View Full Version : 16th century Renaissance Europe
Sandris Aug 21, 2009, 12:03 PM 16th century Renaissance Europe
I have modified or at least resized my previously made Russian, English and Spanish Renaissance units, so I consider the old ones obsolete.
Also, I have made a bunch of additional units to imperator1961`s Swedish and Italian packs.

Most Excellent
Steph Aug 21, 2009, 12:28 PM Great!!!
A small remark... You forgot Greek units :p
Do you plan to expand this pack a little? To have a little more cavalry for Sweden for instance, or do you consider it covered by Imperator?
Ozymandias Aug 21, 2009, 12:40 PM   Your usual astonishing work. Question re: the brightly multicolored German uniforms - are these meant to be Landsknecht?
Best,
Oz
Steph Aug 21, 2009, 12:55 PM Yep, the Germans are Landsknecht. Very well done one BTW.
I've seen that the old 1650 Russian pikeman is now a 1550, and the old 1550 has disappear?
Cimbri Aug 21, 2009, 01:01 PM Holy heck! What a sweet pack, Sandris. Truly amazing details, as always. :goodjob: I am especially fond of those swordsmen. Oh, and the French Gendarme. Wow!
TopGun Aug 21, 2009, 01:03 PM ...and back to modding I will go for a couple of days! ;)
Thanks Sandris, for keeping me busy... :D
(Very nice work, as usual, I might add.)
Virote_Considon Aug 21, 2009, 01:10 PM Excellent, yet again! :)
Sandris Aug 21, 2009, 01:39 PM I've seen that the old 1650 Russian pikeman is now a 1550, and the old 1550 has disappear?
The old 1550 Russian Pikeman historically suits better for 17th century, but he needs to be resized.
ShiroKobbure Aug 21, 2009, 01:42 PM Great units, I really like the Landsknecht
The Russian settler looks like a young Santa Claus.
Deth McBones Aug 21, 2009, 03:49 PM The Russian settler looks like a young Santa Claus.

I really needed these!
imperator1961 Aug 21, 2009, 04:29 PM Great pack! I like it very much! And what a colourful units! Cool! :goodjob:

When will you arrive in the modern age ?
:thanx:
Special THANKS for the Workers/Settler
Leaven Aug 21, 2009, 11:27 PM I too like the worker/settler, but especially the Swedish Crossbowman (mainly cuz he's very simply dressed, and suitable for a variety of civs). Thanks so much!
Grandraem Aug 22, 2009, 04:40 AM My mod will never get finished.:( But you are constantly improving it.:D
Great work, and wonderful units.:goodjob:
Ares de Borg Aug 25, 2009, 05:10 AM Love them. Back to modding!

themanuneed Aug 25, 2009, 01:10 PM No, just took a break and spent a week camping in strange clothes. ;)
Do you mean as strange as what they use to wear in the Renaissance period ? ;) Very nice pack indeed, and very useful even in fantasy mods, aren't they Grandraem? :mischief:
Mithadan Aug 25, 2009, 09:23 PM Wow, Sandris, those are really cool! I love them. I used to have trouble knowing what to do with all your units. These days, I just have to accept them as a surfeit of riches. Thanks, man.
BadKharma Aug 26, 2009, 06:37 PM I take a break and Sandris releases more units thank you very much for your dedication to making C3C great!
Grandraem Aug 27, 2009, 07:18 AM Very nice pack indeed, and very useful even in fantasy mods, aren't they Grandraem? :mischief:
Definitely.;)
Ares de Borg Sep 02, 2009, 06:12 PM Here's an interesting article for all of you who wonder how to use these units:
http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/8901/military.html
Btw, Sandris, you shouldn't scrap your older units. I found that there were some units in your former English Renaissance pack that are still very useful. The English targeteer makes an excellent generic renaissance swordsman, the light horseman is too nice to be forgotten as well. I guess these units deserve to stay in your library. :)
Ares de Borg Sep 03, 2009, 07:33 AM Two more remarks:
1) A Swiss pikeman would be great, since they were hired to fight all over Europe (and the Firaxis unit sucks).
2) The Russian pikeman doesn't have a pike but a halberd. :(
Keep up the good work!

