Welcome, here you will find my unit graphics conversions. Big Thanks to nick0515 for providing info on where to find many of these units (http://phrozenkeep.hugelaser.com/resources/infinitum/index-anims-ac.html), without his info, this thread would not exist.

Any constructive criticisms, comments, or suggestions on how an existing unit conversion can be improved is more than welcome.

Important Notes!
All units come with Large/Small/Unit32 PCX files, as well as Sound Files (unless otherwise noted).

I make it clear to everyone that I DO NOT MAKE THESE, I DO NOT CREATE THEM, NOR ANIMATE THEM, they are conversions. (unless stated otherwise; some are by me)

The units in the Animated Gif Previews may sometimes 'jump'. This is because the program I use to create the animated gif's from the FLC files cannot take the offsets into account. The units are not this way in game. If you notice a unit that does this in game, let me know so I can correct it's offsets.

Thanks for the mention Tom. Units are looking great. The Bone Golem is especially cool. Once you have pumped out all the units practically any fantasy mod will be able to be made. Another nice unit Tom. How do these units compare size wise to civ units? Are they about the same scale? Are you resiszing them at all?

tom2050
Oct 04, 2009, 10:22 PM
The previews are larger than the units in the game. I am resizing them all, for human figures, I am attempting to resize them close to the average Firaxsis units, and i test them in-game to get the initial Offset (unit centered in the circle) so I can make sure they look alright. For the fantasy units, I try to get them close to other similar units. The True Shadow is a bit larger than the average unit, the Bone Golem is as well (Golem's are supposed to be larger usually than human figures, so I based it on that, but it's not excessive). The next unit I will be posting here in a minute is close to size of the Firaxsis Knight's Horse, but slightly larger.

I'm keeping all the original work files, so in case any changes or fixes to one of these units needs to be made, it can be done so easily (such as a size change, etc).

I can post a small preview in-game of size comparison for the units for now on, it only takes a second to do a printscreen when I test the unit in game.

Sohmien / Demonic Horse (unit conversion)

Sohmien are horrible horse-like monsters that emerge randomly only when some creature desires vengeance. Sohmien vaguely resemble horses with leathery, ashen hides, and mist-shrouded hooves that kills any vegetation they touch. Frifhtful wails accompany their ride. Sohmien heads feature dead white eyes, wide mouths full of needle-like fangs, and downward-sweeping horns. Their shoulder blades extend beyond their heads and necks, and three bone spikes extend from each soulder, extensions of their spinal column.

According to the myth, sohmien are creatures of vengeance. Sohmien hate nightmares and attack them in preference to all other opponents. It is said that the ride of the sohmien will not end until they kill every nightmare in existence. No one has ever successfully used a sohmien as a mount.

So instead of a Dark Treant, colour convert it to a Light Treant? :)

It could easily be lightened to be more of a lighter brown (similar to the other Treant shown in the picture). I can do so, but it will have to wait a bit, I have my hands way too full at the moment.

Tom

No not lighter brown but even more darker, almost pitch black like that True Shadow unit you converted.. it is pretty much black, isn't it. Actually, even if the brown shades would be changed to grey or dark blueish grey then I guess it would be already enough to match with True Shadow. The idea is that I want to try to create a space mod (I hope that I overcome some difficulties to make possible to create random generated space map).. and I would use both of these units as some alien creatures (if you perhaps have seen Babylon 5 series, then these creatures would be similar to shadows in the series).

And, take your time.. I have nowhere to hurry.. actually I even hope to get a better computer before starting to mod again.

BTW.. your Dark Treant as actual treant for fantasy scenarios is perfect.

Yeti / Abominable Snowman (unit conversion)

Sometimes confused with the abominable snowman, the yeti is a distant cousin to the great carnivorous apes of warmer climates.

An adult yeti stands 8 feet tall and is covered in long, white fur. Their feet and hands are wide and flat, which helps to disperse their great weight (about 300 pounds) on treacherous snow fields. They travel on all fours like the apes, but fight very comfortably standing erect.

Has No Civ Colors. This Yeti came out a bit larger than I expected in game. Looks more like 10-12 feet high. I will probably make a smaller version in the future to fit the 8 foot high description. I will also make a recoloured brown version to act as a Bigfoot / Sasquatch.

Black Bear (unit conversion and recolouration)

A rather common omnivorous mammal, bears tend to avoid humans unless provoked. Exceptions to this rule can be a most unfortunate occurrence.

Bears are, in general, large and powerful animals which are found throughout the world's temperate and cooler climates. With dense fur protecting them from the elements and powerful claws protecting them from other animals, bears are the true rulers of the animal kingdom in the areas where they live.

Perhaps a name change may be needed. I changed her from the Downloads section from Medieval to Ancient units... but I suppose she could be used in many eras (such as a modern era in the likes that Balthasar mentioned she looks just like his 1983 Cocktail Waitress).

In my own defence though, I didn't come up with these descriptions, they are the ones that came with the units from the original games.

Perhaps: Diplomatic Goddess of Sinful Beauty? That could cover all bases.

She does indeed. I would call her a "Debbie" unit, and she would cost enormous amounts in maintenance.

Perhaps: Diplomatic Goddess of Sinful Beauty? That could cover all bases.

Now wait a minute. She could also be a plausible Vestal Virgin. Oz mentioned Sheba; I've thought of Salome. For that matter, she could also be any of the women in HBO's Rome.

She could even be a Space Babe. A creation of Harry Mudd.

So how about "Classic Beauty"? Unless there are more like her around (nice thought), in which case she could be "Barefoot Beauty".

The draconic heritage of a half-dragon determines what powers they will manifest as their draconian characteristics come to the fore. Half-blues are generally cunning and arrogant. Half-reds are defined by their arrogance, cruelty, selfishness and generally malignant nature. There are more half-reds than any other type of half-chromatic, due to the evil cunning of red dragons. The reds' desire for human and demihuman maidens is well-documented, and most of the time they simply end up eating them. However, sometimes half-reds will allow adventurers to "rescue" a maiden they have captive, making sure to send a "present" back with the mother...

These will take a bit longer than the ones I was doing previously (still doing :)), but they have a huge amount of animations, and shadows as well (Close to 300 frames for all FLC's, and has more FLC's than can be used, 3 Attacks, Default, Run, Victory, Fidget, and about 3 others).

As can be seen he is not standing where the circle is. The images at 240x240 can not have their offsets in the negative to bring him up anymore. So I would have to shrink him just enough so he stands in correct spot. But I will make a smaller version also.

Demon Of Torment (Large) (unit conversion)

Demons at all time feel a compulsion to kill, stronger demons usually hunting the inferior ones. They consider themselves to be superior to the human race, and view humanity as 'a stain on the universe'. For this reason, they appear to take particular pleasure in killing humans, often leaving other demons alone when faced with the oppurtunity to hunt mortal prey.

No Civ Colors. Has AttackA, AttackB, AttackC, Default, Run, Fidget, Fortify, and Victory animations.

Although the file size is close to 5MB, this unit is seriously cool looking in-game and I recommend checking it out! Medium and Small Versions of this unit are on the way...

re the lady: what about "Dangerous Beauty"?

re the daemon: definitely useable for at least one of the rakshasa units I've requested in a few different places.

Dangerous Beauty is not bad at all... Beats 'Harlot' I suppose! Now I just need to go back and change the name (it's like reaching for the remote control, I don't want to, but I must force myself). :crazyeye:

awesome we needed a good small demon for a while

A small (and medium) version is on the way, this one fills the screen :)

Yes, although he looks very cool that size I guess it'll have to be shrunk enough to fit in the circle. Both big a small versions will be greatly aprreciated.

Now that I've finished putting together my Wood Elf Buildings Pack (see my signature) and with the speed you are producing these units Tom, I think it's high time I did some serious work on my fantasy Mod.

Luckily, the Demon only had to be shrunk a small amount, I didn't expect to get him done this quick to put up, but it was much easier getting the final details completed than I expected.
Your Wood Elf Buildings look terrific! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Hey Tom.. again really great units. But again I would have a request.. this time for another resizing. I think many of us would have a great use for that Ogre in a normal human size. At least I would.

