Dragons... I've made 5 different versions as well as a default gray with all the animations for anyone else to use to make their own colors. I've also come up with several sounds that I think sound pretty good... if anyone comes up with anything better please post it in the sounds forum and put a note in this thread.

The versions are:
Black Acid attack
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Black_Dragon.zip

Blue Lightning Attack
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Blue_Dragon.zip

Green Fire (the traditional fire breathing serpent)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Green_Dragon.zip

Red Fire (a slightly different attack)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Red_Dragon.zip

White Ice
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/White_Dragon.zip

Gray Template: This includes all the different attack animations so someone can mix and match in creating their own color version
Part 1... You need both parts if you want all the template FLC's
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Dragon_Template1.zip
Part 2
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Dragon_Template2.zip

Dragon Sounds... You need this zip if you download any of the above versions. I put them in a seperate folder in the units directory and that's where the INI files look for them. I did this to save room since most of the sounds are the same for the different colors.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Dragon_Sounds.zip

New Attack Animations to turn it into a Flying Unit (1.4mb each):
Part 1 (default gray for editing)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Dragon_Flying_Attack_Part1.zip

Part 2 (one FLC for each of my color versions)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Dragon_Flying_Attack_Part2.zip

Preview of the new attack further down on page 4.

Wow. Mind-boggeling. I'm curious to know what you do for a living. All your units look so "professional" one's gotta think you do this for a living. If not, perhaps you should. ;)

Great job.

Oct 05, 2002, 01:26 PM
Well most of the 'natural movement' is a result of the Poser mechanics... It really works wonders with animation :)
Wasn't someone already doing a Tolkien mod? I thought I remembered something a while back... But the more fantasy units the better :)
Nope I don't do anything relating to art for a living (although I'd love to be able to) I have sold a few paintings but so far nothing in the computer art realm.

Whooo hoooo, those are briliant. As you can no doubt tell i like dragons, and i'm sure i can find a way to fit them into my er, modern era game. I like the idea of an everquest scenario, and perhaps someone should do the sleeper (electrical dragon) though i cant remeber its name. I have actually seen the sleeper in the game on Firiona Vie server...thankfully it was still asleep at the time otherwise i would be dead :)

These units are great!! Just one question, what do you think the stats for them should be?

Kinboat
Oct 09, 2002, 05:27 PM
Well I'm using them as a barbarian substitute at the moment... so their strong just not too strong. Something around the knight. But if you're using them in a scenario specific fantasy type thingy I'd say they should be the baddest things out there :) I said this in the read me but I'll post it here too... They were designed to be land units despite the fact of their flight.

The units_32 files supplied are not fully compatible with the default one. The red dragon changes to whatever color the civ is, and the rest have no civ specific color marks on them at all.

Any plans to fix this in the near future?

GIDustin

Kinboat
Oct 10, 2002, 08:53 PM
Well I didn't really do much for the units_32 files... I basicly just took one of the pcx files and cropped and resized a frame, then pasted into the original file. If I get some free time I might try to refine them a bit.

Anyways, great unit! :goodjob:

Wanna write a Poser Tutorial?

Kinboat
Oct 17, 2002, 10:51 PM
I didn't model it in Poser... While it is possible it's much easier to use models that others have made. Modeling in Poser is basicly making an object in another program then importing it and assigning it's skeletal structure. I used a dragon model (with some modifications) from DAZ3d...
As for animating if you use the dials on the side instead of dragging the arm you can stop the chest from following it... Or you can temporarily turn off the Inverse Kinematics Chains.

Well there's a slight problem here... I'll be perfectly happy adding the civ specific spots to the models for the units_32.pcx file... However I haven't figured out what to do with the red dragon... In the file red is the civ color so how do I stop the red dragon model from changing colors? If anyone knows of some way around this let me know and I'll rip off a fix ASAP... Until then maybe just use another of the models to represent it in the Queue.

