Back in February - Feb 16, 2002 to be exact. I began a project. I set out to create a Baron Triplane Unit based on the Red Baron's plane.

As many of you know, I soon ran into problems with the pallette and other things, so I abandoned the project for other units.
Every now and then I came back to it.

So many people urged me to continue it and if it weren't for them it would never have been completed.

I want to dedicate this unit to those who inspired me to finish it - in particular nonnob, omnimower, and pablostuka. Thanks guys for the encouragement and suggestions.

I based the model off of a model from 3D Cafe, but I made some changes to it.

Here is the unit you've all been waiting for...
The much anticipated...
Triplane

Please rate this unit. Thanks.

Finally, after all your "Ahems," you can be at peace...

Thanks, guys, for being so patient. I know many of you REALLY REALLY wanted this unit.

I know I said I wanted civ-colours, but I don't suppose you could do an always-red one?

I could probably whip one up.
All I need to do is change the pallette, and throw in some insignia.
Might be another 8 months before I do though ;)

Thanks, stainz

Don't worry, I don't mind at all about the pedia icons.

I am posting this image to show both of them.
You can take your pick as to which one you want to use for your own personal triplane.

^A city needs $LINK<oil=GOOD_Oil> in its $LINK<Strategic Resource=GCON_ResourcesS> box to build a Dr-I.

#DESC_PRTO_Fokker_Dr-I_Triplane
^
^ Few aircraft of the WWI period have received the attention given the [Fokker Dr-I Triplane]. Often linked with the career of the highest scoring ace of that war, Germany's [Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen], "The Red Baron," the nimble Dr-I earned a reputation as one of the best ["dogfighters"] of the war.
^ The Fokker Dr-I was ordered into production on July 14 - 1917, in response to the success earlier in that year of the British [$LINK<Sopwith=PRTO_Sopwith_Camel> Biplane]. The first Dr-Is appeared over the Western Front in August, 1917. Pilots were impressed with its maneuverability, and several, including von Richthofen, soon scored victories with the highly maneuverable triplane. Nineteen of Richthofen's last 21 victories were achieved while he was flying the Dr-I.
^ Fokker built 320 Dr-Is; for a brief period production was suspended while the wings were redesigned to prevent in-flight failures and by May of 1918, the Dr-I was being replaced by the newer and faster $LINK<Fokker D-VII=PRTO_Fokker_D-VII>.

The Fokker Dr1 was the most flyable plane in WW1!

Actually Curt it wasn't, it was a death trap to new pilots or pilots used to other planes, actually this was a common probable with almost all german planes near the end of the war, both the DR-1 and the DVII, bother some of the best planes of the war where VERY difficult to use and fly

Flyable...crashable...all the same, my boy!

I am talking about when I used to play 'Red Baron' back in the good old 286mhz days!!!

Yeah, the Dr1 was a handful, but the seasoned ace could make it perform...

The allies had another quirky crate...
The famed Sopwith Camel had a near-lethal engine torque pull to the left when it took off,
leading to many fatal crashes as the plane flipped in mid air over the aerodrome.
And in the air, the Camel was always trying to turn to the left.
A very tiring plane to fly, as the pilot had to correct by applying right rudder constantly, during flight.

But NO other plane could out-turn the Camel when it turned left in combat!

A flaw that became an advantage, to the seasoned pilot!