Thanks for your kind words... Once HoMM3 is released, I will have a horde more units (recolourations and the such) to put up, as well as all a host of other Civ3 graphics.

Not a problem, I will get around to it when I can. To everyone, if there is any critisicm of any unit of things I may have missed (such as a unit being too large, sounds not playing correctly with animations, etc) please let me know, so I can put up a corrected file.

I may miss things when going through the whole conversion process, since in order to get them done, I have to try to work with speed, and hence do not spend a great amount of time viewing the actual finished unit.

This has got to be the most beautiful and detailed unit creation in the history of Civ3. Well done. Wish I could get some tanks and aircraft with as stunning detail as your demon.

Thank You, But just to make it clear, this was a unit conversion, I did not actually make the unit or animate it. Although I stated it on the first page, and I have it stated on the downloads section, it seems I forgot to C&P the text to these pages (so I am adding it now ).

Thank you... It's been a couple days since I've put another out... the reason being, I'm re-familiarizing myself wth 3ds Max (only some very very basics, I need to get the shadow right), since I have a new conversion process down, which will bring another huge amount of new units (several hundred) on top of the 300 or so I still have to do right now. I don't want to spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out the best way to make the magnenta shadow in 3ds Max, but will play around with it some more to try to get it right.

So are the 300 units to do right now from the site I told you about? Where are the other several hundred coming from?

500+ new fantasy units. That is staggering Tom. With that many units to choose from it will be possible for many fantasy scenarios to be made with widely varying units as apposed to the current situation where any fantasy mod would have ot rely heavily on the units made for WH 2.5

Awesome!

Yes, the site you referred me to has over 350 total I think. There are about 300+ still zipped on my HD, although this number is somewhat exagerated, since many of these are cases of the same creature with different weapons, or different colors; so actually it's more around 180-200.

The others are from Bioware Games as well, and have been converted already to other games such as D2, but only a very few have (about 8-9 that I could find, which the above Demon is one of them), because to do so is a very monotonous process, although not very difficult. I will have to look into NWN2, because I think there are problems there, but NWN should also go very quickly once I get the process down.

The 200 may not be that high, since many are animals and such, and NPC's can't be used due to lack of animations; but still a good amount to work with.

Something of an understatment I think Tom. There are currently 465 fantasy units in the database (and that's including all the stuff you have already done). And we could well see that doubled thanks to your efforts. It will be a grand achievement Tom. I can't express enough my gratitude for all the work you are doing. Thank you, that is the site where all of these have come from, except for the Demon of Torment. Nick let me know of the site not too long ago when I was asking for places to find units to convert, which prompted me to create this thread to post the units.

On the first converstion, it took many hours (initially I stated 30-45 mins, which was not correct, since it did not include finishing all aspects, such as sounds, pcx, offsets, palettes, testing the unit, etc), but thanks to many more programs I have since started using to help alleviate the mundane tasks (such as renaming files, mass image resizing, etc), it has sped the process up by quite a bit, since the programs can do these things in batch automation. Now the time is between 1 and 2 hours (depending on the file).

that is the site where all of these have come from

Well I'm glad to learn this, as I can stop bugging you for units that you don't have at your disposal. I visited the site, and made up a little list of units I'd particularly like to see made:

Aasimar
Lesser Basilisk
Birds (all of them)
Collector
High Threat Construct
Cranium Rat
Detonarra
Dustman (Female & Male)
Ghost
Great Cat (Leopard & Panther)
Harlot (Variants 1 & 2)
Harpy
Ignus
Mammals (all)
Merchant, Female
Morte
Nameless One (all)
Sahuagin (all)
*Sailor
Shadow Thief
*Sirine
Snake
Spider
Tanar'ri (Vrischika) - recolored
Tanar'ri, Marilith
Tanar'ri, Succubus
Townsperson, Female
Townsperson, Male
Townsperson, Angry Female
Vampires
Volo
*Wailing Virgin
Wolf

Looking at them all, it's apparent that some other unit makers have been raiding that site for years. Many of those elementals are familiar, for instance. My personal feeling is that, as imaginative as the fantasy units are, the human and animal units are more universally useful in a wider variety of mods.

As for our discussion in the Steampunk Unit Request thread, I think the Sirine (recolored) comes closest to what I was thinking of for Dejah.

Keep up the excellent work! You're inspiring everyone anew.

wow.. barbarians on this site are exactly what I have wanted for a long long long time. And by the way.. same units with different weapons are very important for many modmakers.. very good way to create unitlines. But I don't request nothing more.. as I just hope that over time you do as much of these as you can. Ok.. when I see something that I would like resized or recolored again, then I might make an request ;)
And I hope that you make this Bronze Sentry from there quickly.. I guess, Steampunk mod team would be extremely happy too to get that. Perhaps only much more scaled down in size. But as I said.. I know you have already many requests, so take them in your own pace and order.

I will be converting the other Half-Dragons very soon, as they are different in shape, not only in color, compared to the black Half Dragon.

The Bronze Sentry: I am unable to find the sound files for it, they are not on the graphics site which was linked above by BigDog. I may just through in something, and post it up here.

In the case; of same units with different weapons, as AncientOne mentioned; I suppose the unit count is back up in the 300's instead of 180'ish. :)

@ Balthasar: The Lesser Basilisk that you mentioned will be converted, but I will be releasing a much better looking Basilisk when CoMM is released, you can see it here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8544127&postcount=272) in the top pic; just to let you know.
And note, the Sirine is the same as the Dryad/Tree Spirit on the first page, just a recolor, thus check that unit out and see if those animations fit what you need, and if that works I can make it up for you when I get around to it.

I will keep converting until every single last one is done... but with so many, it may take time (even if I posted 1 a day).

Demogorgons' reptilian appearance and nature make him a favorite among snake and lizard creatures, but he is served by creatures of all types.

Demogorgon attacks first using his gaze weapons and should any survive the onslaught, he will utilize his tentacles, tail, and bites. He uses his spells and spell-like abilities liberally in combat, and should the combat go against him, he will summon demons to cover his escape.

Apparently someone had a problem with the fact that I did not put in the original unit creator's name of these units (from the game company itself) in the name section of the downloads database (which I have no clue who the original person's names are anyways). So I am going to make it clear right here...

To let everyone know, I am not familiar with what games these come from and have never played whatever games they come from, the list says Bioware/Interplay, this and that at the bottom, so I assume they are all Bioware/Interplay game... and these are conversions of conversions (of conversions?)... I don't appreciate that individual saying I am ripping them off, and that I seem to just not care to 'bother' with names (that I don't know) unless it is another CFC user. if Bioware/Interplay doesn't mind them being converted, then that individual needs to go find something useful to do with their time, or at least get the facts first.

If moderator's think I should add into the author name section of the downloads database the game company, the original creator's names of the unit from the game company, and perhaps a whole biography on their lives there to give proper credit where credit is due, then let me know. I have added a note to the first post stating that these are Bioware/Interplay converstions in large bold print so no one can miss it (although it is made well clear that all are conversions on every single post), and a link is given to this thread on every database post.

Of course, if all that needs to be added, then someone needs to wade through the thousands of units, and find every single last conversion, and make sure those are all appended also.

If that user has any other problems, contact a moderator, and the moderator can contact me.

If I am not following forum rules, then a moderator can please contact me (and every other person that has ever converted a unit), to make sure the life history of the unit is included in a book along with the download.

Oh God, someone's complaining about your work? It's gotta be jealousy, pure and simple. Listen, I do alot of terrain work, and scour the web regularly for textures, etc. and have discovered, somewhat to my surprise, that some of the terrain work that's been offered here as original work was actually reworked from some other game file. When you've actually gone out of your way, as you have, to indicate a source, you should be commended, not chastised. What you do is no different from the sort of sampling/remixing that's common online and that every rapper does. You're not being paid for this, so there's no infringement, period. You can give up your remixing hobby when Doctor Dre gives up his. At least you try to give credit for source material. I say, fuggetaboutit and keep on keepin on, my friend. There are always dogs around to nip at your heels.

