I would like to introduce a new form of governance -I call "Mongolian" -to the newer players on here who enjoy warefare type of games. Since I only play with other humans, I don't know if this would work with AIs.
The basic concept is the increasing your empire's size exponantionally while mantaining viable science research.
1. Use militaristic tribe and organize early core (2-3 cities) mostly for the production.
2. Invest heavily in a large stack early, all while racing to get code of laws
3. When you feel ur military is sufficently large -strike your closest neighbor. You must reply on numbers and speed to 'banzai' charge' enemy cities. Your losses will be many (especially if you dont have catapults yet), but since you have switched to war production early you should replace them fast.
4. As soon as u can get Code of law, switch to caste system civic. The biggest obstacle on large empries is city maintance cost, where with setting 2 or more merchants in each newly conqored city you avoid that problem. You also can support a rather enormough army size given enough merchants. Make sure to only keep citeis with enough food to allocate merchants, thow.
5. After this go to Feudalism to enhance army support and free exp points. Keep building more units and steamrolling neighbor after neighbor. Your research should be fine due to many merchants. Sometimes i can even be on 100% with many ancient citeis without even currency.
6. Currency should be the next priority as it lightens the load of so many citeis you just conqored.
7. You will be done after whole contient is yours, at which point you are in a perfect position to compete with remaining tribes. Then you can switch to economic development and disbandon most of your units.
Good luck

Currency > CoL for paying bills. You do clearly want both, but currency is sometimes easier, too (trade/extort alphabet, build research to currency if desperate).

Slavery ----> whip courthouses tends to be > caste for the horse archer charge

Cottages > merchants for paying the bills at low slider %.

Congrats. It's called a plunder economy

I did three walkthroughs with the Mongols

The last one is still in progress but the outcome cannot be doubted.

yeah, I've done this before many times. Mongol Keshiks are an absolute game-changer, but CoL, Currency, Pottery, and even Sailing, are all important to retaining what you've fought so hard to gain. And the Great Wall helps too.