GIDustin
Oct 26, 2002, 01:12 AM
What you would have to do is alter the pallette so that red appears in more areas than just the forst couple of rows, and then use the new red colors you put in. Sound complicated? I may be able to do some altering and fix this, but I just suffered from a huge "I shouldn't have done that" kind of thing, and now hald of my programs dont work. It will take me about 1-2 days to get back up and running, and I will attempt to do this for you. After that, I can pump out more star wars units :P

Kinboat
Oct 26, 2002, 01:55 AM
I was under the impression that the units_32.pcx shouldn't be tampered with... I could edit the pallette myself but I didn't think the game would handle it well. Changing any of the colors would just mess up the other units in the file.

Neomega
Oct 26, 2002, 08:22 AM
Don't edit the units_32.pal. It'll cause more problems than solutions. I believe there are four red tiles in the palette about midway down that don't count as a team color.

Bearing in mind that the bottom of every one of my posts is a link saying that I've made an updated units_32.pcx with over 600 icons added, did it not occur to you to click on that link and find out if maybe - just maybe - 5 of those 600 icons were the 5 dragon icons ;)?

syversblade
Nov 25, 2002, 05:29 PM
I realized that link, but i don't want all 600 icons, it takes unnecessary time. Just wondrin if some one would like to do that, perhaps add it to the original post so that us people without those capabilities will be able to actually use these units :)

Non-Elemental damages all enemies - The camera zooms out into space to view the Final Fantasy world. The dragon of the seven heavens glides through the clouds, seeking the evil. Back at the battle, the sky is set alight with lightning, rumbling with thunder. Suddenly, Bahamut storms through the dark sky and attacks with 4 huge white flares which cause a massive explosion in the face of the enemy. Bahamut flies away.

Tjedge, those seem a bit difficult to do so that they don't get mixed with regular colored dragons.

These are the four dragons I though of doing next: They are new versions of Kinboat's blue, green and black. Blue and Green were IMO a bit pale and the black one was actually a dark, greyish green.

Brown Dragon is just for the fun of it. :)

Those would be cool.

I was thinking about those Gemstone dragons and realized the same thing after I had posted the request. Forget those, as I can just use the same unit graphic for the Gemstone as the regular that fits it. Since Gemstone dragons actually use 2 breath weapons and 1 is always their color counterpart, I'll just do that.

I also realize a Dragon Turtle wasn't quite what you meant as a request. Just thought I'd try my luck. :D

Ok, just one more.

Arghis was criticizing the civ colored wings in the Mystara-thread so I decided to do a dragon without any civ color. Naturally this restricts its uses, but I guess there are times when only one civ has dragons or there is just one dragon in the scenario. I named him Smaug. :) This is naturally compatible with the palettes of the other dragons so it's a zip to give him different colored brothers.

I like the color changes. In fact, yours looks more like the color they chouls be, and those older ones look like they could be used for the Gemstones I mentioned. I also like the new colors you made. Now what to do with them. When I started this Dungeons & Dragons mod, I never realized there would actually be any dragons. :goodjob:

I think best option would be to deselect the tail in all frames and then replace civ colors with body colors. However, that means deselecting the tail in hundreds of frames. Too much work for me. :(

Greetings...

A rider with a very long spear - Like on the horseman, could be the Civ color, and could also be another new unit - Dragon Riders (sort of like a pre tech helicopter.)

Details like a pack, a really nice high pommel saddle, a safety rope to keep the rider from falling out of the saddle, a long trailing rope ladder etc....

Question: In the Ini - there are three attacks - are they played one after the other?
So the first attack could be the flying attack, the second the melee attack etc...?

Glancing through here, I can't find a gold dragon. Could someone do a quick color coversion (with no civ specific color) or point me in the direction of one that already exists?

I have a Gold Dragon version I got from Grandraem, but I can't find the link I downloaded from. It will be in my mod. It has civ-specific colors, though, so if you want it anyway let me know and I'll see about uploading it.

The black one seems to be too bony for a dragon..

Nice touch-ups, Drift :) (though Smaug had a golden belly ;) for the millenia he'd been snoozing on his treasure)

These are great units, but I have a question. When I load them into the Civilopedia the background color is blue. I thought it was supposed to be white. Am I doing something wrong?

Did you add the icons in pediaicons.txt? Or did you just add the unit in the editor?