Well, those units, which were not remade (resized) could be considered as still useful, but I will modify English Targeter a little and resize him as well.

I`ll try to fix it in a future. :)
Oh, and I didn`t forget about requested European generic unit packs, just don`t have an appropriate inspiration for them yet. :)
Ares de Borg Sep 03, 2009, 11:35 AM Thanks for the info. And if you need inspiration, we could need Irish, Polish or Flemish medieval packs... and some Persians. ;)
But I'm sure they are on your list somewhere, so I didn't write a formal request in the unit request thread yet.
:)
Ozymandias Sep 03, 2009, 08:12 PM [...] and the Firaxis unit sucks.
"Department Of Redundancy Department" :crazyeye:
C'est la guerre,

CivIIIgamer Sep 15, 2009, 04:43 PM Hello sandris, thank you very, very, very much, for these great units!
That was exactly what I was looking for.
For me it would be a bit better, if you build German units, but not Habsburgian.
Because Landsknechte (the german plural of landsknecht) weren´t the only German units. They were a minority of the whole German units.
The wish from ares for flemish units, can i agree, naturally only if you find time.
(I build a 30-years war scenario, and your units are amazing for it, and sorry for my terrible english)
Steph Sep 15, 2009, 08:56 PM It would probably help if you provide reference pictures for the German units you think are missing.

As for the link, you have posted mostly 17th century units, not 16th century`s ones. Also, it would be nice to get cavalry reference images for 1650-1700 period. :)

The Units, which i posted, are most from 1590-1650, and I dont have found many cavalry from 1650-1700, but from 1620-1650

Wow! Truly excellent and I can't wait for the release! :D
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 02:45 AM What about some 17th century Germans?

Sir Karnizer Nov 28, 2009, 02:57 AM I can´t wait:wow:
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 03:11 AM There are also 17th century Swedes.

But the new Immortal for the Persians would be my most needed Sandris`unit. :)
georgestow Nov 28, 2009, 03:57 AM PLEASE say there's something for the Portugese.:please:
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 04:12 AM No Portuguese yet, but some Spaniards

Steph Nov 28, 2009, 12:15 PM And to close the 17th century, just a few Russians.

D.Durand Nov 28, 2009, 12:55 PM oh my god...
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 01:09 PM Thank you, I'm flattered, but you don't have to bow to me. Sandris did the job, I just posted the previews :p
Yang Liu Nov 28, 2009, 01:52 PM Hey Steph
Learn about more to work with poser - its much easy to make this things !
H.Balck :king:
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 02:39 PM Sandris is doing them much better than I could everl do, and while he does it, I'm working on my editor and a project to increase the possibilities for the modders.
To each one his specialty.
CivIIIgamer Nov 28, 2009, 02:41 PM UNBELIEVABLE!!!
The French and the German unit are so perfect for my scenario.
But the other units are wonderful for other scenarios and mods, becuase it´s a great work!
After this preview I will no longer harass you :)
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 03:41 PM And it doesn't stop at the 17th century... It goes on to the 18th century.
But before that... There is a transition..
With for instance the English circa 1700
http://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20fuslier2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20grenadier2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20footguard2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20horse%20guard2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20dragoon2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20British%20horse%20grenadier2.jpg
georgestow Nov 28, 2009, 04:29 PM Wait....
There's more?
Sandris you genius.
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 04:39 PM There's a little more ;)
I previewed... 25%? of what is to come
Ares de Borg Nov 28, 2009, 07:29 PM Fantastic! Are there some Dutch and Poles as well? (please, please...)
Steph Nov 28, 2009, 10:39 PM Not yet. for the moment, Sandris is very busy with the main civiizations lines: England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Sweden.
I don't know what he will do after that, but I think you shouldn't expect other civs until these ones are finished.
D.Durand Nov 29, 2009, 03:09 AM Don't they clash with the already numerous units from Imperator ? he do already a lot for 17-19 centuries.
Steph Nov 29, 2009, 03:33 AM They overlap a bit.
But not completly: Imperator does more variety but with smaller period of time.
For instance, he did Savoy, Naples, Papal States, Venetia, while Sandris is doing only "Italy".
But while Sandris makes unit for Bronze Age (early / late), Iron age (early, lage), Dark ages, Middle ages (early, high late), 1550, 1650, 1700, 1750, 1790, 1812...
Imperator focused on 16th, 17th, 18th.
In fact, Sandris is very kind to try to match the needs of my own mod when he does new pack (although he always goes even beyond).
Although I like Imperator's units, I'd rather use only the units from Sandris to have more consistency. The only units of Imperator I planned to use are the artillery.
But this is because I'm making an epic mod. For someone who would like to focus on Europe, Imperator will bring additional units, such as Scotland for instance, or more than one German states.
I see them more as complementing each other than competiting.
Steph Nov 30, 2009, 02:24 AM At the turn of the century, circa 1700, you could also be interested by the Great Northern War. You'll need some Russians for this.
http://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20fusilier2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20grenadier2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20guard2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20chevaliergarde2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20horse%20grenadier2.jpghttp://stephane.f.david.free.fr/CivMod/UnitIcones/Gunpowder/1700%20Russian%20dragoon2.jpg
Kyriakos Nov 30, 2009, 10:50 AM This pack wont be that great because Sandris didnt do the greek bandits :shake: :)
Steph Dec 01, 2009, 02:52 AM Teaser of the day. The Russians need someone to fight in early 1700. The Swedes are good candidates.

