updated during this weekend - either tomorrow or Sunday, today I have a party to attend to.

Watching the ground ahead of him, Tadus was careful with each and every step; he knew this area. And he knew that there were many places to hide. Somewhere the assassin had to hide. Walking through the tall meadow grass, he scouted in the distance. Behind him, Daymien slowly followed, crouching in the cover of the thick vegetation. "Is it safe?" Daymien asked. "I think so," Tadus said, turning his head at a big oak down by a creek, "I suppose we can move forward. Dangit, that assassin is freaking me out. He has probably been watching us for hours." "I hope not," Daymien said, frightened, while looking behind his back.
"Oi, mate," a deep voice growled from in behind a tree, hollowly echoing throughout the grove, "When are we getting out of this stupid forest?" Rai, a local lumberjack, held his heavy axe in his hand while dragging himself through the bushes. Ahead of him, another large man balanced a battle axe in his hand. "Don't blame me," Metage said, "I never wanted to be a lumberjack. It was you who dragged me into this." They continually growled at each other before finally reaching a clearing; and before them, their king waited. Lee smiled at them, and they fell silent, following him into Iron Point.

Waking up at daylight's first break, Lohim felt dizzy. He had still not fully recovered from the attack the day before, but he had to move onwards. If he didn't find the mages soon, they would probably spot him again and land their second strike. Rising, he began walking towards the Spider Forest - he had to take cover before moving on.
He concentrated. Harbin was bended over a book inside his tent. Some of these texts were hard to interpret - the ancient writings of the old archmages weren't always the clearest - and it was considered heresy to copy these texts. He had to stick with this. Only the fewest magicians were able to use these spells. Mesmerizing to himself, he slowly felt the upcoming presence of clouds at the desired location - as he suddenly felt something was wrong. He heard a low shuffling just outside the tent. He laid the book down beside him and took his trustworthy staff, then slowly walked towards the entrance - and suddenly the whistling of steel could be heard as a sword cut through the tent linen, cutting into Harbin's shoulder. Enraged, he cursed and shouted an ancient word, blasting a circle of fire outwards through the tent. When he came to his senses, the attacker was gone. Who could it be? He had to report to his king... At least before the attacker returned. Moving through the camp hastily, his vision was still blurred from the pain. Not even a potent magician like himself could stand this; how despicable! However, he noticed hands and voices around him, suddenly realizing he was being carried by a couple of men. "Who are you," he muttered. "Master Harbin," a young voice answered, "The king has been attacked. We have to have a tactical meeting about this."
Harbin was frightened. Were these attackers the same person? Was the enemy already this close?

ORDERS ARE DUE THIS SUNDAY.
Yes, three days. If you send orders tomorrow, there will be an update the day after tomorrow, though, so hurry up. :p
Angst Sep 10, 2009, 02:50 PM Bonus Bonus Bonus!
Today, I got a great idea. I thought - what did the winners of these games actually get beside the honour of being victorious? You don't know either? Well, I had already planned to add more units whenever I begin a new round. So, look at the below paragraph.
The Amazing Price for Being A Winner
After you have defeated your opponent, I will primarily salute you, somehow. Then, you will get to choose a unit to be included in the next version of Baucus! All players will be able to buy that unit of course. I want anybody to be able to join in whenever they feel like it. I will send you a PM containing this form:
Unit Idea:
Desired Unit Name:
Description & Concept:
And then, of course, you will fill it out and reply with the complete formula. An example could be this, from the Wizard :
Unit Idea: A powerful (item unit?) spellcaster even stronger than a regular Mage.
Desired Unit Name: Wizard
Description & Concept: The Wizard should be much more powerful, but more focused on large-scale spells. Conceptually, a Wizard is like Gandalf while a Mage is the fireball evoker. The Wizard is of course older and much wiser.
Then I'll take the unit design into consideration. I have the authority to veto unit ideas though - this is a medieval fantasy setting, no space marines allowed. But don't feel scared to ask just to be turned down. Anything is wishable, most is includable. :)
All when the time comes, of course. ;)
Terrance888 Sep 10, 2009, 03:02 PM Urt whirled aside as a shadow few at him from the trees. It grasped his cloak and stabbed at his heart, but he cleaved the blade in two. Then he cut the cloak of... it was Mali the assassin! He cried as his only cover few off, and dissapeared into the woods again, leaving urt with nothing but a distinct feeling as the woods discuss the ungrateful sneaky man in their midst.
------------------------
Dietrich gasped as he saw Harbin's wound. It had cleaved deep into the side of the shoulderblade, barely missing an artery, but slicing between the musles. He took a flask out, and put one of the spider-heads he collected into a mortar and crushed it. He then washed it out but for the last drop.
He then took a single comb of honey and placed the venom inside. When it turned purple he crushed that again and washed again, this time finishing with a single drop of his flask.
As it turned deep purple he washed it into the wound. It would make it heal easier but often causes pain, sometimes even greater than the pain it numbs. He hopes that the virture of the Spider Bee's honeycomb will nuetralize the venom, making it safer... but as always, with nature, you can never be sure.
Daftpanzer Sep 10, 2009, 03:48 PM Coolness! Orders incoming!
-edit-
King Odapha addresses his army...
The time has come. Noble warriors, let all the universe see the courage in our hearts. For we of noble blood, there can be no life without peace and justice. So, onwards! Have no fear, and hold nothing back. To victory!
BananaLee Sep 10, 2009, 08:41 PM I'll be honest, even I've forgotten where the assassin is :p
BananaLee Sep 24, 2009, 03:40 PM The aliens! The aliens have taken him!
