Holycannoli Oct 19, 2009, 02:43 AM Yeah why the hell is it so cold? Summer was cold, fall is way too cold, we're getting snow nearby, it's been rainy and rarely above 50 this week. Wtf??
This winter is gonna SUCK!
And if you disagree with me, then you're probably a racist.
taillesskangaru Oct 19, 2009, 03:41 AM Why do people insist on using Fahrenheit?
Dachs Oct 19, 2009, 03:44 AM Why do people insist on using any scale of measurement as opposed to a different one? They're all equally arbitrary.
SS-18 ICBM Oct 19, 2009, 03:46 AM Yes, a scale of measurement based on the freezing point and boiling point of the most common solvent on Earth is totally arbitrary. Oh great, look what's been started.
Ziggy Stardust Oct 19, 2009, 03:47 AM @Dachs Nice avatar :D
Rant: still have a hangover from Saturday :(
Yared Oct 19, 2009, 04:03 AM You have a relationship with someone based on sms-s and you call her you GF?
Now that is rantworthy....
:lol::lol::lol:
I'm not gonna go in to it too much but... We live far from each other, we meet maybe once every second week, we txt at least 1000 txts a week (I'm not lying. My cell phone can only hold a certain amount of txts and I have to erase all of them quite often), we go to different schools and we like each other very much.
Yes, it is possible to take a relationship to a certain point with just txting, chatting and the occasional bumping-in-tos.
taillesskangaru Oct 19, 2009, 04:08 AM I can't even keep friendships with people I see on a daily basis.
Yared Oct 19, 2009, 04:34 AM I can't even keep friendships with people I see on a daily basis.
Well, I'm sure we could be friends ;)
PlutonianEmpire Oct 19, 2009, 05:24 AM the weekend's over. :(
VRWCAgent Oct 19, 2009, 05:49 AM I just went to start my breakfast, and I have no thawed out sausage or bacon
I'm gonna have to do egg in the basket or something now... I swear, this sucks. I'm having my coffee, I'm having my cigs, and all I want to complete this nice morning is some damned pork.
Dachs Oct 19, 2009, 06:06 AM I'm tired of China.

I frakkin burned them! [pissed] This day is not starting out well.
Ziggy Stardust Oct 19, 2009, 06:11 AM Did you burn them because you failed to pay attention because you had to tell us you were out of pork?
My mom always said: An egg burned is a lesson learned :)
azzaman333 Oct 19, 2009, 06:12 AM You also have a pretty crappy camera. :p
Peck of Arabia Oct 19, 2009, 06:13 AM Ooh, I've been away from the forum so long it's started whining when I log on the way that it does ("you haven't posted here in a few weeks; how come you never post here anymore? Don't you find me attractive like you used to?")
Still the real rant is that my PC died several days before I had to go back to uni (Blue Screen of Death and EVERYTHING), I couldn't find the installation CD, so the software on my PC now is from the one before that- it's taken aaaages to update everything (there's still very little music on- and, most tragically considering where I'm posting, I didn't have time to install any games back on it; it's basically a glorified typewriter... sigh)
VRWCAgent Oct 19, 2009, 06:13 AM Did you burn them because you failed to pay attention because you had to tell us you were out of pork?
My mom always said: An egg burned is a lesson learned :)
That's probably why they burned, yeah.
You also have a pretty crappy camera. :p
It's my phone's. I leave my camera at work typically.
choxorn Oct 19, 2009, 07:25 AM Rant: Can no one come up with a good thread title?
Ziggy Stardust Oct 19, 2009, 08:07 AM Cold as hell is pretty funny innit? :shifty:
Dachs Oct 19, 2009, 08:08 AM It's not as good as quoting Network, but that's been done before. :(
Adria Oct 19, 2009, 10:00 AM The good news is I have a new computer at work - they replaced it Friday when I was off. The bad news is I had to wait 30+ minutes for the techs to show up at work because they forgot to unlock my account to let me back in.
Now to reset all my passwords, reinstall a bunch of programs, and bug the techs some more to get access to some other programs. They were asked to install all the same programs they put on my officemate's computer, but of course they didn't. Here's hoping they remember where they eventually found the necessary software and licenses...
classical_hero Oct 19, 2009, 10:19 AM I hate this cold/flu season, since I have almost have sick for half of the time. While some were mild and not affected work, the last to illnesses have been very draining and this one that I have right now has been the worst illness I have had for many years. It is extremely frustrating to have been so sick so often.
Ulyaoth Oct 19, 2009, 10:44 AM It was way too warm today. Ridiculous. I want snow dammit!
Also I got a test tomorrow on crap I have no idea about and I don't have a textbook for this class.
Kozmos Oct 19, 2009, 01:03 PM I messed up half of my physics test because I forgot to switch two variables when doing calculations...
Love Oct 19, 2009, 01:17 PM Why do people complain on my creative title?
Also I have a cold.
Cheezy the Wiz Oct 19, 2009, 03:03 PM I'm so tired of Stainless Steel's insistence on denying me Fortresses and Citadels. It always seems like I'm fighting most of the game with Spear and Archer Militia, yet somehow the enemy can afford to have full armies of Mailed Knights or Tabar infantry or Ghulams???
In other news, the Kwarazaemians can suck my junk. This is complete BS. There's no way I can be expected to make headway against someone whose four unit, 500 man armies are rated higher than a full stack the best of my (Byzantine) units. None of my cities are growing vaguely fast, much less the castles, and when they do I don't have the money to spend to actually expand them because it all goes towards building new armies for the Fatamid/Kwarazaemian meat grinder. [pissed]