BrensharQuest Dec 27, 2009, 12:01 AM These are some awesome units, they are not actually done yet I presume?
Steph Dec 27, 2009, 01:57 AM Most of them are done by Sandris, but they will be released all together in one big pack. Probably next year.
Arexander Dec 27, 2009, 03:40 AM That probably next year sounded bad first but then I realized that the next year is only 4-5 more days from this.
Awesome units. Can't wait for the next year. :D
Steph Dec 27, 2009, 05:12 AM Well, technically next year could be anywhere from 4 days to 369 days from today...
Steph Dec 27, 2009, 09:36 AM For whose who still don't know Sandris is one of the nicest person here, I have updated the French and Prussian previews with 3 additional units he did from a request of mine.

tom2050 Dec 28, 2009, 01:09 AM Well, technically next year could be anywhere from 4 days to 369 days from today...
That would be crazy if we all had to wait in great anticipation for a release that happens on Dec 31, 2010!
Yes, but he's like a brilliant, reclusive scientist who just happens to shattered well-established paradigms every year or so.
 If Sandris is a brilliant, reclusive scientist, than I want to be one also! I'm still amazed and ,should I use the word flabergasted, on the amount of units Sandris creates so quickly, and they are all high quality beautiful units!
Hail to Sandris fits the bill perfectly!
Tom
Steph Dec 28, 2009, 02:16 AM It's a positive feedback loop.
Sandris makes nice units. I like it, I want more. So I set up my webpage with all the unit lines for the main civilizations with many period, and reference pictures when I can find them. So Sandris makes more units, and he tries to fill the gaps for my mod. It's a long hard work. But as I like it a lot, I make a special version of SBB to automate the generation of multiple storyboards. So he makes more units. Now, I'm too limited by the current civIII engine... and I make the expanded game to support evolutive civ and try to have more than 4 eras...
Everyone is happy!
Raffles Dec 31, 2009, 01:58 PM Incredible units, but Steph, I don't see any Austrians here. How's that going to work for your mod?
Happy New Year to all,
Raffles

I hope that when you're done, you continue to have time to continue with the ancient and classical periods. Thanks, you and Imperator are to me the best creators of units.

BadKharma Jan 04, 2010, 11:10 AM Sandris let me say first of all thank you so very much!
For the Units
1. Musket or musketoon
2. Pikeman or gaffman
3 Swordman with a pistol
4. Crossbowman
5. grenadier (grenade thrower with a pistol) the grenades are basically small cannonballs with a fuse.
6. A swordsman throwing Molotov Cocktails
7. Captain sword and pistol or a bandalior of pistols drawing and firing them.
I think that would give plenty of variety for units. I will post some pictures later from Osprey books for your reference.
BadKharma Jan 04, 2010, 11:12 AM I see general jcl beat me too the pictures. If you need anymore let me know. In some of the pictures you can see the musketoon and the pike and gaff.

