View Full Version : DemoGame IV Settings
Lord Civius Aug 20, 2009, 02:01 PM While we are waiting for the forums perhaps we should begin discussing the game settngs.
Platform? Civ4 BTS
Patch? I have updated to 3.19
Here are a few of the Game Settings to discuss.
World Size
Map type
Sea Level
Climate
Standard Resources?
Game Speed
Barbarians
Unrestricted Leader?
Random Civilization?
# of Civilizations (ours included)
We can discuss the more advanced settings after we've ironed these out. I say we allow a few days for discussion and begin polling if the forums are up by then.
civver_764 Aug 20, 2009, 02:11 PM All good except Unrestricted Leader. If we're doing a random civ then the Random leader thing can really screw us. I only have good experiences with it when I hand pick the leader.
Vandal Warlord Aug 21, 2009, 01:46 PM I like Random Civ, but it makes little difference to me on the other settings.
civplayah Aug 21, 2009, 05:36 PM I would rather have Random Civ. That way we don't have to go through all the hassle of voting for one, followed by a runoff if necessary.
Lord Civius Aug 21, 2009, 09:02 PM I like the idea of a random civ and the leader being chosen through our first election. Let citizens that wish to be our first leader choose a civ leader and create a platform for our first government.
NKVD Aug 22, 2009, 08:10 AM i always play marathon! cant understand why people doesnt love that!
I only hope for marathon or at least Epic. big map

Problem with marathon and epic maps is that the game goes on so long that you'll have a lot of trouble keeping enough people to keep things going. Remember how much the previous demogames had trouble with participation, you want things easier, not harder! :)

I agree with IamJohn. We would need to play 30 turns per session on marathon. Normal speed with 10 turns/session keeps a good pace. Even on normal Dgames can last 6 months to a year.
NKVD Aug 25, 2009, 07:12 AM you just have to play twice as much turns between play sessions...! whats the deal ?
Lord Civius Aug 25, 2009, 06:47 PM Citizens of the game are elected to positions in the government and they give their instructions (to the designated player) before each turn session. It would be very difficult to give instructions for thirty turns. It would get very confusing and information heavy.

no marathon only allows for more military movement...it takes still 3x more times for a worker to build a farm or a road and still 3x more turns to build a granary. I really dont see where the game would take more time as the player who will play the game will only press the enter key maybe twice as much. it will take him maybe 25 minutes to play the session instead of 12 minutes...it wont be longer for us reading the session and what happened. really...
Lord Civius Aug 26, 2009, 02:31 PM I stand corrected  I haven't played marathon in forever and forgot the game was balanced, but just takes more turns. With that I guess it will be up to the citizenry to decide. Once we have our forums up we can begin polling the game settings.
Vandal Warlord Aug 26, 2009, 03:25 PM Marathon speed would be great for RP too.
civver_764 Aug 27, 2009, 02:26 PM Marathon speed would be great for RP too.
This. Normal moves way too fast for this type of game.
NKVD Aug 28, 2009, 10:38 AM yeah what i love about marathon is you can move a big army across the world and when you'll get there it wont be obsolete.
IamJohn Aug 29, 2009, 08:52 PM Of course by the time you finally get it built it might be. :p
NKVD Aug 30, 2009, 08:04 AM Of course by the time you finally get it built it might be. :p
no because tech takes also twice as much to get researched....:p
ice2k4 Sep 02, 2009, 02:13 PM Yes, but you also forget that officials have to post instructions for 30 turns instead of 15. Generally, build queues or worker actions aren't badly affected by this, however, troop movements, especially in times of war are
30 turns instead of 15 turns allows a lot more random variables to occur in a turnset, such as enemy troops moving where we did not expect them, discovering more fertile land when settling a city, or even a random event happening since it is BTS.
I'd vote for a large map, normal or epic speed and this rest the default settings (although as much as I don't like playing random personalities and random leader, they do sound quite tempting for the dg)
NKVD Sep 02, 2009, 04:41 PM epic is ok with me
last time i played normal or faster was with Civ 3 !
kcd_swede Sep 07, 2009, 08:33 AM I'd go for Normal or Epic. However, if you scale the turnsets to the gamespeed, it probably doesn't matter very much. Except the slower gamespeed is, the more microdecisions are left to be made solely by the turnset player (and hence less of democracy game feel, if I understand how this works).
civplayah Sep 07, 2009, 10:34 AM I wouldn't go with normal. I don't think that would last long enough.
Bowsling Sep 07, 2009, 05:26 PM Yeah, I agree with epic. also, we should have the citizens chose our civilization, it would be generally better.
civplayah Sep 08, 2009, 03:10 PM I agree.
Bowsling Sep 10, 2009, 07:23 PM So should we have a poll for the civilization? or should we just let the computer decide?
NKVD Sep 11, 2009, 09:28 PM So should we have a poll for the civilization? or should we just let the computer decide?
russia or random...
I mean russia would be fun cause we could use a lot of jokes call us comrade, etc. but thats just me... :)
Bowsling Sep 12, 2009, 06:44 AM well, that would be a poll. Actually, come to think about it, we can have random as a poll option.
Lord Civius Sep 12, 2009, 10:07 AM I've never played the Russians in a Dgame before, I like the RP possibilities.
Draknith Oct 01, 2009, 03:28 PM Why not be the Romans, and my character's name can be Biggus Dikkus.
civplayah Oct 01, 2009, 04:05 PM Okay, eww. But, I'm fine with anything. Every civ has their strengths and weaknesses.
Vandal Warlord Oct 01, 2009, 06:30 PM Thanks for that mental image Draknith....:cringe::eek::cringe:
I would be fine with many civilizations.
Shnipah Oct 13, 2009, 07:53 AM These settings all sound good to me,
I hope to understand them more eventually after playing since I'm completely new XD
SunTzuWarrior Nov 08, 2009, 08:24 AM I say marathon, epic, and we vote for civ...my personal preference is Cyrus.
civplayah Nov 08, 2009, 06:05 PM Cyrus? I like Alexander. Or Joao II.
Lord Civius Nov 08, 2009, 06:24 PM We were discussing the Russians before and Catherine is a strong leader in advanced difficulty games. I am willing to play with any civ or leader though.
grant2004 Nov 08, 2009, 07:29 PM I like the idea of an Epic game, I agree that Marathon might be too much, when it comes to figuring out orders for military units in wartime, or settlement options early game. That said it is possible for a D.P. to end a session early when a significant event has occurred and he feels that more orders are necessary. However we wouldn't want that to happen too frequently, playing a Marathon game 5 turns at a time would drive a few of us off the deep end.
I'd prefer a random civ with a selected leader. I think that allows us the fun of something unexpected, while not allowing us to be really screwed over from the start. Any civ is playable, if a decent leader is selected.