(cause if it is, you have some really bad strategies :D )
Shylock Oct 19, 2009, 03:16 PM I only got a C or B on my Ecology exam. I hope he has a sense of humour and doesn't care about the doodle I put on the multiple choice section (the answers go on a scantron anyway).
choxorn Oct 19, 2009, 03:36 PM I freakin hate all the various projects/essays in English class that have completely crap prompts and can only be completed by writing 5 paragraphs of total BS. F you, English. F YOU. [pissed]
Ulyaoth Oct 19, 2009, 03:39 PM That's plenty of classes. But yes, English is worst about that, glad I'm pretty much done with it assuming I don't go to some other university that makes me retake it.

Bill3000 Oct 19, 2009, 04:57 PM Why do people insist on using any scale of measurement as opposed to a different one? They're all equally arbitrary.
No, they're not. Planck units are most certainly not arbitrary.
Also 32 and 212 are far more arbitrary than 0 and 100.
And failing that, outside of the specific unit of scale, Kelvin certainly isn't arbitrary.
Eat_Up_Martha Oct 19, 2009, 05:07 PM My prof spent the entire class today trying (and failing) to explain how the area of the bar on a bar graph can also be used to represent its value. It's an extremely simple concept that he completely messed up. At the end, he just shrugged and we all left.
I'm wasting a lot of time and money on this class. The only reason I go anymore is because I have no idea what is going to be on the midterm.
Also, Celsius > Fahrenheit.
Ecofarm Oct 19, 2009, 05:22 PM It's freezing cold in Florida. It kinda makes me hate everyone.

mangxema Oct 19, 2009, 06:22 PM It's freezing cold in Florida. It kinda makes me hate everyone.
Aye. When I moved into my [third floor] apartment three weeks ago there was a heat index around 100. Now it's definitely chilly. I could have used this respite then!
Bill3000 Oct 19, 2009, 06:23 PM What is cold in Florida? The temperature of an oven instead of the surface of the sun?

To be fair to the side that we do use and often abuse arbitrary units though, people have created some utterly stupid misconceptions. One of the worst imo- the "fake nerd" T-shirt:
"Resistance is futile if < 1 ohm"
Sashie VII Oct 19, 2009, 07:34 PM I forgot my sweater. It's cold as hell in the office.