Edit so I don't have to double post: Hey Oz, just where is that slave girl? I've scoured the database and can't find it...

I have a few barbarian units done, but I am trying to find the best way to add civ colors to them, since I assume that is a priority for human units. I can post both versions, civ colored and non-civ colored for units then. It takes very little time to do an extra version, so I do that for now on.

Once CoMM3 is released, I will have about 100-120+ more units to post up as well (includes spell graphics) in here and the recoloured graphics thread. For spells, I may make a new thread, since I have found many other sources of spells that can be converted although I don't have the time to do those right now, but the more the better :).

Silver Gorgon (unit conversion)

Converted for the upcoming mod Conquests of Might and Magic III (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=329378&page=16).

The name Gorgon gets applied to creatures that would be more accurately described as Catoblepas. It is a mid-sized creature, sluggish, with a heavy head and a face always turned to the ground. It's gaze, like that of the basilisk, was lethal, making the heaviness of its head quite fortunate. Its back has scales that protect the beast. Its stare or breath could either turn people into stone, or kill them.

Question to all:
Most of these do not have shadows... And I like shadows, and most of you probably like shadows also. No shadows looks aquward 99% of the time.

I tried using photoshop to add shadows; which ended up coming out all distorted because there is no way to do it right to a 2d image.
Since these are conversions of conversions of the original units, the only way these were originally converted was for them to do renders of the originals (but they did them with no shadows).
It is possible for me to do (close to the same) process, but with shadows.

The +'s of this are:
They would have shadows :)

The -'s are:
Each would take MUCH longer to convert (2-3+ days mostly render time compared to an hour or so)

Is it worth it?
My break from these is close to over... so what say you? :)

I say no shadows. Otherwise it'll take you years to get them all done. I think it's better to flood the database with new fantasy units rather than worry about the shadows.

Unbreasted Amazone (CFC unit conversion)

EDIT: CFC creator has been found thanks to Thorvald of Lym giving me the link to the thread!
NOTE: There was a CFC member who made this unit back in the day for Civ3. He also made this 'Unbreasted' version (as it was called :)) and made the gif's available in one of the forums here. I converted the gif's and here they are... but I cannot locate the thread, CFC member, of the original unit. I did no extensive check, but if anyone knows, please let me know so I can update the info here and on the database. Sounds, Large/Small PCX are missing because of this.

Unbreasted Amazone original files posted for download located here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=1338967&postcount=31).

Also, the gif's included the regular clothed (a top) version in one of the south animations, so nothing could be done about this. Not too noticeable, it was only in the Attack animation I think.

Agreed.. No shadows for the Infinitum units it is. As the thought of re-rendering units just for shadows brings terrifying shivers. I am going to restart converting units on and off.. I didn't realize the 2 week wait turned into this long of a time.

It's also a possibility to convert all Civ4 units to Civ3, as all the available tools needed to do so seem to be around. Of course I have not done one, so can't say for sure... the main thing that could possibly not allow such a thing to be possible is if the Civ4 Nif animations can't be imported over to a program such as 3ds Max. When I began a test to see if it's possible, this was the ONLY problem I ran into, but have not had time to continue looking for a solution.

Pit Fiend (unit conversion)

Pit fiends are the lords of the Nine Hells. They are the baatezu of the greatest power and the highest station. Pit fiends are found throughout the various layers of the Nine Hells, but are very rare on the upper layers.

Wherever they are found, these mighty lords hold a position of great authority and power. They sometimes command vast legions consisting of dozens of complete armies, leading them into battle against the tanar'ri.

The conversion process has been improved upon a bit... they take ever so slightly longer, but they look better in game. Initially, the edges of some of the units may have had a bit of a pixelized look. Any units converted from here on out no longer will have any of this, but edges will be (whats the word...) anti-aliased, so no rough edges.

This has been done to the Pit Fiend above... Most unit conversions probably look alright though, so I won't go back and redo them, it's more of a subtle improvement.

Also, in some gif's the units may seem to jump... they do not (or should not) do this in game. The conversions often require specific Offsets to be placed for each FLC, something that Animation shop cannot do easily when creating a gif (so I don't worry about doing it).

If anything odd is seen in game with any of these units, please let me know so I can fix it.

Statistically speaking, the creator is likely Ghengis Farb. (I feel like the unit's a "Welcome Home" to days of yore when men were men and sheep were afraid.)

You might want to change "Unbreasted" to "BareBreasted" as they have radically different meanings.

Keep up the good work!

Yes I was a little confused by the 'un' but I thought maybe that there was a version with very large breasts and that therefore this version was unbreasted in that it only has normal sized breasts.

Leopard (unit conversion)

The leopard is a graceful cat with a long body and relatively short legs. Its color varies from buff to tawny, and its spots are rosette shaped.

Leopards are solitary, inhabiting warm deserts, forest, plains, and mountains. They hunt both day and night preying on animals up to the size of large antelopes. They swim and climb well, and will often sit in treetops sunning themselves. Leopards will also drag their prey to safety in the treetops to devour in peace.

A skilled predator, the leopard is often threatened by human incursions. In areas where it is hunted, it is nocturnal.

Snakes are long, slender reptiles that can be found anywhere in the entire world, even in the coldest arctic regions.

There are basically two types of snakes, in all manner of sizes. Ice Troll (unit conversion)

This unit is dedicated to the user phungus420.

Trolls are horrid carnivores found in all climes, from arctic wastelands to tropical jungles. Most creatures avoid these beasts, since trolls know no fear and attack unceasingly when hungry. Their frame appears thin and frail, but trolls possess surprising strength. Their arms and legs are long and ungainly. The legs end in great three-toed feet, the arms in wide, powerful hands with sharpened claws.

The ice troll is a smaller, more intelligent (but still not very smart) relative of the normal troll, and is probably the result of magical experimentation. It closely resembles its more common cousin, but has semitransparent, very cold skin. Ice trolls are famous for being cunning, evil creatures which keep humans and demi-humans as livestock. Because ice trolls need water to regenerate, they never leave their lakes and rivers, and will create elaborate traps to lure their prey to them.

On a note to all... Infinitum site actually has more units than are shown, many of the units have their own recolours that would be quite difficult to do IMO. I will go ahead and do those as well.

For a little while, I will continue to do as many of these conversions as I can... and then I will get back to finishing my mod.

On a further note... I will attempt to figure out the whole process of doing a conversion from a NIF/KF file. These type of conversions would have shadows because they would be rendered from the models. Many games use the this format (Civ4 included), and so far the number of units able to be converted reach into the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, or even millions (j/k) :). But five thousand+ is definitely a realistic number... obviously it is impossible for me to do anywhere close to that many. So at that time, I could just do requests, and if there are no requests, I would do w/e I feel like.

Never forget your priorities - while we do apreciate the steady supply of new units, the M&M mod comes first! I don't want to see the mod abandoned close to the release (:scared:) like many MANY other great mods. Many abandoned for various reasons, real life reasons - and the time you could've spent modding was spent converting; loosing intrest - finding other games etc; or just simply burning out, growing tired of the complications of modding and taking a long possibly permanent break.

I see your point, but trust me... after all the hours I have dumped in, there is no way I will stop and not finish it! :) But the break in the mod is really not a break... I am still missing 5 or 6 units that I need, and I have found units I can use, but they are all in that NIF file format... So I need to figure that out in order to convert those units. So I figured I would convert other units as well in the meantime, since they can be done pretty quick. It will probably take a little bit of time to do so, but I also need to finish the terrain also which is about 80% done.

Abandoned mods are a horrible thing though, since everything the modder did is pretty much lost if they do not return to the site anymore.

Alright, I have completed the process. Any Nif unit seems to be able to be converted.

There are different versions of the Nif Format, so early versions have not been tested.

Oblivion uses Nif format as well... so since in Oblivion your character would change appearance depending on what he/she was wearing... it is likely this can be done in a conversion to create whatever type of character wanted.

Any Civ 4 unit can also be done... as well as a huge host of other games.

I will do a few to complete the units I need for CoMM3. I will also do a sample one first and post it up here.

