I can verify that this happens exclusively when running BUFFY with Vista home premium 64 bit. Normal non-mod civ causes no problems.

I've already tried running it as an admin ---> no help. Searches in the forum don't APPEAR to have resolved this issue?

Try setting the exe to run in XP compatability mode. (Right-click to get properties. Go to Compatability tab.)

I tried this but after one good game I got an identical CTD:

I've tried the AI autoplay mod and that does not CTD...so this might be something exclusive to buffy + vista? Is there anything with vista security that might interfere with the HoF aspect of the mod?

Have you done the Vista Fixes (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=vista)?

I had done #2 and #3 already. I just did #1 and will give it a go...

I also have Vista and have just installed the HoF Buffy upgrade. As soon as I select Buffy from the mod list the game stops working and returns to the desktop - I've been using the old version without any problems. I have implemented all the Vista fixes although my compatability settings keep reverting back to Read Only as soon as I exit the tab.
Any ideas from anyone?

Any ideas from anyone? The revert to read-only is normal. Have you patched to 3.19?

Oops! Patched to 3.19 but now get error message "HoF Mod Error" This warns that the HoF mod won't be able to save my settings and that games won't be valid for submission. I'm recommended to run the Vista fixes (which I've done loads of times) but I seem to be stuck in some sort of admin/tech loop.

admin/tech loop?

"admin/tech loop" is just my clumsy shorthand for a situation when whatever you do you are always faced with an administrator problem or a technical problem (usually some kind of error message). This is really frustrating as I've was a regular HoF contributor until Buffy came along and now it can't run the mod at all.

Still not sure what the admin/loop problem is but the error message you're getting should disappear if you run the Vista Fix 1a (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=vista).

For me, it was just the stack attack bug :/. Thanks all!

Hi,

I'm running win7, having the admin/loop problem - running buffy, latest 3.19 civ4 patches, complains about alledged read-write access and crashes. I've tried steps 1 and 2, including 1a, and have verified several ways that 1a's setting things read-write is set. 1a didn't help, though 2 for admin priv escalation shifts the error to silent, though still crashes.

I have a wild speculation (grain of salt), which I am not clear how to verify, that perhaps HoF is interacting negatively with the fact that Vista definitely began, and to an even greater win7 completed, the deprecation of C:\Documents and Settings. Based on remarks on the HoF page on Vista workarounds, Hof / Buffy is trying to read registry keys and look for C:\Documents and Settings...?? Afaik, that is no longer, directly, a valid directory in Win7, (not even admin can cd there, pops up a non-navigatable message, though they leave a token entry in explorer if you check showing hidden system folders/files) That has gone away in favor of a different default / user hierarchy C:\Users\{accountname}\...etc... (In my particular instance, using a typical default account name 'Owner', C:\Users\Owner\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\...etc... (clarity edit: which I've doublechecked is set open / writeable.)

Interestingly, I would get the error message when running regular mode post-installs, and properties-upgrading the exe settings to elevate beyond the sword's .exe to always run in administrator mode...suppressed the error message and simply resulted in silent crash. (alas!)

I'm a bit uncertain what to do at this point, having been through all 3 fix suggestions and a civ4 reinstall, it just seems stuck. Advice is welcome. I'm a programmer by dayjob, the suggestions can be technical mechanics / cmdline / regedit, should anyone have tips.

I'm tempted to look into HoF/Buffy's source directly, but at the moment haven't devolved to grinding towards that under-the-hood avenue. Haven't tried some of the compatibility settings for running in old windows OS modes yet. (edit: XP SP3 compat checkbox tried, no luck yet)

Regards,

Tried all the Vista fixes and a re-install but still get message saying HoF mod is not valid - I can play the game but can't submit valid entries as I have done many times before. The admin loops is just that - you get an error, make the suggested changes and then get the same error message again - that's a loop to me!

I'm a programmer by dayjob, the suggestions can be technical mechanics / cmdline / regedit, should anyone have tips.It sounds like we are going to ride the same kind of rollercoaster we did when vista came out. Most of the Vista fixes came about by different people figuring out what was happenning. None of us on the HOF staff have Win7 yet. I will have to see about getting it.

Your comment about the My Document path are interesting but I don't understand how Win7 is different from Vista. Vista uses the C:\Users\{accountname}\Documents paradigm. Vista fix 3 came about because the registry entry pointing there wasn't created for the first account. Did they rename the registry keys? What about the Civ4 keys? Vista (64-bit, at least) inserted a new node ("Wow6432Node") under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software which created problems for the MapFinder and AssetsFinder programs but I don't think it ever bothered the DLL.

IIRC, Fallout3 had a bug where installing under "C:\Program Files (x86)" messed with something. You might try installing in a different directory path.

Until I get a better insight into what might be different in Win7, I don't know what else to tell you. I guess browsing the Civ4 - Tech Support (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=159) forum might yield some info if others have had problems with Win7.

Are your Windows updates up-to-date? Including .NET optional installs?

That's cool. I may chip away at it as an interesting puzzle on the side, if I find some juicy regedit or reinstall technique tidbits, will convey. If it were dayjob, I'd be running dtrace and truss already - win7 debug toolchain is less familar / have to get up to speed on. I posted as much for infoloop as a user in the field reporting back, as anything else, to convey as a known issue.

I'm thrilled in the first place the mod exists. It is an awesome mod, I have had much enjoyment of it previously under winXP.

edit: misc: Casually poking about regedit. Can confirm win7 has HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Wow6432Node->Firaxis Games->Sid Meier's Civilization 4 - Beyond the Sword, with: (default) REG_SZ unset, and DEFAULT_LANGUAGE REG_DWORD 0x00000009, which is presumably unchanged from Vista's layout (no vista box to compare, but seems to agree with your comment.)

