Hello dear fellow democrats.

I'm an Ambassodor from the lovely Land of Demogyptica.

It's a german Civ III democracy game that has started not so long ago and i am here to built up the links between our Nations.

We are a small Community of about 30 members wich form the parliament.

Right now we are voting for our second Gouvernment and are about to to continue our game.

Please feel invited to visit our Site but be warned. the language there is german. So if you have questions about Demogyptica please ask me.

Darekill Ambassador of Demogyptica

I am happy to welcome the representant of your fine nation in our world.
The Fanatikan populace is greeting you with a hope for good relations between our nations. As you surely noticed, the Fanatikan people have a german trait in the game, so i guess maybe people will also come over to you to ask for translations or ideas for german-sounding names.

I also hope we will soon meet at the UN, as i applied for the job of representing Fanatika there.

What you really should do is visit our RPG game. This is also a nice extra "feature" we added to the plain civ3 game, and as you see that part of our game is really exploding!

So feel free to look around and "habe spass!".

"Fellow Democrats"?

I love Democracy and Republics... but I'm a Republican and proud of it (the US is technically a Republic not a Democracy anyway) ... not that it has much baring in Demogames.

Anyway... We welcome you, and look forward to our future relations.

My thoughts exactly.

Greetings, Ambassador. I am Lord Master Zarn of the Jedi Knights and the Domestic Leader of Fanatika (I love saying this). I hope that Demogyptica will prosper throughout time.

Greetings, Ambassador Darekill.

I am Padma, Earl of Mara and Kultis, Culture Leader of Fanatika. I invite you to come visit our fair cities and bask in their culture. Or I would if we had any culture buildings. ;) But it is still early in the life of our civilization, and priorities are not yet on happiness.

I echo the Great Disorganizer when I say you should visit our RPG forum. This is where the true, grass-roots culture is being shaped.

Hi,
thank you for your warm welcome.

I've already been to the RPG-Section and can see that you really make alot to fill this game with life.

I'm sorry that up till now i was not able to take part of your social life there but i didn't have the time to do it. Maybe that'l change.

I'm also sorry for the "democrats" mistake i made. I just wanted to express that we have the common intrest in playing a democracy game.

People who support a democracy are called "Demokraten" in german which translates to democrats. It has nothing to do with a party membership. That's why i gooved this one....

I've seen that the tribe that you choose to play is the german one. How did this come to pass? You must know that we in germany do not realy like to play this tribe. (Of course we did at first but later on we prefered others.)

If you want to have some things translated, i can help. Just ask.

Greetings for demogyptica
Darekill

@ Darekill -- How did we choose the german people? by a poll. That's how most everything gets done around here! hehehehe But yes, it is true. We played the persians on our last game and I think that was also choosen by polls (not sure, I hadn't arrived in this world yet). I don't know what culture we shall play next, who knows, maybe the egyptians, or the romans.

@Arne-- That's a great city! surrounded by forrests, a river. Quite nice! Take a look around our Cartographic department, there you shall find all types of papyrus sheets with our maps of the known world.

@ Ehecatl Atzin

I was just curious, of course you had a poll i'd expected that. But what were the reasons that made the decision in favor of the german tribe

@Stuck_As_a_Mac
I gues Arne took the Buildings from the game Pharao and pu them in a screenshot from Civ III i don'T think that it is an actual patch ;)

Actually it is not a patch nor a mod. But if 1.29f(ger) will ship, it is possible to make a egyptian mod with this and many other buildings and graphical changes in it. May be I'll do it, but may be not too.

Hello neutral leader.

Welcome in this embassy. O.K. since you've requested a correction i'll do so:

Your text:

Correctet Version:
Hallo! Wie geht's Herr Darekill? (better : Hallo wie gehts dir Darekill? Herr Darekill is correct but much to formal.)

(this is also correct but way to formal, i'd say Entschuldigung.)

I've no problems with your german as long as i get your message and this is the case so there's no need for excuses. I'd like to welcome you as the Ambassador of your country in Demogyptica. You can always ask and if i can i'll answer you. I'm lokking forward to work with you too. I'll try to do my best in correcting you german but i'm not perfect...

By the way if you have the time to correct my misstakes, feel free to do it. I've to improve my english, you know?

Just one, small, nit-picky request.

Please translate, in the post, any non-English text. I believe (and I am sure the mods will correct me if I am mistaken) that this site's rules stipulate that, as it is an English language site. I know I have seen mods point this out in other threads on these forums.

(Personally, I had no trouble with these last messages in German, as I speak it moderately well myself, but many readers are not so fortunate.)

Ah yes i see, i've got a car.
but
I have to learn some more english.

Dieses? Dieses braucht nicht Berichtigung! Sie sind sehr gut.

I try to give my best ;)

danke sehr viel (thank you very much? that would be better vielen Dank though many thanks would sound funny in english....), das wird meiner Deutsch hilfen grosslich (es wird mein Deutsch stark verbessern--> it will (greatly) improve my german (very much) I don't know what would fit the meaning better, so i put the options in brackets.

Was geschehen (geschieht) in Demogyptica?