Carrion Crawler (unit conversion)

The carrion crawler is a scavenger of subterranean areas, feeding primarily upon carrion. When such food becomes scarce, however, it will attack and kill living creatures.

The crawler looks like a cross between a giant green cutworm and a cephalopod. Like so many other hybrid monsters, the carrion crawler may well be the result of genetic experimentation by a mad, evil wizard.

Carrion crawlers are much-feared denizens of the underground world. They live in lairs, venturing out in search of carrion or food every few days. Some underground inhabitants such as goblins and trolls will make use of carrion crawlers by leaving the bodies of dead foes out in designated areas. This keeps the creatures at a good distance from their own homes and encourages them to "patrol" certain areas. Some orcs have been known to chain live prisoners near the lairs of these fearsome monsters.

No Tiger at the Infinitum site... If there is a Tiger used in NWN, I could convert that... I would have to check though. I can also convert the Civ4 Sabretooth Tiger, but I cannot find the Panther KF files (used for animation) in any of my Civ4 directories ?? The Civ4 Sabretooth may be able to just have it's tooth's removed in 3ds Max to make a normal Tiger.

Thank you Blue Monkey... excellent idea!
I will write up a post on how to convert these, it's nothing too difficult to do. It takes me 1 hour 15 minutes to do a full conversion, but with the number of units, doing them solo would take a long time.

The base programs needed to do an Infinitum conversion are Civ3FlcEdit, Steph's SBB, Flicster, a batch file renamer program, SixDice, WavePad Sound Editor, WinRar, graphic program (Photoshop, etc), and good knowledge of creating batch automation processes within your graphic program (are fairly easy to learn), also good working knowledge of creating palettes is good, especially if adding Civ Colours (adding Civ Colours requires use of a Palette Merger program)... Without using Batch Processing the time it would take to do a conversion would take half a day easy (and that is if you are 100% familiar with all programs and the process to do the conversion).

Also, I have an Offset PSD file (I can convert to PSP file also) I use so I can setup the Offsets of the created FLC's without having to start up the game to guess where they go. Each FLC with these conversions needs it's own Offset to be adjusted correctly. And the sound files need to be adjusted to match the animation times. It might sound like a lot, and was a pain as I figured out the best way to do them (you can see the initial conversions are crappy compared to what they would look like now, I will probably redo them all). I can also supply all ACT palette files which are often used (for PCX and for units).

I'll write up a full tuturial (hard to make it brief though, there are many steps :)) and post it here with links to the programs I use. All programs are freeware unless you are using PSP or Photoshop. Tuturial would have to be for Photoshop since I don't have PSP... but PSP does also have ability to do batch processing, I am not familiar with how PSP handles it exactly though.

I don't believe GIMP has the ability to do Batch processing of image files as PSP and Photoshop do, but I think there are plug-in's for GIMP that allow this.

This shows a conversion of the Shadow Thief (http://phrozenkeep.hugelaser.com/resources/infinitum/anims-shadowthief.html) from Infinitum.

Setup

1. Download the GIF file (shadowthief-gif.zip)

2. Extract the zip file of the unit.

3. Inside the extracted directory, create a folder (name does not matter, we will call the folder SThief).

4. From the download above _InfinitumConversion, inside this folder is an Animation Folders; copy these folders (AttackA, AttackB, etc) into the SThief folder.

Find the correct unit size for in Civ3

Open up just one of the GIF's into a graphics editing program. We do this to find the correct size of the final unit.
Open up the OffsetsTemplate.jpg (located in the _InfinitumConversion folder). The OffsetsTemplate shows the Civ3 unit circle with a couple sample units for comparsion.
Resize until you find the size you want. When you have found the right size of the unit, you should be able to see the percentage of the resize. In this case, I decided that the size of 70x57 is a good size, as you can see this is 70% of the original width size. Remember this percentage.
237688

Resizing and setting up the GIF's

Open up each GIF into JASC animation shop.
Hit Ctrl-A to select all frames of the gif. Go to Animation -> Replace color. Old color should be the background grey color. New color will be Magenta (255,0,255) for RGB, or FF00FF for HTML code. Make sure the Tolerance is set to 0! Hit OK.

Go to Animation -> Resize Animation. Select Percentage of Original. Type 70 into the width (we got this percentage above). I used the Bicubic Resample for this unit shown below, but Smart Resize is likely the best, since the edges may come out the smoothest. Hit Ok.

File -> Save Frames As. Select BMP output. I keep Long file names checked, and Append Leading zeros to frame index checked. Save frame number in file name should be checked also.
Save the file in the SThief/AttackA folder.

DO THIS for each gif, and place it in the correct folder. JASC animation shop will remember your settings, so doing this should be very quick and easy.
Attack 1.gif goes into the SThief/AttackA folder
Attack 2.gif goes into the SThief/AttackB folder
Attack 3.gif goes into the SThief/AttackC folder
Death.gif goes into the SThief/Death folder
Get Hit.gif goes into the SThief/Fidget folder
Neutral.gif goes into the SThief/Default folder
Walk.gif goes into the SThief/Run folder

Moving the BMP's into the direction folders for each animation

Now the biggest pain in the butt part. For each folder (AttackA, AttackB, AttackC, Death, etc...), you need to place the correct directions into their corresponding folders. So the SW directions need to go into the SW folder, etc.
The BMP images will be placed in the folder by this setup if your files are organized in alphabetical order.
SW images
NW images
NE images
SE images
S images
W images
N images
E images

You should be able to just highlight the images you want, and then drag and drop them into the folder (this is the same as cut and paste).

NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Expand Image Canvas Sizes
I still prefer to do a batch canvas resize of all these images. It only takes a couple minutes, and PSP / Photoshop are fully capable of doing these as well as many other programs. You DONT need to do this, but you SHOULD. The advantages are this:
- Doing this makes the Flicster bug impossible since the animation won't be able to hit the right edge (which causes a Flicster smear in the final FLC sometimes), and this bug is very annoying to have in a final result after all of your work.

Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm) can do this for you in a matter of seconds.

1, Open Irfanview, and go to File -> Batch Conversion/Rename...
2. Under Batch Conversion Settings, set Output format to BMP.
3. Check 'Use Advanced option (for bulk resize..)' and click the Advanced Button next to it.
4. Check 'Canvas Size' and click the Settings button. Under Border dimensions in pixels, make all of them 5. The Border Color should be made Mangenta (255,0,255 RGB values). Click OK.
5. Under MISC: Check 'Overwrite exisitng files', 'Create subfolders in destination folder'. Click OK. Go ahead and Save these settings.
6. For 'Output directory for result files, make it any folder you wish (I put mine right in the ShadowThief-gif directory).
7. Click 'Include subdirectories (for 'Add all'), and then go to your SThief folder, which has the AttackA, AttackB, AttackC, Death, etc folders and click the Add ALL button.
8. Click Start Batch, and it will add a small border around all images, to avoid the Flicster bug, which takes more time to fix than doing this.

Irfanview will make a new folder containing these files. Either overwrite the existing ones with these new ones, or simply use these new ones for the rest of the tuturial. I decided to delete the old ones and cut/paste the new ones into their places.

Creating the Storyboards

Once done, bring up the Sandris Storyboard Builder. Browse and select the shadowthief-gif folder. Click Create Storyboards.

Bring up Flicster and create each NEW storyboard. Make the output directory the SThief directory (where all of your Storyboards BMP's are. Make sure each new Storyboard name is the same as each animation (AttackA, AttackB, etc...).
For each animation, put in the correct dimensions and frame numbers. You can get this info by going into the animation folders and seeing it yourself.

Making the Palette

So here is what would need to be done. 2 ways are shown:

BEST WAY:
-----------
JASC Animation Shop can not make gif's with transparent background. So it cannot be used for this. So everything needs to be done in your graphics editor.

Open an unmodified GIF graphic into your graphics editor (a GIF with the grey background).
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=237943&d=1261338229

Make the grey background transparent (there are several ways to do this, I am not going to explain them all here).
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=237944&d=1261338229

Make sure the image is changed to RGB mode (if it has not been done already).