Cheezy the Wiz Oct 19, 2009, 07:45 PM "Fight smarter, not harder." :mischief:
I know, which is why I'm preparing a massive flanking maneuver via naval landing in the Nile Delta. But the ultimate problem is the Kwarazameian bottomless army pit. I'm just trying to hold them off and hold onto my provinces and even that is proving exhausting. I got lucky and repulsed a deep incursion into Armenia and Syria, but I've made nothing from it since their armies are so well equipped that every victory for me is Pyrrhic. Its put Ghulams on my short list.
Seriously dude, what the hell is with you and retardedly low pop growth? I guess part of it is probably you expanding way the hell faster than I usually try, but still...
Its 1189 and this is my empire:
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3858/byzantineempire1.th.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/i/byzantineempire1.jpg/)
Draw your own conclusions. Constantinople is a fine size at 29000 people, but all my castles are pathetically small; as far as I can tell there are not even any Fortresses yet anywhere on the campaign map! My armies consist of Byzantine Spearmen, some Dismounted Lancers, Peasant Archers, and Skythikon, plus whatever mercs I can scrape up. I just got Byzantine Infantry in Constantinople a few turns ago, but I haven't been able to use them in combat yet.

Cheezy the Wiz Oct 20, 2009, 05:55 PM I just fended off a huge siege of Tabriz from the Kwarazemians, one I should have thoroughly lost, when my game crashed. There's no way I could hope to recreate that, it was pure effing luck. [pissed]
Adria Oct 20, 2009, 06:54 PM I hate when machines break at work. Especially when I'm about to start my weekly QA tests after-hours when there are no electronics techs around. It's even better when I can't just switch to my other machine because it's scheduled for maintenance the next day (and the same tests have to be done post-maintenance).
I get to go home a bit early today, but I have to stay even later tomorrow.

Nope, the Kwarazemian army was rated much higher than mine. Its essentially a full army of Spear Militia and Peasant Archers, plus a general and two catapults.

Cheezy the Wiz Oct 20, 2009, 09:19 PM Oh, the catapults. Okay. Sorry mang.
No, that's MY army. The Kwarazamian army was Dismounted Ghulams and Arab Cavalry and other nastiness that requires my fine hand at dealing with. Even then I thought it was hopeless until their general died and a strange rout ensued (if they'd kept on fighting I would have lost for sure, the "power" bar on the left was probably 1/10 me and 9/10 them).
Dachs Oct 20, 2009, 09:22 PM Why the hell do you have catapults guarding a city? God, everything about your games just confuses the hell out of me. More so the weird population problems.
taillesskangaru Oct 20, 2009, 09:38 PM My years of schooling ends today.

Cheezy the Wiz Oct 20, 2009, 09:48 PM Why the hell do you have catapults guarding a city? God, everything about your games just confuses the hell out of me. More so the weird population problems.
Well they were left over from a remnant army who was, at one point, trying to march south to the nearest Elburz city. I kept them there in the hopes that I might one day resume the offensive, and just load the catapults in a new army when it got to Tabriz rather than haul the bastards all the hell the way from Tiflis or Baku.
Also, I've experienced the devastating effects of catapults firing at point-blank range from a city square into an enemy mostly piled up on a street trying to force its way into said square. Similar to putting a PAK 40 in a bombed out building and shoving 75mms into a T-34 from about twenty yards away.
Eran of Arcadia Oct 21, 2009, 06:49 AM Some people don't understand, professionalism is a two way street.

True, but there's still a big dent in the back of the car, and it still might hurt, and it still isn't worth it.

Ansar Oct 21, 2009, 05:34 PM I will never be 'truly' fluent in another language.
Mirc Oct 21, 2009, 05:42 PM The key, and sometimes the only way to do it, is to live in a place where it is widely spoken... You can already speak Spanish and English, right? No doubt you can learn another one. You're probably thinking of French...? If that's actually the case, then you shouldn't complain and instead get to work! :D It's extremely easy - being Romance, it's so thoroughly connected to the other 2 languages that you speak, that you really should have absolutely no problem in becoming fluent. I know, learning a foreign language can get frustrating at times. It can get really frustrating, to the point of giving up. But if what I assumed is actually the case, then you've set out to learn one of the easiest languages in the whole world, for you! So just keep trying.
Hey, if my friend from Japan is 100% fluent in Romanian after 5 years of living there, and if most of the people I know here in Germany are fluent in German (including approximately 1.6564564576 million Turks (:p), which have a very hard time with an entirely unrelated language), then you can do it too, with a language that has a lexical similarity of over 80% to your native one!!
(and just so you know, the last number is actually not pulled out of my behind :p)
Just don't give up, it's admittedly painful, but the only way there is.

