16th century Renaissance Europe


I have modified or at least resized my previously made Russian, English and Spanish Renaissance units, so I consider the old ones obsolete.

Also, I have made a bunch of additional units to imperator1961`s Swedish and Italian packs.

Do you plan to expand this pack a little? To have a little more cavalry for Sweden for instance, or do you consider it covered by Imperator?

The old 1550 Russian Pikeman historically suits better for 17th century, but he needs to be resized.

Btw, Sandris, you shouldn't scrap your older units. I found that there were some units in your former English Renaissance pack that are still very useful. The English targeteer makes an excellent generic renaissance swordsman, the light horseman is too nice to be forgotten as well. I guess these units deserve to stay in your library. :)

Well, those units, which were not remade (resized) could be considered as still useful, but I will modify English Targeter a little and resize him as well.

That was exactly what I was looking for.

For me it would be a bit better, if you build German units, but not Habsburgian.
Because Landsknechte (the german plural of landsknecht) weren´t the only German units. They were a minority of the whole German units.

The wish from ares for flemish units, can i agree, naturally only if you find time.

(I build a 30-years war scenario, and your units are amazing for it, and sorry for my terrible english)

It would probably help if you provide reference pictures for the German units you think are missing.

Not yet. for the moment, Sandris is very busy with the main civiizations lines: England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Sweden.
I don't know what he will do after that, but I think you shouldn't expect other civs until these ones are finished.

Don't they clash with the already numerous units from Imperator ? he do already a lot for 17-19 centuries.

They overlap a bit.

But not completly: Imperator does more variety but with smaller period of time.

For instance, he did Savoy, Naples, Papal States, Venetia, while Sandris is doing only "Italy".

But while Sandris makes unit for Bronze Age (early / late), Iron age (early, lage), Dark ages, Middle ages (early, high late), 1550, 1650, 1700, 1750, 1790, 1812...
Imperator focused on 16th, 17th, 18th.

In fact, Sandris is very kind to try to match the needs of my own mod when he does new pack (although he always goes even beyond).

Although I like Imperator's units, I'd rather use only the units from Sandris to have more consistency. The only units of Imperator I planned to use are the artillery.

But this is because I'm making an epic mod. For someone who would like to focus on Europe, Imperator will bring additional units, such as Scotland for instance, or more than one German states.

I see them more as complementing each other than competiting.

At the turn of the century, circa 1700, you could also be interested by the Great Northern War. You'll need some Russians for this.

Generic civ-colored units will be made too, but will be limited to the main unit types (foot attack/defence, mounted attack/defence etc).

Yep, Sandris is making more time period, but for "generic" Italians, while Imperator is making more varied countries.

They complement each other very well.

@ Edil, you post a picture with "Venetia - sea fusiliers, first marines of history".

The uniforms on that picture are clearly not medieval :p

It's a positive feedback loop.

Sandris makes nice units. I like it, I want more. So I set up my webpage with all the unit lines for the main civilizations with many period, and reference pictures when I can find them. So Sandris makes more units, and he tries to fill the gaps for my mod. It's a long hard work. But as I like it a lot, I make a special version of SBB to automate the generation of multiple storyboards. So he makes more units. Now, I'm too limited by the current civIII engine... and I make the expanded game to support evolutive civ and try to have more than 4 eras...

2. Pikeman or gaffman
3 Swordman with a pistol
4. Crossbowman
5. grenadier (grenade thrower with a pistol) the grenades are basically small cannonballs with a fuse.
6. A swordsman throwing Molotov Cocktails
7. Captain sword and pistol or a bandalior of pistols drawing and firing them.

I think that would give plenty of variety for units. I will post some pictures later from Osprey books for your reference.

Both the marines and the Cossacks look very interesting. I a going to have to edit my Pirate scenario to add in European Powers marines.

Very cool. Not entirely sure from just the one preview, but the cap on the 1750 British marine looks like it could be used for a 7YW Prussian fusilier as well?

Ares, due to your multiple requests for generic units they will be made too, but I would like to know what color should I give to cuffs and collars (white, red, yellow...) ? :)

Wouldn't it be best to give him a blue coat (most common uniform colour, and he is a marine...) with civ coloured cuffs and collar? Would probably be better than giving him a civ coloured coat, as I'm sure no marine in history would ever be caught in a pink or purple coat...

Of course, I'm assuming that you were planing on using civ colours...

True, however most of those countries also used blue uniforms for at least some branches of their military, especially the navy, and marines in many cases were part of the navy and not the army.

But of course, that is just my opinion, bearing in mind that this would be a generic unit and not strictly historical like the rest.

@ Sandris: Thank you for considering my request. :) I just need some generic units for those countries you haven't covered so far (Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Greece). I think that the idea with the blue coat isn't too bad, but it would be ok to have a civ colored unit with white or red cuffs and collars as well. I'll just leave it to you. ;)

I second the request for generic units. They would prove useful in several scenarios currently in some stage of creation. ;)

Sandris is probably just taking a break... everyone needs one sooner or later. Hope the break doesn't last forever though. And hope everything is okay with him.

Sandris sent me some news. He is personnally fine, but has some RL issues that make him busy at the moment.

But he hopes to see this solved soon, to finish the current pack and make new packs.

In the meantime, he said he appreciate our concern for him and thanks us for that.

Thanks for these very nice units. Since a long long time, I was in search for renaissance style light cavalry, hvy cavalry etc... With ur upload I was able to complete in my mod the renaissance pack unit, and medieval horse arbalest! Thank u very much!