Resize the image to the proportions you had planned for the unit (this unit was 70%). It's edges should look somewhat blended.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=237945&d=1261338229

Index the image, load the Shadows palette (ShadowsOnly.act), and select 192 colors (no civ colors here, so last 4 rows are not used) and you have the perfect palette to use for all of your storyboards. It does not matter what the actual unit looks like at this point. The palette is all we are concerned about.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=237946&d=1261338244

Final Palette, save this palette, apply it to all storyboards.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=237947&d=1261338244

Some Tuturials on Palettes with GIMP:
How to make a working palette for pcx using the Gimp - Varwnos (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=215916)
GIMP palette recommendation to Varwnos palette info above - Micaelus (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6490252&postcount=4)
Cutting and Pasting with GIMP (Step by step Improvement creation) - Spacer One (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=241250) (has some palette and transperancy help in it)

Some changes may need to be made though, for units with No Civ Colors, 160 colors instead of 254 would need to be used, and the Shadow rows would have to be added in each time for GIMP.

NOT AS GOOD WAY, but works if the above cannot be done:
----------------------------------------------------------

Don't do any of the steps above for palette method #1.

Do all resizes using the regular Steph's SBB when making the Storyboards (Do NOT use the Sandris version). It resizes in an indexed mode, so edges of units may not be as smooth.

You still need to make the final palette, but no magenta pixel blending doing it like this. First 2 rows need to be the shadow rows, and the next 160 colors are unit colors. I still don't know if GIMP can do this automatically though... ??? I would think it should be able to do both, but seems it cannot from what I have read. I have been unable to find a better Palette editor for GIMP than the one that comes with 2.6 for this purpose. So this is a major time consuming process for GIMP users.

-------------------------

Storyboards

Since the SBB makes the borders as black, I change this color to a Magenta (since black may be used as a unit color in many instances, including this one). Use the Magic Wand to select the border, and then use the Paint Bucket tool to change it to this Magenta color (hex: C000FF, RGB 192,0,255).
Apply the palette we just made earlier to this file and save it as a PCX file under the same name. So for the Default.bmp, save it as Default.pcx (which overwrites the Default.pcx file Flicster created). NOTE: Units with NO civ colors must only have indexed palettes with 192 colors! They can have more but colors 193 through 256 must not be any color that is in the image.
Do this for each Storyboard BMP.

Open up each FXM file in Flicster, adjust the Frame Delay to your liking, and export as a FLC file.

Setting the Correct Offsets for each FLC

Set the Offsets of each FLC using Civ3FlcEdit and the OffsetsTemplate file as your guide.
As you can see in the below picture, paste the 1st image of each animation into this Offsets Template (SW directions work well, so paste the SW AttackA, SW AttackB, SW AttackC, SW Death, etc). Adjust each image so they all are aligned on top of each perfectly (best to make the feet align). You may need to make them slightly transparent to see through them, I set their opacity at 50%. Then measure (as shown in the pic) the width and height from the top left corner of the OffsetsTemplate image to the top left corner of the unit image, and this is the offsets to be put into the FLC in Civ3FlcEdit.
237473

Finishing steps

Now you need to make the Unit32.pcx, Large and Small PCX, and the sound files (which can be downloaded from the Infinitum site as well).
For Unit32.pcx, the palettes are provided to apply to the Unit32 file (for ones with CivColour and ones without). You can open up one of the SE BMP's and just crop/resize it down to 32x32. To keep in form with other unit32's, apply the palette FIRST and then resize.

The PCX.act palette is used for Large and Small PCX. Just load this up for these images and make sure to use all 256 colors. Large PCX should be 128x128 (white backgrounds preferable), and Small PCX 32x32. For these it is better to apply palette AFTER resizing to appropriate size.

Sound files should be save as 22050Hz, 16 bit, Mono. Make sure to setup the INI file properly, add a ReadMe stating you converted this unit, and that it is a Bioware/Interplay unit. Make sure you test the unit in gmae to ensure it looks good.

If any questions, please ask... I still do the units in a slightly different way because I feel the results are a bit better, but it is in essence the same procedure.

The Final unit using this exact procedure looks like this:

They're great, Tom. I'll probably use more than one myself. Are there more than one Minotaur in these fine RPG games ? I converted one myself a while back but I don't remember if it was the only one.

There is a Tiger unit for Civ-3. I don't remember who made it.

There is a Tiger unit for Civ-4, a reskin of one of the panther units. That one's by me. :D

Aasimar (Woman with Knife) (unit conversion and civ colouration)

Aasimar, tieflings' opposite number, are the children of celestials - the inhabitants of the Upper Planes - and mortals. They carry a spark of goodness in their very flesh, yet some of them turn away from their heritage. Though they are generally paragons of virtue, one shouldn't trust them without reserve.

Dress converted to Civ Colors.

The TUTURIAL - Converting units from the Infinitum Site (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8729926&postcount=142) has been completed and posted.

I did not show tuturial on fully completing the units by making storyboards and going into palettes, etc... or on how to create Large/Small PCX and Unit32 PCX files. Anyone doing conversions should be familiar with all of that to an extent.

Thanks for the tuto, Tom.

It's quite complicated but results look very good.

I used to do it a lot more quickly by dumping individual sprites (converted into BMP with an old ACDsee shareware) in direction folders and using Steph's SBB to compile, resize and replace background colors for all of them at once.

But by doing that, I'm bypassing all resizing correction and units look a lot less smooth.

That is what I did when I started... but some of them came out looking somewhat pixelized. Some looked good, but some came out looking quite bad. By resizing ahead of time in RGB mode, the edges come out much more smoothly. By having a single palette applied to all Storyboards allows easier changes/recolours in the future. I think Steph's SBB resizes images while they are in a Paletted Indexed Mode, whereas resizing in RGB mode blends the edges.

I figured an extra 15+ minutes on each one is time well worth it in the end. Of course, it's only because I've been doing it now for some months I am used to it, it may be somewhat complicated initially unless someone puts some good time into it.

Tom

My guess would put that dress in the industrial age, actually. It looks very much like a saloon girl with a wide bustle: http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:7C1hUEXYypQDMM:http://www.costumeshopper.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/56620.jpg But the saloon style was based on an even earlier version a little more like the one you posted, so you might find that general style as early as the days of Fanny Hill's London or as Late as Lautrec's Paris - making the time frame maybe 1750 - 1900? Roughly, the industrial age.

Thanks for another very very useful unit Tom!

Hi Tom, thought I'd post a list of requests. Most of these are not particularly urgent. Mostly just stuff I like and will probably have a use for in the future. So if your converting stuff and don't have anything in particular in mind you could do some of these. Otherwise feel free to ignore it.

Abandoned mods are a horrible thing though, since everything the modder did is pretty much lost if they do not return to the site anymore.

Tom

200% agreed. Abandoned mods, even for the most broken of games, makes me lose sleep at night. I actually mod and download mods than actually play the games (vanillas anyway) and my mod folders for all my games probably take up more hard drive space than the games alone. Keep up the good work Tom.

This post has brought my imagination to light. And furthermore, I know of a game with a better tiger, (more fitting anyway) than Civ 4. It's a little game from Blue Fang called Zoo Tycoon (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo_Tycoon)
The expansion even has dinosaurs that in my view, look more realistic than PTW's!!

So here are some good animations you could look out for.

Tyrannosaurus
Tiger
Gorilla
Lion
Grizzly Bear
SuperCroc (It IS in the game)
Hippo
Crocodile
Penguin
Polar Bear
American Black Bear
Mandrill ( like a baboon)
Jaguar
Yeti (it's in there too)
Bigfoot
Unicorns( don't ask)
triceratops
Ankylosaur
Flamingo (don't ask me how you could use this!!)
Chimpanzee
African Elephant
Asian Elephant
Gray Wolf
Moose (my sister was once bit by one.)
American Bison
Ostrich
Cheetah
Giraffe
Zebra
Wildebeest
Rhinoceros
Reindeer
Mountain Lion
Orangutan
Komodo Dragon

Crap! I get the same screen as you Tom. And at the top of the page it says you must have a file planet account to download this file. But it also says you can register for free on the left-hand side of the page. I think I had to register the first time I downloaded one of these units to play with. They did site maintenance recently. Maybe you just need to do the free registration again (if you did it in the first place).