What happens in Demogyptica?

Right now we are just about to elect a new gouvernment.

deh-mo-jip-tik-a oder deh-mü-jip-tik-a?

How do you spell the Name?

Äh... here youve got me. It's not so easy to get that done.
Demo is easy just like democracy
tika is also easy it sounds like Tequilla
without the lla part.
but how do to describe the gy g is the g in get and the y is like the german sound of ü th u with the dots above, the Umlaut.

I understand (the) most of your corrections but not those:

vergeben sie mir (i notice you use the dative case instead of the accusative)
uh i was never tjhe grammar man you know. I can tell you that this sounds german but i can't tell you why.

The english phrases "Excuse me" or "pardon me" can be translated to
Entschuldigen sie mich or
Vergeben sie mir or
Entschuldigen sie mich bitte or
Verzeihen sie mir or
..... a lot more sentences with different words but the same meaning can be thoght of.

deshalb ist mein Deutsch nicht so gut (when do you use mein rather than meiner?)

Thats why my german isn't that good.

Oh, i see in both cases it translates to my. I canT' exactly tell you, i just don't know. Maybe this would be something to ask your german-teacher?

Yes because the more personel "du is used in Messageboards. If we would meet each other in real life it woud depend on the circumstances wether we would use the informel "Du" or the more official "Sie". Generally you make no mistake by using the "Sie" form, but if i use the "du" you can be sure that you can use it too. If you insist on the "Sie" it would mean that you wish to keep the contact in a very distant an official way and have no intetion however to get a closer mor friendly contact.

"Sie" is for persons that have a professionell buissiness contact.

"Du" is for penpals, chitchat, or for having a drink together.

p.s. what is the url of the demogyptica forum? they tell me i need to go set up an embassy.

No i just missed the word pronounciation...
You are right!
Aussprechen --> to pronounce
Buchstabieren --> to spell

Maybe this would be something to ask your german-teacher? (occupations are not hyphenated in english)

can you give me an example for this?

If we would meet each other in real life (this isnt really wrong, per se, but sounds awkward. better would be "if we were to meet each other in real life"

This shows the german origin of me. I just translated the german:
Wenn wir uns im wahren Leben treffen würden.
which just did not do!

Yes most of them typos. Concentration is a virtue but i guess i have to do without it. ;)

Thank you, but even typos deserve to be corrected. By the way i do some misspellings in german too, i never was good in spelling ;)

there. that was really that bad, huh? as for examples, im not sure what you mean but:
german teacher not german-teacher
quantum physicist not quantum-physicist
islamic scholar not islamic-scholar
is that what you mean?

Welcome, Darekill and Arne, to Fanatika. I am an American who doesn't really like playing the American tribe in my games. Darekill, I believe the German tribe won the selection poll here because of not only the scientific trait (a key trait in our last game) but because of the Panzer UU. Straight away, it's a great piece of equipment. The military trait was seen as helpful also at this level. BTW, what level are you playing at?

I lived in Germany many years ago, close to Trier. I love the German country-side. I would return in a heart beat if possible.

Arne, thank you for the picture. It is beautiful. If the Art Museum were not closed at this time, I would surely hang it there. Again, welcome.

Hello,
@ cyc
Thank, you for the answer to my qustion.
Now i understand your reasons for taking thee german trib.
Most of our people hre beliv that it is more usefull to have the U.U. sooner because at the time where the Panzer arrives the game is either lost or won.

We likee to change the government form from time to time so religios was almost a must. Since the egytian tribe won the last polls as a tribee of the month in our Forum, we choose them as the tribe to play our demogame with.

As for you:

I'll try to translate that.

Yes your corrections are always welcome. As for the teaching, i may not be a real teacher but i can be for you as much of a german teacher as you can be an english teacher to me. (see, i learn!) ;)

btw. you can say you to me!
(this is a common joke for german pupils trying to learn english and translating the german sentence Sie können du zu mir sagen (Sie dürfen mich duzen) which makes absolutely no sense in english ;)

danke. well, and i thought i felt stupid when i posted that! oh well, i suppose a student has to have a dismal failure once in a while.

- the idiomatic expression is different i see

Ich stehe in Deiner (Ihrer) Schuld. - i wonder why in english i am in your debt but in german i stand in it?

thanks for the joke, cultural notes are always welcome! in return, heres a good australian joke that uses a play-on-words of english slang (which is linguistically pretty interesting):
In a remote farming station in Western Australia, a call comes in from a ranger on the radio. "Bruce, I've got a problem - I was piling through the bush when the Landcruiser hit a pig. Damn thing is half alive and stuck in the bullbars and the jeep won't move."
"Can you pull it free?"
"No, it is thrashing round and squealing too much"
The station attendant had a think.
"Okay, tell you what, pull out the .303 and shoot it in the back of the head, pull it out when it is dead. Let me know how you get on"
"Right oh".
Minutes later, after no further radios, that station attendant radios again
"Are you still having trouble with the pig? How'd ya go?"
"No problems with the pig, it is his damn motorbike - it's still trapped under the jeep."