The thing is, even though I may be able to speak, read, and write it ... it'll never be like Spanish or English where it comes totally natural to me. I mean, it's not like I'm translating in my head when I see/hear/read French, but I make a connection (sort of like latching on to see the cognates) to Spanish. My mother can speak English very well, but it's not like when she speaks Spanish. I'm sure you're not as comfortable when speaking in German or Italian as you are in Romanian.

Adria Oct 21, 2009, 07:02 PM I'm still waiting for the electronics guys to finish the preventative maintenance on my machine so I can do the post-maintenance tests. They're usually done by 4, and right now it's looking like they won't be finished until at least 6:30, which is when I'd normally be leaving work on a 'late' day. So I'm looking at getting out of here around 8pm at the earliest tonight.
Mirc Oct 21, 2009, 07:22 PM The thing is, even though I may be able to speak, read, and write it ... it'll never be like Spanish or English where it comes totally natural to me.
Well, it will happen over time, there's truly no doubt about that; again, especially if you take the time to live in a place where French is spoken by a majority of the population. I mean, if you can already think, understand and speak this language without translating it in your head, then you're obviously quite advanced with it. The rest comes just through practice... and I don't mean doing grammar exercises. I mean experience with the language, giving it the time to become ingrained in your mind. The problem with actually becoming fluent in a foreign language is not just learning the new words and how sentences and phrases should be built and tied together - the problem is that each language has its own different sets of categories; any language used by man is, so to say, a multitude of concepts, which, in different tongues, overlap each other, but are not perfectly equal - therefore being only partially the same concepts as the ones you were used to. The ability to mold your thinking after the shape of those categories is what will make you fully fluent in a language. What makes you slow and "foreign-sounding" while speaking a foreign language is exactly the existence of a discrepancy between the sets of categories you use in your first language (or in any other one that you speak fully fluently, for that matter), and the target language, the one you are trying to learn.
Also, yeah, I'm really much, much more uncomfortable when speaking German or Italian in comparison to Romanian or English... I mean for starters, I've never learned one bit of Italian grammar, therefore I'm quite certain that any full sentence I attempt to say will contain at least one mistake, and as for German... Heh, I'm still struggling to express myself in conversations most of the time, and when it comes to understanding... the person I'm hearing must be slow, speak clearly and most importantly not use any dialect words in order for me to be able to fully understand what they are saying (meaning: to get the feeling that I understood every word), and those conditions pretty much rule out the entire population of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. :p I'm still way, way further down with my knowledge of German than you are with your French, despite the fact that I'm living in Germany and have been working like a madman to learn it. But the situations cannot be compared. I mean this language shares with the other languages that I know so much less of the vocabulary... and don't even get me started on the sentence structure! Let's just say that the horrible mishmash of verbs at the end of any slightly complex phrase makes me need to rethink any long phrase in order to understand it... And this is in spoken conversations almost always impossible, due to total lack of time.
But I'm drifting away from the subject. The point is, these things come. Trust me, you have it easy, and time will prove it. Just give yourself some time to live in a French-speaking place and you'll be a fully-fledged fluent speaker in no time. :D

Dachs Oct 24, 2009, 02:08 AM After no small amount of hand-wringing, I discovered several things.
1. MARC does not operate on weekends. So I'd have to ride an actual Amtrak train, coach, to get there.
2. Said coach tickets would have had me out fifty bucks. At least. Probably more, I didn't double-check the schedule from the bus to the metro (the step before the train).
3. Cabs still cost more than weekend Metro + weekend train.
4. I don't actually have to be there at the time recommended.