@Balthasar - I moved it over to Industrial... she looks quite similar to the girl you posted!

& if you think the unit seems too fanciful look into the sordid history of Gallus Mag, Sadie the Goat, & Hell-cat Maggie.

That is not a group I would want to get into a scuffle with! :)

@PredatorFett - Wow... no joking there. Zoo Tycoon has some incredible looking units. I will see if I can find out what format the units are in.. or if anything is available online, and perhaps pick it up cheap somewhere if the units can be converted easily. It seems that there is a editor that comes with it to change or edit units, so it is probably pretty easy. Great info, animals and dinos galore!

Coul you make buffalo or oxen. Many battles were won by leading the cattle into the enemy shieldwall. Thank You

If Zoo Tycoon that PredatorFett mentioned has Buffalo and oxen, then it is a definite possibility!

Thanks, looks like I got worried a bit too soon.... it must have just been maintenance. Site is back up. I'm going to d/l all the files just in case. The current method I use to convert is a bit on the complex side. Supa gave me some tips (very useful tips, thanks Supa!) that would cut off an easy 20+ mins to do each one as is, and perhaps more. Plus not near the number of programs needed so it should be all around easier. I am going to do a new process to see how simple/quick I can get it, and repost the tuturial. I could use a simpler/quicker way myself. :) Time saved means more units more quickly.

Sailor (unit conversion)

Men of the sea are usually found on or near open waters. If encountered inland, sailors may be ferrymen on streams or rivers. Sailors may be armed with knives, short swords, cutlasses, or belaying pins but seem to enjoy nothing more than a good old drunken bar room brawl.

No Civ Colours. A future version will be made with Civ Colours.

From the link Balthasar left, it said that the units use the NIF format and then another format for the skins. With this in mind, they could be converted through 3ds Max. Did you get the sprites out of the game? Or somewhere else? It looks like there are some downloads available on various sites, but I don't know yet what formats they may be in.

The Easy as possible tuturial (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8729926&postcount=142) has been put up. It saves me tons of time.

Thanks to Supa for his help with the better easier way to do conversions. If there is any easier way to do any of it, please let me know. If any clarification needs to be made on any of it, please let me know as well.

The Shadow Thief unit will be uploaded shortly. EDIT: Fileplanet now seems to have all the Infinitum files set up as being ADULT rated files.. so nothing can be downloaded from there. I'll have to wait until they fix this problem as well to finish the unit. This has happened before in the past, and it took them a day or so to fix it last time.

Also, just so all know... units which are already completed and will also be uploaded are:
FireElemental
IceGolem
Golem
Tanar'ri, Marilith
Shadow/Greater Shadow (IWD version)
WaterElemental
Imp

Re: Zoo Tycoon

Found a website called Zoo Tycoon Unleashed (http://zoxaeus.com/ZTForums/index.php?showtopic=15808) which might answer some questions about it for you.

This was on my favorites tab back when I still had the game. :(

It's possible we aren't talking of the same game. I was referring to the first Zoo Tycoon, a 2D game. [looking at the link] Yes, I thought it was an old website for new 2D animals for ZT1.

Thanks for getting that easier tutorial up so quick Tom. It certainly uses less programmes than the first version of the tutorial. I'll start working on it as much as I can this weekend, if I can download some of the units.

EDIT: Having no trouble downloading units from the site. However, the first unit I tried only had two different animations. Walk and Neutral. Have you had this problem with other units? It was the Elminster unit. A pitty as he looks really cool. Found another unit to work on Salabesh the Onyx which seems to have all the differet animation sets needed.

Looks like they fixed it already. For Gif's I think the first one I tried to do was missing animations, so I went the DCC route. The DCC files have all animations for every single one, but they are more difficult to convert. I will go ahead and do the Elminster, since I already took the DCC tuturial down.

Hopefully most Gif's have all animations.

Thanks Tom. That would be super if you did the Elminster unit! I think I actually came across other units missing gifs animations before so it might be a bit of a problem but hopefully it's only a small percentage of the units.

About half way through the tutorial Tom. One small problem. In JASC Animation Shop when I recoloured the background to pink it also recoloued some grey areas on the unit. Just a design on the units chest and parts of it's belt. I'm not going to worry about it now as I just want to try and complete the unit and see how it comes out. But for future reference what would be the best way to fix this? Will I have to mannually correct every frame in the storyboards or is there a quicker way?

Is the Tolerance on 0 under the Replace menu? If it is not it will select other colors as well that are close to the transparent color. EDIT: Apologies, it looks like I forgot to add that into the tuturial page, I went ahead and put it in there... I think JASC has tolerance set to 30 or something until it is changed, let me know if this fixes it.

In the case the belt color is exactly the same as the background... I would have to check it out, if the tolerance to 0 does not work, let me know what unit it is so I can check it out.

A question for you and other civ modders are there other sites like this out there were we could convert other units? I would be willing to take a stab at them if there is.

I haven't found any other sites like the Infinitum Site. There probably are other units around in GIF format (or other formats) that are capable of being converted, but probably not a list like this one. Infinitum converted many units out of actual games... I have done this as well, but it takes much longer. I found a site where a few NWN were converted, but only a few, and I have already mostly converted those to post up.

Important regarding the tuturial...!

To avoid the Flicster bug, which smears unit graphics if a pixel gets too close to the right edge, and is a pain to correct... I have added how to avoid this in the tuturial by using the free common program Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm)!

Instructions have been added to the tuturial showing exactly what needs to be done.

In a few minutes time, you can have Irfanview add a small border to all images so the Flicster bug cannot occur. I highly recommend doing this if converting any unit!

Thanks Tom. I just got home so will resume my work. I'll try setting the tolerance to 0. I suspect that will fix it. Also I'll use Irfanview to avoid the flicster bug. I'm having to use only GIMP so I can't do that batch canvas resize thing in Photoshop. I did get an oldish copy of photoshop off a friend but turns out the disk is buggered so can't use it. I might still try and buy it, but if I can get GIMP to do everything needed for this and your terrain stuff I might not bother. I'll have to start investigating plugins.

Cheers

EDIT: By the way I'm working on Salabesh the Onyx. Just letting you know to avoid the possiblility of us working on the same unit, however unlikely that may be given the large number of available units to choose from.

EDIT 2: Tolerance 0 fixed the pink belt problem.

EDIT 3: It may be my imagination but 'smart resize' seems to give a slightly smoother result than 'bicubic' resample' when resizing the frams in Animation Shop.

Good to hear.. Gimp can do everything required now... so no need for Photoshop. From what Blue Monkey said, Gimp can open up PSP or PSD files, so I will find a plugin for Gimp when I start working on the PSP/Gimp Templates.

I haven't checked yet the results of the different resample options. The Shadow Thief above used the bicubic method. Whatever method leaves a smoother border is what is wanted, and Shadow Thief border is not quite as smooth as when I did resizes in Photoshop. So Smart resize is probably the way to go, I will update the tuturial.

EDIT: BAD & GOOD news about Elminster - I downloaded the DCC file and that contained only 2 files as well... the Walk and Default. Per the Readme file, it stated this unit was Intended for townfolk replacement for Diablo2/LOD. Baulders Gate was were it came from, so to get the other sequences, the unit would have to be converted directly from Baulders Gate, which is possible to do though.

I can live without Elminster for now. Perhaps in the future I'll look into it. I think I can use Salabesh the Onyx instead. I just liked Elminster but it's not escential.

Having palete issues which are preventing me from finishing my conversion. I always have palete issues. Its stems from a fundamental lack of understanding of how paletes work. So I have made my story boards and I can't use your .act file in GIMP. I assume this file is an automated process for photoshop. So I tried other methods for getting the palete right on the bmp file then pasting it onto the pcx file created by Flicster. But even though the palete seems to be right, 256 colours and the right green and pink in the last two slots, when I try to create the flic in flictser it just makes it crash.

Anyway will try again tomorrow. Rest of the tutorial work beautifully for me though. Very well set out Tom.

Have attached the AttackA.pcx I was working on. Perhaps you can take a look at it when you have some spare time, tell me what's wrong with it.