In some of the pictures you can see the musketoon and the pike and gaff. Some Asian pirates (Orang laut) would be nice to include. Many crews were of mixed background, especially during the heyday of Madagascar as a pirate haven. Maybe a with simple tattoo design, like Queequeg. Some kind of head scarf, and knee length pants or a sarong. They liked colorful batik designs, so plenty of options for civ-color.http://www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/images/PLATE121CX.JPGhttp://www.windsong2.com/images/01-WP026D.jpghttp://img159.imageshack.us/img159/1498/majapahitmarineun8.pnghttp://sirismm.si.edu/naa/97/asia/04459000.jpg

BadKharma Jan 08, 2010, 04:21 PM Both the marines and the Cossacks look very interesting. I a going to have to edit my Pirate scenario to add in European Powers marines.
Raffles Jan 09, 2010, 10:47 AM Very cool. Not entirely sure from just the one preview, but the cap on the 1750 British marine looks like it could be used for a 7YW Prussian fusilier as well?

Ares de Borg Jan 09, 2010, 11:59 AM I hope there will be a generic European marine as well?
Sandris Jan 09, 2010, 02:41 PM I hope there will be a generic European marine as well?
Ares, due to your multiple requests for generic units they will be made too, but I would like to know what color should I give to cuffs and collars (white, red, yellow...) ? :)
Raffles Jan 09, 2010, 06:29 PM Wouldn't it be best to give him a blue coat (most common uniform colour, and he is a marine...) with civ coloured cuffs and collar? Would probably be better than giving him a civ coloured coat, as I'm sure no marine in history would ever be caught in a pink or purple coat...
Of course, I'm assuming that you were planing on using civ colours...
Steph Jan 09, 2010, 11:42 PM Wouldn't it be best to give him a blue coat (most common uniform colour)
Do you mean most common as in French grey/white? Russian green? Austrian white? Spanish white? British red?
By the way, the 1790 Russians. There may be a alternate pack with Potemkine uniform if my prayers reach God (Sandris).

Raffles Jan 10, 2010, 09:37 AM [QUOTE=Steph;8796186]Do you mean most common as in French grey/white? Russian green? Austrian white? Spanish white? British red? QUOTE]
True, however most of those countries also used blue uniforms for at least some branches of their military, especially the navy, and marines in many cases were part of the navy and not the army.
But of course, that is just my opinion, bearing in mind that this would be a generic unit and not strictly historical like the rest.
Ares de Borg Jan 10, 2010, 02:19 PM @ Sandris: Thank you for considering my request. :) I just need some generic units for those countries you haven't covered so far (Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Greece). I think that the idea with the blue coat isn't too bad, but it would be ok to have a civ colored unit with white or red cuffs and collars as well. I'll just leave it to you. ;)
Blue Monkey Jan 10, 2010, 05:09 PM I second the request for generic units. They would prove useful in several scenarios currently in some stage of creation. ;)

But he hopes to see this solved soon, to finish the current pack and make new packs.
In the meantime, he said he appreciate our concern for him and thanks us for that.
Ares de Borg May 01, 2010, 04:36 PM Good news!

Dear me! Anyone have any news from the lad??
Steph Sep 06, 2010, 01:38 AM The last time he answered my email was in june. He said he was very busy, but he wanted to finish several packs.
Since then, nothing. I said several email enquiries as I was a little worried, but he answered none.
I hope he is well.

Goldflash Sep 06, 2010, 12:11 PM Wow. I hope people were this concerned about me when I went dark.
BadKharma Sep 06, 2010, 12:16 PM Well, this does not sound good I will join in the :religion:and hope all is well with him. He was really on a role making wonderful units.

Ozymandias Sep 06, 2010, 03:22 PM @Goldflash - you went dark? :mischief:
@BadKharma - I'm relocating from NYC to Genoa Italy ca. 10/1 after 20 yrs. in my current place, and the amount of work and stress makes Atlas want to shrug ...

Plotinus Sep 08, 2010, 08:06 AM Guys, come on, wasn't this thread about units or something?
Elwynn_DHn Oct 23, 2010, 12:50 PM Thanks for these very nice units. Since a long long time, I was in search for renaissance style light cavalry, hvy cavalry etc... With ur upload I was able to complete in my mod the renaissance pack unit, and medieval horse arbalest! Thank u very much!