(Well, according to some cannibals man taste like pork and women taste more like roast beef, at least of cooked properly. It seems humans are also unable to smell human flesh, so it is probably more a matter of texture.)
Pork fits with politicians better though, so I'm sticking with politicians taste like pork/like the taste of pork(barrel spending).
Dachs Oct 26, 2009, 03:00 AM Having extensively read on the subject, I recently conceived of the idea of writing a CFC history article on the causes of the First World War, only to find I had been beaten to the punch by a self-attested verbose poster (http://forums.civfanatics.com/member.php?u=1031) by some five years and change. His take on the matter is verbose, and it covers many bases, but it has some deficits.
The first point, I do not believe that many posters on CFC (OT or WH) have actually read it, considering some of the relevant information that is frequently ignored by many here who hold a substantive opinion on the matter. This is a shame, because, despite being nearly as random a narrative - though much better organized - as one I might craft, the author did a damned good job of tying together relevant threads and eliminating certain myths that seem to persist among the denizens of CFC.
The second point is that the discussion is kinda...dumbed down. It reads like it was written for a middle-schooler with no knowledge of European history from a standing start. This might be attributed to the fact that it was written in days when CFC was young and possibly more populated by people who didn't give a damn. (It might not have even changed significantly from that.) But in so doing, it omits quite a few relevant facts, and in wiping out a few myths fosters new ones. So, while an improvement on the current situation as I perceive it - which admittedly may be a poor generalization - it isn't enough, by my lights.
So there's already a long, fairly involved, and good quality history article on the subject. Sufficient rationale for not writing a long, fairly involved, and I would hope good quality history article on the same one. Plus, let's face it, I'm just thinking about this because I want a kind of release from other stuff I'm writing. Doing that would probably get a few (I hope) members of the community here a bit pissed at me.
But still there's the whole sense of maaaaaaaan associated with the whole thing. You know what I mean? It's kinda dejecting. And what makes it worse is that this is one of those minor projects that, unlike my other brief crusades like the grand effort to learn more about the history of the modern Middle East, or the glorious scheme to be better at basketball than just a decent pickup player, or the One That I Had But Got Away Anyway, it'll probably stick with me because I'm specializing in that period. (Well, that last one sticks too. Bad.)
So, yeah. Not really a big deal, but at five in the morning I had thoughts on it. In a postcountless thread. Shoot me.

Adria Oct 26, 2009, 02:46 PM So I have my computer back, but now I get to redo everything I did last week when I first got the new computer - downloading & installing programs I need, adjusting all my settings, etc. And I get to do more this time around (relocating all my backed-up files) because this time the back-up of my old computer wasn't copied onto the new(est) one. *sigh*

choxorn Oct 26, 2009, 03:59 PM So we've been struggling for 3 months to make good on the marketing promise of a 1 November deadline. It seemed a real long-shot to make it, but we looked about to pull it off. Last Friday we had some beers to celebrate the fact we only needed about 60 man-hours, spread over 3 guys, to get the job done. Cheers all around. This morning though we get called into a meeting. Since marketing got a whiff of our progress they decided to drop an extended requirements bomb in our planning.
If I stop posting here for a while and you find an article in Reuter's Odly Enough about a Dutch Project Manager being killed by anal insertion of a fruit machine; Game Designer arrested, you can guess what happened.
What did they ask you to do, then?
As for that, well, I'm sure you can come up with something better than a fruit machine. Something that's sharp. :p

Earthling Oct 26, 2009, 10:25 PM So here's a little rant/suggestion about the forums, I'd actually thought of it a while ago - who else finds it really annoying that once a thread hits page 10 (and hey, look where we are ;)), you can only directly link to the first 10 pages, and the "Last Page." I'd much rather have a "First page" and then the last 10 pages, as it would do for you inside the thread, since that's where recent discussion is. At the least, having an option to toggle or customize might be nice - this is the type of thing that heavily plagues certain threads (who wants to see page 5 of some sports thread, when it's months old...) if there already is an option I'm missing I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Ziggy Stardust Oct 27, 2009, 08:01 AM What did they ask you to do, then? We're making a multigamer, 8 games. Marketing wanted 10, but were told they'd have to wait for a next release. Marketing said "but we promised the customer". We said, "than you're a bloody fool that's what you are", since we told them they could have any number of games as long as it was lower than 9 and higher than 7 from the start. Now they expect us to port 2 more games in there from the German multigamer, complete with testing and peer review. In one week.
So I got together with the programmers, asked them to 'inject' a 'feature' which would crash each game after an hour. This morning our testers 'found' this unfortunate bug, so it looks like we have to spend the rest of the week bugfixing :mischief:
So sorry those extra two games have to wait for next release :(
As for that, well, I'm sure you can come up with something better than a fruit machine. Something that's sharp. :pFruit machines are quite big though. Should be rather painful.