In the mean time I really need to read more about paletes because my lack of understanding is really holding me back. I keep having these same problems with units and terrain, though I don't seem to have any problems when I worked on my terrain buildings and improvement graphics.

Palettes are really not that difficult of things to work with, but I initially got massively confused when trying to work with palettes in GIMP also.

From what I can see, GIMP uses a special palette file with a .gpl extension. GIMP can use ACT files, by importing them; but it can only import ACT files that use 256 colors... it cannot import an ACT file that uses less colors than that. Also, it sometimes has problems importing files that have 256 colors, it seems because if some of the colors are the same, it cannot read them, or they are not in quite the right format. This goes for Paletted PCX files as well (which GIMP can read).

I'm going to write a few .gpl palette files for you so that you can use them. I'll try to upload them soon once I test them myself in GIMP to ensure they work.

EDIT: Unless I am missing something here with GIMP, it seems that it is unable to load a preset palette with 32 colors (e.g.) and then automatically fill in the rest of the colors with what is in the picture itself. I can load a palette, but it only loads those colors, and allows none others. I created a sample gpl palette, but it doesn't make sense to use it, since I cant do anything with it. ??? Am I missing something here? Do the colors need to be added each time to every pic?

I think for palettes, everyone would be better off using a different program that is easier to use palette wise. And use Gimp for the rest. Many free programs are available that are far easier and much more compatible with all types of formats and options.

Re: Gimp palettes

Have you checked out the GIMP plugins repository (http://registry.gimp.org/faceted_search/results/palette)?

tom2050
Dec 19, 2009, 06:06 PM
I found the Palette generator on there earlier, but I am unsure exactly what it does from the description. :)

It generates palette by following the harmonic schemes of color: monochromatic, complementary, triadic, tetrad and analogous.
Options:
- you can choose between the digital wheel (RGB) and the real wheel (RYB);
- you can choose whether to use the color "web safe" or not;
- you can see in real time in a preview page the combination of colors;
- you can save a Gimp or Inkscape palette.
Required python libraries: :
- GrapeFruit-0.1a3
INSTALLATION: copy file gimp_palette_generator.py to the standard place for plugins (folder "plug-ins").

I still use TilesetPal (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/info.php?levelID=3723)quite often for mergers, but It can also be used easily enough to apply palettes to PCX and BMP files, and then save the files as such. It can do so pretty quickly, and is quite easy to use. I would have to check out each GIMP plug-in to see which does what though, since it is often easier to do everything in a single program.

TilesetPal can not use palettes with 'unused spots' though, so in the case of units that have no civ colors, the last 64 spaces would just need to be filled with an unused color (such as a green color, 01FF00 would probably do fine). I'm not at my house though, so I cant look at it until tomorrow.

---------------------------

EDIT: TilesetPal cannot be used fully for what is needed, so a GIMP plug-in it seems will need to be found to extend the base GIMP palette capabilities. I'll have to browse through the GIMP plugins repository and find something suitable.

This is the reason... to get the absolute best palette for the unit, which does greatly increase the quality of the unit in-game:
1. The unit is resized in JASC animation shop, which means the edges blend with the Magnenta background. This is something that is desirable, because the blended edges will become the first row of Magenta shadows, giving a anti-alias'd look.
2. To get ONLY the unit colors, the creator needs to make the Grey background transparent (or one of the original unaltered GIFs), and then do a resize, so now the unit has it's perfect colors. The pixels around the unit has nothing to blend with since the BG is transparent, and then you have the exact unit colors.

I just now thought, the best way to easily get a transparent resize is to do it in JASC animation shop. I think you can change to Grey background to transparent, and then do a resize (do this only once) to get the unit color palette. EDIT: JASC Animation Shop cannot do this.

But we still need a GIMP plugin to be able to load the initial shadows palette (ShadowsOnly.act), so GIMP can then apply the remainder of the unit colors (from the transparent BG unit image in 2.) to get the full working palette (which will be applyed to every Storyboard).

This is a more detailed explanation of creating the unit palette from the tuturial, and has been added in there.

237943

Make the grey background transparent (there are several ways to do this, I am not going to explain them all here).
237944

Make sure the image is changed to RGB mode (if it has not been done already).

Resize the image to the proportions you had planned for the unit. It's edges should look somewhat blended.
237945

Index the image, load the Shadows palette, and select 192 colors (no civ colors here, so last 4 rows are not used) and you have the perfect palette to use for all of your storyboards. It does not matter what the actual unit looks like at this point. The palette is all we are concerned about.
237946

Final Palette, save this palette
237947

Don't do any of the steps above.

Do all resizes using the regular Steph's SBB (Do NOT use the Sandris version).

(see above GIMP palette tuturials) ???

Balthasar

That reminds me of some Gimp tricks -

Guaranteed way to make transparent backgrounds in GIMP:

1. Copy the image.
2. Use Create from Clipboard to create a new image.
3. Edit > Select All > Copy again..
4. Create from Clipboard again..
5. Now erase the background color. The new background will be transparent.

Q & S (quick and sloppy) indexing in Gimp:

1. find a properly indexed image with roughly the same colors as the image you want to index.
2. Paste a new image on top of it. The result will retain the indexing of the original.
3. Don't use this on terrain pcxs or it comes out horribly wrong.

A final note: the GAP (Gimp Animation Package) used to (as of vers. 2.2) include a Gflic plug-in that would allow you to edit flc animations directly. Since it's open source, I always held out the hope that a programmer here could take a look at it, and perhaps modify it to suit our putposes (to allow palette changes, for instance). I know I've discussed it before and didn't get far...

@Balthasar - the Deionarra Ghost unit has more issues than Time magazine. There are large portions of her body that are missing in the Gif's and DCC files. I'm pretty sure this is not meant to be, because missing portions are filled in at certain angles of the animation. Here is a preview, I will complete it if you still want it; she will just be able to be seen through in certain portions; may actually look a bit unique.

Sahuagin / Sea Devil (unit conversion)

The sahuagin are sometimes referred to as "sea devils" or "devil men of the deep." They dwell in warm salt waters at depths of 100 to 1,500 feet. Sahuagin are predatory in the extreme, and they pose a threat to all living things because they kill for sport and pleasure as well as for food. They abhor fresh water and strongly dislike any form of light.

My guess is that that's deliberate - to make her more 'ghostly', she is transparent wherever shadows would be. That suggests three or four possible courses of action:

a. Make her 'as is' with the holes, then see if that works in gameplay...
she is, after all, a ghost - so not entirely on our corporal plane to begin with, and being able to see through her from certain angles wouldn't matter alot if she's still recognizable. And it could be how she's supposed to look.

b. fill in the holes with neon green (shadow) color, to add missing shadows.
The shadow color was used to great effect on the 'Ghost Hunter' unit

c. 'fill in' the holes with Cn'P pieces.
perhaps from a different animation, same angle...

d. Try recoloring it; see if the missing colors come out...

e. move on; pick it up later.
not my favorite option, but understandable if you don't want to Richard with it.:smoke:

Edit: Thanks for making the Sahuagin, Tom! It fills a huge hole for me.

Infinitum is a excellent site but the more the better.

I have yet to find a source with so many ready to go GIF graphics. All of the Infinitum grahpics were rendered from Bioware games for Diablo 2.

ALthough I have not done an exhaustive search either. I believe Zoo Tycoon had animals that I may figure out how to do, but I'm not sure what format they are (they may be GIF). There are many games that can be converted, some games are free, most are not.

Many graphics from games usually require using 3DS MAX or something to render the 3d models, which takes longer and is more time consuming to do than a GIF... I've done this for only a few units to date.

If anyone finds anything, please post... I will browse this thread again soon, and make a list to post on the first page with any and all sites that have convertable gifs.

Here is a list of games on Wikipedia that have isometric graphics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_with_isometric_graphics

I have already tried converting graphics from some of these, such as Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic... but in this case I was unable to because AoW: SM units only have 6 directions.

