After having made some israeli units, I remembered I'm French !
So let's give France a powerfull armored vehicle too !

In fact, the Leclerc is one of the most armored tank ever made.

I'm just on the modeling level on this. I have now to make all the animations. Don't expect this before 2 weeks, because my job is taking me a hell of time these days.

Give me some comments. I can still change things here.

We are awash in them no doubt. Still, they rank up there as my favorite ground unit, so I don't think we can ever have too many.

Very nice unit Boulboulgadol. Any chance of an AMX 30 in the future?

Looks good... before the civ sized image loaded I was going to suggest shrinking the size of the imaging pod on the top, but after seeing that if you made it smaller you wouldn't notice it...

Damn, thats harsh...

Nice artwork B!

When I saw the thread, for some reason I thought it was the 1940 era tank. For a good "Plan Yellow" scenario were going to need one. ;)

Wowie! :D
I think I like this tank better than all the other ones released, simply because it looks so cool as a model. Great work! :goodjob:

Thank you all for these comments.

cockroach : are you calling french people coards ??? Well I don't mind. Maybe we are, but we've got pretty girls ! Les petites francaises !

Polaris : For the AMX 30, I don't know yet. I will first attempt to finish this one. But I keep the idea !

Kinboat : as you know, we have to make details a bit bigger than reality to have decent graphics on the civ3 size. For example, I'm wondering if I will make the front spotlights bigger... I don't know...

CurtSibling : my dream too ! So that's why I'm making my contribution. And also because nobody here seemed to care about new french units ! :)

Yoda Power : there're 2 ways to see tanks a UU. Either thy are all flavor with the same stats, or real UU with different stats according to their own capabilities.
For example : I setted up the Merkava with "use every scare as a road", because it is very fast and designed to desert fields.
As the Leclerc is one of the most armoured, it could have a better defense stat, or a HP bonus.

Trip & Vodog : well... just thanks !

I go on !

You're quite right, Boulboulgadol, you DO have the pretty girls, and for that reason alone, we will let you keep your country!

:mwaha:

Great model, btw. Fine peice of work. I am actually rather envious of the Leclerc, named after a decent fellow, and with tough lines. If only Canada had the budget...

to Boulboulgadol,

Maybe its nice to put a gun ontop of the tank?

good luck

Well I thought about the Leopard 2 and its colors are lighter. The tank itself is also very different, so there is no chance of mistake.

But I will try some different camo

Looks very good. I dont mind about the colours cos the whole idea of camo is so not to be seen easily, not to set aside one tank from another. Keep up the good work, cant wait to see it done. At least ill have a decent tank the French can use as opposed to the modern armour.

This is the Fortify and Fidget animation.

The crew starts the infared and night vision systems to scan the area !

The animation is going to be played just one time. Here, with the infinite loop, it looks like a police car !

I'm starting to play with civ3 units like I was playing with Legos as a child ! :D

I don't know exactly when.
If I have a heavy week at work, it swon't be easy.
But don't worry. I want it done more than anyone of you !
I have a big new unit project in mind and I can't wait to to start playing with it too !

Nice try !

But still a secret ! :)

When the Leclerc is done, just check the unit previews some days later.

But now I have to make this tank, Run, Attack, Dead !

I like this tank! I'm trying to make a mod of the basic civ III rules with lots of extra units and modified governments.
One problem I'm having is how to include all the extra tanks!

with the moden ear units I would sugest the T55 being rather weak and slow, but requiring only oil- the Leopard II should be fairly weak but fast requiring oil and aluminium- this new heavy modern armour should be strong but slow requiring only oil and the American (firaxis original) moden armour should be slow but very strong requiring Oil, Aliminium and Uranium, for the depleted Urainium armour- which is almost unbeatable.
This means you don't have to make them all flavour units for the different civs.

Boulboulgadol
Oct 13, 2002, 06:46 AM
That's what I think !
Thanks for the suggestions !

I prefer to have different stats for each unit.
It will surelly make the game more interesting. There would be much more tactic details to consider when planning a battle. If you have a strong and slow tank, for example, you will prefer a railroaded area for an invasion or a D-day.

The question is (as always) : is the AI going to act this way too ?

I finished the Run and Attack animation.

I have to make the Death one.

Get ready, this is gonna be released soon !

I'll certainly need help to make the Pedia entries and the sounds, so...

FOR HIRE : a SOUNDMAN and a PediaEntiresMan to help me finish that. Just PM me for details.

Thanks

What Do I Do ???

While I was making the death animation, I suddenly realized that the frame size I'm using for all others animations is too small to exactly fit here.
As you can see, a part of the tube is cropped in some views.
I can't make a new frame size, because it would be almost impossible to get the exact same tank scale again.

So what do I do ?

Do I keep this animation or do I make a new one ? I can't figure if this problem will spoil the whole unit for the people who intended to use it. I know I didn't use some units here because I didn't like some details in it. That's why I'm wondering that.

The explosion is not made yet !
Just try to imagine it ! :D
It's gonna be in the front corner of the tank (the corner that is going up).

Kal-el
Oct 15, 2002, 03:47 PM
I believe you can increase the frame size for that animation without affecting your other animations.

Boulboulgadol
Oct 15, 2002, 04:06 PM
Technicly, that's possible, but the way I make animations, it would be just too long.

I'll try to find out a solution but I can't promess anything...

Richard III
Oct 15, 2002, 04:17 PM
That destruction animation is already the best I've seen - w/out the explosion! Congratulations!

Balou
Oct 15, 2002, 04:18 PM
I had the same problem at some point.
What I did was draw a line from the middle of the camera to the focus point. Then I rendered one frame of the old animation as reference and increased the framesize, after this was done I pushed the camera back along the line I had previously drawn (so the angle remains the same). If you use 3dmax, simple change the camera to a target camera, draw a line with splines, push the camera back and change it to a free camera again.
Then it is just trial and error until you get a good size again. (keep the reference open in your 3d program and always make a render when you move your camera until you have it right)
Keep trying until you are happy with the perspective and chances are that it is even better than before. (use the modern armor as reference instead if you think the old perspective was not 100% right)

Thanks Richard III !

Balou, I'm using Rhino, but I see what you mean. That's a good idea. I'm gonna try to do that and see the results.

I keep you informed guys !

I decided to remake it all over again in order to keep max quality.

Here it is.

Again, I need to add the explosion.
You'll see that on the release.
