View Full Version : Graphics Issues

New to the forum, so please forgive me if I post this in the wrong place.

System:
MacBook
Mac OS X 10.6.1 (Leopard)
2.16 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo

Civilization 4, original disc/original release

Problem:
Civilization leaders appear as a red screen with floating eyes/eyebrows, mouths and occasional other features or background. Units in city screen appear red and fragmented.
Minimap is black and shows minimal characteristics.

I have it set for low resolution, anti-aliasing at 0 (I cannot change it from that).
The game worked for me about 3 months ago, but in that time I crashed my HD, had it replaced and then added Leopard. Just reloaded the game (and the 1.74 update, yes, the issue occurs in both 1.74 and 1.61).

Aspyr is closed atm and i'm really itching to play, any help would be hugely appreciated. Previous topics browsed rather extensively, but found nothing that would help so far. I can post more info if needed, just let me know. Please do make instructions relatively complete, I can make sense of anything but do not specialize in computers.

Thanks!

Welcome :wavey:

It sounds as if you have Intel integrated graphics, since the software will not let you increase the graphics settings. However, they don't usually give this level of problems.

Do you have the latest update from Aspyr - not just version 1.74, but the downloadable new application here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=314533)?

Alan,
Thanks for both your welcome and the prompt response. I would love to try the patch, but every time I click it (or even the other one, for warlords which I do not have), it links to the Aspyr page with an error.
Is there any other way to get to the patch or am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: I have just sent a ticket into Aspyr as well, will let you know what becomes of it.

Hmm. It looks as if they've withdrawn the reissued application files. I guess that means that Apple has fixed the Quicktime problem they were intended to solve. However, I wonder if they included other fixes as well. I'll be interested to hear what Aspyr says.

While you wait for Aspyr, you should still be able to play in spite of those graphics issues. They should not affect the actual game play.

BTW, you say you have OS X 10.6.1 (Leopard). That should be Snow Leopard, unless I've got my big cats mixed up.

<hangs head in shame>
You, sir, are correct. I am running Snow Leopard. My mac addicted self is feeling thoroughly chastised.

Hey... finally got into the 21st century here with an OS X computer. Managed to get a copy of Civ IV as well.

Still learning the basics of the new version OS 10.5.8 and CIV 1.61...

I'm very lost on the board topics just now... but what is this 1.74 update/patch you speak of and do I need it? Do I want it? (No plans to move to Snow Leopard yet)

I haven't managed a full game either (yet!)... there's so much more new stuff to try to figure out :)

Rio,
The update has gotten mixed reviews here, but I've had no problems with it (other than the problems already present with my game).
1.74 patch can be found here:
http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19218
or here:
http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=6&patch=1

Check to see if your game is running the patch already (I don't think it should be) by going into Advanced (in Main Menu) then About This Mod/Build. Should say 161 or 174 somewhere in there. If it says 174, you are set, if not, you can download the new patch and then run it.
Cheers

Hey, thanks for the reply and the link.

I'll go ahead and download it, although-- so far, no issues. I do have the system up-to-date for Leopard, everything minus SL. I'll just stash the .dmg meanwhile, in case something comes up.

I have BTS on hand as well here... but... one step at a time!