Well, the Phrozen Keep has all kinds of Diablo II graphics editors/extractors.... It would be easy to convert bad guys, i.e. the Fallen, Dark Rouges, etc, but not any of the Player Characters, since I know from experience that each part of a Player Character class (i.e. Amazon, Barbarian, etc) are contained in separate files that are merged together somehow (i.e. the torso, legs, arms, head, etc are all separate files for each possible piece of equipment that the character can wear).....

I personally do not know exactly what their stance is, but I didn't pursue any further conversions since that time. Although there are some nice units there, anyone else know why Blizzard may have such a tough stance?

Those conversions are pretty easy to do also, since they are pretty much the same thing as doing the Infinitum conversions.

That is how most companies do it. They just send a cease letter or fax and that is the end, unless it is ignored. It is cheaper for them than taking action. My friend years back had a store selling CD's and got a cease fax from Allen Klien to stop a Ruby and the Romantics CD.

How they knew about it, I have no idea and they want the money he got from the sales. I doubt it was more than 75 dollars. I could see, if it was the Stones stuff he had the rights to, how many Ruby and the Romantic CD's could be sold?

Tom the angel looks more like a Homm4 angel than III.

Yes, it is converted from HoMM4 :) It is the closest thing available I could find for the CoMM3 mod.

Well, let me look and check around to try to get a feel for how Blizzard may react. I could maybe post one unit, and then wait some time and see... but if they are highly likely to send a cease and desist, I don't want to invest alot of time doing those conversions for them to not be able to be used.

EDIT: Can't really find anything on Blizzard (could be looking in the wrong place...), I have had the Izual completed conversion.. should I post it? The sound effects are not named in the MPQ file that contains the Sound FX, so I have no clue which goes to which unit. Since there are over 2300+ wav files with no unique names, if I do post Izual, no sounds will be included (going through that list to find the right ones is just way too time consuming).

But you are right about the Hydralisk, that was posted in 2007 and still there.

I'll keep AtomicGamer in mind if it is a good upload site, nothing worse than getting bombarded with popups.

Fileplanet has quite often been saying that those unit files are Adult files and that you are not 18 so can't download them, then they fix it, then it happens again :)

You won't have those problems with atomicgamer.

Had another go at getting GIMP to do a palette for my conversion, but failed. I still haven't found a way to import a palette so I had a go at manually making a palette for the unit. It took ages but it still just crashes Flicster when I try to load the FXM file. I guess I must have made a mistake when I put the palette together.

The way I did it was to look at the palette from one of your conversions. That gave me all the colours for the last two rows (shadows). And like your unit's palette I made the first four lines black as there is no civ colour. Then to get the unit colours I loaded one of the original gifs, made the background magenta, scaled it down to the same size as my unit frames and then indexed it to 160 colours. Then I manually put all these colours into the palette with the shadows and black for civ colour. I applied this to the pcx file generated by flicster then copied and pasted my storyboard from the bmp file. Everything seemed to work. My carefully constructed palette remained the same. But still flicster crashes. It can open the file but as soon as I look at the preview or try to export it to a flic format flicster exits to desktop.

Have attached a screenshot of my manually constructed palette. Let me know if you can see any obvious problems or if I'm doing something wrong Tom.

Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. Hope you had a great Chirstmas and have a happy new year! :)

Cheers

hello

/Orkel

Yes, it is fixable, but in order to add the shadow, you would have to do a conversion directly from the Bioware games themselves, instead of the Infinitum site (Thus re-converting the whole unit). E.G., in the case of NWN, the mdl file would have to be imported into something such as 3ds Max, shadows would have to be added manually, and each frame and direction rendered.

I have done this for the Gorgon, Demon Torment, Basilisk, etc... Takes a bit of time though.

It's not even possible for me to do this solo to add shadows for them all... so I decided not to. Too many units and would take too long (Civ 6 would be out :)).

Hmmm... can you upload the FXM and PCX Storyboard file here, or PM them to me. I don't think the Palette would be capable of crashing Flicster, if Flicster was fine before.

You have Build 18 of Flicster? Build 17 had a problem where the animation time was stuck at 0, causing crashes.

I wasn't able to find a plug-in that makes the palette system easier. Anyone know of a freeware program that is pretty robust in it's palette creating/editing abilities? If one can be found, it may be better to use another program solely to make the palettes.

I was successful with the shadow. It was easy, however it took some times becuse all the frames. It didnt take that long thanks to the "Action Record" funktion in photoshop cs4

Shadow looks good. I had no luck getting a proper shadow in Photoshop, especially for units that fly, or jump, etc because the shadow cannot stay in the correct place on the ground without a lot of manual adjusting.

For a ground unit only, it's perfect. :goodjob:

Tom what version of photoshop are you using? There are easy ways of projecting and distorting a shadow to make it appear accurate.

tom2050

CS1 (v8.0)

There are probably filters for CS, but the only thing I have been able to find to do something of the sort is Transform tool, which lets you scale, rotate, skew, perspective, etc to attempt to get the unit shape into a shadow shape.

Problem was: if a unit is a flying unit, which lands and takes off, etc... shadow is not really do-able with anything CS offers (that I could find). Strictly ground units probably would be okay.

I suppose it could be done using the blending option for a specific layer as well... which I have not tried doing. Using a drop shadow I think might work.

What method of doing so did you have in mind?

Tom

BadKharma
Jan 03, 2010, 06:18 PM
The transform tool should work, remember as a unit jumps or fly's it will create a smaller shadow the higher it gets. The easiest way it to copy the layer the image is on fill it with the shadow colr and then transform it. If you canvas is large enough you can use the drop shadow but be careful of the light direction.
BTW the layer blending options work well for increasing contrast.

tom2050

Okay, thanks to the help of you all, Shadows can indeed be made pretty easily and pretty realistically in Photoshop. For units that fly around etc, it should be able to be done, but would take a bit more time to do properly. Land units should be quick and simple.

I will start adding shadows therefore to all new conversions... but will add them to the units already done first.

Here is an example of a windmill that had no shadow, but was Photoshop'd in.

Silver Dragon (unit conversion)

Silver dragons are kind and helpful. They will cheerfully assist good creatures if their need is genuine. They often take the forms of kindly old men or fair damsels when associating with people.

At birth, a silver dragon's scales are blue-gray with silver highlights. As the dragon approaches adulthood, its color slowly lightens to brightly gleaming silver. An adult or older silver dragon has scales so fine that the individual scales are scarcely visible. From a distance, these dragons look as if they have been sculpted from pure metal.

In reference to shadows:

Doing a shadow like Orkel showed:
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4561/walkingf.gif

is perfectly possible.

I tried to get a shadow created in the way actual 3d model shadows show using Photoshop; which is perfectly possible and easy to do for single static images or photographs, BUT, for 3d animated objects, there are huge problems because everytime the image moves (it's feet) there is no possible way to 'anchor' portions of the shadow. This cause the shadow to move unpredictably and does not look good.

Here is a sample of this done:
http://f.imagehost.org/0771/FaerieDragonShadows.gif
As can be seen, the shadow jumps since there is no way to 'anchor' it at the bottom (that I know of, or have found)

I could do the same as Orkel did, and have the actual unit just slightly project a shadow NW, with downside being the shadow never matches the feet position, and in some cases may look strange against light colored terrain.

Or I could just add a small generic elipitical shadow underneath every unit, which would be of similar style and shape to the actual unit, but would be static very light shadow, just to give depth.

Tom

Wolfhart
Feb 24, 2010, 04:36 AM
Go for the small generic elliptical shadow then, it's less trouble and will still do very much to enhance the unit :)

So that's where you got that sweet balloon - there are some nice air units in there, like the Air Galley (http://aow2.heavengames.com/aowsm/gameinfo/units/humans.shtml#air_galley) and the Forceship (http://aow2.heavengames.com/aowsm/gameinfo/units/syrons.shtml#forceship)...

Actually they have a ton of really nice nice units.

Can you get a Pit Guard (http://aow2.heavengames.com/aowsm/gameinfo/units/nomads.shtml) from that game? Colored green, he'd make a passable Thark*, a unit we've been looking (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7591517#post7591517) for. At least he'd be a useable placeholder. At least he's got four arms, and that's a start.