Cheezy the Wiz Oct 27, 2009, 09:45 PM What he hell is wrong with our culture that people worship Miley Cyrus and the like and have no clue who the great scientific minds are? How many "average" people today know who Carl Sagan was, or Richard Feynman, or Niel DeGrasse Tyson? Who knows what our scientists are discovering today, even if it does make national headlines for a moment? How many people can talk for hours about the Steelers' defensive line, but don't understand how a simple prism works? Or can recite the lyrics of ever 50 Cent song but couldn't tell you the three laws of thermodynamics? And even among the "educated," how many know anything about epistemology?
Sashie VII Oct 27, 2009, 09:48 PM I detest cheesy IM statuses.
Earthling Oct 27, 2009, 09:49 PM You know, I didn't recognize Tyson's name as first but a quick search revealed that I've obviously heard of him - he's famous for efforts to "popularize science" though, not a bad guy at all, but it was kinda odd for you to mention him as a "great mind" and what that implies.
Ulyaoth Oct 27, 2009, 09:53 PM It's always been like that. Like any other culture cares more about science than sports and celebrities.

If Tyson is known by laymen its most likely because of his recent (last few years) involvement in the Pluto question. I shouldn't have called him a "great mind," but he's obviously a very smart person.
It's always been like that. Like any other culture cares more about science than sports and celebrities.
It hasn't always been like that. Scientists used to be virtual superstars.
Ulyaoth Oct 27, 2009, 10:04 PM When has it ever been like that? Only time I could think would maybe be a brief time around Einstein and that time when major changes in how people thought the world was were being made frequently. And even then it'd have been mostly just educated middle-class people interested in his stuff, but the common man was mostly still just focused on who was in the world series.
Cheezy the Wiz Oct 27, 2009, 10:19 PM Yes it about ended around that time.
But that doesn't change the fact that "its always been that way" is a thoroughly stupid reason for doing anything, or that that's the only way it can be.

Masada Oct 27, 2009, 11:56 PM Well, according to Cheezy's test I must be a borderline idiot. I couldn't tell you anything about Miley Cyrus, Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Niel DeGrasse Tyson, the Steelers', 50 cent or epistemology; although, I do know a little about prisms and thermodynamics. All those unknowns represent, to me, esoteric knowledge. I don't have any immediate use for it, yet I'm sure Cheezy doesn't consider me a stupid person for not knowing it. I likewise don't consider him a stupid person for not knowing about my own obscure little corner of history and economics -- or rugby, or Indonesian history, or the economics of the Northern Territory. The sum total of knoweldge in the world has exponentially expanded in the last few hundred years, it was easy for the educated at the turn of the millennium to know all past and living 'great minds' there weren't all that many of them.
Perhaps subtlety of meaning is lost?
kulade Oct 27, 2009, 11:59 PM My rant was irrelevant to what you children were speaking about before I entered the thread.

Everyone has a place in society. These "'average' people" that you speak of probably have no use of this excess information. Why should they care about the conservation of energy?
I can understand epistemology (the usage of critical thinking is something I'd love to see more of) and I'd love for people to have a greater knowledge of politics and stuff that actually concern them but I see no reason to complain just because people don't worship Mr Sagan.
The rest of us will just have to stick to our science fiction.
RIP Sagan

Gilder Oct 29, 2009, 10:03 PM Yes, know it all 'friend', I've been totally mispronouncing my hometown's name for years. Obviously I haven't the slightest freakin' clue on how to pronounce it, but surely since you live in the same county but not in the town, you obviously have the right pronunciation. It's not like you haven't been there in years or anything, or talked to many people native to that town. But please, do go on in lecturing me on how I and everyone else in my hometown goes about mispronouncing its own name. Jesus. Freaking. Christ.
If this were the only time she'd been this irreparably thick, it wouldn't bother me nearly as much.
Karalysia Oct 29, 2009, 11:09 PM So I was in class not paying attention because early morning classes make me sleepy when suddenly everyone raises their hand and starts staring at me, at which point I realized the TA asked a question about whether we should tolerate some cultures which advocate the forcible suicide of women who get raped. And by that time it was too late to raise my hand so I just didn't bother. Everyone looked at me real weird and now they think I support it. He was even like "So I see the vast majority around 95% don't support that" It's a good thing I have a high tolerance for public embarrassment but its the first time I've ever wanted to sink into the floor. I bet they even think I'm a Republican.

