View Full Version : UN Survey
Sultan Bhargash Oct 09, 2002, 04:57 PM Forgive me if this has been posted here before, just got it and think it is hilarious and applicable:
Question asked in a world-wide UN survey:
>
> "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food
> shortage in the rest of the world?"
>
> The survey was a huge failure:...
>
> In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
>
> In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
>
> In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
>
> In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
>
> In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
>
> In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
>
> In the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant.

Dynamic Cow Oct 10, 2002, 05:11 AM that must be one of the most posted joke on the CFC boards. its still funny though. :)
gerryandersson Oct 10, 2002, 07:41 AM Cool:lol:
omichyron Oct 10, 2002, 11:18 PM Yeah. And when they circulated a poll about whether the UN should support US military action against Iraq, it failed too.
The Americans didn't know what the UN meant
The Eastern Europeans didn't know what support meant
The Western Europeans didn't know what military action meant
etc. :p
A simple joke format, but I think I have even seen before exactly the same joke as the one you posted.
RufRydyr Oct 11, 2002, 05:50 AM That's hilarious. How come I've never seen the things that people say are 'the most posted' or whatever?
Dell19 Oct 11, 2002, 09:37 AM Because you don't read enough threads?

So fun in english as it is in Portuguese.
I wonder how some OT regular posters would react if they saw that about americans :) ;)
Azale Oct 25, 2002, 05:09 AM I don't care, its still hilarious
Sim_One Oct 26, 2002, 11:43 PM I may sound ignorant, but I don't understand the joke about South America. Someone care to explain it to me?
Portuguese Oct 28, 2002, 02:55 PM South America has faced SEVERAL and continuous dictatorships all arround the continent till a few years ago.
Military dictatorships were strong and surelly not nice (much worst than today's Cuban regime...)
So, they didn't know "please" ;)
Not ignorant: you'll probably remember Pinochet and think:
"Of course. How could I forget?!?" ;)
SKILORD Oct 29, 2002, 01:08 PM
Sim_One Oct 29, 2002, 06:38 PM Well I knew about Pinochet and Peron but I think that joke was little bit desperate since South America isn't the only place with a history of dictators.

Lt. 'Killer' M. Oct 30, 2002, 06:02 AM Sim_One: also, when i learned Spanish I was told NEVER to say por favor if I didn't want to give away the fact that I was a foreigner......
Sim_One Oct 31, 2002, 09:04 AM Well Spanish isn't only spoken South America now is it?
Lt. 'Killer' M. Oct 31, 2002, 09:13 AM Yep, Brasil speaks a Portuguese dialect, and there is also Spain.... but still, most spanish speakers live in middle and southern america.
Sim_One Nov 02, 2002, 03:35 PM Well it's still pretty surprising to me. Places like Spain, Argentina and Venezuela had always been very polite and welcoming places in my impressions. But I guess I'll take a different perspective now. And Killer, the tip about por favor is certainly helpful since I'm also a Spanish student! :goodjob: But still, wouldn't my strong English accent just give away my foreigner status?
Lt. 'Killer' M. Nov 03, 2002, 08:28 AM Sim_One: I do not think they are rude - it is just they are helpful and polite WITHOUT saying 'please'. But if you take their politicians, all those dictators of southern America.......
as for the accent: I have heard so many different accents of Spanish - oh well....
