http://www.civfanatics.net/methos/hof/staff/gauntlet.gifWhile the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/rules.php)BEFORE playing!

Settings:

Victory Condition: Space Colony (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
Difficulty: Monarch
Starting Era: Ancient
Map Size: Standard
Map Type: Ice Age
Speed: Epic
Required: Raging Barbarians
Required: Aggressive AI
Civ: Khmer (Suryavarman)
Opponents: Must include Aztec (Montezuma), China (Qin Shi Huang), France (Napoleon), Greece (Alexander), Mongolia (Genghis Khan), Native America (Sitting Bull), Spain (Isabella), Zulu (Shaka)

This will be a tense game unless one uses war to get a commanding early lead...which is advisable.

Sounds fun. Hard to play a peaceful game here!

Sounds fun. Hard to play a peaceful game here!

I did the OCC thing just to try the peaceful solution and it worked fine, basically had one turn where Shaka hit my capital, lost his stack, then took peace. After that had a defensive pact then permanent alliance so a few cold wars but no combat.

So with a little better RNG luck you could probably do it completely peacefully.

Of course it took me until 1980 to get the victory, so it's not a winning strategy, but it's fun to defy expectations. ;)

:crazyeye: No Vassals is also probably a good option to consider for this map.

Maybe maybe not. We might not want to colonize, and AI-AI caps could simplify the diplo picture. At very least it's not an obvious choice.

You weren't serious about random personalities... were you? :)

I suppose you're right. My main concern is Shaka dominating all the other AI's and then swarming me in the endgame.

Having already made one attempt at this, I will say that a setting that is likely to be more beneficial is "no random events". I really enjoy the random events most of the time, but in this gauntlet, just one "Diplomatic Faux Paus" event can ruin a lot of plans. Once an Aggro Ghengis is annoyed with you, it's really hard to get that diplo point back.

On the other hand, getting a couple of +3 bonus events is really helpful ... got to take the good with the bad. :)

The first BtS gauntlet I played was a space race and I got the bonus SS production event, so definately can take the good with the bad!!

In my game, I took out Izzy and vassalized Genghis and Qin. Turned into me + those two versus Shaka + Alex + Monty versus Napoleon + Sitting Bull. Sometime in the 1800s I bribed Shaka to go after Napoleon and the two of them kept fighting until I had won the game.

Humorously, Shaka and Napoleon never asked me to join the fight that I can recall, but their respective vassals kept begging me to join over and over again every few turns. So I took a bunch of relations hits, but who really cares what the vassals think.

I'm not sure if vassals were really key to my victory because Shaka and Napoleon probably would have just taken a few extra turns to wipe out the other civs if they couldn't vassalize them. But reducing the effective number of competitors sure worked out well for me.

Man oh man. These crazies love to DoW on each other. I am running out of time and hope to finish my game tonight. In my game I took Mansa and Zara as my potential friendly AI's and Zara Dow'ed me from out of the blue. Except he had axes and I had chariots. Anyways, so far Izzy, Zara, Alex and Monty got wiped out by me in that order. Alex and Mansa was at it for a long time when it was time for me to expand and I did not want alex that close to me.

Built the Wall early and went for CS sling. After that it was expanding slowly and delibrately. Wish there were stone near by but the start was the best I have ever seen. 3 gold, 1 gem, corn w/o water and pigs on a hill. Izzy's cap had 3 gems and rice and cows. So that was my first target when Zara dowed. Got Industry with Lib. After that started messing up.

I just realized that only hammer multipliers help hammer economy. At first I was building every building in these cities. Finally got the picture.

Well done to those who finished this one. I was hoping to be able to play but never made it.