For a proper regedit examination, I ought to go snag the buffy/hof code to crosscheck what it's using / looking for. Merely offhand chitchat. Just started poking around registry, still lazing about this holiday morning to read up on how to toolchain up a runtime debugger yet.

Tangent, but want to report that the BUG 4.1 mod works with respect to a win7 box encountering this admin/tech loop issue.
Edit: Found the page on old Hof versions / standalone versions. Hof 3.17.001 also successfully mod-loads as a standalone mod.

Mention as may possibly be helpful narrowing down interesting code, as my (still basic) understanding is buffy is a wrapper rolling up bug and hof.

By the way, speaking with my fortune 25 team lead programmer's hat on for the moment, the .py source I've seen so far is very well done, friendly and crisp across the spectrum: vars, comments, structure. A tip of the hat, a credit to the coding profession and community.

That is kind of interesting. BUFFY-3.19.001 is a compilation of BUG 4.0, BULL, plus some extra HOF code added to the DLL that came right out of HOF-3.17.001 pretty much unchanged. If you get a chance, try it with BULL and BUG only. It might be something there. Also, from a quick browse of the Civ4 - Tech support forum. A lot of people are having trouble with Win7 and BTS 3.19.

Other that the BugPath code, I don't think anything uses the registry. In HOF-3.17.001, we used the registry key to find the Documents folder for MapFinder saves. I assume BugPath does the same. The VB.NET programs (MapFinder and Assetschecker) and the Inno Setup Installer need the Civ4 reg entry to find civ4. I am assume since you were able to install BUFFY alright that there weren't any problems with the installer finding the Mods folder.

BTW, most of the Python and DLL code is the BUG Team's (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=268) work (EmperorFool, ruff_hi, etc.). I couldn't begin to touch their quality. (If you want to see some of my crap stuff, look at the MapFinder logic. Most of the core stuff there is mine.)

Hi! Whenever I start a new game (I do it through the Custom game and check Locked Assets Modifiers or what it is called), I get warned that the game cannot be apllied to HOF because "CRCs are missing". What does that mean and what can be done?

EDIT: Sorry for posting to a wrong forum.

It means your install isn't correct in some way. Best to reinstall (remember to delete the original directories first). If that doesn't work, try running Asset Checker (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=assetschecker) and post the results here.

I experienced the problem described above when I started BtS automaticaly with the BUFFY mod by typing

mods="the path of the mod"

behind the path of the BtS file. Later, I realized that starting BtS without any mod and loading the mod from the game interface works well (=the problem does not occur any more). But, being curious, I have ran the "AssetsChecker.exe" file to see what happens and the result seems to be a little weird, see:

Which OS are you running? And which edition (source) of Civ4 are you using? (i.e. Separate CD/DVDs, Civ4 Gold and BTS, Civ4 Complete, Steam, etc.)

Did you install BTS and then patch directly to 3.19? You might want to try install 3.17 first. Always make sure you patch vanilla to 1.74 before installing/patch BTS.

Another thing to look at if you are using Vista or XP is running Windows update to get all the update and the optional .NET stuff. I assume you are on the current Service Pack.

Just to be sure, my shortcut has /mod= BUFFY-3.19.001 after the exe. I think it is a case of quotes or a blank before the = sign. In any case, this what work for me.

I have Vista Home Edition 32bit with all the windows updates and Civ IV Complete.

I did patch directly to 3.19. Also, I installed all three games first and patched them later, I didnt know this could cause any problem. Do you think I should reinstall and do things in the right order?

My shortcut was

mod="C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Mods\BUFFY-3.19.001"

after the .exe which was fine, I only was not able to start a game for HOF use. If I did not use this shortcut and loaded the mod from the game interface and then started a new game exactly by the same way (=through custom game), the warning message about HOF use didnt appear. However, the weird output of AssetsChecker.exe is still the same. I assume I can ignore it if everything else works well (?).

If you have to fully qualify the path to the mod, I am wondering if your Civ4 registry paths are messed up. Did you have Civ4 installed in a different path or something?

Reinstalling game, mod doesnt work! can someone uploade the shader files?Technically, it is against the CFC Forum rules to upload parts of a game like that. Copyrights, you know.

You might try installing each of the BTS patches (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=12) in order of release to see if one of them put them out there originally. You can e-mail us at hof.civfanatics@gmail.com in the future about this. :)

Hi.. I've looked everywhere can't seem to figure this one out. When I try to load the starting save for BOTM25 with Buffy running I get "The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed." And it won't load the game.

I finally just got buffy working with vista.. and now this. Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks.

Are you Win7 or Vista? If you are Vista, what service pack? Are your Windows updates up-to-date? Including .NET optional installs?

Been away from HoF for a while as I was so frustrated at not getting it working. Finally in reply to your questions above I'm using Vista, SP1, all updates installed to date (not sure about .NET optional) but still told my games won't be valid. Someone suggested I run the mod with the UAC turned off but this seems a risky process. Any thoughts?

Have you tried the Vista Fixes (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=vista) or Asset Checker (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=assetschecker)? Try these two things first and let us know the results.

I found a solution - right click the desktop shortcut for Civ IV and select the compatibility tab; check the box marked "run as administrator`' and click apply. This means that when i open up Civ IV I have to give permission for the application to run (this is just one click) but it does mean there are no compatibility issues with Buffy. It means I can now rejoin the HoF community and upgrade my Quattromaster status!
