View Full Version : DRM?! Why?

Why does the 3.19 patch remove the requirement to have the CD on Windows but doesn't seem to do the same for Mac? Have I read this wrong or not installed the update properly?

It's incredibly frustrating as I play it on a MacBook Pro after playing on Windows through Bootcamp. I hated dual booting, but I also hate having to be tied to a disc which it seems the Windows version no longer requires.

It's the worst kind of DRM as it's easy to break if you're a pirate and a pain if you actually buy the software.

Sorry if I missed something or didn't install the Mac update properly.

Speculation ... I have no inside track ...

1. Firaxis are the original developers. They can dictate whether Aspyr are permitted to remove the DVD protection. They don't have to do so at the same time as they do it for Windows versions.

2. BtS for Windows is now on the Civ4 Complete compilation. Firaxis have already sold most of what they were going to sell at full price, and so their lost revenue from piracy is considerably smaller. BtS has only just come out for the Mac, and is still commanding full price on this platform. Aspyr may feel that the revenue losses would be too great if they removed protection now.

It's never bothered me, the disc lives permanently in the drive.

I'm sure it's because they're trying to prevent piracy on a new release to the Mac. That's understandable; I just think that there are better ways to do it. It's relatively easy for pirates to crack and create nocd versions so it's not too much of a deterrent for them. Those of us who paid for it are required to carry a disc around.

It's not a huge burden but I do travel with my MacBook frequently. I do have down time at airports, trains, hotels etc where I can play Civ. Carrying a disc is just a hassle and increases the possibility of losing or scratching it.

I always carry out my macbookpro outside, travelling and so and it's a peine to always take the DVD with me :undecide:

Lucky you ! 3 Macintosh at home ( 2 MacBook Pro and 1 iMac ) and both laptops have their CD reader out of order !!!

So, I'm really a kind of Anti-DRM protection fan . DRM = Nuts and non common sense these days ! :satan:

Tell Aspyr. No one here can do anything about it.
