View Full Version : Can't add Unit Formations to Civilization IV Gold Edition?

Hello there.

I recently purchased Civilization IV Gold Edition from Walmart.
I heard it was possible to modify the game.

I wanted to try this, so I downloaded a single xml modifing component:
Unit Formations

I put it in and tried to load the game and I got a message stating that the two xml files in CusomAssets from that modification did not match the Schema/DDS (what?).
It said it was expecting something and it found a different line there.

I did not add/change/delete any other files other than those two to add Unit Formations to my game.
It said it had a LoadXML error in those files and once I got past those couple errors, the game loaded. I went to try a map to see if it worked, and once it generated it, there were no units at all, and it said I was defeated and played 00:00 time.

I also tried the BTS version of those files to no luck, the same as the original version.

I removed the files from my game and loaded again to find it working like it should, but I would like to use the Unit Formations modification.

Can you help me?

Welcome to CFC :).

The unitFormations.xml was from what version? Normal Civ ("Vanilla") or from Warlords? And did you put it in the right custom assets folder (there's one for every version)?

I thank you. :)

Vanilla Civilization IV, I don't plan to ever play Warlords anyway.
I run Civilization 1.61.

I tried both versions of Unit Formations, I first tried the normal one and then a little bit later I tried the [bts] version (both gave the same errors, and I removed them from my game, I'll be happy to put them back so I can show you the errors).

And I put the Unit Formations in C:/Users/XANA/Documents/My Games/CustomAssets/xml/units and in my other user's Document folder in the same place.

I Believe it should be in
C:/Users/XANA/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/CustomAssets/xml/units if you have it.

...Oh yes that's right.

Though I installed to a non default place and I guess my correct path for the game files should be:
"C:/Users/XANA/Documents/My Games/IV/CustomAssets/units".

I installed my game to "E:/Civilization/IV" (E is my Video Game Partition), because I could not stand having to give administrative permission every time to save and have to run the game in my admin account.

What I don't like is how snippy my game is about those files from Unit Formations, it gave all sorts of Schema/DDS errors and loadXML messages, while loading and when generating a map to play single player in.
I'll add those files back to my game in a little bit, so I can give the actual error messages.

You should first install the latest patch for civ ;).
They sometimes change things in the XML.

Really?
There is a new patch out?

I wonder why Civilization IV has not prompted me to install it yet....

EDIT =
I downloaded it but (probably due to my not installing it in the default location) it told me it could not find any CivIV game on my computer.n I c

EDIT #2 =
I went and installed CivilizationIV Gold Edition to another computer I have, in the default location, and then I copied over the installer for the patch and ran it there, it still said that it couldn't find CivIV on there.

(maybe it is cause CivIV Gold Edition might install to somewhere different than the patcher is expecting, I don't know)

I'm not sure what else to try now.

(maybe it is cause CivIV Gold Edition might install to somewhere different than the patcher is expecting, I don't know)No, the patcher should still work, as the path is stored in the registry...

I think it rather means you've got the wrong patch - for example the latest Beyond the Sword patch, which - obviously - won't find it on your PC. You want this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6183) and this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6184).

By the way, why don't you want to play Warlords instead of vanilla? Because the Warlords version (and by extension the BtS version even more) is plain better, having more bugfixes in etc.

Cheers, LT.

I'm not saying I won't play it, I'm just saying that I probably wont (since no one I know plays Warlords and I only play Multiplayer with one person).

But, the thing is, that is where I got those two patches, and I ran them on two seperate computers (one with the default location for my game, and the one with my custom location).
Those were the patches I downloaded, and they both gave me the same error message (can't find Civilization IV).

I would really like to get this to work. If I'm going to play against one of my friends (and hopefully beat him and everyone else in the game), I want to atleast have something that looks like an army (If I'm going to be the Emperor of the World in that Multiplayer game, I want to make my army look intimiding rather than just one unit and whole bunch of others inside of it). :D
