View Full Version : Newbie Dotmapping Help
Cadros Aug 27, 2009, 01:45 PM Hi there everyone, I'm new to the site and the game and was wondering if anyone could help me. Playing as Ghengis Khan on Noble (second game) and had this strange map to colonise.
Could someone help me dot-map it because every time i try i seem to miss out on something or arent happy...
Thanks for any help :)

Tatran Aug 27, 2009, 01:58 PM Here's my suggestion what to do with all that gold, Cadros.

Kadazzle Aug 27, 2009, 01:59 PM I had to do this on Paint, as you didn't post a save, but here ya go:

blitzkrieg1980 Aug 27, 2009, 02:01 PM Sweet commerce map to the east. Westward looks pretty stale. Don't plan on working all those gold. GREAT trade fodder, though.
@Kadazzle:
Is that north east site settled on a floodplain??? No me gusta. I would settle 1NE of that on the coastal plains forest so you still get the fish, work all floodplains cottages and don't impede on the other city to the south
mariogreymist Aug 27, 2009, 02:01 PM I'd say start with the hill southwest of the cow. This site gives you access to three gold, and certainly enough food (perhaps more than enough) to mine it all. You get two more gold settling next to that mountain to the north. Then the hill between the rice and other cow in the east. Make a city up on those flood plains, and it can keep you in as many workers and settlers as you will ever need.
Nice location. hope you have horses in there somewhere. If you do, you will be in Keshik heaven before anyone has any hope of defending against them.
Cadros Aug 27, 2009, 02:02 PM Thank you very much for the help, i'll post the save next time i have a question :)

How do you figure he has more than enough food? No farms until chain irrigation allows via CS and cows only give +2:food: (feeding only 1 gold mine) plus the 2 in city center feeds only 2 gold mines and no growth.
Silu Aug 27, 2009, 02:26 PM Some reasoning:
Working all gold is huge for early-mid game; so borrowing that 1 fp from capital is useful. With only 1 grain (visible anyway), a fish and so much cow-abunga for health, being riverside is a definite must for those flood plain cities. Otherwise the rice-city would be 1E.

Okay, one food short assuming there's no potential we can't see in the east. Cows, and 1 farmable grassland...I'd definitely explore that before deciding on a site.
Murky Aug 27, 2009, 02:44 PM DaveMcW's is the one I'd probably go with if you want to get as many cottage tiles as possible while getting most of the resources in your fat crosses.

1 food short for growth and 3 short for growth and working 3 mines (also assuming no potential on that 1 tile)
mariogreymist Aug 27, 2009, 04:07 PM imo, even if you can't grow it, a city that can work 3 gold mines early can be a game breaker. Sure, it may not be until civil service that you can get maximum potential, but put a library in such a town and you will get a lot of early techs much sooner than your opponents.
michmbk Aug 27, 2009, 05:19 PM Did you tech AH yet? How can anyone do a proper dotmap with Genghis Khan until you tech AH?
Tech AH, find horses, settle near there, settle the gold to get to HBR faster, mass keshiks, and that gold will help keep your economy afloat as you plunder, raid and kill any AI within 50 tiles.
Anyway, in all seriousness, you've got some really good players who have already given you dotmaps, so no need for me to offer any input on that. But I would recommend teching AH next, and factoring any horses you find very heavily into where to place city #2.
VoirDire Aug 27, 2009, 06:05 PM You'd need food to work the lower 3 golds, and you fan only farm by the river to the right.

Shafi Aug 27, 2009, 10:40 PM Do you have a 4000BC save? if you do could you post it please??? i would love to try this map out :)
TheMeInTeam Aug 27, 2009, 10:50 PM Dave's placement all the way. I'd settle the fish site 3N of his cowpatties too, but later.

Thirded.
Silu Aug 27, 2009, 11:47 PM Hm - I couldn't stand having a gold not worked, or delaying the Fish for that matter (health + possible NE site). Though that XXL-sized gold vein probably gives all the health resources one can ask for in trades.

For dot mapping in game, with the full city BFC included you can't beat the B.U.G mod. Helps me easily see resources and overlap, and mark all future city sites so I can worry about more important matters.
Here is a link with a picture of what it looks like;