Genocidicbunny Oct 30, 2009, 12:30 AM "Ehh, Ill stop procrastinating later"
Its probably because you know you can get away with it.
MagisterCultuum Oct 30, 2009, 12:57 AM I'm not doing very well this semester. I got sick at the wrong time, and fell pretty far behind. I dropped the class I was doing worst in, but am not doing all that well in the others either. My Psych 1101 grade is probably fine (I got a 96 on the first test even though I was still sick, hadn't been to the class in about 2 weeks, and did not know about the test in order to study. When I did study for the second test I got a 91.), but I've thrown away about 6% (or maybe it was 8%, but 2% can be made up through an extra credit report or being a subject in a couple psych experiments) of the grade from being absent on days with in class assignments and forgetting to email him in advance. I haven't gotten a single Materials Lab report done in time (one of them I didn't get one at all) and that trend does not look like it is going to change this week. On Monday I pulled an all-nighter to try to finish the lab report since I thought it was due Tuesday (I missed the email extending the deadline to 5pm Friday), but did not get that much accomplished. It did mean that I ended up sleeping away most of Tuesday, and missing the review for Thursday's Environmental Engineering test and really throwing off my sleep schedule. I didn't get to study much, and am pretty sure I failed the test. That is after getting a D on the first test in that class, and the professor says almost never curves. I've also made very little progress on the lab report since then. This will probably be another all-nighter. There are so many outliers on my graphs I'm not sure what to omit. The website we were supposed to check for more info on the materials we tested does not seem useful at all, as the domain is up for sale and it only has a lot of useless links instead of real data.
I was planning to meet with my advisers tomorrow to discuss my schedule (since early registration for fall opens up Saturday for me) and when I'll end up graduating (as far as shear number of hours goes I could have graduated in the Spring, but I missed the deadline and am not sure when specific classes I might need are being offered), but I doubt I'll be able to as I need to focus on the report and then sleep.
My cousin is getting married on Halloween, but our part of the family was not invited. (I don't think it was actually anything against us in particular, as apparently only a handful of family members from our rather large family was invited. I guess they wanted a really small wedding at a certain place in Savannah that didn't have room for too many people.)
azzaman333 Oct 30, 2009, 02:45 AM My leg feels like ow.

choxorn Oct 30, 2009, 03:30 AM Well, I finished my homework finally. However, upon going to turnitin.com to turn it in, I discovered that what I just did is due next Wednesday, and something else, much shorter and less time-consuming, is due today at around 10 PM.
FML.
taillesskangaru Oct 30, 2009, 03:32 AM I have a chemistry exam in two weeks. If the last one is anything to go by, the people who writes my chemistry exams are a cruel merciless bunch.

Peck of Arabia Oct 30, 2009, 06:13 AM Why do academic books have to have such short publishing runs, and thus be so expensive; my course tutors really recommend buying "Approaches to Social Enquiry: Advancing Knowledge" by Norman Blaikie (it's as exciting as it sounds) and I can only find it on play.com for £55
OK it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but for a student, and for a book that doesn't explain that much in the course (especially towards the end of the year) it does seem a bit much...

Catharsis Oct 30, 2009, 04:37 PM Dark CFC is a great theme to use for All Hallows' and all that, but I don't see how anyone can use it the whole year round. Everything's too grey. It's hard to tell where one text box ends and another begins.
Also, this thread has no tags! What's with that? A crucial oversight on your part, Love. If you weren't in France I'd send you to France as punishment.
MagisterCultuum Oct 30, 2009, 05:15 PM As I feared, I did not finish the lab report on time. I fell asleep at almost 10am, and woke up about the time the lab was due. Maybe another all-nighter will be enough.
Karma for closing my thread without a good reason.
